The original version was recorded in German by the Austrian singer Falco, who had a #1 hit in the US in 1986 with "Rock Me Amadeus." His version of "Der Kommissar" was a dance-floor favorite in Europe, but unlikely to crack the American charts, so Falco encouraged English-speaking bands to record this song so he could make inroads in the States. They released three fairly successful albums in England before their label, CBS Records, issued the Der Kommissar album in America. The title track became the group's only hit - their follow up was a song called "Dancing in the Shadows," which topped out at #85 in the US.

Yeah, just because one is better, it doesn't mean the other is worthless. We do that in this current culture all the time; "Anything that isn't first place is losing!" Ridiculous! Also, it's a logical fallacy.
Guys, just calm down already. Don't think of it as an insult, rather consider it as a tribute to Falco's song. The beat is nearly identical and the lyrical translation is almost 100% accurate. America loved the song and wanted to make a version everybody could understand. That's how much of an influence in pop music Falco had back then!!
Plus, during the 80's, this version got more radio play in the states, because it was all in English. Falco's was better, but this one was a fixture of that time frame.
I'm 45 and I've just heard this version for the first time in my life. Growing up in the communist Czechoslovakia was not easy, but in the south we could catch Austrian TV and that meant, among other things, Falco.
@@katty01 I love both versions, each one stands out on its own. Falco's has a more analog early-80s minimal sound while ATF has a fuller acoustic sound. I personally prefer the latter but Falco's is also unique :D

If you really want a treat, watch the original German version by Falco
Falco is the best!!!
Man I keep playing this song over and over love it !!!!!
I'M AN 80'S CHILD!, 80'S FOREVER!.
YEAH! Me too!
ME TOO🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
Falco but great song! 👏 greetings from Argentina 🇦🇷
ATF were from England, not America.
Oh, you're right!! I don't know why America came to my mind, sorry for that :)
Plus, during the 80's, this version got more radio play in the states, because it was all in English. Falco's was better, but this one was a fixture of that time frame.
But Falco didn't authorize them to use this the record label did and he was upset about it that's why the record industry is Crooks

This song rocked my world in the old 80’s.. The 70and80’s were a great time to be young…
Just a great 80's song. I've danced to it more times than I can count.
Great song and video. She's a beauty alright. It never gets old.
Makes me glad we have this technology so we can still HEAR the 1980's!
I'm 45 and I've just heard this version for the first time in my life. Growing up in the communist Czechoslovakia was not easy, but in the south we could catch Austrian TV and that meant, among other things, Falco.
Yep, the 80s had the best music by far.
Ohhhhh lordy do I ever! I can't express how much I loved 80's music 🎶 and the aura of it! Keeps me going!
I'm nearly 18 yet I can't stop listening to this! Long live the 80s
I'm 18 years old and I love this song!
@@jesusdominguez105 🙌
@@laredogrande6183 glad I got the opportunity to grow up with that too! 😆
Oh honey, u gotta listen to Falco. 100x better! That's what my dad payed to me when I was 5 in 2006 with our old DVD 🥺
@@katty01 I love both versions, each one stands out on its own. Falco's has a more analog early-80s minimal sound while ATF has a fuller acoustic sound. I personally prefer the latter but Falco's is also unique :D
Anyone else dressing up in 2024?😊
40 años desde que la programaban en todas las radio emisoras pop de Chile ( 1983 ) ! Como no recordar tan hermoso tema que trajo tanta alegría en mi juventud ! Thanks a Lot After The Fire !🎸🎸🎸🥁🎹
I love Falco's original German version the most, but I also love this English version as well. Thank you for uploading this version with the English subtitles.
It Was...A GREAT TIME To Be Young & Alive!
@The_Jaguar_ Knight Yeah I fucking hate myself for not having experienced the 80s. Seriously.
I was unfortunately way too young. Born in '81. I wish I was born at least ten years sooner.
It was if one wasn't being tortured by family problems.
Yeah it was

Best era in music by far , and still kicking ass! Don't think I go a week without hearing an 80's song in some tv show or movie . If you didn't grow up in that time period, it's ok we got all the music on these new things called cd' s, they are great ! 😎🤘
Love it this era was just records on LPs then CDs and imgination. Same as movies after the turn of the century VHS tapes and imagination made my adolescense. Jean claude van dammes round houses, schwarzenneggers Ill be backs and get downs.. Bruce Willis' yippee ki yay mofo's
I could go on forever and ever
@@jonw8435 it was great they was no political brainwashing in the movies well only against the Russians lol 😂
The good old days! I love that hissing sound at the end of the video must be off the original VHS tape from MTV.
Same
Great song!! 👏
Every time I hear the song start, it takes me back to those great years of awesome music and events that we lack at today's artists!
I was an exchange student in Denmark when this was a hit. Always amazed me when I came home how many German songs were hits - loved the 80’s!!!
Good song here! The 1980s was definitely a good time period for music.
This song had a regular rotation on MTV back in the 80's. Loved watching it stoned I would just trip out on all the videos.
... alles klar Herr Kommissar - Great 80's
Damn she is gorgeous
Bomb Tombadil and right now there are little kids running around somewhere that simply know her as "grandma".
Married to Midge Ure IIRC.
@@Dog6Romeo Who have no idea they aren't even a fifth as pretty as their grandmother was.
Probably still is.
Bomb Tombadil Legend has it that she's the girl reading this.
MTV memories from the 80's brought me here.
What a great tune. This and the original, love it.
Love 80’s .. there is nothing to compare. Great hit 👍🏻😊
Such a catchy chorus in both versions! I love it!
Goodness, I was 17 when this song came out. While I was living through the 80s, I had no idea how wonderful our music was. I mean, I loved it, but I just figured all eras of music were and would always be that good. But here we are in the era of Cardi B., Ed Sheeran, and Justin Bieber, which convinces me that we have fallen from musical heaven and are being tormented in musical hell, ladies and gentlemen. Scary times we're living in.
True my friend oh, so true
Good job comparing Ed Sheeran to Justin Bieber...
@@Atombender , thanks. I have listened to both artists, and I am dumbfounded by how insipid and predictable their music is.
I was born in 1984 so I don't remember much, of course. But I have super fond feelings for the early 2000's. And as I was living through it I *DID* notice how awesome it was, luckily.
I totally agree! Who knew music would ever get bad
Thanks to youtube, you can relive your childhood. I miss my MTV though!
Back to the roller rink.......all skate.......love the 80.s
"Don't turn around... uh-oh! Your in-laws are in town... uh-oh!"
You wrote this three years ago and I just saw it today! This is funny as hell! "Don't turn around, uh-oh! Your in-laws are in town, uh-oh," (Joelzalott, 2015). Yessss!
And as the old saying goes... the best Christmas lights are the tail lights of the in laws leaving out of the driveway.

Ah growing up during the New Wave days was fun.
A fast 40 years. Still love this one.
Loved the 80’s especially in Hawaii where I grew up.
I've had the phrase "The more you live the faster you will die" on my checks since 1990.
Absolutely. I am 58 and it saddens me how things have turned out. Just bought Amiga forever - a computer emulation and also listening to the exciting early computer music too and times..
