I was 9 when this song came out in 1982. I heard it in the grocery store today, and it certainly took me right back to the early ‘80s again. Life was so, so simple back then. I didn’t know it, but my career in computers was about to begin with a Commodore 64 in the wings. Roller rinks, arcades, bowling, hanging with friends in real life for hours till dark…and amazing music like this. I hope kids reading this can enjoy some of that spirit through this song. It’s not easy, but put down the phone and just enjoy the sights and sounds of life and the world around you…time flies!!
You know, I got to go along with you. I too was 9 when this came out. It sure does bring back memories. Though mine was for the Atari computer and not the Commodore lol
I was 9 as well! Thanks for the memory lane trip with your comment. My older brother graduated to the commodore 64. I was still playing Qbert on my Atari and probably just retired my Merlin a few months prior. :)
🏆🏆 Best comment ever. Wow! I was 10, & lived every word of the life you describe. My dad was an engineer for texas instruments. He bought me a TI 99/4A microcomputer in 1983, the next year. I did learn some Basic, & by year 2000 was an expert with Windows 2000/ Windows NT. But my career was in heavy engine work & electronic fuel injection. Computers? Not so much 🎼💜
Always will remind me of my mum..even at 80 before passing june 2020 and suffering from Dementia, This was the last CD I bought her for her 80th birthday, she would play it full blast and come alive from the shell she was trapped in *Iris* 10/12/1939 -28/6/2020

I met Joe Jackson in the 1980s when he did an interview in a different department of my TV network. I saw him carrying his guitar to the elevator when I called to him to say hello. He got off the elevator and took a few minutes to visit with me before getting on with his day. What a great talent and nice guy!
OMG I’ve been trying to identify this song for YEARS. 😩 I have heard it at EVERY grocery store I’ve either worked at or shopped at. Never heard it clearly. But wow. After 20 years, I am finally here.
Nothing flashes me back to the 80's faster than when I hear this song. Being a Teenager of the 1980's was the absolute best! Such a beautiful time to be alive.
I kinda feel sorry for people who didn’t get to experience the 80s in person. So much nostalgia and coming of age (for some of us). I spent the 80s from age 10 to 20, so pretty much carefree and enjoying my time. These songs put me back in that headspace.
There is something special about this song that is hard to describe. It's a feeling, a mood. Something between melancholy and happiness. Something that only this song is capable of.
This song alternates between a feeling of excitement and hopeful anticipation and a certain feeling of sadness and regret. It's as if the song is expressing a feeling of hope for the future tempered by a negativity of past events that could detail those plans. Story of my life right now.

This is one of the first videos I ever saw -- while staying at a friend's house who had MTV. The song and the video are both held up extremely well. Can't be said for all videos of that era.
A lot of people saying this song takes them back to the Eighties. True enough, but it is so beautifully timeless that I can attach it to anything - past, present or future.
A lot of us were rather young when we first heard this song. That is why it takes so many of us back to a simpler time, when we didn't have near the amount of BS to contend with like we do nowadays.
Everytime I think of this song by Joe Jackson, it makes me think of my father, he use to play this song when we took road Trips, oh how I miss those days. I miss you Dad!!
This song is like a big door opening and saying. “This way to the eighties kids…it’s going to be a giant decade of super music!” And Joe was among those leading the way. Cheers.
And what a great decade it was for music! The Eighties were the last great decade for music - there were some great songs in the early 90's too, but since then, only a spare song good here and there.
Joe Jackson's always been a Class Act. I can't believe he's still touring. I just saw him do this song LIVE on tour here on YT a minute ago, now, in 2024!!
GenX kids let’s go back to this moment in time where everything made sense and life was truly magical. If only we could step back out into the 80’s to relive these moments again. ❤
don't think this was underappreciated at the time you couldn't go 30 minutes without it on the radio. fun fact, when this came out a 19" LCD TV cost $20,000 I remember the moment exactly.
Very bad recession in the US. I was telling a friend how poor used to be different- although maybe coming back there. Poor Americans would often have duck tape holding their poc car together, they'd be wearing clothes the upper class hadn't worn in a decade, and would almost never be overweight, govt largess at the time wasn't enough for that.
Those eighties made me who i am now, they had a great impact on my life as a young adult and now at 60-year-old I still wonder why did everything went so fast once the fun in life began IT'S BITTER SWEET EMOTION when you look back at those days, and it still surprises me to witness how extreme things can change in one generation !!
The piano on this tune is magical. The chords, the vocals. It grabbed my attention long ago when I was at work one day, early 1980s, and I thought it was great. Something unique about it. Now I’m 70 years old, and I still enjoy hearing it. JJ is a talented writer, singer, and pianist. Certainly underrated.
I hated the 80s and 90s music with a passion. I was born in 1966 and often wished I was born 10 years earlier because I loved 70s music so much,. Sure, there were some great songs from the 80s and 90s, but the vast majority was simply awful. We remember the past through rose-tinted glasses, but I remember very clearly at the time envying my older brother because he was a teenager when all the great 70s bands were putting out new records. But that just,, like, my opinion, man.
Great comment, LaChant Tyson! I was in 2nd grade when this song came out. Our school bus had a stereo and this song would play in the way to school... it always reminds me of being a little boy, and how happy life for me was back then..it was a real pleasure to grow up in the 80's!
I am embarrassed to say that I absolutely HATE this song...have since the first time I heard it, and I came back today wanting to like it. It's not as bad as I remember, but there is just something about it I really cannot stand. He is SO talented and it's a great song, I just hate it. LOL Does that make sense? I will not take any due credit from him, because it was a HUGE hit and still is as fresh as it ever was. I know there are song I truly love and people look at me asking, "SERIOUSLY!? WHY?!" This song is one of those on the reverse for me. I love the '80s, I grew up gay in the '80s and love everything about it...except this song. LOL Cheers, all. EIGHTIES ROCK FOREVER!!!
@LaChant Tyson - I take it you're not English, brother? Life for English working-class people during the dictatorship of Margaret Thatcher was anything BUT joyful, however it's still an exquisite tune!
I can't quite believe that this gem is 40 years old! One of those precious songs that feel new & current & has the power to take you away to another place... timeless
I was 20 yrs old when this song came out. Remember watching this video on mtv many times. Back when you could sit and watch mtv for hours. It was always on in the background when you had friends over or just doing stuff around the house. Man, I miss those times. Young, full of energy, mtv playing in the background while you were getting ready to go out on the town with your friends.
Took me ages to find it..I could hum the tune but couldn't recall any lyrics apart from into the night. Some nasty songs turned up in the search. Happy to find it finally after a couple of hours
Absolutely blessed to have lived my teenage years in the 80's and caught all the music as it was created and released. An unforgettable decade, never to be repeated.
It's impossible to describe the feelings I get when I hear this song. So much about the 80s vibe--which you can't fully appreciate unless you've lived it--comes back & takes me right back to those simpler times. Hats off to Joe Jackson for creating a timeless classic.
I know it. The 80s was a special decade, and it wasn't just the music and pop culture. I still can't put my finger on it, but the 80s was one awesome decade. ❤
It hurts so much but still I reach out for the memories; you don’t what you’ve lost til it’s gone. If you lived in the 80s there was plenty reasons to hate and fear it; maybe that made me experience it more deeply
Man, this song makes me want to go back to the 80's so bad. The beat, the video, the scenery, its all there. I agree with you. Its impossible to describe the feelings one gets from being a part of the greatest decade in modern American history; the incredible 80's.
This song takes me back to a wonderful time in my life. I was 20, dating a special man... working my first job and going to night school on a scholarship. My whole life was ahead of me. Love this song.
Took me 20yrs to the day to finally know the name of this let alone who performed it. Back in the 80’s my mom would play this on Friday night when she was getting ready to roll out with her girls.
hey man, you're not the only one. i would hear this song but they never said who it was. i was in the mall and the guy working in the sound shop (back in the 90's) told me to hum the tune and then he instantly started singing it. i loved this song as a kid and when it came on the radio, my mom would dance with me. this song always puts me in a good mood and makes me want to go out. by the way, i'm black and i love this song
