  • My Son and I took a few days off to visit Southern California. We were able to visit the new location of the Mercedes Classic Center in Long Beach. We stayed in Santa Monica where I was able to take a friends W111 for a short test drive.

One day I have to be able to visit the Classic center. Talk about a Gullwing overload!

Hi John! Respect, you amazingly hit two of my (life-) trigger points. One is my darkblue (wedding-) W111-Coupe from 8/70 which looked identical(!) except automatic and sidemarkers. I sold it in 2001. That design remains the Golden Cut forever.
I am more than reluctant to mention our devastating experiences (as by far the biggest MB-club in Europe) with the selfish Classic Center.... N-Joy!

Glad you enjoyed the Video Oliver. Really like the w111, lots of fun and easy to drive, especially compared to that bath tub rental car:) Sorry to hear of your experiences with the Classic Center. Cheers John.

Hi John, Thanks for sharing your visit to the Classic Center. Hoping to visit there someday. Also enjoyed seeing the 280SE coupe, it is a rare car being a low grill model with rear head rests. Nice to see the engine back. All the best on the continuing restoration work. Ed

We had a great trip. Glad you enjoyed the video. I'm very excited about the engine back safe and sound. Very happy with the work. Still a few other things, heads etc need machine work, but we'll get there. All the best Cheers John

Good to see the engine back. The Classic Center is wonderfull, seeing all those cars being looked after is nice. That white that you showed is a nice shade and has been a while with Mercedes-Benz. MB olive green and their silver, which came in I think 3-4 shades is also nice. Cheers! 🚘

I've never seen that many gullwings in one place. That white one was beautiful. Glad about the engine block too:)
      Cheers John.

Thanks for the feedback and the test drive John. Always curious how my car fares with similar era models as to driving impressions and ride quality. Sorry for the cluttered garage. Wish my garage looked as nice as the CC. 😊
That is some seriously nice inventory of classic Benzes in there. Can't wait to see the 6.3 video 👍

Thanks for letting me take it out. I really liked the extra details. We had a great time!! Cluttered? You should come to my shop. 😄 🤣
      Cheers John 🍻

    ...Moved from Irvine.
I spent a lot of money over the years with the classic center but since the manager retired I haven't bothered. The service lacks the knowledge it once had. The C111 was one a series of experimental cars, including Diesel and rotary engines. Some years after they finished with them a company in Germany started making road going versions with Mercedes M117 engines.
The Blue and white Finny looks like a rally car,as that is the old horizon blue and white competition color of the 1960's.

It's certainly an impressive facility. As far as knowledge, that's why I like chatting with as many people as possible. Once I start on the 6.3 rebuild, I hope you don't mind you'll be hearing from me from time to time:):) Thanks Ron.
      Cheers John.

Really beautiful cars. I had to laugh a little when you said you were in a Hyundai Elantra rental….. as you said it your son panned the camera to the steering wheel……. And it sure looked like it said Dodge on it 😂

😀I know. It was actually a Dodge Challenger GT. About 300hp. It was fun but very poor visibility. The rental guy gave it to me instead of the Hyundai:) Free upgrade!!
      Cheers John.

@@mercedesmaintenance.6339 It was just kind of funny the way it happened on the video…… it was almost like your son was trying to score a few points when he immediately panned the camera to the dodge emblem 😂
