Funny, only recently I stumbled upon a Startreck Episode based on 1989.
Its pretty flaverfull if you get the Reference. In both Cases.

not beeimg good does not equal beeing bad. Each of these episodes had its strenghts and good jokes. The stuff that did not work was characters acting out of character, tho they were still somewhat following their usual characteristics. I always saw it as a minor inconsistency like the layout of bikini bottom and stuff like that

@@Hamantha It's because they are being blinded by nostalgia. A lot of times, we may think of something we used to enjoy when we were younger as being the greatest thing ever, only to revisit it and find it's not as perfect as we remembered it as. But nostalgia tends to make things more rose-colored by comparison, especially if we block out the worse parts intentionally
Well, there aren't bad classic episodes in Spongebob, but some of them are worse.
After I read "The Tell-Tale Heart" in 9th grade, I appreciated "Squeaky Boots" even more for referencing Edgar Allen Poe in a children's cartoon

Since Squidville was paired with Grandma's Kisses, I viewed Squidward's house being destroyed as karma for bullying Spongebob.

It's funny. Both that episode and Pizza Delivery are two of many awesome episodes that get into Squidward's head and help us understand his disconnect with SpongeBob and help develop his character into someone who understands SpongeBob's more childish tendencies a little bit more. And yet, they're paired with two of his most antagonistic appearances.

I thought "The Great Snail Race" was pretty alright. It's definitely uncomfortable to watch Gary in pain, but I feel like that's the point, especially for the parents who might be listening in. Some parents push their kids way too hard just so they can brag to other parents, without stopping to think that their kids might be hurting from it. After this episode, they might reflect for a moment as to whether they themselves should check in and see how their child is actually feeling.
I do agree that it felt out of character for Spongebob to act that way, though. Maybe they could've switched Spongebob and Squidward's attitudes - where Spongebob is competing in a snail race just for fun, and Squidward enters his snail for the sole purpose of beating Spongebob. Gary trains hard but still gets plenty of rest and care from Spongebob, while Squidward pushes his snail to the point that it collapses on the track. From his defeat, Squidward is reminded that it's not fair to force yourself or someone else to work 24/7, just for the sake of having bragging rights for a little while. And Spongebob and Gary show that, even when you do work hard, your work should never take priority over your well-being.
Exactly, if Spongebob and Squidward were switched it would've been pretty alright
And there's couple of jokes that i liked in this episode:

The sad thing is that Disney's purely animated division is still putting in some actual effort.
However, the efforts of their animated division have been greatly overshadow by their far wore live activation department. At this rate, Disney's live action department feels like they have lost ALL INSPIRATION.
Honestly, the ONLY live action project I have any interest from them in the near future is Jungle Book 2. Even then, that depends if they base it off the original book or if it's just a retread of the animated sequel. If it's the later, I'm running for the hills. The rest of their live action remakes need to be scrapped far sooner than later. Regardless of whether Walt himself actually wanted his company to remake movies or not.

The climax of grandma's kisses really hits home for me, as an age regressor myself. Sometimes you just absolutely don't want to grow up and want to go back to the times where you were just a carefree child getting cookies and sleeping with teddies. I understand the rest of this episode, but SpongeBobs tantrum just absolutely hits me and is a heartbreaking scene to watch.

same here, even before i started age regressing i could really sympathize with the feeling of being scared to grow up and cracking under the pressure and just wanting to be a kid again
I actually agree. Especially since many kids, teens, and even adults feel pressured to grow up or think it's cool to grow up and that childish things are "lame." So many shows show growing up as awful as a way to counter this mindset and that your life will be dull and boring, but this episode shows it as you don't have to give up the things you enjoy just because you're an adult. It's refreshing. My only issue with the episode is Squidward and the town--I can see some people bullying him for that, but not as many, and I don't see Squidward caring. He just doesn't want to be bothered.

All of these episodes had some of the most iconic cartoon moments of the 2000s. The "worst" episodes, but with a very high standard so to speak.

To be honest, I had always liked some of these episodes like "Dumped" and "The Great Snail Race". The ladder because it gives a lesson that needs to be said today where parents and teachers are encouraged to push their kids to unrealistic limits at times (have you seen "Dance Moms"?) . But I agree with "Party Pooper Pants" (even as a kid, I thought something felt wrong). As for "I'm With Stupid", I was alright with it until MrEnter pointed out how much of a jerk Patrick was.
I'm the only one who likes party pooper pants I thought it was entertaining and funny. One episode that is deftly mean spirited is grandma's kisses if that episode was made today it would be ripped to shreds
I'm With Stupid was such an awful episode. It even really pissed me off as a kid to watch.

Honestly, I actually really like Grandma's Kisses, because it keeps with the theme of SpongeBob being seen as too childish, but learning that as long as he's willing to take responsibility for his life and carry is own weight, there's no problem with his childlike spirit (and SpongeBob's breakdown at the end makes sense after being made fun of his lifestyle, and being lead to believe that being mature means he has to give up everything that makes him happy, including showing affection to his loving family).

Grandma’s Kisses is actually my favorite episode of the entire classic era, my grandpa passed away last year after a car accident. I’m so happy my grandma survived because I feel so close to her more than ever in my life! I even recorded myself singing I want to hold your hand as her birthday last month...she loved it. It’s beautiful that I can hug her every day now! Thanks for including it!

Grandma's Kisses made me almost cry when SpongeBob said "I DON'T WANNA GROW UP" and that. If I were SpongeBob and if that was my grandmother, my grandma, I'd tell her a confession about the guys at the Krusty Krab and Patrick was and had been helping me become a man and she would've totally understand and try help me out. I would give 100% of credit to Stephen Hillenburg for the episode, even though he may've realized that it was the worst episode he had/has ever made.

“Dumped” is the beginning of Patrick being a scumbag of a friend, and he consistently became a worse friend and person as the series continued. Change my mind.

@@animeboy7082 Patrick just wanted to be Gary's friend and after seeing Gary didn't turn back with Spongebob, he tried to calm him, he wasn't bad. And the episode is funny, it has got 4 or 5 memorable jokes.
Fun fact: The part where Mr krabs breaks down in squeaky boots is inspired by the tell tale heart by Edgar Allen Poe.

I don’t dislike any of these episodes, but I will agree that they’re easily some of the weakest of the first 3 seasons (AKA some of the most entertaining and quotable television ever made and I won’t hear otherwise) With the exception of Squilliam Returns and of course, New Student Starfish, which gave me one of my favorite lines of all time (you know what I’m talking about)

Grandma’s kisses taught an important lesson to me when I was younger. It shows no matter what happens, you’ll always get your brother’s, sister’s, parent’s etc. love. I think it teaches wonderful things about love when you’re an adult. But when you want to be babied keep it private because it shows the consequences of what happens when in public.

I don’t mind a cheap premise as long as the episode is enjoyable. I like it fine, but they could’ve had a better reason for spongebob to want to be more mature. Also that ending shot of squidward and everyone laughing at the window was p unnecessary

the gorilla episode was so terrifying. especially since it was the last one on the dvd and then you had nothing afterwards to cleanse the terrifying aura the entire episode has. the gorilla isn’t the only part that makes it terrifying, the entire episode has a certain darkness around it that makes it difficult to watch. i’d have to rewatch it to be able to put my finger on it but omg was it scary.

The fact we never see Squidward's "pure bred snail" again before or after The Great Snail Race just adds to how petty SpongeBob's over-training was. Especially in the episode where he had to look after Gary. You'd think if he had a snail of his own at the time, he'd know to take better care of him.
Grandma's Kisses always depressed me as a kid especially since my grandmother was the only grandparent I only ever got to meet and she died before I was even 2 years old

I agree that SpongeBob’s descent into sadness is hard to watch, but I think it effectively shows how hard it can be to lose a friend. HOWEVER, I _hated_ how Patrick acted in the episode. He basically turned against SpongeBob so far that it’s like he lost two friends!
I think they could have massively improved the episode by having Patrick try to encourage Gary to go back to SpongeBob, and not accuse SpongeBob of failing Gary.

I liked “dumped” because it reminded me of those bad sitcoms of couples breaking up, getting together, and the other screaming come back to me

I always thought the lost episode "The Sponge who could Fly" was also pretty bad.

@@dadjackwillextras2887 Patchys segment was great. He did a good job in Atlantis Squarepantis as well, despite the episode itself being bad.
Honestly I love The Great Snail Race because it perfectly captures the idea of those parents that push their child to the limits to win a sporting event. And unlike A Pal For Gary, it actually has a happy ending, with Gary falling in love with Snelly and Spongebob actually apologizing. Plus there a lot of funny moments like when it shows Patrick standing on Squidward, or when the fan walks into the commentator's room, when the mayor just picks up the snail to light the torch, and of course the running joke of mispronouncing Squidward's last name.
Or to basically win at ANYTHING!

"Party Pooper Pants" is a guilty pleasure episode for me. Seeing all of the Spongebob cast together was fun, I laughed at the Patchy segments, and had a blast with. But I do understand why others don't like it.

I think the joke is "Disabled people wear helmets to not injure themselves", implying that Patrick was trying to make SpongeBob look mentally disabled.
I'm pretty sure that he was just supposed to look stupid, though. The joke hasn't aged well.

The "GARY I THOUGHT WHAT WE HAD WAS SPECIAL" scene always makes me laugh
Even though not all classic episodes are perfect, they're still neat to watch, especially compared to most modern episodes.
Silver linings about some of the dishonorable mentions:
SpongeBob and Patrick laughing in boating school then getting separated was kinda relatable. The 24 joke is a classic and so is their wimpy fight. Aside from those details I agree.
Squilliam Returns has some classic jokes. SpongeBob’s brain and May I take your hat sir? The ending was a downer for sure because I wanted to see Squidward succeed after so much effort too. SpongeBob even sacrificed his Metal health.
Squeaky Boots isn’t at the top of my list, but I like it. It’s hilarious whenever Mr. Krabs has a guilty conscience and hilariously struggles to do the right thing. Unlike the soda drinking hat he wasn’t motivated by money.

If Dumped, Rock-a-Bye Little Bivalve, and I’m With Stupid never aired, it’s entirely possible that Patrick never becomes a jerk in later seasons.
I can almost understand if Squidward and the customers were like 10 or 11 years old when they were teasing Spongebob for getting kissed by his grandma. But they're ADULTS for Adonai's sake!
Even I’ll admit that as a kid, “I’m With Stupid” always rubbed me the wrong way, though I couldn’t articulate why.
The two great aspects about “SpongeBob” as an episodic series is how I can opt to watch some episodes on repeat more than others and the worst ones I’ve seen have bordered on WTF; as in, “what the hell am I watching” or “how did an episode like this come to fruition?”
SpongeBob is going to have his off-days like Mickey or Bugs and that’s okay. I’m at least glad to know he has a welcome presence in my life and he remains a part of my cartoon family.
Seeing SpongeBob in season 3 it seems he’d gotten over Patrick’s bullying.
The only parts of “The Great Snail Race” that I liked was misspelling Squidward’s name.

I can almost see where they were going with Grandma's Kisses, since I think the overall theme would resonate with older kids wanting to look cool for their friends and giving up their "childhood" status earlier than they would have. The beginning of the episode doesn't actually bother me. The ending is horrible though, it just always made me feel horribly stressed as a kid, because it reminded me that I would have to grow up and leave behind the warmth of being a kid... but then at the same time, you really did feel pathetic watching him have a temper tantrum to that degree, more than any other over the top "crying scene". In general, I just think the original 2002 movie did an infinitely better narrative about forcing yourself to grow up.
That and the growth spurt one are the only two I can say are unwatchable for me.

The blue fish in Grandma's Kisses is Charlie. Charlie's been mean to SpongeBob since, he even tries to make fun of SpongeBob in the episode The Nitwitting. Sometimes he doesn't do it. So... Charlie's not that mean, he barely makes a word. He's been a cameo.

Honestly, I don't think I could ever hate Party Pooper Pants. I agree Spongebob's control issues were annoying, but there just way too many jokes that still make me smile and laugh.

I always thought that this show went downhill at a 90 degree angle after the film. Turns out, nostalgia just kept me from seeing that the show always had flaws...
Every shows and movies have flaws, even Breaking Bad had one as well.
Hard disagree, Watch Survival Of The Idiots, Idiot Box, Band Geeks, Snowball Effect, Camping Episode, and so many more and tell me it’s just nostalgia, also the fact that these are the “worst” episodes of that era of Spongebob, proves how truly great that show was back in the day

It went full 180 after the fourth season lol. There are some really bad primetime spongebob episodes and some really good post-prime spongebob episodes, but people make the destinction for a good reason.

I can completely relate to Spongebob in the Party Pooper Pants episode. I have been in that position a lot when I plan parties with my friends . Another great list Josh!
You know something, Strider? I respect your opinion, and I do get the annoyance of the town teasing him, but to me, in context, that was the whole point. The town does not see the value of an adult male being kissed but your grandmother, because THEY find it to be immature, Spongebob tried to tell them that there is nothing wrong with that, but the town kept laughing even more. Especially when the kiss could not come off his forehead. Spongebob, due to his childish nature, has fallen into peer pressure by the town to become "Mature". For me, and a lot of people, "Grandma's Kisses", is essentially an exploration into to spongebob's childish nature. He's always been described as a child in an Adult's body, or vice versa. So having an episode where they talk about what it means to both be a child at heart and an adult in mind, is why this episode resonates with me. Even years later, it still resonates with me.
Patrick's "And then you get behind her and I'll push" line, as though they are gonna commit a kidnapping crime Is hysterical, to his "Have I ever not been right?" to "Freeform Jazz" to Patrick surrending his plan to eat cookies is hysterical, and it is totally within his character to do so, especially when spongebob got mad at him. The crunching that spongebob does when eating steam coral has me in stiches. The scene where spongebob breaks down and wants to be a kid makes perfect sense because he feels as though adult life isn't all that's cracked up to be despite him being an adult himself. It shows that he does not want to pretend being something that he is not, and he feels as though earning his Grandmother's love means acting immature. Children are immature and that IS a side that Spongebob has, believe it or not. Plus, the many gags that Spongebob does when crying, to an actual kitchen sponge, to a water fountain to a lawn sprinkler, is Freaking hilarious, and you can see why the town would be laughing at it as well. Hey, it's a cartoon. What can I say? It was still in good fun. That is why, even when I was a kid, I knew the lesson, I knew that the lesson that the Grandmother told Spongebob was definitely was warranted, and I still laughed with the town in the end, because it was Ironic that they did see what spongebob was up to in the house. Is it mean spirited, sure and they are still in the wrong for doing that, but at the same time, you can't help but laugh at the way spongebob was crying, because it was just so damn funny! Point being, I still respect your opinion, but I will always defend Grandma's Kisses, it is a treasured classic!

Grandma's kisses is actually probably my favorite episode of season 2. Also if we are being completely technical from spongebob's driver license we find out he is 13 years old at the start of the series.

I still haven’t forgotten how mean spirited “I’m with the Stupid”,“Dumped”, and “Grandmas Kisses” were when they first aired.
Some of these episodes still have their gems. Like SpongeBob's Grandma's moral and Patrick's commentary on Jazz.
I found some of these episodes sad rather, and I like it when an episode makes me cry in a strange way.
I like how he says that they clearly don’t understand the physical limitations of water and then says throw it in the fire like nobody questions the fire underwater

I honestly love I’m With Stupid. Mainly because of how funny SpongeBobs reactions and him acting stupid, and then trying to convince his fake parents that he’s not dumb. The thing I don’t like about the episode is the terrible ending

Yeah no. The scenes with Spongebob trying to convince the fake parents he's smart was just aggravating to watch.
Krusty Love. It's when Mr. Krabs falls in love with Mrs. Puff and he makes SpongeBob exhausted by buying her stuff she doesn't even want. My favorite part in that episode is that dirty joke and secret message when SpongeBob censored himself to stand up to Mr. Krabs.

Grandma’s Kisses was my least favorite, because of the cruel mockery he got from his peers.
Like Jem Reviews said, at least one of SpongeBob’s grandmothers in this episode was being grandmotherly kind-spirited.
And that’s giving it credit where credit is due.
Fun fact: when I was younger, I dreamed that Spongebob would tell his grandma about everyone mocking him for loving her, and then she'd reveal that she was a veteran and chase them off so that he wouldn't suffer through this again.

Oh god Grandma's Kisses is easily one of the WORST of the Classic Spongebob era....It just...yeah felt so needlessly cruel.
And funny now, that we live in a time where we crave that inner child, that nostalgic time....For the whole town to still make fun of Sponge at the end just felt like "oh okay....ouch." and I feel like that episode would've been better if it had ended right when Sponge and his grandma hug. It would've left a bigger impact, and taught a better lesson to kids-to cherish the time you have with your relatives, especially grandparents cause you never know when the next time you see them is the last.
Pretty much, them just stalking spongebob to laugh about him is just an unnessesary gutpunch.
LPFan even at a young age, i imagined as soon as the episode ended, his grandma came out with a shotgun and started firing to scare them away.

Not gonna lie, i dont dislike any of these episodes, Grandma’s kisses comes the closest but even thats more just its slow (and has an admittedly cringy ending) im guessing the 10-15 minute runtime helps though. I think its fun seeing Spongebob break character every now and then it shows he has flaws and establishes him as a better character , i much rather it over the “happy to the point of annoyance” he emits now

Party Pooper Pants actually taught me to loosen up. I rewatched it recently and realized how controlling I can be over my friends.

Oh man I haven’t thought about these episodes in forever. Each and every episode on this list makes me feel so nostalgic, even more so than the best classic episodes, just because those are talked about all the time, and these are rarely talked about.
