I'm a 65 y.o. retired grandfather using the KLEAR Integrated Korean college textbooks to self-tutorial myself. Half way thru the 3rd book and goal is to be conversational fluent by the time I get to go to Korea next summer. I'm under the impression that many Korean grandfathers study English as a retirement hobby. I would love to meet up with them for language exchange practice. What did I take away from this video? "Know more tomorrow than you did today!" One day at a time!

Very cool! The times I was in Korea, I found some of the old ahjummas really lovely and curious. But I also found people my age (mid 50s) to be kinda socially older than me, very grandmother-ish...but that may be artefact of the relatively small number of people I met in my age group. Maybe I just met the very traditional ones.

When Hyunwoo said he had a "10 yr hiatus from German and now he's back learning it again", my heart leapt with joy with the realization that I'll be ok with Korean. For the last 7 yrs I've been struggling with grief from the death of my husband and dogs from illness, and I was unable to fully do the things I wanted. In the beginning of that dark time, learning Korean was a way to lift myself out of the grief as much as I could. But for the last two years or so, I haven't been studying Korean as much and I wasn't feeling good about it. Hyunwoo's statement about learning German has shifted my mindset completely and now I can give myself a break and get back into studying Korean. This video came at the right time. Thank you Hyunwoo and Billy.

I had to learn that I have "good" Korean days when I feel almost fluent (I'm not even close) and "bad" Korean days when I feel like I forgot everything -- and then realized that is really true of everything we do: when do better some times than others. BTW, when someone says "Say something in Korean," I always reply 한국어로 뭔가.

10:24 - 10:34 hearing this, being Brazilian definitely hits me. I wouldn't say im FLUENT in english but surely on a advanced level, and now im studying Korean THROUGH English. Bro, I'd say that less than 3% of Brazilians know English at this level , bc our school education of English is so poor that we even joke about it, like "I've spent 8 years at school learning English and i don't know how to conjugate the to be verb".
I often forget that learning a language is hard, and is a luxury for a lot of people, and i feel the need to be GOOD in Korean, to study it at a FLUENT level, to understand EVERYTHING that is said to me, or else i am stupid and dumb and i just wasted my time, but NO!! that's not how it works bro, be happy with what you have and not sad about what's missing. Be happy and enjoy the process, not the results, because sometimes the results will be that big and it's okay !!

Their convos could lead to more convos. Today I was wondering...if a westerner spoke mostly Korean for a year, how would that change their facial muscle memory and strenghten the muscles/tone the tongue and mouth muscles used for vocalization? It's kind of a random question but I feel like these two would have so many different answers and maybe prolly Billy's already covered it. I'm thinking of speech as a physical exercise.

I was actually thinking just the other day about the progress I’ve made, which I like to do when I’m feeling discouraged about my Korean level. The things I used to struggle with that I no longer do, the things I still struggle with (and I need to practice more!). It’s always really encouraging to me to take that look back and remind myself that I’ll keep improving as long as I keep going. Thanks for this video, too! I know we all appreciate the encouragement.
On being discontent with your abilities once you reach a more advanced level, I think that’s a good point. I think I would say that I’m intermediate with Spanish, only because I got too comfortable with being able to converse decently, rather than trying to continue to improve it. 😅 I’ll need to keep that in mind for Korean, as I hope to go further with Korean than I have with Spanish.

Also am I the only one who doesn't like those clickbaity videos like "HOW I BECAME FLUENT IN KOREAN IN (insert insanely small amount of time to learn any language)" - no offense, but I always feel weird about these kinds of content because it's not really about being able to learn Korean the fastest, it's not a race ya know? Learning it fast doesn't matter (unless you have a reason to learn Korean that fast, like a new job in Korea 🤔)
Everyone has their own pace, and I am learning how to enjoy the journey and not getting stressed about finishing it. So for anybody who thinks they are too slow, that's not true! You don't have to learn anything in X time, there's no correct time for this :D

This video came at a great time, as I have been having these feelings after more than a year of learning Korean and last week I was so frustrated I cried during my iTalki lesson. Then I also reminded myself: look at all the things you can do already. And if you can answer the question "Does this make you feel happy, does learning, listening, reading etc. Korean make you happy" with "yes", then just keep going. Today during my iTalki lesson I was already so much more confident and happier than ever before with what I could say and my teacher is so lovely and encouraging that there is no reason to worry anyway.
Also, as a native German speaker, I also want to say "wow" that 선현우 선생님 learns German. Viel Glück!

I definitely needed this video. I've been learning Korean for about 3 and a half years, but mostly through osmosis. I taught myself 한글 and casually familiarized myself with the language through basic exposure (shows, music, videos, written song lyrics, etc). Since my learning style has been so passive, there's a lot of holes in my Korean that make it hard for me to stitch sentences together or comprehend what I'm hearing (even if I technically know every word). I know many random general things, but my basics are so scattered that I would struggle to maintain a spoken conversation, lol. These past couple of months, I've been getting more intentional about really refining my Korean, so seeing other learners who have been studying as long as/for a shorter time than I have with a much higher proficiency level has been making me very self-conscious. But it's not too late for me, as long as I keep learning! Thank you so much for making a video on this topic. Your teaching style is definitely very healthy; I'm glad that I ran into this channel this week!
Also, Mr. Hyunwoo here is far more chaotic than I expected, and I absolutely love that.

I live in Mexico and I'm fluent in Spanish, but you're right - we never stop learning, not even our mother tongue! I feel like I have an advantage by this being my third language because I can make more associations. Bread in Spanish is "pan", not too different from 빵. Sure, it would have been easier when I was younger, but I'm not giving up on myself and I'll eventually get to where I want to be...even if I have to stumble the whole way to get there 😆

this is fantastically timed and I feel better after having watched it. i've started studying korean for about a year but it was very on and off with how busy life was so I haven't made much progress as I feel like I should've. I'm excited to have more time to get back into it. feeling more inspired to make this a lifelong journey. :) good luck, everyone!

Recently I’ve been trying to speak Korean to the Korean staff around the city. Most of the time I’ve been too shy and can only muster up 감사합니다, but just the other day I said a full sentence in Korean! I was so nervous, especially when she kept speaking to me in English.. 🙈

i really needed to hear this! i’ve been self studying for almost 5 months now and while i’ve made some progress, it’s been slow 😅 some days i just do not have the time or energy to study or review and then i feel bad for not doing anything. i have to remind myself that it’s okay to take my time and go at my own pace. there’s no rush!

This could not have come.at a better time. I work almost 12 hour days and am too tired to pick up a book and study when I get home. I at least try to expose myself to Korean on a daily basis, whether its dramas, music or books. I still felt like I was lagging behind. The time I need to study will come around again and in the mean time I will utilize the Korean I know to the best of my ability. 이 비디오를 너무 감사합니다!

The collab we all needed :) Also the thing with "oh say something in that language" happens way too often, especially when i'm european and someone is like: oh wow, asian language, say smth, i'll be like : 아..진짜, 이 미친놈 ㅋㅋㅋ Or if i really dont like someone, the word similar to shoe in korean xD

I am currently in a struggle of where I write and test better than I can speak. I think it is because I have the time to organize my thoughts on paper vs coming up with a sentence quickly off the top of my head. This is the exact moment when I feel I don’t know Korean at all. I guess I need to apply the “Take your time” method to speaking Korean as I do in writing/testing. I often feel that if I take my time in the conversation, people will lose interests, and eventually want to stop talking with me 😩. I keep telling myself to stop thinking this way, for I am a learner. Studying grammar, reading books, doing listening exercises for 2.5 years, and then not having people to speak Korean with really slowed my speaking progress, but after setting up a few language exchanges, and making Korean speaking friends, I can see the difference in my speaking/comprehension. This video is very helpful. Thanks for the encouragement. I have used TTMIK and Go! Billy Korean from the start of my Korean Language journey. Please keep up the great job in providing a gateway to learning Korean 🤍

    7:42 is so true 🥲
At first I had a lot of time to study... but now I am much more busy. So I'm looking for different ways to practice my Korean, any opportunity I find is worth it
It's much slower, but I'm still going on 👍
Also so true about the fact that we WANT to learn Korean and it's great because it's much more fun and interesting (I had to learn English at school... much more stressful than what I am now going through with Korean 😌)

what a perfect timing for me to see this. I started to learn Korean during the second lockdown in Germany, because I could't go to work during that time. Now the hotel is open again and I am able to work but I don't have that much time or energy to study and I felt a little bad about it. So thanks for the little reminder that I am doing fine :)

Thanks for the encouragement, Billy! Did you make this for me after our conversation the other day? 🤣 I definitely had no qualms or stress learning Spanish and found it quite easy, perhaps since it seems so similar to English. It definitely feels different emotionally on many levels this time around. Trying to be gentle with myself on learning Korean, which is hard as a perfectionist. I try to remind myself there’s no timeline, and even if I only learn one new word a day, it’s one more than I knew yesterday!

I needed this! I just started studying Korean this year, and a couple of months ago, I found a Korean coworker. I try to say simple things, but when they respond, I don't understand any of it, and it's a little discouraging, because I feel like my listening skills are so far behind. So all of our conversations are one way. I will keep going, and try to learn a few new things every week. Thank you

When I feel bad about how I'm progressing, I just compare myself to when I first started a year ago. I couldn't even pronounce "안녕하세요" correctly, but now I can follow along with TH-cam videos that are completely in Korean and read Webtoons with the help of a dictionary of course. I feel pretty good about my progress so far :D

I know this isn't the most recent video, but I am glad that I found this today. I've been in Korea for 10 years and have been kind of mad at myself for not being better at it. I was dealing with a lot right before and during the pandemic and have not actually studied Korean in a couple of years now. I want to start studying again but need to over the fact that I'm not fluent and have enough Korean to live in Korea. That is cool.

I going to take the TOPIK II exam in April, so I started to study more Korean, since I have some more time this month. But just looking at the TOPIK questions made me realize, how much I don't know yet...
This video motivated me to keep going 감사합니다

Thank you thank you for the video and encouragement. Just what I need. I first learnt Korean back in 2011. And its been 10-ish years since I get into it again, and I totally felt like a loser. And a tad bit shame of myself for letting those 10 years went by without improving/ learning Korean. But after I watch this, I’m motivated again to continue learning and making mistakes and learn again. Its a looong journey but I think I will be able to handle it as long as I treat myself with kindness. Thanks again for the video. Appreciated it really!

What Hyunwoo said about focusing on what we know and what Billy said about not having enough time to study are both very encouraging for me! T^T I always feel like I don't have enough progress and that I should study more. But if I think about it, I'm actually doing better than I did 5 years ago and that should be enough. This video really helped me feel better! I'll definitely be a little kinder to myself while studying hard ;__; Thank you for this!

I, unfortunately, have had to stop learning Korean for the time being. I'm in my last semester of my degree and it's killing me.
I'll go back to it once I'm done in a couple of months.
What I'm more impressed with is that I've been able to teach my father some of what I know. He's not great at it but he's enjoying it.

I needed this kind of video. It made me feel comfortable. I have been learning Korean since 2016 via books. I finished 3 books so far but still cannot speak Korean fluently. So there were sad days and sometimes I felt like "Am I wasting my time?" because I didn't not see myself progressing.
But 현우 씨 and Billy answered those as if I asked them. I can only alot 1-3 hours everyday so I just want to make the most out of it.

I'd also like to add that even if you only had time to look at 5 vocabulary words a day, you're still getting that information in your brain and that's awesome! I often stumble across words that my brain recognizes. I might not remember what they mean, but my brain has at least absorbed the information enough to recognize the word. Which will help learn it faster.
