I worked in a Soho bar in NYC in the early 2000's. All kinds of folk in the middle of it all. And musicians mixed with artists mixed with movie folk. A haven if equality, so to say. And everyone knew everyone's business, game or not. There was one customer that came in occasionally for lunch. Quite, unassuming and silently amiable. One of us. But the only one we never asked a name of..
Joe Jackson's always been a Class Act. I can't believe he's still touring. I just saw him do this song LIVE on tour here on YT a minute ago, now, in 2024!!
This is one of the first videos I ever saw -- while staying at a friend's house who had MTV. The song and the video are both held up extremely well. Can't be said for all videos of that era.

Nothing flashes me back to the 80's faster than when I hear this song. Being a Teenager of the 1980's was the absolute best! Such a beautiful time to be alive.
I started working in NYC in 1981. I stayed in a hotel (Essex House) and I could envision this song in my mind taking place at that hotel. It had the off-white paneled doors and all. What a great experience.

OMG I’ve been trying to identify this song for YEARS. 😩 I have heard it at EVERY grocery store I’ve either worked at or shopped at. Never heard it clearly. But wow. After 20 years, I am finally here.
Jackson spent a number of years living in New York City, which served as an inspiration for his 1982 song "Steppin' Out". In a 2018 interview, Jackson said "I don't like New York much these days. It's as if the city and I had a hot love affair and now we're just friends, but we still have to see each other to remain friends. Today I live in Berlin. The New York I knew in late '81 and '82 is gone."
It's a case of you don't know how good it is, until it's over, and then you see the reflection of a time that most likely will never happen again, and so badly want it back, it was magical and scary, end of the cold war, back when it was Japan was making everything, would love for Japan to manufacture lots more, instead of the other country that we now can't seem to exist without, it was a time when everything seemed possible, now it's all group and identity think police, and thinking incorrectly is not tolerated, whatever that means, I guess some other human's will tell you what's correct and what's not correct, in the Eighties free speech was cool, and not everyone agrees, but we all should aspire to freedom, was there bad , well of course, name a point in history when there wasn't bad, but the good out classed the bad, was it only America, no, Europe and Brazil, and Japan, were there war's, is there a time there isn't, not massively all consuming conflict though, but let's get to putting things in play for a future 80s decade, for the Whole World is involved, and where Freedom is the history of forever, my favorite sitcom is NightCourt and you don't get more Eighties then that
We live in a very oddball world and listening to music from the past 60’s through to the 90’s somehow helps me and other like minded people escape this depressive and dreary life. AJ
Took me ages to find it..I could hum the tune but couldn't recall any lyrics apart from into the night. Some nasty songs turned up in the search. Happy to find it finally after a couple of hours
There is something special about this song that is hard to describe. It's a feeling, a mood. Something between melancholy and happiness. Something that only this song is capable of.
This song alternates between a feeling of excitement and hopeful anticipation and a certain feeling of sadness and regret. It's as if the song is expressing a feeling of hope for the future tempered by a negativity of past events that could detail those plans. Story of my life right now.
@@sidgar1 Very well said! You got this!Don't be afraid to get rid of those in your life who have a smile on there face and knife behind there back...even family or others around you!
I kinda feel sorry for people who didn’t get to experience the 80s in person. So much nostalgia and coming of age (for some of us). I spent the 80s from age 10 to 20, so pretty much carefree and enjoying my time. These songs put me back in that headspace.
First listened this when I was 12 years old playing GTA Vice City at Flash FM radio, now I'm 28 years old and still loving this amazing masterpiece, really would like to go back in time to the 80's
I hated the 80s and 90s music with a passion. I was born in 1966 and often wished I was born 10 years earlier because I loved 70s music so much,. Sure, there were some great songs from the 80s and 90s, but the vast majority was simply awful. We remember the past through rose-tinted glasses, but I remember very clearly at the time envying my older brother because he was a teenager when all the great 70s bands were putting out new records. But that just,, like, my opinion, man.

The 80’s were so fun and carefree. Man I miss it.
This song makes me happy and sad at the same time. Wish we could just go back to this era. Life was so simple then.
The song gives me the same feeling. Like you wish every night could feel like this...
Amen to that, i could not agree more. Well said.
Agreed... Perfectly said
We just didn't know how complicated it was.
What is it with this song? Does the same thing to me.
Being a kid in the eighties was the highlight of my entire existence. This song brings back some really strong memories. Long live the eighties!!

One of us.

No matter how many times I hear this song, it never fails to evoke some precious, yet unremembered, emotion

Joe Jackson's always been a Class Act. I can't believe he's still touring. I just saw him do this song LIVE on tour here on YT a minute ago, now, in 2024!!
You kids have no idea how good it was before 90
Early 80's and this playing on MTV a couple times an hour it seemed. Good times.
This is one of the first videos I ever saw -- while staying at a friend's house who had MTV. The song and the video are both held up extremely well. Can't be said for all videos of that era.

As a black kid growing up in the projects I will never forget the October Monday morning in '94 where it was the day of one of my friends' funeral in the grocery store today, and it certainly took me right back to the early ‘80s again. . I had energy enough to light New York at night. This song was on my clock radio as I was waking up and I was just on my clock radio as I was waking up. It was a friend who really touched my life and gave me the appreciation for humor. His legacy will always live on and every time I hear this song it brings me back to that day and the fact that life is truly short. She'll turn 40 on Halloween.

Joe Jackson and Level 42 are two of the best artists of the 80s, hands down!!!!!!!!!!!!
Still sounds wicked 34 years on. That won't be said about 99% of today's shit in 2050.

I'll be 82 then! Hopefully still intact mentally. Would be good if you stayed alive for that year mate.
Right with you on that, that's exactly what todays music is......total shite.

The melody of this song still sounds great 40+ years later!
Facetina. Joe Jackson, "Big World" album reflects on so much of what you've stated here.
1982 New York is unimaginable to anyone under 40. A dark mix of magic and sleaze that will never again rise to be...
@@niklass1641 people change
@@naturesfinest4871 Precisely. Which is why I clearly stated people under 40 can't imagine what 1982 NY was like, not in their wildest dreams.

Who doesn't miss it? It was just great just great. These old MTV videos bring back so many memories 😌
Amen.
It's a case of you don't know how good it is, until it's over, and then you see the reflection of a time that most likely will never happen again, and so badly want it back, it was magical and scary, end of the cold war, back when it was Japan was making everything, would love for Japan to manufacture lots more, instead of the other country that we now can't seem to exist without, it was a time when everything seemed possible, now it's all group and identity think police, and thinking incorrectly is not tolerated, whatever that means, I guess some other human's will tell you what's correct and what's not correct, in the Eighties free speech was cool, and not everyone agrees, but we all should aspire to freedom, was there bad , well of course, name a point in history when there wasn't bad, but the good out classed the bad, was it only America, no, Europe and Brazil, and Japan, were there war's, is there a time there isn't, not massively all consuming conflict though, but let's get to putting things in play for a future 80s decade, for the Whole World is involved, and where Freedom is the history of forever, my favorite sitcom is NightCourt and you don't get more Eighties then that
I miss it because, quite simply, it was the time of my youth, and my coming of age.
ME TOO
The 80s was my best decade. I miss that life.
*So Glorious Eighties! So New York! So Cosmopolitan Lifestyle! THE TIMELESS ROMANCE OF IT ALL!*
And just love the driving synth on this!
We live in a very oddball world and listening to music from the past 60’s through to the 90’s somehow helps me and other like minded people escape this depressive and dreary life.

There is something special about this song that is hard to describe. It's a feeling, a mood. Something between melancholy and happiness. Something that only this song is capable of.
La mélodie est d'enfer,il n'y a besoin de comprendre les paroles
This song alternates between a feeling of excitement and hopeful anticipation and a certain feeling of sadness and regret. It's as if the song is expressing a feeling of hope for the future tempered by a negativity of past events that could detail those plans. Story of my life right now.
