Nice review. As a DM for B/X, AD&D and 5E, I can say that since we switched to Shadowdark over a year ago, this is by far my favorite system to run. Easy to teach, runs fast, intense combat and the lite rules let you focus on the story without all the mechanics getting in the way. Works great for long campaigns, IMHO but everyone's milage may vary.
I found the game to be flexible enough to still be used for the kind of campaign that isn't constantly inside of a dungeon. You might think that the light mechanic is an integral pillar, but it's merely just one aspect of the game that doesn't need to be put to use every single moment of a session. Between the lower level cap, and the deadliness I also find players will run into fatigue for their own characters far less often. How many times have we seen someone talk about having a new idea for a character, but they're "stuck" playing their current one?
hey I'm confused is there a one-way solution to 5e gaming rules.
