Before body doubles and voice Dubbing
Above the law is ABSOLUTELY AWESOME and STUNNINGLY AMAZING
Steven Seagal is action movie legend of all time
Your comments are great! Absolutely love "Glazed Ham with Painted on Hair" haha. that is perfect
I loved this movie he was such a badass in this movie. His first movie was the best, I liked Out For Justice and Marked for Death. From then on, there was a steep decline to the dreck he puts out now.

"Before Steven seagal became a Glazed ham with painted on hair and goatee"
Thanks for that bit of comedy gold!
All joking aside. It's not saying much but this role was actually Seagals best acting ever and it was his first movie.
Haha his first, his best, his "Never Again" he came on to the scene with such an ego and just never let it go.
@@RedEyeReviews His first four were all pretty good action flicks. Before he started fighting environmental issues and global warming, and cooking in the Navy with a non-regulation (even for a sailor) haircut.
@@williamsmith8790 oh yeah 🤣 I was just in awe because I was a kid at the time, & was one of my dad's favourite action flicks... little did I realise it was to laugh & pick it apart, as he was an Army 'Fitter & Turner' 🤣
@@RedEyeReviews.... All of you Steven Seagal haters really make me laugh. But regardless of what you haters think of him, he is a legit Martial Artist (yes, Aikido IS in fact a Martial Art whether you like it or not).... and I always thought his acting was ok. Not great, just ok. If you can't stand Seagal's acting then you shouldn't be able to stand Van Damme's acting either.
Got to agree the guys ego is massive and I really don’t know why because surely he must know that the whole world thinks he’s basically the punchline of a joke now but I’ll tell you what if he can convince his “ best buddy “ Putin to see sense then all is forgiven and I will gladly vouch for everything he said even the really mad stuff it all happened Steven
It's just so weird seeing a "young", skinny and kinda energetic Seagal and actually seeing do some stunts. Man, I love your reviews, even if this one could be an ASMR with that soft spoken voice.
Despite his awkward acting ability and a run that makes him look like an incontinent penguin, Seagal displays an alarming amount of technical prowess in this movie. He exercises trigger discipline, he does brass checks on weapons he picks up. There is this strange mixture of confident expertise combined with blithering emotional ineptitude.
He executes technical prowess because he had had plenty of experience doing this type of stuff well prior to 1988.
My mom says he runs like he has a stick up his ass lol
@@djcease1996 He what?
@@djcease1996 he executes basics tbf... 🤷♂️
Dude follows PROTO
I like how Seagal’s hair has grown back over the years. Must be all that sitting around, eating, sweating, and touching women, he has done since the 90’s. Bloating leads to new thick hair!
The goatee is really just how Seagal keeps an emergency donut handy at all times.
Forgot Sharon Stone was in this. She did well to escape the shadow of Seagal.
Seagal is incredible. Both a comic masterpiece, and a terrifying enigma.
Haha agreed. I am very excited to explore his entite filmography and just see the absurdity fall of the rails
@@RedEyeReviews There was a great interview recently with Killer Mike and El-P talking about him for some reason. It was hilarious. EL-P once wrote a fan fiction spin-off about the character "Sticks" haha
Haha i will have to check that out!
Well said!
"Steven Seagal is ....... *Above The Law(sagna)* and *Out For Just (another all-you-can-eat buffet)* 😄🤣😄🤣
I started watching your channel last month. The Lawman videos were the first i watched, I'm glad I finally found episode one of the Steven Saga. Also, my wife loves your Seagal voice. Keep up the good work.
Thank you so much for this! I tried to comment earlier and youtube wouldn't let me. But this is so cool and I'm very glad you and your wife like my silly voice lol
This movie is so weird because it's kinna good and talks about the CIA-drug connections that are quite real. It also introduces everything that would become parody in later Seagal movies. Seagal's competence with firearms becomes him wearing increasingly elaborate tactical gear at the drop of a hat, the high-energy aikido moves become the waddling slowness of his later years (combined with generally awful stunt double work,) the political message subplot expands to dominate the movies in a heavy-handed, absurdist fashion, and the way his never-good acting descended into a whispering, mumbling mess. Fascinating.
I could even visualize a universe where Seagal wasn't consumed by ego and committed himself to the craft of acting where this movie was the start of a long, interesting career. Which happened, though not in the way most people would *want* it to happen.
not to mention, in his youthful, leaner days, that super laughable and bizarre way he walks and runs. Stilted as heck and way off key haha
even trotting down a small set of porch steps is messed up with him
Ok Stud, can you ACT better and fight better than Segal? Most likely NOT.
@@HighSpeedNoDrag can you ? Who are you to say that Seagal is not bad if you yourself have no clue about acting? It takes as much ability to be able to say someone is good as it does to say some one sucks.
@@agnidas5816 The questions was not directed @ you. How do you know I myself have not acted? I had a small part as the father in Mary Poppins in 6th grade for one.
Don't forget his amazing blues playing and more important his singing in an unknown language. And don't forget to list all his nationalities that changed along his career. All the buffets that came Under Siege, no hotdog stand was Hard to Kill, he was Driven to Kill doughnut shops inventory, Belly of the Beast was documentary by his dietitian, the list is limitless.
And the head of Meal Team Six
nice
Holy shit, Seagal was actually fit and shape!??
I apologise but I have to correct something here. He didn't just run an aikido dojo. He was the first foreigner to run an aikido dojo in Japan, in a time when the xenophobia was rather extreme. Much as he has become an utter laughing stock, the fact he managed to do that is impressive as hell and before he let himself go, he was disciplined and competent. It's a shame really that he has chosen the path he has.
Oo I didn't know that. Thank you for correcting the fact :) I do agree that his earlier career was genuinely impressive. And he was a real badass for awhile.
Wasn't that because he married the daughter of the dojo owner?
@@RedEyeReviews The dojo was actually his father-in-law's, but Seagal did run it.
Yeah he didn’t run a dojo it was his wife’s family’s dojo ran by her father but he did teach regular classes in it, there’s so many stories that all contradict one another like he said he learned under the founder of akido but guy was dead for at least 3 years before our man SS even set foot on Japanese soil so that one’s an obvious lie but personally I think his whole life story is basically a loose interpretation of what actually happened seen through the lens by his own narcissism to the point he probably believes most of it now, plus he seems like an asshole
Nope, he wasn't, due to the stationing of many American troops post WW2 there is a huge long list of Instructors in that particular style in Japan. They didn't all have to marry the dojo owners daughter either 🤣
Ahh, my dad really liked this movie and so did I. Seagal put a lot of effort into this, doing his stunts and having his nose broken, which I didn't know until now.
That's hardcore. He could have done more of this. Yeah, you eventually get to the stage where you are not 25 anymore, but he really stopped early with his stunts.
He was 33 in this movie though, 32 in his first movie ever lol. The time he was not 25 anymore was about 7 years before he ever got famous haha.
Ps. Before any hate, I'm 31...............
But if I look anything like Seagal in this movie in another 2 years I'm gonna cry lol
@@FlawlessRevelation If you're in Hollywood, you can delay it longer due to personal trainers, nutritionists, chefs and certain substances.
Seeing this in the middle of binge watching your reviews highlights what a difference there was in him near his peak verses the now majority of his film roles there is.
Possibly his “finest” work. Pre Golden Corral bod. Sans the running scene, and his accent, everything else in this is top notch. The fight scenes, the gun handling, the sword work. All excellently choreographed.
"So he searches for him at the restaurant....he's not at the restaurant" This line makes me crack up every time
"then he realises its just murder at this point, so runs away" 😂😂😂
Very funny line: he realizes this is straight murder at this point and runs away.
Lol and the @8:49 scene I straight laughed my ass off
The office space edit was perfect
One week from retirement and survived, I didn’t expect that.
Right?!
Thank you personally for making this. And the "yo, what it be like homie" was one of my favorite things from Seagal movies literally ever.
Haha of course!
This was a great movie. Some of the best Aiki type street moves ever filmed. As well as some hard core Aikido training footage. If you're a hater it's cause your jealous.
More like amazed at first, because no one saw this before. But when you realize later most of the bad guys in the movies launching at a straight line at him.
@KTV 4U The street Aik in above the law stands the test of time as well as how the action was filmed so you could actually see what was going on. When the camera moves changed and you could no longer see from the super tight shots and jumpy camera and quick edits. I quit watching.
7:02 to 7:10, not really murder. They opened fire on him, it was deliberate, they ambushed him, he was out numbered and threatened. He told him not to move and he tried to challenge his warning, he was menacing. Once that line is crossed it remains self-defense UNTIL they surrender.
Redeye Review has followed Seagal in the descent into madness: as each successive movie becomes more unhinged, so too has each successive review in some sort of symbiotic relationship. Kudos - RedEye Reviews has sacrificed their sanity for our entertainment!
Aww thank you friend. And it all started here
@@RedEyeReviews given you've watched a good chunk of utter dross, can you pinpoint the exact moment in the exact film when The Seagull thought 'F@£k it' and the rest of his career just became a 'bargain bin dvd at the motorway services you buy for the nephew you don't like at all' train wreck?
This channel is a goldmine of comedy. I sit here and howl with laughter because I loved these movies growing up, but the writing and timing of your jabs is incredible. They’re still fun movies, but it’s god damn hilarious how you produce these
Thank you so much! It's been a blast making them.
So I was actually blown away at a number of things in this movie from a tactical perspective. In the first shootout Steven's pistol handling was actually very advanced especially for an 80's movie. When he reloads you can see the proficiency. Bringing the pistol up into his eye line, seating the mag fully, etc. Also in the Vietnam scene he keeps his finger off the trigger and carries the carbine in a relaxed high ready carry. Not common in these movies or even now adays! Also throughout the movie he does things like "press checks" checking to ensure a round is chambered. Particularly in the scene when he gets the duffel bag of guns from the basement. Overall I was very surprised as litterally no action movie actor in the 80's or 90's shows nearly the firearm competence that Steven displayed in this film. I am starting to think there is more to this guy than meets the public eye.
As far as I know, he was a legit military man and his aikido is legit as well. But somewhere along the road he lost his mind and went nuts, maybe just for our entertainment?
@@butcherben82 he just got cocky, his ego blew up
@@butcherben82 Then what you know is wrong, and you should feel bad about being incompetent and stupid.
He was just a stuntman that knew how to do things because it was his job. When he became a star he didn't care about that anymore because it's not his job... Watch him handle guns now 😚 he rests the butt of the rifle on TOP of his shoulder.
Yeah look at movies like Sniper Spec ops he did recently and let me know what his gun handling skills are in that one lol.
started watching your channel about two weeks ago. i have officially watched every Seagal entry. now i have to hit the rest... you bastard... happy new year
Haha so glad you found the Channel!
I can't help but think of MadTV and Will Sasso when Steven Seagal is brought up.
"Hi, I'm Steven Seagal. I'm an American. To me nothing means America more than America, and Americans. So I decided to take a trip into the small towns of America, to see what being American means to other Americans. To see the little things that make America, America". LMAO!!!
A movie with Pam Grier can't be that bad...
This was Seagals career peak.
Lol peaked at his first movie
What about Under Siege?
This was a good movie. Under Siege and Hard to Kill are awesome. Other than that....big steaming pile.
Loving these reviews! I grew up wacthing JCVD,Segal and Norris. Keep up the awsomeness
Thank you so much!!
Most of the precinct cops, background characters, henchmen and even the main antagonist Henry Silva(playing a different character) were in Chuck Norris film , Code of Silence. When this film was in theaters during its original run I thought it was a sequel film follow up lol. I assumed Henry Silva was the twin brother of the character he portrayed in the Norris film. The years before internet spoilers was truly an exciting period. Every film was a surprise because film trailers did not give away the entire plot.
Steven Seagal is the embodiment of the idea that "it's easier to teach good actors to be good martial artists than teach good martial artists to be good actors"
It's easier to send miners into space and train them to be astronauts than the other way round 🙂
Above The Law was a good one and Pam Grier looked awesome but what's been consistent about Seagal ( beside the bad movies later in his career ) is that throw at :30 always makes me laugh
Good news. Steven Seagal has two new films in pre-production, "Above The Law 2" and "Tip Of The Spear". I can't wait for your take on what I'm sure will be cinematic masterpieces. That is, if masterpieces were made with duct tape and Aunt Jemima Syrup.
He's a family favorite. I'll always have a soft spot for him, even though he's crazy. (Love your review, RedEye, subscribing).
The plot to this film was so deep and genuinely thought out unlike 95% of action movies. It lends credit to the fact Seagal may have had former ties to the CIA and that this film is loosely based on his own life.
Thanks for the comment! I actually think this movie is good as well. He still worked hard at his movies back than
Was Seagal CIA? Depends on who you believe. If he did covert work he should not be running his mouth about it. Many people have said Seagal is a compulsive liar.
nypost.com/2003/08/05/cia-guy-aims-at-seagal/
The film is decent.
@@adrianchannelle8651 He's a fascinating character though, because as much as he exaggerates, he also really has had a very interesting journey in life. He really did spend 16 plus years in Japan... he really does speak fluent Japanese (with an ex-wife and son there), he really has gone to teach seminars to police units and paramilitary in Eastern Europe since at least the 1990s, he really did have ties with the Mob, from his links with Julius Nasso and the Gambinos. And of course, his newer bizarre close relationship with Vlad Putin.
@@AztecUnshaven Sometimes I wonder how much of the buffoon type act that we see is legitimate, and how much is just a cover story designed decades ago to make him seem like the least believable asset in forever, thereby providing the best cover possible.

Best review ever! And the best movie of Seagirl's career.
I was hesitant to click on this video after enjoying so many of your reviews. I didn't want one of my favorite martial arts movies to be mocked (too harshly). Frankly, it's Steven Seagal's best movie and, perhaps, his only good one. Watching the clips, you see what he was before the beret, the Native American buckskins, and that silk Chinese jacket he still wears. It's good to see him with a natural hairline, too.
This was an amazing movie to see as a kid in the theater. Hearing Henry Silva say "Who the f- is this cherry" made my moustache start to grow. Watching Steven Seagal break that elbow was almost as good as seeing the Death Star blow up (the first time). You see the many things that powerful men do to powerful men. Your review gave its due, and you clipped most of my favorite scenes. The retrospective needs to begin with this movie, not just because it was Steven Seagal's first, but to see how far his ego has taken him adrift.
This is my all time favorite role from Seagal... mainly because since it's his first movie he hadn't type cast himself as an overweight belligerent fighting couch yet... and this movie was super violent for it's time period... plus I've had a lifelong crush on Pam Grier (not her prettiest presentation but the woman is gorgeous)... ALSO BEST THING ABOUT THIS MOVIE... STEPHEN SEAGAL RUNS LIKE A GIRL... AND FROM OTHER INTERVIEWS, THAT IS HIS REAL RUN... also FUN FACT, being from an impovershed area down south, I can tell you that most sisters loved this man back then... I'm sure putting Pam in the movie influenced a lot of that... Many of his DVD sales to this very day come from old black women...
Just finished watching this movie. When I saw the torture scene I was like damn that actually looks like they just beat the shit out of Steven. Like I could tell it was real. So when you said he did have his nose broken I was like wow that came full circle. Also as an introspective thing I've been around enough violence that I could sense when it was actually real was cool to know I still got it.
Great first movie. Gritty Chicago rawness. Awesome slo-mo smash through window. Cop in bedroom seemingly calling Steven by his real name. Foxy Brown by his side. Camera blatantly visible in car’s side mirror. Only 80’s Seagal movie we’ll ever get.
I genuinely love this movie. It paved the way to some very ridiculous movies. But his career started pretty great actually.
Saw this in theatres, skipped class. Loved it. “…..You ain’t above mine” epic
I just have to agree with your closing comments. I watched this movie in a theatre a week after its release and thought Steven displayed a formidable ability with a Ju-jitsu form. I was at the time studying and training in Aikido which seemed to be missing something, this appeared to be it. These days I see him as having turned into just another fake.
i have seen a bunch of your reviews of the Seagal movies where's he's like in his 60's and am now going down the playlist. it's weird to see a movie where he just runs without having a stunt-double do it for him
Right?!
I loved this movie he was such a badass in this movie. His first movie was the best, I liked Out For Justice and Marked for Death. From then on, there was a steep decline to the dreck he puts out now.
He was the coolest thing around when I was a kid.
I am going so hard on this channel now. I already know you branched out from Segal films. Although there's way too many Steven Segal films. But love the comedic banter in the analysis. It gets me hard for 80s action films.
That was a great movie review from you. This is currently my second favorite movie of all time. I also greatly enjoyed watching numerous actors from this movie reunite in both The Package and The Fugitive which were both also directed by Andrew Davis.
Thank you very much! I also enjoy the Fugitive alot
Really happy I stumbled upon your channel and I love the reviews! That said, you’re a loose cannon and I’m going to need your badge and gun on my desk.
Hahaha thank you friend :)
When I was a kid I had to open the garage for my mom to get in and lost the final seconds of how he escaped the torture. Never bothered to find it for 30 years straight. I'm glad, I know how he did it, now? Thanks I guess.
9:32 this is a very underrated joke 😂
:D glad you like it
One of your reviews popped up i clicked on your channel and first thing i saw was all these segal classics, great review
Haha. Thank you friend
There's a reason he walks and runs the way he does. It's a balance thing. To be able to stop in a moment because of weight distribution.
It's like a cheetahs tail
The scene where he walks into the store and starts torturing people for infomation is like how any other movie would introduce its VILLAN
That arm break looked so real
The way he's running is just absolutely hilarious. Arms paddling, wrists flailing... So badass! :D
Great gun safety lol the 1911 in the duffel bad was already locked and cocked right out the bag.
How very excellent to see Mister Seagal when he had a soul. I mean, wow. This is a good movie. I prefer Falling Down but this is not bad.
A lot of people forget or don't know that in the beginning Steven Seagal was a legit badass in his early days.
I will not knock this movie, I was introduced to a new style of brutal martial arts I have never seen in the movies before. the movie was fast paced and to the point. I enjoyed the hell out of this movie.
Im loving this series, very underrated channel…. I’ll be on the lookout for the Bruce Willis series next
Thank you so much! Bruce will come very soon
I decided to start this journey in the beginning and you're so subdued but still funny and entertaining and those fun facts about the movie is always fun.
this is his best movie, in my opinion. Those clips at the beginning were brutal lol
Aikido and karate are two COMPLETELY different Japanese martial arts families. Karate is not the umbrella name for Japanese martial arts; it's a family of Chinese / Okinawan / Japanese striking and kicking based arts. So, the school wasn't an Aikido Karate school; it was an Aikido school.
Ooooo that makes sense. Thank you for the correction. I am really ignorant when it comes to the world of martial arts. I grew up doing Karate and my brain now calls all fighting Karate lol
Thanks for the clarification! :)
@@RedEyeReviews no problem. It's a common mistake to make. I've been interested in martial arts for several decades, and have practiced quite a few of them :)
Btw, I love your reviews :)
@@RedEyeReviews just to add a little bit more detail, Aikido was developed primarily from a style of jujitsu, called Daito Ryu Aiki-jujutsu or simply Daito Ryu Jujitsu. But, there are other influences, such as kenjitsu sword-fighting.
this video kickstarted the Seagalverse
one of the things i love about this movie, and it's funny as f, is if you ever lived in the wicker park neighborhood of chicago, you can tell exactly where tons of scenes were filmed. and while the neighborhood has significantly improved, back in the 80's, it was a bad, bad place. so the baseball fight is at the funny 3-point alley at evergreen and ellen, then the chase happens by the streets around wicker park, then the punch to the chest happens right by hollywood cleaners under the el tracks at milwaukee and evergreen. tons of shots of driving around the bad hood (wicker park) are also in the film.
i love these reviews 🤣🤣🤣🤣great work love the seagal voice

I saw this movie when it came out. I don't remember any of it, except that arm brake at the end. It was the brake that was heard around the world. I couldn't wait for his next movie.
Who fell apart more horrifyingly: Seagal or Brando?
There was a pretty good youtuber who made a video about Steven Seagal rise and fall why his "fans" still fascinated by him in the past and now. The movie Above the law was Steven best movie because of director Andrew Davis who keep on improving for each movie he make and make something new, while Steven only use his former past glory for all his movies like being Over Powered that it become a joke
So the guy who made Steve Seagal an action star in the 80s basically just did a real life version of She's All That?
LOL
Exactly! He had a formula and was like "screw it let's see if it works on that dude over there with the ponytail"

Love the narrations man 👍👍😆😆😆😆😆
I love his early movies. They just do t make movies like this anymore.
Some solid one liners haha. “Empty this gun in your butt.” Haha, yo, did he actually break that dudes elbow?
Oh yeah. Seagal is a brilliant wordsmith haha.
He loves his gruesome limb breaks. he does them in literally every movie of his.
I was a kid and my best budy told me "you've got to see this guy, he breaks bones". And so I went to see this movie; not bad, but I always found boring the lack of opposition in his fights. Nobody could touch him not even the bosses. Really? Even Bruce Lee took some hits from Chuck Norris. And this guy has no muscles on top of that. So I did not watch more of his movies until years later another friend told me to watch Under Siegue "You've got to see this one; there is a really hot girl coming out from a giant cake flashing her tits"
This was an Andrew Davis movie a lot of his films are shot in Chicago with the same group of actors watch Code of Silence or The Fugitive for reference
