The original version was recorded in German by the Austrian singer Falco, who had a #1 hit in the US in 1986 with "Rock Me Amadeus." His version of "Der Kommissar" was a dance-floor favorite in Europe, but unlikely to crack the American charts, so Falco encouraged English-speaking bands to record this song so he could make inroads in the States. After The Fire was a British foursome whose most notable member was former Yes synth-man Peter Banks. They released three fairly successful albums in England before their label, CBS Records, issued the Der Kommissar album in America. The title track became the group's only hit - their follow up was a song called "Dancing in the Shadows," which topped out at #85 in the US.

I can remember when MTV premiered. I think the very first video was " Video killed the radio star " by The Buggles. 1980 or 81. There was an older female VJ named Nina Blackwood that I had a crush on. And Martha Quinn.
Is there still MTV? I remember the first week of MTV, my older cousins bought it and we happen to visit them in Anaheim, CA. this was 1980 or 81, I was in disbelief that MTV played music 24/7.
This one hit wonder is still one of the best-and from early 1983. A cool song which is on THE AWESOME 80's collection. To grow up during the 1980's was wonderful.
They might be [Quote YOU] "a one hit wonder" [Unquote] where you live.... But in their own country of origin** they had several hits (Same nation as The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, etc, etc) Might surprise YOU this, BUT, the entire world DOES NOT revolve around the USA
@@hawnyfox3411 This ATF version was a small one-hit-wonder in Denmark, mostly known in discoteques. The original German version by Falco was a bigger hit here but not a one-hit since his "Amadeus" song became a mega-hit, and then Falco and more of his songs became known to most people. I believe, After The Fire was a big name in the UK but not in the US as I cand understand.
By one-hit wonder, you must mean After the Fire, who recorded this English-language cover of Falco's 1982 hit 'Der Kommissar,' because in 1986 Falco himself became the first and so far only recording artist to achieve a #1 hit in both the US and UK charts with a German-language song, 'Rock me Amadeus.' He also charted with several other singles and albums in those two largest English-speaking markets during the '80s and '90s, which makes him arguably the most successful modern German-language pop star in the Anglosphere.
Falco was Austrian, but he sang in German. I remember back when these were new they did play both on the radio stations, but this one got more airplay. I like Falco's version better personally, but this is a close second.
I love hearing these songs again. They take me back to a time where I would hear the songs while playing video arcade games at the same time. I was in my late teens then.
@@katty01 I love both versions, each one stands out on its own. Falco's has a more analog early-80s minimal sound while ATF has a fuller acoustic sound. I personally prefer the latter but Falco's is also unique :D

Yeah, just because one is better, it doesn't mean the other is worthless. We do that in this current culture all the time; "Anything that isn't first place is losing!" Ridiculous! Also, it's a logical fallacy.
@@robertmcpherson1617 I'd argue that most cover songs are worthless, even the good ones usually don't live up to the original.
Every time I hear the song start, it takes me back to those great years of awesome music and events that we lack at today's artists!
Just a great 80's song. I've danced to it more times than I can count.
40 años desde que la programaban en todas las radio emisoras pop de Chile ( 1983 ) ! Como no recordar tan hermoso tema que trajo tanta alegría en mi juventud ! Thanks a Lot After The Fire !🎸🎸🎸🥁🎹
All my teenage years were in the 80,s what a time to be alive, and I hope if there is an afterlife I hope there's a section for the 80,s people so we can still live this great era
Falco but great song! 👏 greetings from Argentina 🇦🇷
Understandably one of the most significant tracks of the 80s
Leon from South Dakota here. The 80's frickin Rocked I don't care what anyone says!!
Bruce Springsteen is a draft dodger
A fast 40 years. Still love this one.
Good song here! The 1980s was definitely a good time period for music.
"The more you live the faster you will die."
AKA burning the candle at both ends.
There is so much truth to that...
The days go by, like a week. The years go by, like a day ☹️
In german the line (roughly translated) is "If He asks you and you know why tell him your life is killing you" :)
ignore my cheap its all abot
The singer has a very unique voice.
I was born in 1975 which I got to hear all the great songs from the 80s and early 90s. Also elementary , middle and high school all in the 80s.. take me back please 😥
This is one of the rare occasions when the original and the cover are great, and none of them sound poor after years.
This is the cleanest hitting song you can play in a club with big JBL speakers and huge 1500 watt amps it will blow your socks off
Definitely great memories of the 80s .. love it
Danke Lord, for letting me grow up during the greatest period of time in all of history.. Ja..
Such a catchy chorus in both versions! I love it!
Best era in music by far , and still kicking ass! Don't think I go a week without hearing an 80's song in some tv show or movie . If you didn't grow up in that time period, it's ok we got all the music on these new things called cd' s, they are great ! 😎🤘
Love it this era was just records on LPs then CDs and imgination. Same as movies after the turn of the century VHS tapes and imagination made my adolescense. Jean claude van dammes round houses, schwarzenneggers Ill be backs and get downs.. Bruce Willis' yippee ki yay mofo's
I could go on forever and ever
@@jonw8435 it was great they was no political brainwashing in the movies well only against the Russians lol 😂
Makes me glad we have this technology so we can still HEAR the 1980's!
im 50 and remember this like it was yesterday
I was an exchange student in Denmark when this was a hit. Always amazed me when I came home how many German songs were hits - loved the 80’s!!!
Great song for a great decade
What a great tune. This and the original, love it.
One of the best songs and videos of the 80's
Remember when MTV actually used to play music??
Ah, those were the days...
I can remember when MTV premiered. I think the very first video was " Video killed the radio star " by The Buggles. 1980 or 81. There was an older female VJ named Nina Blackwood that I had a crush on. And Martha Quinn.
@Jamie Petteford Not entirely sure what that is but okay.
Yes I do
yes i do
I would put this in the top 10 for best 80s songs. This song has such an interesting structure and it's guaranteed to turn the party.
When MTV didn't suck!
MTV classic is doing a pretty good job at playing music videos!!!
Is there still MTV? I remember the first week of MTV, my older cousins bought it and we happen to visit them in Anaheim, CA. this was 1980 or 81, I was in disbelief that MTV played music 24/7.
hey if you have seen mtv at riddulous neess inet clips >< see the air head white american women @ (channel west coast ) what is mtv ?? so sad ..
Right!!
We need MTV from 80s again.
Thank God I grew up in the 80s!! The music was the best, and still is!!xo😊💃🕺👍
The good old days! I love that hissing sound at the end of the video must be off the original VHS tape from MTV.
Same
Class of 84 in the house . 40 year reunion next month .
Have some good 80s fun, especially for me.
Class of 79 here.
Class of '83 present.
Muy buena rola saludos desde Austin Texas, alguien en el mundo escuchando,11.48 Domingo 25 de Enero.
This one hit wonder is still one of the best-and from early 1983. A cool song which is on THE AWESOME 80's collection. To grow up during the 1980's was wonderful.
them making us live in fear of nuclear war to keep sheep from turning into goats was wonderful
They might be [Quote YOU] "a one hit wonder" [Unquote] where you live....
But in their own country of origin** they had several hits
(Same nation as The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, etc, etc)
Might surprise YOU this, BUT, the entire world DOES NOT revolve around the USA
@@hawnyfox3411 This ATF version was a small one-hit-wonder in Denmark, mostly known in discoteques. The original German version by Falco was a bigger hit here but not a one-hit since his "Amadeus" song became a mega-hit, and then Falco and more of his songs became known to most people. I believe, After The Fire was a big name in the UK but not in the US as I cand understand.
@@FlongowildVienna calling is also a hit apparently
By one-hit wonder, you must mean After the Fire, who recorded this English-language cover of Falco's 1982 hit 'Der Kommissar,' because in 1986 Falco himself became the first and so far only recording artist to achieve a #1 hit in both the US and UK charts with a German-language song, 'Rock me Amadeus.' He also charted with several other singles and albums in those two largest English-speaking markets during the '80s and '90s, which makes him arguably the most successful modern German-language pop star in the Anglosphere.
Originally by Falco. Sadly he was drugged out beyond all recognition and died in a car accident. He was such an amazing musician.
He died in a drunk driving accident. I went to his funeral. He had battled addiction for many years. It was very sad.
@@melindahajdin You're BOTH correct. He had both plus marijuana in his system when he collided with a bus in the Dominican Republic on Feb. 6, 1998.
I love this song it take me back to the early 80's any way's thank you for having it here for my listening pleasure .
This was and still is the cutt from back in the day , chuck!!
I grew up only knowing this version, but I like both this and Falco's original German version.
Have you heard Laura Branigan's version? It's called Deep In the Dark.
How falco is not here
@@marioiacolucci he is, look at the bartender at the end. If you need to stop the vid. :)
@@davidmiller9485 no that isn't.
Falco was Austrian, but he sang in German. I remember back when these were new they did play both on the radio stations, but this one got more airplay. I like Falco's version better personally, but this is a close second.
One of the songs that was a part of making the 80's the great decade of music that it was. Also one of the best dance songs.
I'M AN 80'S CHILD!, 80'S FOREVER!.
YEAH! Me too!
ME TOO🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
I love hearing these songs again. They take me back to a time where I would hear the songs while playing video arcade games at the same time. I was in my late teens then.
Love 80’s .. there is nothing to compare. Great hit 👍🏻😊
I've only just come across this song I absolutely love it 😍
I'm nearly 18 yet I can't stop listening to this! Long live the 80s
I'm 18 years old and I love this song!
@@jesusdominguez105 🙌
@@laredogrande6183 glad I got the opportunity to grow up with that too! 😆
Oh honey, u gotta listen to Falco. 100x better! That's what my dad payed to me when I was 5 in 2006 with our old DVD 🥺
@@katty01 I love both versions, each one stands out on its own. Falco's has a more analog early-80s minimal sound while ATF has a fuller acoustic sound. I personally prefer the latter but Falco's is also unique :D
Loved the 80’s especially in Hawaii where I grew up.
I am the 80’s❤
Me too!!
i love how the opening vocals of this song are spoken word kind of like RAP music, random access poetry to a rhythm
If you really want a treat, watch the original German version by Falco
Falco is the best!!!
