I'm from Finland and was just in LA few weeks ago on a holiday. Had to go around a couple of canyons with a rental Toyota Sienna to see if Matt would be there test driving some car. Didn't see him, but bumped into a Subaru meet on the PCH. Have to say that the Sienna is not built for the canyons! Then also later on I saw Matt driving by in Venice with the Focus RS, saved my day! :D
he looks like your brother from another mother .. and another father .. this makes no sense, but hey that's a really clean evo and a cool chill owner !
Using "stage" tunes from Cobb is actually bad for an MR/Ralliart SST transmission (and even custom tunes with the AP don't have the necessary options to make the SST work right). This car is stock (with an intake, which doesn't do anything at all vs stock intake) and the owner uses S-Sport as he should, so the basic Cobb tune wouldn't be as much of a problem, but using a proper open source custom tune from a tuner that knows the SST is mandatory to make extra power on these cars reliably.
I've brought it up to you before (think I got shut down) but I still think a Ralliart of the same Generation with decent mods would hold it's own for you. Same transmission as this MR (and a lot of guys flash the same S-Sport mode on them), Same engine, smaller TD04 turboand 09's at least have the exact same interior (which, yes is kind of shit outside of recaros). There are several RA's making over 400-500 awhp with built tranny's. The key would be to find one with a decent suspension setup since they're without the Evo's AYC and suspension. And don't forget you've rally crossed one before on the channel :P
I wouldn't feel truly happy with any dual clutch auto but I definitely like the Evo with a dual clutch. They were one of the first reeasonably prices cars with a dual clutch with the VW GTI and I think it works especially given that the manual is a 5 speed.
Wow tough crowd. I'm surprised there's so much hate for the Evo. Why so? I've always heard nothing but great things about them. Or, is it hate specifically for the outgoing model for some reason? Maybe I'm the only one who finds this to be a great looking car with some interesting features. A true manual AND paddle shifters? And yes it's not as exciting looking as say an STi, but I suppose this would appeal to more to the sleeper fans; especially if you delete the rear wing in favor of a subtle lip style. And sure the car is based on an economy car, but it's not the only one on the market with the concept of making a performance car from an economy base. Yet this video has so many negative comments despite it being a solid car. Really odd.
Maxwell Vossen I surely hope that's not the case. I'm actually a Subaru owner. But I hope anyone on this channel is not as juvenile to resort to brand loyalty to blindly bash a vehicle/manufacturer. But if that's the case, then I was kind of expecting people who watch this channel to be more open minded and less juvenile than that. That said, I can imagine why people think this car is boring: it doesn't make high HP, doesn't sound crazy, no blowoff valve. I can imagine one reason: California Smog Check. That alone really limits what you can do to almost nothing exciting. This owner is probably looking for a little more driveability without all the hassle of trying to beat the system. But he still has a great handling car that appears to have excellent turn-in and grip. You can see that in the video. And with that chassis and power, that looks like a very fun car for tight roads IMHO.
Brian Westfield Some people need to make themselves feel better about their car choices and feel the need to bash the competitor. When in reality if we all had the funds of say, Jay Leno we'd probably own every car we want regardless of brand. I know I would.
Name User While Jay Leno money would allow some incredible work on an Evo (as well as any car really), even Jay Leno money can't get around California Smog rules 😪 but sure all the cosmetic stuff would be sick!
I wish the Dual clutch Evos didnt require crazy tranny work once you wanted to build more power. I saw a race between a MR vs GSR, GSR had 50 more WHP. The MR still stayed neck and neck due to the shifting, crazy!
i've owned an MR a few years back. I kept it almost completely stock with just an AEM cold air intake to let it breathe a little easier. i just had the runt of the litter that had a faulty gearbox computer. looking at it after i've sold it, the problems already started about 6 months after i bought it. but in the end it took over 3 years and wearing out the clutch plates WAY sooner than anticipated until the dealership actually believed there was something wrong and they were able to fix it. the fix then was ALSO a multi-stage operation where the computer was swapped out for one that didnt have anything installed on it so they couldn't upload whatever needed to be uploaded to it. so i got to drive around in a courtesy Colt for a few more days while a working computer was ordered and installed. but at that point i was already so fed up that i was looking around at other cars and so i ended up with 100hp less and RWD in a GT86. both very fun cars in different ways. but i do miss it every once in a while
No offense to the owner, but the Evo Xs featured on these one takes do not do the car justice. I know you've done the gates 311, but it's also fairly mild (aside from suspension and brakes). Please try to review a car with at least an MHI turbo or bigger) with supporting mods. Flashing a stage 1 or 2 map with an AP is a joke, and should not be considered when there's ECU flash, and a people to tune properly.
Marvin Headrick no one has ever submitted a big power evo that's made it to the shoot. I've had 3 500+ HP builds submitted and scheduled, broken before the shoot.
TheSmokingTire thanks for the reply! I know a lot of car reviewers have the problem of cars breaking down before the shoot, but I know there are plenty of solid 450+ AWHP 10s out there. Mine, for instance makes 456/375 to the wheels on E85 and I feel very confident in my tune from TJ Van Cott out of WTF tuning. I feel like that's a pretty sweet spot for EVOs for reliability/ fun. You might want more if you're doing highway pulls, but where I drive is very similar to the canyons you carve on your one takes. Most of the people I know with medium to big builds are on the east side of the country, or I'd point some people your way. Keep up the awesome job!
Yes! It's an evo! But no, you didn't make it interesting at all. It's funny he's into programming yet he picked an OTS map from Cobb. Most of the evo community goes gets a tuner because the data is better. I understand it's a daily, and he's on his way to his mods. But Matt, you should have chosen a better Evo X MR. A properly built evo with more power would have been a lot more fun. Mine is 376/300 on a MD, and even with stock suspension, it would still rip through those canyons. 18-22k btw, is for a high mileage evo lol. They hold there value better than that. Overall, not a bad review. Keep up the good work!
Fan are the ones sending Matt requests and unfortunately no fans with tuned EVO X has send Matt anything. Plus it’s nice to see how a stock EVO let alone an EVO x is like to drive do to all of them going to end up sexually molested
If you watch enough of these you can see Matt having a rare bad day. we've seen Evo tune and bolt on cars, what about the transmission? "It's really good." Just givin' you shit Matt. Nice car.
Kozmic motorsport is workink with Dodson, that makes it the best place for sst transmissions, I have their cooler, and sofar no overheat, later on if you go above 350 wtq you need a clutch upgrade, I personally would go all out to a sportsman kit so I know I am covered for more than just the current level where I'm at. My advice for all mr owners is that the devil is in the details, you have to do all supporting mods right and in the right order so you maintain the complete and capable package that the evo x is.
Looks great, fantastically capable and quick...and endlessly boring. Sorry, nothing exciting about an EVO with bolt-ons. I can understand why people love them, why they get them and mod them. But they are kinda...obvious? Meh, to each their own, but not my cup of tea. Great vid as always Matt.
CrAzYNooBB55 no...fast and looking good [subjective at best - the Lancer is not a good looking car really] do not make a car interesting or exciting. I say a GTR is boring. It is all computers doing the work for you. Same with the EVO. It just does not have anything for it that would make me go "hmm that is really cool / interesting." Hugely popular? Yes. Very fast and capable? Yes. Better than a Corolla in every way? Certainly Yes. I am not disputing these things. Interesting? No. If you drove one, how often do you get a knowing nod from other drivers, or a wave or shout out from other enthusiasts? Probably never. That is because it is obvious, kinda boring... "Yep, that's an EVO."...would be the usual comment. Not saying it is a terrible car, far from it. But it is far from the best, the most interesting, the most exciting. Hey, everyone loves their own selection of cars, that is what is great about being a petrolhead. You don't have to like Italian cars, I don't have to like Japanese imports. Room for the lot. Just was expressing my opinion about the car, you don't have to agree.
bruuuuh I'm looking at evo's and even though the 8's with really low miles are as much as the x's I'm still leaning towards the 8. You still feel this way and why?
Vince you dont have to find one with really low miles. the 4g63 is actually a very reliable engine, its just when you start to add lots of power when it gets unreliable. i had a stock evo 9 that i sold at 70,000 miles and never had a single problem with the engine
Shame I'm not in Cali, I just got a MAP kit with a Precision 6266 for mine, and I'd have loved to finally been that big turbo Evo you did, before getting tired of Evo's. LOL. Finding some big ass cams now. Haha. Evo with a Honda powerband. But like the other ones, it'll probably be broke soon.
Wonder what's up with the turning radius? I have a Ralliart with more or less the same driveline and a narrower track and the turning radius is by far the best of any AWD car I've owned.
Nice car. Positively surprised by how quickly the gears shift both up and down. Next thing I'd do would be to replace the steering wheel leather rim with a new one :p
Better IMO, of course, unless you really HAVE to row your own gears. Having a 6th gear is very beneficial too. The only gripe would be the cost to upgrade the clutches to handle more power vs. clutch cost in the manual, but if you have money, that’s not a problem either. The rest of the transmission is perfectly strong. Getrag FTW
Hey Matt, I see another e36 in the background there. I hope this one was a good one, because all previous ones on the show were kinda incomplete or not necessarily the best examples of e36s.
hey man the sst is a great trans. it can hold 350 wtq on stock clutches and way more whp. COBB tunes for the sst aren't that great because they didn't adjust the sst tables. If you go with shops that know the sst like kozmic and WTF tuning, you'll be better off with opensource. I don't know very much of the vw dsg. Also difference between normal, sport and s-sport is the slipping of the clutches. Obviously s-sport is the best because it slips the clutches the least.
Con Tra I guess that's why they always say the evo is the one you drive at the track and the subaru the one you drive to and from. That's what I've heard them say anyway.
I agree with that sentiment. Al those evo fanboys will spit at you for saying it, saying "get a camry if you want something soft" or some idiotic drivel, but they just mad because you're right. I used to daily a 5-speed Evo X. While it's fun to blast on and off a ramp or a canyon road, when it drones at highway cruising speed, I'd much sooner rip my ears out.
just buy an extra transmission, ship it to texas/wherever to build it, and whenever your first one breaks, swap in the spare and ship the broken one out to wherever to get it repaired/built. depends on how much down time costs you i guess :)
I really wanted a 2015 Ralliart but they didn't have that at the Mitsubishi dealership. I ended up getting the 2015 Lancer GT instead. Sometimes I wished I just said screw it and paid $10k more for the Evo!
The Focus "4wd" is like Audi´s Haldex and AFAIK the EVOs and the STIs have permanent AWD. I have tested a 2006 STI with 330HP and stock Focus RS and the STI pulls and accelerates a little bit harder because the 4WD has that effect. On slow and mid speed corners the Focus was very stable but the STI was on rails, it felt like Matt said "like cheating".
g35driver.com/forums/g-spot/454213-lolmustanglol-s-build-progress-still-made.html just got the vortech v3, looking to get it all done by Spring next year.
EVO > STI..... Subaru's understeer like crazy (Subaru owners just like to claim XXX whp) ... Top gears evo v. STI sums it up perfectly. And I don't care to argue because I don't own either. But have driven both many many times I would take the evo... However i settled on a golf R due to comfort and fit and finish.. Then bought a Porsche for handling and drivers experience. This was not the best "modified" version of this car for the review of an EVO X but they are awesome cars none the less
Love this car!! Really enjoy mine and living up north in heavy snow i get the best of both worlds. But the only thing i do not like is that with Mitsubishi everything starts going as soon as the Warranty is up.
I'm from Finland and was just in LA few weeks ago on a holiday. Had to go around a couple of canyons with a rental Toyota Sienna to see if Matt would be there test driving some car. Didn't see him, but bumped into a Subaru meet on the PCH. Have to say that the Sienna is not built for the canyons! rextetron hope you enjoyed your trip!
Just bike the Venice boardwalk and you'll see Matt everyday! ;-)
That's a really nice Evo X.
Dad bods on point
Andrew Haha that's beyond dad bod. This them uncle bods
lmao
so nice of matt to include his brother in a one take
Coby Boeder his blond brother
he looks like your brother from another mother .. and another father .. this makes no sense, but hey that's a really clean evo and a cool chill owner !
K0E0M0O cousin? Lol
shut your eyes, and suddenly it's One Take with Seth Rogan 😂
Tom Clayton LOL IM GLAD IM NOT THE ONLY PERSON ............he still a cool guy
more like if john goodwin and seth rogan had a kid!
danslugs hahaha too right mate!
Then open your eyes, and its Seth Rogans equally fat brother
The brother of Joe Rogan? :p
WOW. I forgot how stunning the 10th gen could be. That red is amazing! I even like the fact that it's the DCT.
The exterior does look nice..that interior is terrible though!
+Edward Brearey yep
Yeah it's the same interior as my cheapo 2008 Lancer GTS lol
Hunter W yeah but your 2008 Whatever doesn't have the best AwD system behind i or a turbo's inline 4
Not a dct transmission its a SST.
Using "stage" tunes from Cobb is actually bad for an MR/Ralliart SST transmission (and even custom tunes with the AP don't have the necessary options to make the SST work right). This is becoming one of my favourite automotive channels on youtube! Keep it up!
Car needs an exhaust
Matt, props for applying the "e-brake" properly @ 11.55.
Others take note 👍
Never been this early.. Matt, I really enjoy your vids!
Love the Mitsubishi. Great show. Keep em coming!
I've brought it up to you before (think I got shut down) but I still think a Ralliart of the same Generation with decent mods would hold it's own for you. I did rally cross that one. I completely destroyed it with some dirt. The paint got sandblasted right off that thing. Poor car.
+ColoradoNative lol
WOAH i have a civic but i hate that bitch lol
I agree it is not a bad car
ColoradoNative actually the 09+ ralliart is awd
dayum that dual clutch surprised me...didn't expect it to be anywhere near as good as a VW group DCT but it seems pretty quick and seamless
it is as good but doesnt make the awesome fart sounds that VAG cars do
that horrible fart sound*
***** nope i spelled awesome correctly
finally seeing some winter clouds! adds nicely to the footage
Evos for track and subies for rally
The picture in picture view is great! Good choice guys!
Heads up!
Title says "Mistubishi" instead of Mitsubishi, at least at the time of writing this comment.
I wouldn't bother asking the channel to review my car with a stage 1 tune. it's like "yeahh....little better than stock." What a revelation there.
I'm seeing double....
I wouldn't feel truly happy with any dual clutch auto but I definitely like the Evo with a dual clutch. They were one of the first reeasonably prices cars with a dual clutch with the VW GTI and I think it works especially given that the manual is a 5 speed.
wow first time been early on one take
Really love the Evo 10. If I had one, it could never be that quiet tho. I've heard some crazyyy sounding Evos. :D Love em.
All subaru lovers 😒

nice mild video. I can't wait to make that drive from Florida to Cali for a one-take
I wish the Dual clutch Evos didnt require crazy tranny work once you wanted to build more power. I saw a race between a MR vs GSR, GSR had 50 more WHP. The MR still stayed neck and neck due to the shifting, crazy!
hey man sorry to sound dumb but what is a GSR
mujjuman Its the 5-speed model
thanks!
Two big ole' boys having a blast in a rice burner. What a world we live in.
I think this was the first time on one takes that someone actually did let them pass on a canyon road :))
"i like driving the canyons... its soothing" lol. cool guy
The Cobb AP is going to ruin the transmission. It has no transmission mapping.
What a glorious neck-beard that man has. Goes well with his World of Warcraft subscription.
i've owned an MR a few years back. I kept it almost completely stock with just an AEM cold air intake to let it breathe a little easier. i just had the runt of the litter that had a faulty gearbox computer. looking at it after i've sold it, the problems already started about 6 months after i bought it. but in the end it took over 3 years and wearing out the clutch plates WAY sooner than anticipated until the dealership actually believed there was something wrong and they were able to fix it. the fix then was ALSO a multi-stage operation where the computer was swapped out for one that didnt have anything installed on it so they couldn't upload whatever needed to be uploaded to it. so i got to drive around in a courtesy Colt for a few more days while a working computer was ordered and installed. but at that point i was already so fed up that i was looking around at other cars and so i ended up with 100hp less and RWD in a GT86. both very fun cars in different ways. but i do miss it every once in a while
Couple more bolt ons and a pro tune and it will be a lot faster.
OOOOOH is that a boosted e36 waiting for a one take?
Best Vid ever - 2006 GTO
When are we gonna see the black e36 in the back ground
today
Wait, is Matt driving or the owner?!
Well I don't feel an intake and stage 1 tune from a Cobb Accessport is even modded. Honestly I thing they wasted time showing this...
Why don't you submit yours then?
Marvin Headrick I 100% agree. I am also tuned by TJ and have carbon ceramic pads. This car does not do the X any justice whatsoever.
Yes! It's an evo! But no, you didn't make it interesting at all. It's funny he's into programming yet he picked an OTS map from Cobb. such a clean evo 10 but would hands down always take an evo 8 or 9 instead, sometimes newer isnt always better!
MC Garage yea me 3rd
il take the evo 4-6 instead
4G63 is life
Imad S Lmao it's a econo box either way
Evo 9 RS
very clean car love it!
Nice to see John Goodman's twin on the show
Looks great, fantastically capable and quick...and endlessly boring. Sorry, nothing exciting about an EVO with bolt-ons. I can understand why people love them, why they get them and mod them. But they are kinda...obvious? Meh, to each their own, but not my cup of tea.
Great vid as always Matt.
Broseph.. evo + boltons= jizz in pants
it's just so good, it's the norm
CrAzYNooBB55 I think he's from England, and drives an alfa
CrAzYNooBB55 no...fast and looking good [subjective at best - the Lancer is not a good looking car really] do not make a car interesting or exciting. I say a GTR is boring. ChaosphereIX talking to you is like driving a dump truck full of diarrhoea over a bumpy dirt road
sold my Evo 10 for a Evo 8, I have no regrets what so ever
good choice. always loved the evo 8 and 9. the evo 8 is a lot lighter than an evo 10 also
bruuuuh I'm looking at evo's and even though the 8's with really low miles are as much as the x's I'm still leaning towards the 8. You still feel this way and why?
Vince
you dont have to find one with really low miles. the 4g63 is actually a very reliable engine, its just when you start to add lots of power when it gets unreliable. i had a stock evo 9 that i sold at 70,000 miles and never had a single problem with the engine
chinchy111 True, I just feel a little more peace of mind getting one with lower miles, I think it'll help it maintain its value too
trippy Buzz you got no car stupid bitch
Great vid. Great session.
When is Part 2 of "How to Drive a Manual Transmission" coming out?
Cobbs dyno showed your fiesta make 235whp. That has never happened on literally any other fiesta in the nation. Cobb dyno absolutely reads high.
For stage 3 that is
Ooooh, nice E36 :O
Wonder what's up with the turning radius? I have a Ralliart with more or less the same driveline and a narrower track and the turning radius is by far the best of any AWD car I've owned.
That steering wheel tho. How?
Nice car. Positively surprised by how quickly the gears shift both up and down. Next thing I'd do would be to replace the steering wheel leather rim with a new one :p
How would you say the dual clutch is vs. the manual?
RoadTripsAndSkateTips Easy to snap axles from the dig with decent power behind it lolol.
Better IMO, of course, unless you really HAVE to row your own gears. Having a 6th gear is very beneficial too. Hey Matt, how´s the SST compare to VW´s DSG??? Keep up the good work :-)
hey man the sst is a great trans. it can hold 350 wtq on stock clutches and way more whp. COBB tunes for the sst aren't that great because they didn't adjust the sst tables. Matt, was the road noise as bad irl as it was in vid? Can barely hear you guys over the cabin noise.
You think that's bad, wait till you hear the 5-speed manual. the SST is tame by comparison.
Con Tra I guess that's why they always say the evo is the one you drive at the track and the subaru the one you drive to and from. That's what I've heard them say anyway.

I really wanted a 2015 Ralliart but they didn't have that at the Mitsubishi dealership. I ended up getting the 2015 Lancer GT instead. Sometimes I wished I just said screw it and paid $10k more for the Evo!
i didnt know mitsubishi did a double clutch.. thats cool
Needs more power. Still a really good looking car.
So what year us that SST? And what package did you get? Also how much did you pay for it? 😎
I've been seeing some so so cars. Would you like to put my 400 whp sti on your show?
Dusty Thibodaux nope, done with STI's. Nothing else to say about them. Just like Evo's
TheSmokingTire ok. Thanks for the reply.
FINALLY.
nice spring bind bruh
5:50?
What kind of clutch did you use for your SST transformation gear ????
Looks nice probably fast as fk rides nice but it's not loud enough 4 me
And Ohh another e36 in the back when is that coming out
I got so happy when i saw the E36!!
Michael is the Super Saiyan blonde Matt Farah lol
was there a banging sound coming from the diffs when they were doing the tight turn around?
@Matt - How does this dual clutch compare to the latest? I've heard it feels dated compared to the latest from VW and others
I bet that is a fun car to drive. Needs more loud!
cant wait new gto and gtr at the same platform!
Nigga Drive TV that won't happen...
FINALLY
how it compers to your focus?
Does it turn better than focus, becaus both are very similar 4wd systems?
The Focus "4wd" is like Audi´s Haldex and AFAIK the EVOs and the STIs have permanent AWD.
I have tested a 2006 STI with 330HP and stock Focus RS and the STI pulls and accelerates a little bit harder because the 4WD has that effect.
On slow and mid speed corners the Focus was very stable but the STI was on rails, it felt like Matt said "like cheating".
atascatorDAOC awd and 4wd are two totally different technology -_-|| also focus rs awd system is quite different from audi's quattro
Allan Z I didnt say anything about quattro.
I said Haldex which sends power to the rear wheels under certain conditions.
@0:39 I see someone likes plushies lol!
Awesome
Matt, how about a review on the 2016 Q60 red sport
Did caliou install the ap himself?
Hey I just sold Michael an AW11 down here in FL haha
Matt ,would Honda allow you to drive the type R?.
Could Renault-Nissan make individual platforms for Mitsubishi ?
Ya'll won't believe what I once did at camp, that involved a flute.
wow i didnt know these were the auto dual clutch thing
Matt's cousin !
The horsepower gain on the EVO X can barely compensate for hauling around Matt and its owner lol
What are you thoughts on doing a supercharged, high compression G35 coupe? I'm over here in NJ, dunno when you're gonna come back.

just got the vortech v3, looking to get it all done by Spring next year.
What year Evo is this?
I just noticed you hold the ebrake button as you lift just like real winners do.
Im about to buy one of these...loosing 14 grand on my other car tho,I'd have to pay about 220$ a week with insurance....
how did you get the spoiler on an mr?
Out of curiosity, anyone know what car starts up for the show's intro?
Love this car!! Really enjoy mine and living up north in heavy snow i get the best of both worlds. But the only thing i do not like is that with Mitsubishi everything starts going as soon as the Warranty is up.
You should review an mx6 some time.
matt you need to do a 2015 ram rt they are really unrated if ur ever in Jacksonville lmk u can drive mine thanks
what year is this rig?
