    I picked up this gem of a CRT TV for FREE on Facebook Marketplace! I think it may be the very best TV for gaming on the mini retro consoles like the NES and SNES Classic, PlayStation Classic and all the upcoming ones like the Genesis Mini.
    You get the legit CRT feel, HD support and HDMI input so the mini systems can function and you can use the menus, and on this set in particular, the screen and sound are jaw droppingly good. My camera is 4K but it still doesn't do the experience justice.
    If you are interested in getting one of these, get out there and find one now while they are still around.
    Thanks for watching, make sure you're subscribed so you don't miss the next video!

    i have a similar model, XS955 but the 30 inch model. I bought it used in 2010 when i was in high school living with my parents. Will never forget my dad being kind of upset with his son bringing home an "outdated" TV into the home, lol. Ive officially owned the TV longer than the original owner by a couple years at this point and i still love it as much as i did when i was 18. The PS2 emulator "PC2SX" at some point came out with a universal plugin to "force" widescreen without stretching the image, and ive been having a blast playing the Armored Core and Ace Combat series all over again in glorious 16:9 with some mild upscaling help with the emulator outputting 1080i. Great video and thanks for sharing your story with your 960

    I use mine to hook up all my original consoles to because it has enough ports to fit everything without adapters. It also supports displaying two inputs on the screen at the same time. When friends kids come over to play, one can play NES on the left and the other can play SEGA on the right. The split screen is limited to dual 480p or 720p/480p though. To enable dual screen you need the remote which can be found online for $5.

    Excellent find! I don't have a Sony (I did, but as I was carrying the 200 pounder I had a slight accident...) but I do have an LG CRT 30FZ4D, which I got for free. It is also a CRT with an HDMI input, which I happened to get for free as well. Luckily this one only weighs about 145 pounds so I can manage it better, but I have to agree, the mini systems are amazing on here, and I didn't notice much lag.. on the Snes mini I actually did the input test that is on the Kirby's Avalanche game and saw that it had no input lag. My PS2 via component cables has just the slightest lag but I can live with that! I threw a Fire stick into mine as well and man, some of the older content on youtube looked amazing, I can't wait to watch some newer movies like The Lighthouse and the VVitch on there, I think CRT color depth will really make those movies pop! And yes, got mine from Craigslist, and I also got a 27" Philips along with it!

    Get yourself a home theater receiver with hdmi and component (perfect if you use HD retrovision cables) inputs. A nice set of bookshelf speakers and a dedicated sub and you got total retro audio heaven. That's what I did and you'll be amazed how much detail and overall sound you have been missing out on. • @DamnFoolIdealisticCrusader

    The 960 is amazing and has been the centerpiece of my home theater for years. It’s my favorite tv ever and is so good it rivals my ST60 plasma and is why I can console myself on not having an oled yet. It was the pinnacle of Sony’s CRT know how and still holds up amazingly well today. The only downsides are that like other HD CRTs you have a lack of scanlines and a very tiny amount of lag for retro gaming - however retro games still look and play amazingly well on these. I even like up to PS2 era games and some PS3 titles but after that for new games it is much better to use a modern display monitor for the higher resolution. What’s most amazing about this set is that it has about the best comb filter onboard that I’ve ever seen which makes all standard def content look amazing. This is why it’s the best display I’ve ever seen for VHS, laser disc and even DVD. Blu-rays look stunning on this despite not hitting 1080 P resolution and the superfine pitch to results in a clarity a picture and a black level so deep that it’s incomparable on any modern monitor.
    The hardest thing to deal with is probably the overscan and geometry. It took me ages to get mine calibrated using the service menu and I got it to a point that’s about as good as I can without having it professionally calibrated.
    There is an inherent phosphor lag that some may not see that she have to get used to but there’s a part of what they had to do to make this at work and really not all that bad and only noticeable and very dark scenes with fast moving objects. The one manufacturing flaw they had were the ic power board chips going out every once in a while which is actually a rather easy fix and only a $10 replacement part.
    The rare 4:3 variant xs955 model has the same super fine pitch tube and is amazing since you have the full 36” screen for 4:3 content. However it doesn’t have as many options since it wasn’t designed as a top-of-the-line model and is even heavier than the 960.

    • @bluecar5556
      @bluecar5556 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@RoboticusMusic Using a Panasonic plasma VT60 and a FW900 for gaming on a weekly basis, they are both jaw dropping. Plasma technology is much like a flat CRT without the electron gun and magnets, using the same phosphor concept that don't use sample and hold technique. LCD and OLED tech does use SAH, making fast motion clarity an eye sore when used to CRT's and plasma's. The way I look at it is display technology after CRT's was a downward spiral with plasmas being an exception. Then the resolution 4k, 8k wars started to compensate for the fixed ugly jagged grid, pixel layout of LCD and OLED, to try to make the image look more organic. OLED still lacks depth unlike CRT's but black levels are stunning. Too bad SED was never a thing, that would be the ideal display technology for sure.

      Check out Panasonic’s oled HZ2000. It has the best PQ but also component/composite inputs. I hooked up my OG xbox and it never looked so good. Upscales to 4k? Idk but it looks better than my 400,- framemeister upscaler. Once gamers know about the HZ2000 it will definitely be the best TV for oldschool consoles

    • @TechWithSean
      @TechWithSean  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is a slight overscan on HDMI but it's not really that bad. Movies especially look great on it, and the retro games of course. Newer HD games that push the UI right to the edge of the screen are better over component input sometimes, because it seems to have a bit less overscan that way. I've fudged it as much as I can in the service menu, but if I try shrinking it too far the geometry in the corners goes off balance. It's almost unparallelled for watching something like a DVD on though, or the classic retro systems imo.

    • @audiogear474
      @audiogear474 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TechWithSean Mine looks awesome with N64 Ultra HDMI as well as a wii dual. I'm sure yours would also. I haven't tried the newer stuff on mine. Some of the big sites downplay hd crts but I've been nothing but impressed. They can handle the low res stuff much better than a LCD since LCDs have to upscale where CRTs dont. They draw the number of lines required vs being fixed like a LCD and naturally smooth out some of the jaggies with softer edges. Setting everything up correctly is the big part of it to getting a great pic with these old monitors.

    I was obsessed with this model ...the xbr960...back in its day. I picked up a 970, then finally the 960 some years back. The picture quality for hd movies was breathtaking, with its deep colors and the depth it gives to the picture. But man! It's big as hell! Convergence was a problem on mine, as well as geometry I couldn't fix. After a while, the set I was so obsessed with as a kid I decided to throw out. Nowadays for a CRT fix I'll use a trinitron computer monitor for 240p emulation, and another beastly trinitron tv, the last 36" sd model sony made. Convergence still sucks on that one, but it's miles better for retro gaming with real hardware than an HDCRT like the xbr960. Real hardware on SD CRTs or those broadcast monitors is the absolute best. With RGB!

    • @TechWithSean
      @TechWithSean  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      These are good for films and HDMI based consoles like PS3 or SNES classic, but for real hardware an interlaced TV is best. I have a KV27fs120 and a toshiba 24” that I use for the real systems. RGB modding isn’t worth the hassle on a TV though imo. Just get s-video or component cables and you’re 99% there

    • @bluecar5556

      I've had my fair share of trinitrons and shadow mask CRT's. Aparture grill (trinitrons) are overrated. Give me a shadow mask CRT like a JVC, panasonic, toshiba any day. The broadcast trinitrons are way overrated. The phosphor colors aren't pushed, no bloom and the phosphor pattern of trinitrons aren't the "arcade" look like shadow mask CRT's many of us are more familiar with. Give me curved glass shadow mask CRT any day of the week.

    I have a got a black sony trinitron CRT 34 inch tv from someone.It doesn't have hdmi port but i use an hdmi converter and a firestick to it and the picture quality is better than some modern flat screen tvs.When i connect fire stick to lg led flat and compare it this trinitron the trinitron crt picture seems betterAnd without a doubt the surround sound is way better from the trinitron.Its like a sound system.I was very impressed.The setback is because firestick is made for flatscreen i don't think i get the full video width.But the quality is crystal clear.Also i am sure my electricity bill is going to be higher than usual with this tv and all these plugins.Another setback is that this tv even though is 30 inch is heavy like a bike.I had a hatd time getting it out of the house i got it from as it was upstairs and it really hot a lot of shaking and jerking to get it in my house. With help.It was torture carrying it.I promise mydelf i was never going yo move ever sgain unless it stop working or i was going yo get rid of it.I am planning on getting a new flat screen but i am in 2 monds whether i should get rid of it or keep it as retro tv and show piece to show the younger generation what this big booty tv iwas like back in the days.When i turn it And hear the sound quality and see the picture thoug i have a hatd time deciding. And this tv is hard to kill..lol

      @@BeeRye Yep. Exact same tube between the 34" models but the 960 dropped the 30" size... and that's the one I have. Awesome find, by the way! I bought my KV-30XBR910 new at Circuit City for $2,300 back in 2003/2004 and got a $200 "merchandise card" and the $300 matching stand, both for free. ...but first I returned a $900 30" Samsung HD monitor that just wasn't working out for me (forced 480p content to 16:9, ruining most 480p GameCube games). AVSForum told me the larger 34" models were prone to issues with green blobs due to aperture grill misalignment as the tube heated/cooled but I don't see people complaining today. Never regretted the purchase but sometimes I wish I got the larger one.

    • @frankhoward7645

      The 910 also lacks a digital tuner. That's why it's called a KV instead of a KD.

    • @emmettturner9452
      @emmettturner9452 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@frankhoward7645 Yeah. That would be what I meant up there with the "HD tuner" I said it lacks. Back then you typically bought an "HDTV Monitor" and added an HDTV tuner if you needed it since it was expensive and so many used some other STB for HD content instead. Though the XBR910 was an exception, the scaling hardware for supporting every standard HDTV resolution was usually handled externally which was also a big money-saver. They even had different logos for "HDTV" and "HDTV Monitor" so consumers would understand that it was just an HD monitor with no HD tuner. There were no OTA analog HDTV broadcasts in the USA and no SDTVs needed a digital tuner so "digital tuner" was still synonymous with "HD tuner" during that time.
      Analog broadcasts were still around and the FCC wasn't requiring digital tuners for all TVs yet. Without government subsidies and the digital transition deadline several years away (it wasn't even known when yet) there was no reason to get an external digital SD tuner back then. SD-only external ATSC tuners just weren't a thing yet, so any "digital tuner" was an HD tuner and there was no need to distinguish/specify. Even if you wanted a digital tuner for an SD set you bought an HD tuner and used the analog SD outputs. That's just how it was.

    • @frankhoward7645
      @frankhoward7645 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@emmettturner9452 Thanks for the explanation. I've bought and sold about 10 960s as well as a couple of 910s. When I sell them, I advertise that they're capable of receiving digital signals so you don't need a converter box. That's why rather than saying they have HD tuners, I say they have digital tuners that are capable of receiving free digital over-the-air broadcasts. As far as the 910 is concerned, I learned the hard way that a 910 can't do this when a customer brought his back!

    Two Reasons why this Model is Only good for Movies and bad for Retro Games:
    Huge Inputlag when you want to Play with a console via HDMI
    (Test it with CoD and a PS3 or X360)
    16:9 Aspect Ratio is useless because the old Games and Platforms (PSX, N64, Segas etc) are only Support 4:3
    So this HD CRT is in my Opinion
    by far Not One of the best CRT
    (i come from Germany and we have Premium TVs like Metz or Loewe, that costs on release 4000-5000$ and i have a few CRTs from them)
    when you put a Digital Console in you have the Input lag ( the Most reason People want to Play on CRT is because they have no inputlag )
    And when you put a analog One in you have the wrong aspect ratio

    • @XDRoX619
      @XDRoX619 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@7ngel Only the HD CRTs have input lag. The input lag is created by the TV having to process the picture to all those pixels. In turn making pretty much any retro game unplayable IMO. I tried hooking up an original NES to my 46" Sony LCD once and I couldn't even play Super Mario Bros. the lag was so horrendous. Noticeable the first time I jumped. It makes for a very frustrating experience. I've heard that some of these HD CRTs can have almost no lag to very little, especially compared to a modern LCD TV, which I'm assuming the set talked about in this video must have been or else the OP would not have title the video what he did. Also, what I'm not sure about...One these new mini consoles companies are releasing, are the input lag problems solved? Maybe it only happens when connecting an original system up, because these new mini systems are made to be played on modern TVs. So I assume lag wouldn't be an issue.

    • @realamericannegro977

There is the Philips 32 or 28-PW9551, it supports HDMI input and 1080i or 720P 60hz, and the Samsung WS-32Z409T with identical specs. And thos are just two I've found out about in the past few weeks of randomly stumbling upon them. And, generally, the Philips and Samsung are a lot easier to find than the Sony ones, while having near identical image quality, since at that time, wether you had a trinitron or not, CRT technology had peaked. This TV is ideal to play Nintendo Switch 2D games and other similar stuff that outputs 720p or 1080i, however for pure retrogaming (older 240P systems like the Genesis or SNES) it`s not very good for several reasons, main two being. huge black bars on the side of the picture are very distracting and (most importantly) this TV cannot display a pure 240P image with scanlines.
    In conclusion, a pure 15Khz 240P 4:3 TV set is the way to for anything PS1 or older.

    • @TechWithSean
      @TechWithSean  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nope. That seems like a weird only reason to use a CRT though, since you could just emulate scanlines on any display. The deep picture, solid blacks and fluid motion are great compared to a fixed pixel display. Plus, I don’t really want to see scan lines on videos, films, or HD games. I have a kv27fs120 if I want to break out original NES hardware or something, these mini systems on here are a better experience though, imo. No repeatedly blowing into your Battletoads cart and still not being able to get it to load, lol.

    • @lemons2300
      @lemons2300 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      CRT's inherent trait is to draw pictures in scanlines by electron beams hitting the phosphor mask/grille. Higher definition just means more of those scanlines. All CRTs should have scanlines. Electron beam raster creates these scanlines. It's just how CRTs work.
      LCDs appear to use a gradient method on its fixed pixel display. Shifting liquid crystals deciding which colors to shine through by the backlight. Newer LCD techs have more dynamic backlighting, improving black levels. OLED is one of those types of displays in whichs, I believe, uses pixel by pixel backlighting (I'm not an expert, don't take my word for it). Still, it's a fixed pixel display just like any LCDs.
      Check out the video "How a TV Works in Slow Motion - The Slow Mo Guys"
      Note:
      I think OP's preference is perfectly normal. Scanlines are unique to CRTs. It's a relic, a unique technological marvel you won't find in fixed-pixel LCD tech.
      LCDs can also appear to have fluid motion, given that the display is capable of higher refresh rate such as 144hz PC gaming monitors. CRTs appear to have crisper motion (than 60Hz LCDs) at only 60hz most likely because of the use of scanlines instead of gradient frame changing of LCDs, adding to motion blur.
      The most authentic CRT emulation on LCD would require the LCD to be able to replicate the effect of CRT electron beams hitting the phosphor grille. A bright dot occupying one or four pixels of the LCD display, moving from left to right, drawing lines like that, changing the colors of the image in the same speed as a 60hz CRT TV. In other words, nearly impossible to accomplish on a consumer LCD TV. Why not just get a CRT to experience all of its glory with little to no effort.

    • @overnightdelivery
      @overnightdelivery 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      All CRTs have scanlines. They are just harder to see at higher resolutions. People are obsessed with the thick scanlines on old arcade games because the games were designed around low resolution displays. So yes old school arcade games may not look as 'authentic ' but will still look better than an LCD. CRTs have many other characteristics that make them unique other than scanlines.

    These HD-CRTs can only do 1080i/540p. So it's best to use normal CRTs for 480i/240p games.

      Since this is a premium tv im sure it can do 240p. I think i even saw someone do it. Plus my samsung hdcrt does it so i know this will.

    I got one because of all the hype and I gave it away cause it wasnt that amazing. For all consoles 6th gen and below you want to use a crt that isnt digital and is 4x3 aspect ratio, they just look better, for 8th gen and up you want 1080p and this tv doesnt do that, so it leaves the 7th gen (xbox 360 and ps3) as the best suited in my opinion and I felt those consoles looked better on my OLED than the xbr960, i really wanted it to be amazing but it was pretty underwhelming.

    HD CRTs (with HDMI) have horrible lag for retro gaming. I'm curious if just didn't notice that?

      Mohammad Karimi - the mini consoles only have HDMI - it feels less laggy than playing them on an LCD imo
