Just picked one of these up recently, but it is the 32” version. My wife and I drove 4 hours to get it, and 4 hours to get back home. It cost me $100, but it was worth it. Beautiful screen and it came with remote. Looks brand new! Lady lived on the second floor and it was a chore to get it down a flight of stairs because it weighs so much!
I picked up a Sony Wega Trinitron KV-21FS120. It's exactly the same as this one except for having a smaller screen and speakers. I'm very happy with the picture. There's nothing like a good CRT
The Wii looks fantastic on these as well, even better on an HDCRT with progressive scan but I'm so glad to have stumbled on these it makes retro gaming much more pleasurable than I was used to on an LCD.
@JungleBubble Absolutely, refresh rate makes all the difference all the "jaggies" look infinitely better when they're not dancing around like on an OLED. Not to mention many games don't display transparency and shadows properly without all those expensive adapters... Although I may save money in the long run on the back surgery I'll need after moving this beast again in the future!
I got one from of these off the side of the road in Surrey for free one day. I use it with a modded Wii for emulation in 240p and the picture is really just stunning. There is no better way to see retro games than with this tv right here in my humble opinion.
Great review of the Wega Trinitron. I don't think I've seen a CRT in years, but I'd like to pick one up. Still have an nes, snes and n64. Interesting article I found yesterday, about how in 2007 LG was still innovating CRT for the African market, model 21FU1R; they're supposedly Very slim in comparison to others that came before it. Unfortunately very unlikely of finding one in the States. I want to say I grew up with a faux wood grain 27in RCA with old school knobs for vol/channel. If you've never carried a humongous crt up three flights of narrow apartment staircase, you don't know...
I unfortunately had to pay $80 for mine, but it's in excellent condition, and the guy took it apart and cleaned it up nice for me. Can't beat the 4:3, S-video, Component, 27 inch, No HDMI combo...pretty much perfection. I'll keep my eyes open on Craigslist for a free one to back this up.
I was going to say make sure to clean the inside but it looks like you're covered. Fairly certain mine fried from dust. My A-board blew out so I can see a faint image when it degausses then black. Don't have time to recap. Oh well, I have another Trinitron. 😁
Viewer here from the Philippines. I bought myself a Sony Trinitron Vega KV-SR292N63K on Jaunary 3, 2021 for PHP4,500(about US$90). I have my PSOne connectes to it via S-Video cables and my PS2 Fat model via component cables. It was very heavy to lift but it was worth it. Image quality is crisp and clean. I love it.
I’ve got the opportunity to pick a 32” one of these up with the original remote for $100. This video is swaying me heavily towards making the purchase.
I scored the 25 incher version of this 10 years ago and it's amazing, I have hooked it to the modded Wii and also I got a very expensive VGA to component box and a custom PC with a 4850 radeon and old drivers that can output 240p and other low resolutions from the era, for pixel perfect emulation.
I was able to pick one up at a local thrift store last July. Looks amazing through component although the geometry on the edges and bowing at certain parts is a bit annoying
Excellent! Yes, the "moustache" bowing is something to get used to. I found that pushing the horizontal and vertical edges into the overscan area from the service menu helps immensely for edge geometry.
@@daviddenuzzio7746 yes, too bright and too high contrast does weird things. I've had a few flat Wegas and they both had this issue along with the edge geometry waviness.
@@hipnotyq the flyback stopped holding voltage. I was getting a faint picture when I turned the set on then fade to black. Repair parts were far too expensive compared to just finding a new set.
I just picked one up from someone down the street that was getting rid of it. Even came with the original remote. Geometry isn't so great. The yoke is pretty good though. Need to do some more adjustments. Will use it for when friends are over. I'll stick with my 20" PVM for my personal gaming.
Seen this TV waiting for disposal at my local department store. I worked there before and know they only ever used it for group training videos that happen about once every 2-3 years so it has extremely low hours on it. Requested that they call me when the order comes down the line to get rid of it. Doubt I'll ever see another one in such good condition unless it's practically still new in the box.
@@RetroGameRarities That's what I figured too, I got enough older consoles sitting around to justify it. You might not be so jealous if you knew what I paid for them lol, but they are some of my holy grail items that I've always wanted.
opa brother, eu tenho a sua exata tv mas os numeros de serviço dela no manual estão errados, você consegue me ajudar com os numeros originais dela? Quem sabe trocamo uma ideia e eu te ajudo a ajustar ela também
I prefer the older "black" model Sony's with the curved screen over these newer flatscreen crt's. The flatscreen might look appealing with the tv turned off, but they tend to have more geometry issues. You can see this at 8:20, where straight lines are bent everywhere. Still, these days, beggars can't be choosers. If you can find one of these in good condition, snap it up!
Totally agree. Loved my D-Series. The component XBR curved sets are extremely hard to find in my region. The flat glass is plagued by the moustache bowing but I've grown passed these issues. Just happy to play light gun games. :)
@@RetroGameRarities Yeah I mean I generally prefer a curved screen but the flat Sony SD sets have some advantages that the curved ones don't. For example most of them have component inputs whereas the curved ones only have s-video at best. I guess some people can do an RGB mod on the curved ones but that's a big hassle compared to already having component in the TV & just having to get an RGB scart> component converter. Also they seem to have darker blacks than the older Sony TVs b/c the glass of the screen is darker from what I've seen.
I miss my JVC. This Trinitron just died and I can't source the A Board to repair it. I may just try to recap and see if that does it. I do have a replacement curved glass Trinitron though. 😁
This is my favorite set out of my collection of CRT TV I've heard that the FV series is better But I can't imagine anything looking better than this set though
What's up man, glad to find your channel! I recently picked up time crisis 3 (big hyped, always wanted this as a kid) I was wondering what the best crt tv for lightgun games are? I've also seen some people say curved screens are better then flat crt's?
Cool! Thanks for checking it out. I like both styles. I've found curved have less geometry issues at the edges. However, the flat screen crt cuts glare big time. All up to personal preference. If you're going flat screen, go Sony Wega or JVC I'art. Curved, JVC D-series or a later model Trinitron. Make sure they have component in, that is key for any later model light gun games.
@@shockwave.9749 Whichever is the cheapest and closest! 32" are beastly to carry, but are amazing. I currently have a 32" D-series and it was a ridiculous carry down my steps. Make sure either sets have all the inputs you want. I personally like all inputs - RF, Composite, S-Video and Component. You can't go wrong with either set.
Indeed. I actually went back to a curved Trinitron for my set, it doesn't have the bowing. Unfortunately I had to let my D series go awhile back. Best shadow mask set ever.
@@RetroGameRarities reasonable, if I ever find a curved XBR trinitron with component I'll be going with it but those are rare. I do have a curved trinitron waiting on the sidelines incase anything happens to my precious D Series. Great channel btw, keep the vids coming.
Last week I bought a similar model like yours, with the only difference that is a KV- 29fs120. I'm not sure, but think I have a problem with my TV in regards to the sound of one of the red inputs at the back. I'm refering the red input at the botton where the S-video input starts, forming a vertical line. After plugging my S-Video connector of a ps1 or n64, both consoles look good, don't have problems with the white connector neither, but after having plugged the red one the sound is mostly heard on the left speaker, the right is almost inaudible, you can barely hear anything and the sound seems to hear like it's in mono. If I disconnect the red it starts to be heard on both sides but the sound is still in mono and doesn't sound as it should be. This doesn't happen when I plug the audio cables on the front inputs, the sound quality there is really good and I can hear some melodies that I can't when they are plugged on the back. Does your tv sound like that too? Do you think mine has a defect?
That's weird. Sounds like an issue to me. You may want to try blowing compressed air in the red input and/or electrical contact cleaner. May just be a dirty connection. Good luck!
@@RetroGameRarities Thank you. Definitley I must call a professional to do the job because I have little knowledge about TV components and I don't want to completely mess it up.
I got a Sony Wega kv-xa29m31 for free. It was heavy as heck but great condition. I'm looking forwards to trying it out after i make some room. Will test it with some Timesplitters or Morrowind.
I think mine is tarting to die. The picture toward the center is blurry while the edges are sharp, and the reds bleed and crawl like crazy. Can't figure out what the change in the service menu to deal with it.
I never understood retro gamers that go chasing after HD CRTs with 16:9 screen ratio. It’s basically has the same upscale input lag issue as an LCD, the ratio of an LCD, and the weight and size of a huge SD CRT. You may as well just get an LCD and retrotink and save your arms the stress of heavy lifting
Hey when you stated that Killer Instinct was a bit dark for you, which I agree it was, is that a situation where you adjust contrast or brightness? I always have a helluva time getting my set just right. I usually calibrate using the old thx calibration tool on many older dvds but that doesn’t always work the best for games. Brightness and contrast always mess me up, not to mention I don’t even think they are called those too names in this menu if I remember right. I’m picking one of these up today for free with the Sony stand that was made for it. I honestly can’t believe it
Great score! Quick tip: there are 4 picture presets. Vivid, Standard, Theater and something else, I forgot. I set the Standard preset to my liking by getting the blacks as dark as I can along with other tweaks and use this for a majority of my consoles. The darker consoles, like the Atari 2600, I set to Vivid and tweak to my liking with more brightness and contrast. This way I can toggle between the presets when needed without having to manually adjust settings for each console or game. Hope this helps!
I have one of these...it's too bad, unlike some other Trinitron of that era (2005-2006), there were some that were HD, turns out this one isn't, so of course it doesn't have an hdmi output which sucks because back in the mid 2000's, I always had a TV plugged to my computer's graphics card, back then it was S-Video + Composite Sound (or optical in some cases, as my sound card supported it back then, worked awesome with the PS2) to my stereo, but these days you'd be hard pressed to find a graphics adapter with an s-video out, I started doing that with my AMD Duron 700mhz in 2000 so... I want to sell it (can't believe how some will pay for this!), but I do want to get an HD CRT Trinitron, one of those with an HDMI port would be even better. It's too bad it doesn't have an optical port for sound though. Thanks for letting me know I have what is considered pretty golden for a CRT TV....when I bought it....LCD's became pretty cheap 6 months later. Now that I have a plasma to use a second monitor, I know I can sell this one easy and almost get all the money back I paid for it in 2005. Thanks. The HD CRT Trinitron I want would be to game with my snes/gamecube/gameboy advance(or DS) games that work through the gamecube adapter and maybe, if I can get my hands on one, a PSX....the one I had was modded and was already acting weird because of it at times back in '99. Good vid. What Sony Trinitron HD CRT would you recommend for the same general purposes, it might have a desktop or laptop plugged to it at times, another one obviously, I wouldn't be moving those awkward heavy things a lot on purpose, and some gaming systems, I got a custom made Gamecube Component (RGB) video cable and I only tested it at the home of the person who sold it to me, so I will definitely be trying that too if I can find one that's not sold at an insane price (price for electronics are always, even when we had monetary parity or quasi-parity, more expensive in Canada for reasons I never fully grasped), even if you live 10 minutes from the border and go to Best Buy, you might as well drive into the US and buy there, but you gotta get a passport drivers license and I don't opt for it every year, I surely haven't in the last 2, not important enough to be allowed in.
Where I am in California a 36inch is going for anywhere from $150 to $300 it’s insane but I guess if you are serious about your gaming then it’s no big deal
I got a free sony wega from 2003 needs some repairs I think we'll the coaxial port is missing and the componet not wanting to work with my component cables. I know the cables are good because it works on a Samsung Blanco TV perfectly fine.
Thanks for checking the channel out! As far as in depth calibration goes, that could be a long video with many variables. I calibrate my sets to my liking, right or wrong. I put a link to the service manual in the description. Check that out and check out Retro Tech's channel, dude is a pro when it comes to refurbishing CRTs.
I've acquired a KV-21FX30K this week, and although the picture's great, it always starts up in 16:9. I can switch to 4:3 with the remote, but that's a bit frustrating for a basically 4:3 TV. Is there a way to change the default zoom mode?
Agreed, you don't want 16:9. Have you checked out the menu? Is it it on all inputs or just component? If not you'll need to switch it in the service menu. Also, great score!
@@RetroGameRarities Thanks! So far I have checked it only with one Mega Drive/Genesis connected via CRT (RGB signal I think). I have checked the basic and service menus, but none of the menu items I saw seemed to refer to aspect ratio.
@@jbmaru hmm...that's weird. The set in this video had the aspect ratio change in the regular menu. Unfortunately it's long gone as the flyback died. The only thing I can suggest is checking the manual. I found it here: www.sony-asia.com/electronics/support/product/kv-21fx30k/manuals
@@RetroGameRarities Thanks for your replies. I looked up the issue on forums and there seem to be some issues between consoles such as the Mega Drive, Neo Geo and some Trinitrons when connected with SCART cables. I confirmed it by plugging in my Master System, for which the TV started up in 4:3. Pin 8 of the SCART plug determines aspect ratio with its voltage. A forum post advised the OP to simply cut off pin 8. So I took one of my Retrogaming Cables, said a prayer, cut off the pin... And got 4:3 aspect ratio... Only after switching inputs manually with the remote, as that pin was also sending a signal to switch inputs. A Pyrrhic victory. Another solution was to change the voltage of that pin, but I'm not that good at electronics. A funny thing is I never had that problem with the Samsung I'd been using so far. Fortunately I have more cables, and should the remote die, I can still make the switch from the front panel.
@@jbmaru Awesome! Thanks for posting a follow up, it will be good for the community if someone else has the same issues. Glad it worked out and enjoy that Sony in all it's glory!
I prefer the jvc d series?? It just looks better in my opinion? I cant explain it it makes 2D games more vibrant and 3D. I have about five other Trinitron s and i cant get any of them to look as good as the jvc.
Hey I got one thats very similar to this, in the same line. its a SONY WEGA KV-29FS110 I got it mainly for PS2 due to the component video, but it seems very flickery and not clear, motion gives it a "combin" effect, apparently it has something to do with the signal being displayed in 480i as opposed to 240p, i tried forcing it to 240p through a softmod app and it did look MUCH sharper, so its clear the issue is with the higher resolution signal being output or maybe some post processing done by the CRT itself, which i cant seem to find in the service menu, do you think you can help me? Ive read it was something about "deflickering"
Hey man I inherited that same TV! Excited to hear it has a great rep. I also own a kd-30xs955.(made in April 2005) Reading up on it I don't know. Seems to be a lot of pros and cons. Supposed to have an amazing sound. You have any thoughts or input on the kd-xs955 line? Has component, S video,, HDMI,..Thanks. Love your video.
This Trinitron series is great! I have the service manual linked in the description for tweaks you may need. I don't have much experience with the xs series. Any of the HDs are great picture but can't play light gun games due to the refresh rate, so I never look for 'em. I'm sure the picture is outstanding though. Thanks for the support!
I'm looking at one of these sets on Facebook right now...do you think it would be worth a 2 hour round trip? I wish it wasn't flat screen but hey, a Trinitron is a Trinitron!
Unless it's in pristine condition, I personally would wait for something closer. These sets most likely will have some issue with them by now due to age. But if you're looking for a road trip during Covid, it couldn't hurt to get out of the house. ;)
Few options here. If you're playing Atari through RF, I suggest Vivid (which is not what's showcased in the video, it's Standard in the video). Otherwise, I put mine on Standard with Normal color temp and lower the brightness until I'm satisfied with the blacks. Then tweak saturation and sharpness levels, so it's more customized to my room lighting and taste.
I don't think you can compare the two with geometry. The picture is amazing in this set. If you want ultra crisp CRT, find yourself a CRT computer monitor and run VGA. That would be a fair comparison with a PVM. Thanks for watching!
I have another trinitron that's been having weird behavior with the s-video and composite inputs in the back. Either one will work and the other won't and vice versa. I thought it would auto detect which input was sending signal and automatically switch to it. It doesn't seem to be doing that. Any ideas?
@@RetroGameRarities How do I specify which input to use though? The ports in the back has both compsite and s-video and they both seem to go to VIDEO1. Unless there's another S-VIDEO input option that the menu buttons isn't allowing me to access.
@@RetroGameRarities There is an RCA input with composite video with 2 audio inputs plus another s-video input right above those in the back of the TV. There is a regular composite RCA input in the front for VIDEO2.
@@vodkagobalsky sounds like you have a S-Video and composite shared input in the rear with stereo out for additional speakers. Is there a way to fix the image warping? Like some areas of the screen may warp the image regardless of the service settings. God knows if there's anyone able to service these things anymore
I just picked one of these up for $5 (well I should say I got the smaller 20" model) and have been testing older consoles such as the ColecoVision on it - via RF at the moment. The geometry issues seem to be really bad and can't even remotely be rectified using the "Tilt" adjustment. I'm hoping that composite and component will look better. I actually wanted a smaller CRT (say around 14"), are there any makes/models you can recommend?
Good score! Did you try the service menu to get the geometry sorted? If you're looking for sets that most likely won't have geometry issues, look into curved Trinitrons or JVC D-Series.
@@RetroGameRarities Thanks for the recommendations. I'm messing about in the service menu just now with the service manual beside me. Mine seems to appear as if it's completely rotated a few degrees counter clockwise but I can't seem to find a suitable adjustment in the service menu and Tilt doesn't seem to do what is needed either.
@@Ikrananka if you have the service manual, it should tell you how to discharge the anode safely. Don't do the screwdriver method you see on YT. Read the manual and follow it. You'll be gold.
@@RetroGameRarities I just picked up the same exact model for $30. I can’t tell geometry issues on 3D games. But on 2D side scroller games the geometry issues are very apparent and distracting. It makes me wonder why gamers swear by these over curved CRTs? Is it just because it’s a trinitron with component inputs? Do you choose image quality over geometry?
@@chchris25 so here's my take. This set is second to none for the digital comb filter on composite inputs. This is actually why I sold my D-Series to pick this set up. Sharpness is also amazing from the aperture grille and color is great. The service menu also offers plenty of options to tweak your picture. The flat screen was built for less glare which is very noticeable over curved screens but it definitely introduces geometry issues. Once you get used to it, the 2D side scrollers are less noticeable. If I could find the elusive XBR series, I'd get one of those. Problem is, we're all used to perfect geometry from flat panel displays now.
@@RetroGameRarities Interesting, so there is plenty of pros vs cons on this set. I need to learn to calibrate this on the service menu. Why do you recommend an XBR set? Isn’t that an HDCRT ? My neighbor is selling his KV-36XBR250 but I don’t have the space for it.
@@chchris25 yep the pros outweigh the cons. Older XBRs are curved CRTs with component. 👍 I'll see if I have the service manual for this set and post it in the description. Have to agree its a great model, I had a 32fs100, which is very similar to this model but with a few less bells and whistles. Picture was great, sound was awesome, weight...was 170 pounds. You bet! I have some things in the hopper.
I just picked one up from someone down the street that was getting rid of it. Even came with the original remote. Geometry isn't so great. The yoke is pretty good though. Need to do some more adjustments. Will use it for when friends are over. I'll stick with my 20" PVM for my personal gaming.
Great video man just got this tv for my ps2 and NES
Excellent! Enjoy all the features.
My great grandfather had the tv in the intro. Fine tuning the channel quality ftw
Looking forward to volume 2
Seen this TV waiting for disposal at my local department store. I worked there before and know they only ever used it for group training videos that happen about once every 2-3 years so it has extremely low hours on it. Requested that they call me when the order comes down the line to get rid of it. Doubt I'll ever see another one in such good condition unless it's practically still new in the box.
I just bought a Sony KV-27FS320, I'm absolutely loving it! Bastard UPS guy smashed the top plastic corners of it a bit but still works great.
Excellent! Enjoy that amazing set!
I certainly will! I also have a Sony KV-36FS320 coming. Not sure where I'm going to put it but I couldn't resist lol

One of my all time favs. 😁
Great video! I picked this same model from 2004 for free today. Came with a remote too
Thanks for watching! It's a great set! Remote is a bonus!
@@overkill7990 yes sir! I have no desire to RGB mod any TVs. I'd rather have a plug n play component.
I hope one day you do the widescreen hd crt and the 4:3 hd crt, and also the Grail of big crt 's the KV-27FV310 (or any of the FV310).

The 310 is an amazing piece of engineering. Having a subwoofer in the set?! Unheard of.
Sony Trinitron is excellent but JVC is also good. Especially with the RF out put
I miss my JVC. This Trinitron just died and I can't source the A Board to repair it. I may just try to recap and see if that does it. I do have a replacement curved glass Trinitron though. 😁
This is my favorite set out of my collection of CRT TV
I've heard that the FV series is better
But I can't imagine anything looking better than this set though
@@RetroGameRarities thanks for the info! Found two trinitron on Craigslist, KV-32FS13 and KV-27FS100L, which would be your recommendation?
@@shockwave.9749 Whichever is the cheapest and closest! 32" are beastly to carry, but are amazing. I currently have a 32" D-series and it was a ridiculous carry down my steps. I love the picture on these sets but the infamous wega bow is just too much for me. JVC D Series all day personally
Great channel btw, keep the vids coming.

hi man nice video.I have the same tv but I do not the resolution only 480 i and 480 p?

How do I access the service menu on this tv?
Hey! There's a link in the description for the service manual download. This has all the functions for the service menu.
One word though. Lag 🥺
I love this CRT, but my Dreamcast light gun games didn't work very well with it. Confidential MIssion was pretty much unplayable.

Great video!
Hey I got one thats very similar to this, in the same line. its a SONY WEGA KV-29FS110
I got it mainly for PS2 due to the component video, but it seems very flickery and not clear, motion gives it a "combin" effect, apparently it has something to do with the signal being displayed in 480i as opposed to 240p, i tried forcing it to 240p through a softmod app and it did look MUCH sharper, so its clear the issue is with the higher resolution signal being output or maybe some post processing done by the CRT itself, which i cant seem to find in the service menu, do you think you can help me? Ive read it was something about "deflickering"
Flickering is normal on 480i which is the resolution of most ps2 games. You get used to it after a while.

This Trinitron series is great! I have the service manual linked in the description for tweaks you may need. I don't have much experience with the xs series.
But if you're looking for a road trip during Covid, it couldn't hurt to get out of the house. ;)

I wish mine didn't die. Favorite set I owned.
What's the picture setting you think for this tv? Standard ? Movie? Sports or vivid? And should I put it on warm cool or normal?
Few options here. If you're playing Atari through RF, I suggest Vivid (which is not what's showcased in the video, it's Standard in the video). Otherwise, I put mine on Standard with Normal color temp and lower the brightness until I'm satisfied with the blacks. Then tweak saturation and sharpness levels, so it's more customized to my room lighting and taste.
Nice review. How would you compare this to a PVM or BVM?
I don't think you can compare the two with geometry. The picture is amazing in this set. If you want ultra crisp CRT, find yourself a CRT computer monitor and run VGA. That would be a fair comparison with a PVM. Thanks for watching!
@@RetroGameRarities Thanks for the tip!
I have another trinitron that's been having weird behavior with the s-video and composite inputs in the back. Either one will work and the other won't and vice versa. I thought it would auto detect which input was sending signal and automatically switch to it. It doesn't seem to be doing that. Any ideas?
Is this an older Trinitron? AFAIK you have to manually change the inputs. I.e. S-Video on input 1, Composite on input 2.
@@RetroGameRarities How do I specify which input to use though? The ports in the back has both compsite and s-video and they both seem to go to VIDEO1. Unless there's another S-VIDEO input option that the menu buttons isn't allowing me to access.

Retro Game Rarities no I really want to though. I LOVE CRTS!

All personal taste and how your TV performs. If it enhances your particular set, do it!
What's the main difference between this model and the one ending in 170?
Just bells n whistles. 170 will have a few more functions.
i found a kv32fs120 and got it back to my house. i think it has issues tho even tho it fully works. it blinks red 15 times THEN turns on
Good score! Probably has voltage issues but if it still works, enjoy it!
@@RetroGameRarities is it ok if it works? a sony guy said it was an issue with power
@@dorianmv4988 I would use it. If it's starts on fire, I wouldn't use it. :)

what is it Sony 32" Trinitron WEGA CRT Television worth
Whatever anyone is willing to buy it for. 😁 In all seriousness, this totally depends on region. In my area, I can find these frequently on FB and Craigslist for free.
Great video! Do these Trinitron Wegas do 480p over Component?
Thanks! No this particular set doesn't support 480p only 480i. There are EDTV Wegas. I believe the higher grade 27fs170s have this, which is 480p.
@@RetroGameRarities Thanks for the reply! I was actually thinking of getting one of these! How does the lightgun fair on one of these?
@@RonyIsaPony Lightgun is solid. Played many hours of Wild Gunman and Time Crisis on this set!
How much is a 2005 sony wega model numberKLV-32M1 worth?
Whatever anyone is willing to pay. 😉
What is the difference betweeen the FS100 and FS120?
Just a few bells n whistles. The 120 has a comb filter that cleans up the composite signal.
What's the difference between the fs120 and the fv300/fv310??
Just different options. Usually the 310s have a subwoofer in them.
