First time, I've heard this song in over 40+years. You could play that song right now, and it would be a top ten hit! And no one would know the difference. Just a badass song.
I like them both. But "Promises, Promises" is definitely my favorite of the two. In fact, there are a few other Naked Eyes originals that rank higher in my book than "Always Something There To Remind Me." Although all of their material is great!
This is one of those songs where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. So much goodness and subtlety going on that makes it a bonafide and timeless ear worm.
While "Always Something..." was indeed a cover song, it may interest you to know that Burt Bacharach (RIP), it's composer, considered it his favorite version of all its iterations.
This song takes me back to being 11 years old again. Classic jam showing just how otherworldly music in the 80s was. And it doesn't matter the genre, either. The 90s were amazing but, the 80s were magical.

This is an example of lyrical dissonance. The lyrics are so sad, yet the music is so cheerful. Then, of course, the video takes the darkness of the lyrical content and amps it even darker.
Agree with you with one difference. The album version is IMHO, better than the single version which is used in this video -- better intro, some lyrical differences and most of all, _longer._
Also a big MTV hit in 1983 a great year for music. Bought this 45 around the second week in was in the top 40 and still have it. Their keyboardist Rob Fisher died in 1999 age 39 (stomach ailment) so sad.

Thanks for posting the lyrics to one of my favorite songs of the eighties. Another one with a similar message is Taken In by Mike and The Mechanics. Very jazzy. Most remember The Living Years but Taken In has a special place in my heart for songs about fools. Everybody Plays the Fool sometime. That one's from the seventies. You said you'd always be here
"In love forever"

You can't finish what you start
If this is love it breaks my heart
You made me promises promises
You knew you'd never keep

Why do I believe

At all the silly things we did
