Loved this song I was 14 years when this came out in 1984 the 80's were a great decade in my teens. Now fast forward 40 years later 2024, now 54 and still love it, takes me back to the memories of the 80's
I did. As strong as this song was musically (it made me buy one of the first albums in my life), it was just one out of, perhaps, hundreds of well made singles - across all genres - during that time. It seemed normal. We would hear it on a radio and it was like a drug; we had to wait - addicted - for days, to hear the song again. When it finally played, it was like getting a wish granted by a genie. A real treat. Decades later, I realized the 80's were a Golden Age in entertainment. We didn't know it at the time. We assumed music, TV, movies, etc. would continue, qualitatively speaking. But it went downhill in many ways and I haven't seen any indication of a massive return. The only entertainment that has categorically improved are things that aren't a fair comparison: modern "long arc" TV series (e.g. Yellowstone, Black Sails, Battle Star Galactica, West World, etc.) and extraoridinarily immersive video games. The closest 80's equivalent would be an occasional "mini series" - maybe once a week for 8 weeks (guessing) and a text-based, story game, with very limited choices and command vocabulary.
Lol. I was only 4 back then and loved He-Man,Transformers and Voltron. As I read "pumped up loud". By instinct, you reminded me of that movie with Christian Slater "Pump up the volume." Not many people use "pump(ed)" nowadays. Lol!!! ✌
As a Black man born in the Bronx, where I grew up around Rap, Hip Hop and R&B, the 80’s would have never have been the same without the music of Hall & Oats! LOVE me some Hall & Oats!
Yup. Their music video releases on MTV were always a huge deal. I remember when this one debuted, I watched on that night after excitedly waiting for days to watch it. I was a big Hall and Oates fan back then.
I remember visiting family in Florida almost every year (from Chicago) and driving along long causeways next tot eh ocean and songs like this playing back in the 80s. Amazing times. I really do feel bad for young people these days. 99% of the music and accompanying experiences just suck.
I can’t really explain the feeling that 80’s music transmits to me, it’s almost like a nostalgia from a time when I wasn’t even born yet, like a fake nostalgia, and from a time that people were so naive, without knowing what they could encounter in the future era, that they were genuinely happy with their lives and what surrounded them, but one thing is right, that feeling is amazing…
The word you seek is anemoia. Nostalgia for a time you've never known or experienced. Thankfully, I experienced the 80's but felt anemoia for the 60's/70/s when listening to music from back then as music does that to people. ANEMOIA!!!!!! 👊

this song is immortal. can't believe it's 40 yrs old, still sounds so smooth and fresh. heard it the other night while patio dining on a gorgeous spring night and of all the songs played that night, this is the one i remembered.
I have a theory on why it feels timeless. I know this much, it's out of time, it's stuck in your head when it comes around. 'I've had enough', is that a line, that would be said when this vid is found? I think not.
How is it that I'm old enough to have been aware of Hall & Oates back in the 80s but it's taken me this long to appreciate them. This particular song is incredible
I was 15 when this song came out...I'll be 50 in September... Which means these guys are in their late 60's early 70's... Which means I am severely depressed now..😩 time goes by so fast! My body has aged but I an still 18 in my mind...😊
46 in September for this cat. My 18 birthday feels like last week and my 30th feels like yesterday morning. I understand and feel you 100%. Just leave a positive legacy, no matter how big or small, when you check out. Peace
Lived it my brother...I was born at the right time of some of the greatest music ever... be it rock, R and B, Jazz , Soul, funk and country..the golden era !
I wish this kind of music would come back, maybe I’m biased but it all feels so dreamy and romantic even though I’ve never experienced it. Such passion
well... YOU JUST EXPERIENCED IT (as one that lived through it) there it is mate. the difference is , in our time 1. We were young (like .. 2nd grade young) 2. This music was everywhere, in the shop, at the bus stop, at home, in the disco, at the roller rink, everywhere so when you have a constant influence of positivity like this , You feel fucking awesome 3. Then.. the world was different as well - No LGBTQ - no Flat earthers - No Trolls - Not much stupidity and if any of those decided to rear their heads they were told to fuck off Trying starting a debate in the 80s like - Let's discuss what defines a personal as male or female EXPECT THE RESPONSE........ Ohhh Fuck off mate !!! - But.. No really the earth is flat EXPECT THE RESPONSE........ Ohhh Fuck off mate !!! - Trolling got you a punch in the face, We called these people FUCKWITS - As for stupidity , Your first offence would result in everyone looking at you and laughing at you and saying .....DUUUUUUUUUUHHHHHHH!!!! LOL After a while you pick up the rules of being normal and not being a fuckwit so, that's why the world was a better place and then the music made it fucking better Then.... YOU HAD CHOICES Were you a pop person Were you a rap person Were you a heavy metal person Your choices were Really fucking good Awesome fucking Awesome Amazing beyond words and without a lie, ... when these are your choices YOU ACCEPT IT AS NORMAL, NOT AS AWESOME You just figure.... Hey, they are professionals and they are Artist's . it took my generation 30 years to figure out how fucking good we had it BY SEEING COMMENTS LIKE YOURS Make no mistake... YOUR GENERATION MAKES MY GENERATION UNDERSTAND WHAT WE HAD but it was dreamy and cool and romantic and you could find a chick and get with her and it was cool because the music suited the mood IT WAS A GOOD TIME TO BE ALIVE IT WAS A GOOD TIME TO BE A KID Everything was new and emerging We had technology ... but not too much We still had to do shit on our own and not be lazy We learned respect and if we didn't we got a punch in the face and then we did learn it LESSONS IN LIFE MATE... Simple as that People can say what they like but if you go to school in the 80s and you decide your'e going to be a prick to someone Sooner or later something is going to happen to you that makes you wish you never fucking did that you have the living fucked kicked out of you AND AS A RESULT, WHEN YOUR'E AN ADULT, YOU'RE NOT A DICKHEAD The system works there was no hiding behind a keyboard if you did shit, someone would threaten to bash you if you hid from the bashing .... - We'd get on our BMX Bikes and find where you lived (YES.. REALLY LOL) i guess it sounds funny now to say it, but yes this is what we did - When you came outside, You'd be bashed You couldn't run from a bashing, sooner or later you'd be somewhere where the other person was, School, the shops, your own house, whatever and if you actively ran away from it.. YOU WERE A FUCKING PUSSY FOR LIFE. IMPORTANT LESSONS WERE LEARNED EVERYONE KNEW THE LESSONS AND THE MUSIC WAS AWESOME AND FIGHTS WERE FAIR, You went hard but everyone knew when enough was enough you win the fight, you help the other guy up if he did anything on the way up, he'd have the shit kicked out of him and then you leave him down it was all fair great time to be alive and i'd do it again in a heartbeat
Depending on what specifically you love about this song, I feel like there are bands like this, they're just not super popular or well known. Not in a hipster way, as in what constitutes "pop" music is just very different now.
I miss the 80's so much. It was a magical time where we were starting to come into the age of awesome electronic inventions, music, art, entertainment. I got to experience it as a kid and it was a magical time
I hate the era we're in now the music is garbage and these so called "artists" can't even write their own music much less perform it without a backing track. LONG LIVE HALL & OATES
Hall and Oates didn't write all their own music... look back to the formation of modern pop/rock'n'roll and alotta artists didn't write their own music.
Ian Ward Like what kind of amazing music from this era do you mean for example? Surely I agree that Daniel Baker has got a point that there isn't barely any "good music" around anymore.
those vibes man. i used to play vice city since it was released and i was like 5 years old back then. I am not violent, now i liked 80s music you are right :P
When your parents sing to the songs or music from a videogame youre playing.... priceless! One of the most violent games became one of the most nostalgic experiences in my life through its music.
Does it includes splitting Germany back into two, return of the Soviet Union, Namibia back being a part of South Africa, 1980's era level of military strength Cuba, Libya, Syria and Iraq, reunifying Yugoslavia and Czechoslovakia, Japan returns as the economic powerhouse and genuine Made in Japan products back on shevles worldwide?
They really had a hard edge to them, groundbreaking stuff. The transitions, layering, the dynamics, the arrangement and lyrics are masterful. This song is a MONSTER!
Oh shit, so well said! U should hear all the 12 inch versions; I can’t deicide which 1 is my fav.- well, all of them! Can you believe John Oates wrote the song, as it sounds like Daryl lyrics, but John thought Daryl would be the better singer, for it, and he was right!💜🎉💫🌟🎊❄️☃️🕊🎄🎁
Hard edge.....well put...like a lot of 80s pop. Now pop is overall ...lacking power and that ...that vibe that grabs your soul and stirs it.....! I love the bass line in this song.
I ignore these douchebags. They only care about their looser generation and in which computer game or TV-Show they met some old songs, an information nobody cares about. It annoys me as hell. These Youngsters are maybe too dumb to check that people raised up to these songs and already listened to them when they were brandnew.
When you discover hall and oates , realize youve heard every one of their hits and had no idea they wrote some of the greatest hits ever. 80 million records no streams. Enough said.
Today is singer/songwriter/musician John Oates' 76th birthday (born April 7, 1948). He is best known as half of the duo, Hall & Oates (with Daryl Hall). He co-wrote many of the top 10 songs that Hall & Oates recorded, including (with Hall): "Sara Smile" (the song refers to Hall's then-girlfriend, Sara Allen), "She's Gone", and "Out of Touch", as well as (with Allen and Hall): "You Make My Dreams", "I Can't Go for That (No Can Do)", "Maneater", and "Adult Education". He also sang lead vocals on several more singles in the Hot 100, such as "How Does It Feel to Be Back", "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'" (a remake of the 1965 song performed by the Righteous Brothers that was written by Phil Spector, Barry Mann, and Cynthia Weil), on which Oates shared lead vocals with Hall, and "Possession Obsession" (with Allen & Hall). Oates was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2004,and in 2014, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, as a member of Daryl Hall & John Oates. His memoir, Change of Seasons, was published in 2017.❤
We were so lucky. I actually feel so sorry for kids these days. They all miserable because they’re taught that they’re doomed, or victims of something. The 80’s were the pinnacle of hard but happy, Toughen up and get a job, etc.
Hall & Oates was/is an 80's band with great diversity of music technique. The music style combines pop, rock, R&B,/ blue-eyed soul. It really is amazing.
So true. Groundbreaking stuff. I once asked a friend of mine, who is black, why is it that so many black folks love Daryl Hall and John Oates? She responded "It's because they have SOUL." So true!
Just saw them last Sunday near Houston. What a concert! So nostalgic, I just returned to the 80s that night. They are as cool as ever, love this music!
Jesus pal, I saw them on 1984 and they were fantastic then lol ! How time flies, incredible to hear they're still going. Just goes to show their music is timeless

@sneaky beaver Honestly. I feel like everybody says this about the generation right after theirs but for people from the 80s-90s is kind of reasonable. Gen Z is very confusing and weird to get used to since it’s very advanced and so many people are now very confusing. Like trans people, non-binary, feminists, etc. Hippies were the closest thing the 80s has to the LGBTQ community.

I remember visiting family in Florida almost every year (from Chicago) and driving along long causeways next tot eh ocean and songs like this playing back in the 80s. Amazing times. I really do feel bad for young people these days. 99% of the music and accompanying experiences just suck.
The 80's wasn't a decade, it was an emotion. The iconic voices of some singers are just... unforgettable.
I thought i was the only 1..😯🙏💯🤝🤝

One of the catchiest songs ever written.
Such passion
well... YOU JUST EXPERIENCED IT
(as one that lived through it) there it is mate.
the difference is , in our time
1. We were young (like .. 2nd grade young)
2. This music was everywhere, in the shop, at the bus stop, at home, in the disco, at the roller rink, everywhere
so when you have a constant influence of positivity like this , You feel fucking awesome
3. Then.. the world was different as well
- No LGBTQ
- no Flat earthers
- No Trolls
- Not much stupidity
and if any of those decided to rear their heads they were told to fuck off
Trying starting a debate in the 80s like
- Let's discuss what defines a personal as male or female
EXPECT THE RESPONSE........ Ohhh Fuck off mate !!!
- But.. No really the earth is flat
EXPECT THE RESPONSE........ Ohhh Fuck off mate !!!
- Trolling got you a punch in the face,
We called these people FUCKWITS
- As for stupidity , Your first offence would result in everyone looking at you and laughing at you and saying
.....DUUUUUUUUUUHHHHHHH!!!!
LOL
After a while you pick up the rules of being normal and not being a fuckwit
so, that's why the world was a better place
and then the music made it fucking better
Then....
YOU HAD CHOICES
Were you a pop person
Were you a rap person
Were you a heavy metal person
Your choices were
Really fucking good
Awesome
fucking Awesome
Amazing beyond words
and without a lie, ... when these are your choices YOU ACCEPT IT AS NORMAL, NOT AS AWESOME
You just figure.... Hey, they are professionals and they are Artist's .
it took my generation 30 years to figure out how fucking good we had it BY SEEING COMMENTS LIKE YOURS
Make no mistake... YOUR GENERATION MAKES MY GENERATION UNDERSTAND WHAT WE HAD
but it was dreamy and cool and romantic and you could find a chick and get with her and it was cool because the music suited the mood
IT WAS A GOOD TIME TO BE ALIVE
IT WAS A GOOD TIME TO BE A KID
Everything was new and emerging
We had technology ... but not too much
We still had to do shit on our own and not be lazy
We learned respect and if we didn't we got a punch in the face and then we did learn it
LESSONS IN LIFE MATE... Simple as that
People can say what they like but if you go to school in the 80s and you decide your'e going to be a prick to someone
Sooner or later something is going to happen to you that makes you wish
you never fucking did that
you have the living fucked kicked out of you
AND AS A RESULT, WHEN YOUR'E AN ADULT, YOU'RE NOT A DICKHEAD
The system works
there was no hiding behind a keyboard
if you did shit, someone would threaten to bash you
if you hid from the bashing ....
- We'd get on our BMX Bikes and find where you lived (YES.. REALLY LOL) i guess it sounds funny now to say it, but yes this is what we did
- When you came outside, You'd be bashed
You couldn't run from a bashing, sooner or later you'd be somewhere where the other person was, School, the shops, your own house, whatever
and if you actively ran away from it.. YOU WERE A FUCKING PUSSY FOR LIFE.
IMPORTANT LESSONS WERE LEARNED
EVERYONE KNEW THE LESSONS
AND THE MUSIC WAS AWESOME
AND FIGHTS WERE FAIR, You went hard but everyone knew when enough was enough
you win the fight, you help the other guy up
if he did anything on the way up, he'd have the shit kicked out of him and then you leave him down
it was all fair
great time to be alive and i'd do it again in a heartbeat
Depending on what specifically you love about this song, I feel like there are bands like this, they're just not super popular or well known. Not in a hipster way, as in what constitutes "pop" music is just very different now.

Hall and Oates - Out of Touch Lyrics:
Shake it up is all that we know
Using the bodies up as we go
I'm waking up to fantasy
The shades all around
Aren't the colors we used to see
Broken ice still melts in the sun
And times that are broken
Can often be one again
We're soul alone
And soul really matters to me
Take a look around
You're out of touch
I'm out of time (time)
But I'm out of my head
When you're not around
You're out of touch
I'm out of time (time)
But I'm out of my head
When you're not around
Oh, oh-oh, oh
Oh, oh-oh, oh
Reaching out for something to hold
Looking for a love
Where the climate is cold
Manic moves and drowsy dreams
Or living in the middle
Between the two extremes
Smoking guns hot to the touch
Would cool down
If we didn't use them so much
We're soul alone
And soul really matters to me
Too much
You're out of touch
I'm out of time (time)
But I'm out of my head
When you're not around
You're out of touch
I'm out of time (time)
But I'm out of my head
When you're not around
Oh, oh-oh, oh
Oh, oh-oh, oh...
(Out of touch)
Out of touch
You're out of touch
I'm out of time (time)
But I'm out of my head
When you're not around
You're out of touch
I'm out of time (time)
But I'm out of my head
When you're not around..
Who’s listening this golden song in 2024
Me!!
Me!
Me!
This is why we call this song a classic, it never goes outta style
Yo!
to me daryl hall is one of the greatest musicians ever, composer, artist, musician, simply a genious, and also charismatic
The more time passes by, the better the 80's become.
I can picture GigaChad listening to this. Such a great influence he is
Dear hall and oates, When you fight, the fans will suffer!
Ain't that the truth? Geesh!!!! Protection orders and stalking... This is getting wild.
Sad but unfortunately true 😭😭😭
His Dancing_Style is amazing, I think I should copy it…😄
Shake it up is all that we know
Using the bodies up as we go
I'm waking up to fantasy
The shades all around aren't the colors we used to see
Broken ice still melts in the sun
And times that are broken can often be one again
We're soul alone
And soul really matters to me
Take a look around
You're out of touch
I'm out of time
But I'm out of my head when you're not around
You're out of touch
I'm out of time (time)
But I'm out of my head when you're not around
Oh oh oh oh oh oh
Reaching out for something to hold
Looking for a love where the climate is cold
Manic moves and drowsy dreams
Or living in the middle between the two extremes
Smoking guns hot to the touch
Would cool down if we didn't use them so much, yeah
We're soul alone
And soul really matters to me
Too much
You're out of touch
I'm out of time
But I'm out of my head when you're not around
You're out of touch
I'm out of time
But I'm out of my head when you're not around
Oh oh oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh oh oh
You're out of touch
I'm out of time
But I'm out of my head when you're not around
You're out of touch
I'm out of time
But I'm out of my head when you're not around
You're out of touch
Time
But I'm out of my head when you're not around
You're out of touch
I'm out of time
Not around
You're out of touch
I'm out of time
