Been playing cnc for 10 years. I’ve loved every minute of it. As a service member, I can attest, they are generous to their fellow brothers (and sisters) in arms. I would contradict you in 1 point. Converting adventures from one system to cnc. I have had no issues converting adventures regardless of system. You may have to spend a few extra minutes at the planning table, but converting an adventure from any system (or edition) is quite simple.

Simply the best D&D clone on the market. Well in my opinion just much better than that 5th edition Magic the Gathering clone that Hasbro produce. The game mechanic works well and it doesn't take two hours to write a character or need to you pay a web page to keep the PCs up to date. It's very clear and very playable.

I've used C&C for Greyhawk & Forgotten Realms 1e as well as Scared Lands from 3e. Both worked out really well. It's been my favorite 'version of D&D' for a long time.

I believe the Troll's plan is to keep the beautiful covers in the next print run of the books. They are just removing some of the OGL references.

I like them but I hope they do some alternate covers in the style of the 7th and 8th printing as they were also very good and more C&C as opposed to AD&D.

Castles & Crusades is a great game by a great company. There is a reason Gygax called it the natural successor to AD&D. I have been running a C&C campaign for about a year and a half and C&C makes me feel like I am actually playing D&D again. FYI, those tribute covers are here to stay and there are more coming.

The game is good, and the Siege Engine is fast at the table.
I do wish EVERY character class had choices to make that would reflect their core attributes, and that editing sometimes makes High Gygaxian look clear and concise.
I also wish the Monsters and Treasures book would be updated to the newer design language, because it’s so much easier to read than the fake parchment look.

  • @billn5866

C&C is wonderful! Old school vibe w/o being shackled to old, busted rules for the sake of nostalgia. Siege engine is solid and easy to use.

C&C is wonderful, but I do not think anyone is "shackled" to old school rules, especially from nostalgia, given that about 75% of old school gamers I play with are under 25!;)

Getting ready to start my first C&C campaign. I’m going to run Goodman Games’ Saga of the Dragon Cult, which was an AP for 3.5, but it doesn’t look hard to convert and their adventures are top notch. Gotta do something with all these DCC modules for 3.5.

I always say C&C is my OSR system. The reason why is you can use any OSR adventure using C&C, you may change the AC and exp for Monsters but that is not bad when you can almost use the adventure as is.

    100% agree
I've been running a C&C campaign for four years now and it has become my go to FTTRPG
The rules are solid but flexible, they bend but they don't break and they are as straight forward a set of level based fantasy gaming rules as you are ever likely to see
Less fiddly than PF 3rd 4th or 5th edition
My only caveat is that occasionally some rules clarifications are not located with the rules in question and there's a lot of fluff, charming leftovers in the early games it seeks to take inspiration from I'm sure but less so from the point of view of a modern gamer
Properly edited with an eye on clarity (something to be fair the book actually managed with it's spell lists.VERY easy to flick through) could reduce the page count of the player's book by a quarter and remove the confusion a system that simple shouldn't have but does because of how the rules are presented, and IMHO you would have THE PERFECT FTTRPG 🤘

Hi! One remark on the game/PHB: I own the 2004 print of 8010 (PHB) and I don't know exactly/i'm not sure, yet this old print has the classes run only up to level 12, while the later prints like the 1e-hommage-cover 8th/9th print include higher levels...

Great review. I've been evaluating OSR systems (I did play D&D in 1991 and AD&D 1e/2e), but they feel a bit too primitive in some cases with too many negative play experiences (not a fan of super high lethality, but 5e is too far in the other direction). C&C looks like a solid mix between the old and the new, almost like 3.x if it was an evolution of AD&D not a complete revamp.
