- Hard to Kill is Steven Seagal's follow up to Above the Law and they really should've just made it a sequel to Above the Law. He plays the same exact character...Steven Seagal. But we do get to see Steven Seagal running and that's always a crowd pleaser.

The Oscar talk is obviously Steven Segal's unrequited love letter to Billy Crystal. All of his training in Aikido, firearms, and even is running style were all to get Billy Crystal's attention.
When these odes came back unrequited, Steven Segal went into a downward spiral. He did Saturday Night Live, Under Siege Two, and then gained 250 pounds and moved to Eastern Europe.
There is literally no other plausible explanation.

I think making fun of an 80s film like this is low hanging fruit.. It would be far more original to take this film seriously and put it into context with Seagals other work.. You make one good point, that he typecast and basically coming from the set of Above The Law.. But you could have expanded on this in a serious way, that there is in-fact a "Seagal genre" of sorts.
