I haven’t been to Thailand for 17 years but I spent 10 months there and had the time of my life . I loved the simplicity the culture the way of life . I loved jumping on the small boats to go island hoping. It’s just an opinion of mine I think I would prefer to go by bike ( if I had time ) of course if I didn’t I would take the boat , I wouldn’t have a problem with it .

This ferry is intended mainly for trucks, I had quite a bit to do with the initial concept and my previous company were involved with the inspections of the ship etc prior to purchase. It is going to be interesting to see if it actually becomes viable. For info, Chucksamet Port is actually a commercial port, serving mostly the Thai Offshore Sector, although the Thai Navy do use it a lot, the main Naval port, Mahidol, is next door, where coincidentally the Aircraft Carrier is currently in dry dock for maintenance.

I would not recommend using the handlebars to tie the bike down, they can snap off very easily. Best way is to clamp the front wheel in a chock bolted to the deck (some ferries have this method) but most rely on wire ropes run through cleats on the deck that you attach the ratchet straps to either side of the bike and the strap then goes over the seat with a big pillow between strap and bike seat (If the strap is too tight this can damage the plastic base of the seat in some cases so I always supervise the deck hand while they tie it down to make sure its not bending the seat) My favoured way if the chocks are not available is from the bike frame to the wire ropes, one on each side, with the bike on the sidestand (three points of contact with the deck) ratchet straps tight enough to keep the bike from tipping either way but allowing the suspension to work to avoid snapping the sidestand. Always release the strap on the side away from the stand first so it doesn't pull it over. Never put it on the center stand, with only two points of contact (front wheel and stand) you get no way to stop the bike rolling (leave it in gear) and if the seas are rough the stand can spring back up at any point and leave the bike falling on its side quicker than you could shout **** it.
The only time I've seen bikes strapped to the side of the ship is on the ferries to the Isle of Man for TT week where they don't care how they are tied down nor if they arrive damaged, they just care that they got your money.
Watch some videos of bikes on the ferries from the UK to Spain to see how they do it, very successfully.

I drove from Texas to Minnesota and Texas to Arizona and afterwards I realized taking the plane is actually the best way to do it. I thought yeah this will be no problem but it takes a toll on ya and its better to feel refreshed and energetic. But there's always a price for convenience.

    • @jameskeyes1131
      @jameskeyes1131 3 ปีที่แล้ว

That's what I was thinking. Plane fares in Asia are cheap and it would only take 2-1/2 to 3 hours, arriving still fresh and save the 20 hour boring ferry journey. Couldn't take the bike but not that many people ride big bikes here. I bet the fares for this very expensive ship won't be that cheap.

I will 100% use this when it becomes available. I have toured around most of Northern Thailand and love the option of having no real plan for what I do tomorrow. I have been to Hat Yai, Songkhla, Phuket etc, but the thought of having to do that awful middle section of the road South and then back, has so far stopped me riding any further South than Prachuap Khiri Khan (even that was mind numbing). This option makes it a one way trip and you still get to explore the full Western Seaboard section on the way back North.

@@Rides4Kickz It's a brilliant idea in my opinion. Their options are endless, mini trips to Malaysia, or North Thailand for example.. I lived near a port in the UK, where mini cruise ships would carry passengers from Hull to Netherlands or Belgium. This is very popular, due to the onboard entertainment, and also a mini holiday. But this option in Thailand, is different, as you can go on deck, and survey the views, which will be amazing. Going on deck in the North Sea, is not advisable, freezing temperatures and adverse weather. Only issue I could see, maybe be the cost to local customers...

This ferry terminal was completed when I first arrived in Thailand. They built it with customs capability because one of the original intents was for ships to travel to Malaysia and Singapore. But the terminal sat brand new unused for years. I think most of its traffic will be trucks taking products from the large Chonburi & Rayong manufacturing industry. Sure beats driving for 3 days to take goods to Southern Thailand.

Carnival cruises just started back up 3July2021 weekend in the USA. Maybe travel will start to come back everywhere. Any ferry or cruises to Singapore from Thailand?
We're hoping to get back to Thailand in December, but we'll see what's happening in the world.
    Best of luck,
    Jon & Noi from Florida

Thank you for showing this option. The ship might be big for Thailand, but its size is that of the very small ferries in Europe. I did use often the Calais/Dover, Hook van Holland/Harwich (over night), Oostende/Dover, Hull/Rotterdam (over night), and now since I live in Ireland Roslaire/Roscoff and Dublin/Cherbourg (both over night) ferries. I love the concept of sleeping on them and be fresh in the morning for the next day. The Atlantic and the North Sea can be more rough than the Golf of Thailand and I did see many people vomiting on board. I advise the weaker of you to get a cabin in the middle of the ship as it rolls there much less. No window? Does not matter, but you sleep better. It would have been nice to see how far the seats recline as you want to try to sleep in them. The sleep boxes remind me of the box hotels Japan is famous for, but which you also have e.g. on Don Muang Airport, Bangkok.

You seem to get very excited about a ferry, I’am sure after 20 hours that will recede. Have you ever been on a cruise ship, I’am sure you would be in absolute ecstasy lol. By the way the worlds largest car ferry runs from Dublin to Holyhead in Wales, can carry 1,342 cars or 240 articulated trucks and up to 2,000 passengers, it’s called Ulysses and it has 12 decks!

Standard 1250 GSA in Thailand £22,276.54 same model in the UK £15,345.00 thats before you start adding luggage etc so it would probably take you over or close to £30k depending what you wanted on it

Looks awesome! Like a BC ferry. Not quite a cruise ship, but not just a little people mover ferry either. Will be a great alternative option to go south rather than domestic airlines or driving/biking all that way! Love it! Thanks for the update!

I took quite a few long ferry trips in Philippines. Some good and some bad. The best were like that with nice bedrooms and restaurants. Nice if you leave late evening save on a hotel and arrive in the morning. Great fun

Oh the days gone by riding the Alaska Marine Highway ferry system around SE Alaska, BC Canada, and N Wash ! Nice sized hauler vessel the Blue Dolphin ! Tourism and local nationals going east to southwest will travel by U-Tapao airport mostly ! But small independent business freight cargo; say farmers goods may gain its liking ! Heck turn it into a offshore casino and it will do a bang up in earnings ! Agreed, traveling around the rim roads past Bangers, Hua Hin, Chumpion, Surit Thani, Nikon Si is a real long stretch, it will be a good ferry system if it pays off. Commercial goods ticket bookings will have to be its bread and butter ! Need several deep water ports to stop and unload ! Koh Samui to mainland needs a larger hauler like this one ! Lines waiting for vehicle ferries down there are so long !
Great travel reports Lucas ! Be safe and don't push it too hard on the bikes ! Many more good riding days to come !
God Bless all the Pattaya folks struggling under these hard COVID times ! Vee is a great humanitarian with a good caring giving heart !

Just a couple notes. Japanese ferries are the nicest way to travel around japan if you are not in a rush. Lots of food and vending machines and suites with baths and so much more. The price is very low compared to cruise ships but the accommodations are fantastic. I hope that Thailand uses that model and provides Thai and western cuisine options and vendeterias. It would be a big winner if done properly. It is not a cruise but it is definitely not a ferry. Maybe a feruise. Thanks for the video.
