@@EuropeanAutoRepair The steering wheel is hard to move left or right, the steering shaft end is rusted. If you just pull the one pinch bolt off the bottom of the steering shaft you can slip the u joint off the steering gear and feel if it is seized, if the steering is difficult and easier through the rotation it’s likely the shaft, the intermittent shaft is much more common of a problem
Great Video! I have a 2009 Audi Q5 . I have a bit a play when i turn left and right with a slight vibration when i drive . Feels a bit jumpy . Hard to explain. Any idea what it could be ?
They are a different design but still utilizes u joints so it is possible tho not common on that model, more common to have those damaged wires causing stiff steering on that model
@@IWillBeAMillionair I had the same problem on my Q7. Before replacing the parts, You may try the following: 1. spray a lot WD40 on the u-joint (the lower one), and turn the steering to the left and right limit, then spray more WD 40 again to clean the rust and dirt. 2. Wait for several hours, spay white lithium greases and turn the steering wheel till the u-joint is covered with grease. After doing this, my Q7 is as smooth as new.
Should need steering angle recalibration, they are made very accurate. If you don't lock the wheel and loose position of center you can damage the clock spring
Thanks...but here's some additional info. It makes that "scraping" noise when standing still when you turn the steering wheel right or left. No noise if you're driving straight...only when turning. This is a real issue for me so would appreciate some additional help.
@@shirleyschroeder2351 Yeah I've seen a failed ball joint cause some rotation squeaks too. Might be worth having a local independent shop taking a look at it
My steering occasionally makes a “knock” sound that I can feel in the steering wheel when slow turning like in a parking lot or driveway. Would this fix solve that issue?
@@EuropeanAutoRepair ok. I thought maybe one of the joints was binding then making that knock sound when it unbinded. Any idea what it might be then? Appreciate your help.
@@rickc9672 Make sure you don't have a broken front coil spring or anything like that. If not it may be a control arm issue. If you hear a rotation clicking with the wheel turned at low speed more then likely a front outer cv joint is failing. Check for torn boots

My 2015 Audi Q5 has a "scratching" noise whenever I turn the steering wheel left or right. Could this have something to do with the steering shaft also?
@@EuropeanAutoRepair Actually, it's a common issue for Audi Q5/SQ5 to have "squeaking noise", because of the shaft is rubbing the sealing rubber, there is an Audi TSB for it. My 2016 Q5 had the noise when it was only 5000 miles. Audi dealer sprayed some grease in it, a few weeks later the noise came back. Then, the dealer replaced it under warranty. A year later, the noise gradually came back, and didn't bother to replace it again. I'm getting used to it, but it's annoying. Now, I'm thinking of replacing it myself. Thanks for the video.
It's funny I had a Q5 come in last week with that squeaking from the steering grommet, it was a few weeks after the dealer replaced the steering shaft, I played with the positioning of the grommet on that bearing and seems to have taken care of it.
@@EuropeanAutoRepair Just found the TSB: static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2015/MC-10130705-9999.pdf It seems to cover most Audi models. Would love to hear your opinion about the best way to prevent the noise from coming back (it's a matter of time for the noise to appear even with a new one.)
You’re a real lifesaver. Thank you
Thanks man!!
You made me save over 900€ of labor work by Audi Dealer thank you a lot I dir myself and omg drive it like brand new. Thank you 1000times 🎉💪🏻
That’s awesome! So happy it helped you out
Спасибо 🎉 Ты очень помог , в России заменить у Диллера очень дорого , ремонт самому мне обошелся в 47$ 😂
I’m happy it was helpful!
Awesome Video thank you.
Nice presentation, can the intermediate steering shaft damage the steering rack module?
I’ve havent seen that and can’t picture how it could really, do you have a issue with your steering gear?

After replacement do you need rest or recalibration of steering angle sensor? And what happens if you don't lock steering wheel during the process.
No recalibration required, as long as the steering wheel doesn't spin with the rod disconnected its OK. If it does you may damage clock spring

I've got a little play in my steering wheel will that be the cause ?
Usually doesn't cause play from what I've seen. If the ujoint became loose it could
Could it also be the angle sensor so
I've never seen the angle sensor cause stiff steering on these models

Nope it shouldn't
Torque specs for the bolt good sir? Thanks in advance.
30nm and 90 degrees I’m pretty sure

Yeah it’s usually hard and then easy depending on the position of the steering wheel

10mm triple square
