    This video just showed up randomly on my feed, and after seeing it I have instantly installed your custom cursor. I've been using it for over 9 months now and it has greatly enhanced my Windows experience. The rainbow hourglass is a piece of art and so much better than the blue spinning circle! The window arrows and the cursor itself are so clear and it makes everything easier; even the text select line is helpful for hundreds of pages I have written in this past period. It was absolutely a life changing decision to shift to your custom cursor!

    Might be worth mentioning the fact that Apple started making their cursor change scale as you use it, specifically it gets bigger when you shake it around quickly. This makes it easier to identify where the cursor is in case you forget where you left it.

    The tilted arrow makes perfect sense to me - most interface elements and characters are vertical-horizontal in nature, so having the pointer at an angle makes it stand out more. I've lost the "I beam" text cursor so many times in word processors over the years, when the tilted arrow would be readily obvious.

    The angle of the tilt is something I noticed being super important whenever a game had a default cursor that was even slightly off
    It was always so difficult to get used to, especially when at this point your spatial awareness ability of even using the cursor is so deeply ingrained from years of using one, that you definitely have to be new to computing to get used to any other way of drawing your eye and spatial intent to that point
    The straight upwards pointing arrow is always the worst for me, but being even slightly off on the standard angle weirds me out

    I remember the Amiga computers from the 80's & 90's as having a cursor editor built in. It gave you a box of a certain size that you could draw in whatever you like, was fun to create a variety of different ones, paper planes, dog bones, piston/con-rod, whatever, imagination was the limit. Also Amigas had the best ever waiting icon, it was 2 different sized meshed gears in rotation, was the coolest !, never seen it since, but then the Amiga was the coolest computer ever, you would spend way more time creating things, than messing with the O/S like you have to now.

    So after using this for a couple of days, here's my general experience with it: overall, I love it. I agree with one complaint I read below, as well as an additional complaint I have: the beam is a bit too large which obscures text when selecting it. My additional complaint is the move tool, similar to the beam, obscures too much. I often have to move small points in my software, and the software uses the move cursor to indicate the point can be moved. Once I hover my mouse over the point, the large move circle completely obstructs the point I am trying to move.

    1:30 I know why, it's to keep the point of the arrow at (0,0), also known as the "origin point" of the "object" in programming terms. It makes programming for and using the mouse, infinitely more intuitive. Amusingly, it'd take Microsoft and Unix years to catch onto WHY both Xerox and the MOAD used the arrow style cursor object, with Microsoft sticking to line cursors or 2x2 pixel dots until Windows 1.0, neither of which was exactly intuitive for the end user.

      Yeah that's certainly how I feel about it. It seems natural to want the tip to point to 0,0. Going deeper, it probably points to the top left corner because English reads from left to right, top to bottom, which is likely why screen co-ordinates are arranged as they are to begin with. You can speculate about why it's better to have a perfect vertical line on the left edge of the arrow head and diagonal on the right, rather than a perfect horizontal on the right edge and diagonal on the left. But it's probably something to do with English type again; vertical-oriented cursor feels better than horizontal.

    With the tilt angle of the arrow, it ensures that the "tip" is always at the same point (0,0) on the pointer icon. Scaling the icon doesn't effect the position of the tip. (Unfortunately, I don't know if this was the original reasoning behind it or not)

    • @Luxalpa
      @Luxalpa ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Also makes it much easier to line things up. The same reason why Microsoft went with the white cursor and the black outline. You see it a bit in the video, but when you move over a white surface, the outline seems to disappear, which makes it very difficult to click (and especially select) pixel perfectly (of course you rarely need to do that, but it still reduces accuracy a bit).

    • @NeinStein
      @NeinStein ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That might have been the technical reason at some point, though I doubt scaling was of great concern in the pre-mobile age.
      Any way, at least starting at some later point, you can define the "tip" point of the cursor in Windows. Which is not at (0,0) for the move icon or the hand for example.

    I love that modern cursors are flat on their left side. It allows them to hug the left side of the screen. And the very tip just touches the top, keeping the cursor within view as it slides across the top of the screen. Although the cursor does become hidden as it slides across the bottom and left sides of the screen... Meh, the only way to get around that would be to have a cursor that flips horizontally and vertically, depending on what quadrant of the screen it is in. THAT would be interesting.

    Fun tip: These cursors DO still work in Windows 11, and you can use the cursor Size option to scale them (uglier, but does work).
    Set the scale first, then apply the scheme in the old control panel. 👍

      Agreed, add Amiga workbench to the list! I also created my own cursor on that platform. I also liked the gold and silver shaded cursors in the windows plus package, I think it was included as standard in later windows versions.

      I would presume that the GNOME/ X11 cursor is an evolution of a design from NeXT Step or BeOS due to both having been UNIX operating systems from around the same time that the GNOME Foundation started for GTK development but I don't know anything about the KDE cursor design though but it is certainly unique among system default cursor designs but judging from old screenshots, it looks like KDE 1.0 used a different design to the current one along with KDE (couldn't find screenshots with the mouse cursor for KDE 2.0 and 3.0 and KDE 4 uses the same cursor design in the Oxygen theme as the current cursor in the Breeze theme I think...)

      @@wclifton968gameplaystutorials I doubt that since X11 dates from June 1984, while "The first full release, NeXTSTEP 1.0, shipped on September 18, 1989." BeOS is even more unlikely since it dates from October 1995.

    I’m taking a break from studying for finals and I really appreciate your work Mr. Posy. I hope you have a nice day.

    That brings back memories :)
    Some 30 years ago, in OS/2 it was easy to make your own mouse cursor. It was all built-in - just copy the default cursor set and edit it like you'd edit icons.
    Back then I made a few mouse cursors based on flowers, with the petals changing colours based on the cursor state. Good times. :)

    I actually think that the macOS cursor is drawn as a vector in realtime in the newer versions of the OS, as by moving the mouse cursor back and forth it'll increase the size of the cursor but without blowing up pixels and retaining the same design.
    You can also change the color of the cursor on macOS (however you want) in its accessibility menus.

    I much like the mouse cursors on Linux, I use Adwaita cursor. It's default look is a black mouse cursor set, easy to see on light and dark backgrounds, the arrow head is slightly bigger with shorter tail, although would probably look better without the arrow tail.
