  • I’ve been studying Korean officially since 2005, but I wasn’t always fluent. In fact, even after becoming mostly fluent, I’ve still been improving every single year through constant studying. So I sat down with Hyunwoo from TTMIK to watch some older clips of me speaking Korean and share how I’ve improved over the years. Thanks to Hyunwoo for helping out!
    You can find Hyunwoo over at TTMIK (TalkToMeInKore...) and on TH-cam here: / talktomeinkorean

    I agree with 현우 선생님 about the noticeable improvement between videos ~2016 and 2018! This is a great motivation for learners who feel stuck at a certain level, and don’t feel like they are no longer improving. That ‘step up’ moment that happens one day after accumulated input… is visualized here! Plus, kudos to you for sharing all those past moments! Not everyone would be brave enough to do that! 👍

      @@wowJhil I just use whatever language is easier for whoever I'm with. It depends on the person. Many of my friends prefer using English for various reasons, and others I've never even heard them speak a word of English before.

      @@GoBillyKorean This has always fascinated me. When I first came to Korea (5 years ago), everyone spoke English to me, because my Korean was basically limited to "Hello/Goodbye and crudely introducing myself, lol), although I was always trying to speak Korean at my level, whatever that was at the time. I'm STILL sadly upper beginner, of course, but I feel like I'm finally starting to acquire some tiny aspects of intermediate level now - I can understand at almost an intermediate level some video dialogues that I listen to over and over again, but not much real conversation, because I can only hear that once, lol. But now I find that a lot of Korean people convert to Korean with me, intermittently, when they lack the English words. So we kind of sometimes speak a mixture of Korean and English - sometimes they know the English word we need and sometimes I know the Korean word we need. It feels kind of like a job promotion in some ways, and I assume that as my Korean gets better (my listening has specifically improved recently, thank goodness!!) I will get to converse more and more in Korean, I hope. 🙂 It feels kind of like an innate language negotiation thing that automatically happens between two people, and they end up using whichever language or mix works between them at any given time. Does that sound accurate?

    • @GoBillyKorean
      @GoBillyKorean  ปีที่แล้ว +12

      @@fransmith3255 Yes, the more Korean you learn the more people may want to switch to Korean with you when they don't know what to say. It can be more relaxing to some people if they know that you can already speak Korean, if they're not confident in their English. But also in general, once you can have full Korean conversations you'll simply meet people who don't want anything to do with English.

    Honestly the whole process of learning Korean is embarrassing. I’m so embarrassed speaking Korean and making mistakes. I freeze and forget everything I learn when I’m talking to someone. And then I’m afraid of sounding too American. Not only that but sometimes I want to use more intonation but I’m embarrassed to make a fool out of myself or maybe exaggerate it too much. Right now I’m probably not expert enough 😂

      I read a good tip the other day, of using the Speech function of Papago to practice talking. You basically would say what you want to say and Papago transcribes it back to you. If it transcribed it back correctly, you know your pronunciation is probably really good, if not...well just keep on practising ❤
      That way you can practice without fear of embarrassing yourself 😊

    • @sczezne
      @sczezne 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      because giyeok just like ㅈ, ㄷ and ㅂ change their sound depending on where they are. when they are at the beginning they are more soft. in the middle they are more tough.

      ㅂ, ㅈ, ㄷ, ㄱ are voiceless (like p, ch, t, k but without airpuffs) at the beginning of a word but voiced (like b, j, d, g) between vowels

      Hehe, I learned to sing the Korean National Anthem before I learned how to say Hello in Korean, lol! And I had to sing it at a public Korean war ceremony in front of many Korean people. Korean people were, as always, very gracious, but I think I was very bad at the pronunciation. A Korean person actually sang the Australian national anthem. She was lots better than me, lol - she could speak English. :-))

      Korean or any language for that matter, I remember back in the day being so obsessed with English that I listened to a song a lot of times just using the booklet that comes with a CD. Everytime I look back I realized that it's the same thing I'm doing with Korean (and Japanese, because of Twice) but since this time the script is different I rely on my ears because romanization makes it harder for me.

      So true. I can sing Goodbye by Park Hyo Shin in Korean and several BTS songs. I also can sing some Japanese songs. While I do have a very basic vocabulary of Korean words (hello, thank you, excuse me, my name is, and curse words etc..), do not try a conversation in either language with me.

    Hyunwoo always sounds to me like he immigrated to the US at about the age of eight and has lived here ever since-which is, of course, amazing because he’s never lived in the US for any length of time. As he himself points out, I can’t imagine how much better he could be-we’ll have to wait until he’s “50, 60 or 70” to see.

      @@charismarie6612 “That’s so specific😂but oddly accurate” Haha, yeah, seven or eight. Well, earlier than that and he probably wouldn’t have an accent at all; later than that (10, 11 or 12) and he could still speak almost “natively” but possibly (probably but not necessarily) with more of an accent.

    • @babygoo89
      @babygoo89 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are so right. I think that’s pretty much valid to any immigrants. To me, Hyun Woo’s accent sounds like someone who immigrated at the age of 8-9 and speaks Korean with parents at home. I find that normally one won’t have much accent if they immigrated before 8. The best is that he actually has never lived in America before. Some people are just born with language talent.

    I have been learning for nearly 4yrs now, and am nowhere near fluent. In fact, I feel very stuck, like I've hit a learning wall. I can't remember much of anything new...it's VERY frustrating. At best, I'd say I'm somewhere between beginner and intermediate level.
    I watch K-Dramas all the time, but I'm not learning much because I'm reading what I'm watching to know what's going on. I've tried listening to radio shows, but I can listen for hours and haven't a clue what's being talked about. Any suggestions?

    • @GoBillyKorean
      @GoBillyKorean  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It matters a lot *how* you're studying. Just watching TV shows won't help make you fluent unless you're doing a lot of studying alongside of that so your brain has something to compare it to. Other things you can try are increasing how much practice you're doing, by finding some online Korean friends to talk with.

  • @eundongpark1672
    @eundongpark1672 2 ปีที่แล้ว +19

    My favourite bit is 8:14 to 9:01.
    When I was on my path to becoming fluent in Spanish, there were a few big helpers that jumped my learning to the next level. The ability to navigate my speech *around* the gaps in my language knowledge (both vocab AND grammar) was one of the skills I found accelerated my fluency hugely. I could almost feel my brain changing as I learned to do it. I feel like it's a skill that I think we could start practicing from day 1...using our already-known languages to talk about a given topic without using certain words or grammar.
    I can hear that 현우 쌤 has improved now compared to his pronunciation in the early TTMIK podcasts. Back then he often pronounced words like he'd learned the vocab from a book, like saying closed as "close-ed", or pronouncing the vowel a in short-a form instead of long-a form.

    I love yall's videos together. Billy, you are seriously GOALS in every way !!! Thank you for walking us through your journey so far! As for 현우님, he is literally on the level of a native English speaker. Ion even know why he be playin like he ain't! I think as language learners or speakers of a language in general, there comes a point where refinement becomes the goal. I'm a native English speaker but I constantly seek ways to improve my oral and written abilities. That's just the nature of people who love languages, I suppose! Maybe there is a point where we could not get any better, but that point may be different for each one of us! Or maybe the limit does not exist! Who knows! But seeing people like yall inspires me to keep reaching for the stars.
    Anyways, as always you both are such huge inspirations to thousands of people like myself. Thanks for being here on this journey with us! Wishing you all and your loved ones the best!

      @@graciekattan6618 I'm not sure what kind of insult you ment that to be, but I deffinitely took it as one. You added nothing to the discussion, all you managed to do was make yourself look stupid. Good job.

    i have no idea how you became so fluent in korean and you can teach it. your the smartest amercian I know because its really hard for english speakers to learn korean. I know it was really hard for you to learn korean in the beggining and you were struggling but now look at you your such a pro. and you can even tell that google translate makes lots of mistakes i cant tell at all. If you have in person calsses i would obviously come to learn from you

      I don't think I'm any smarter than the average person. You don't have to be super smart to learn Korean. Anyone can learn it fluently with just time and practice :-)
