In 1969 Zeppelin were still playing small clubs and universities in the UK. I saw them in April 1969 in a hall behind a pub called The Roundhouse in Dagenham, Essex that held about 300 people. The stage was tiny and about two feet high! This was before the second album so their set was most of the first album plus Killing Floor, Train Kept a- Rollin' and Moby Dick. Imagine being a couple of feet away from Zeppelin, the noise was extraordinary. I remember Plant being tall and thin with wild corkscrew hair and Page's guitar hanging down to his knees, I'd never seen anyone playing guitar like that before. They were supported by the wonderful Blodwyn Pig. Six months later the second album came out and the rest is history. Those were great days.
In the 70s audiences were often invited by the TV staging companies..The invites often had no idea of what was in front of them and would dress in formal clothing and sit dead still..

So very different from this performance. By then, Jimmy had a wall of Marshall stacks. JPJ also played a Hammond organ for a few songs. Bonham had a few more kit, including double bass drums. Robert played the Garden's massive sound system like an instrument, using more silence to allow the room to echo back like a huge cavern. It was an exciting, mind-blowing experience and no one sat on their hands. I was so blessed to see them 3 times. All four of them are off the chart talented. Plant's vocal command is like no other, he plays his instrument beyond a master level. They are/were the best
"... We got together for the first time and we'd never played together. Someone asked if we knew any songs that we could all play. We knew. Someone said train kept a rolling all night long. They had all played that before. We started playing... And the sound was unbelievable!"- John Paul Jones on led Zeppelin's first session
They had to think all hell was coming down in the midst of this, they're facial expressions or lack there of - says it all, haha. You can also tell by the audio cutout at times that Zep had the amps cranked into decibel ranges they probly never experienced before or after this episode.
John Paul Jones is sooo underrated. His stability supported the entire band and certainly allowed for Page and Plant to go off script while allowing Bonham freedom to get into his earth shattering fills and propel the band like none other during these early days of what would become Heavy Metal.
They sounded best live when JPJ was playing keys. No Quarter live is Zep at their best. He was, of course, among rock's best bassist, but in my opinion Page's propensity to layer so many guitar tracks left a listener, familiar with the studio track, wondering where the middle went.
"Jonesy" as they called him didn't even receive enough credit from his own bad. Treated him like the bastard half-sibling. I love L.Z. but it's the truth! On the other hand, "Jonsey' didn't have the big ego that needed the back patting so the dynamics of the band seemed to work, I suppose. Just a fan's humble opinion.
Jimmy was an animal back then. Using all modern sounds, technology, and expressive expedience's of that time to drill new ideas into the music of that time. Jimmy was a major player of then, and now, into todays musical influence. His best performances were much better than anyone else's. And oh yeah, Plant, Jones, and Bonham were stunning performers as well.
@@AnitaBarneycastle Disagree strongly. Led Zeppelin were always more than the sum of the four members. It was never a vehicle for just one of them. This video easily demonstrates my point. Peace & Love.
@@nwr99nwr99 Jimmy was the accomplished studio musician at the time of the Zeppelin formation. He played in the Yardbirds and was known by many successful bands of his time. He had the most experience, by far. However, Bonzo proved to be megalithic in his own right too. And of course, Robert had the pipes from 1969 through 1972. He had surgery in 1973 to remove polyps of his vocal chords and could never regain his voice completely. ✌ ☮ out!

I don't know how you can watch this and not see how their the best band to ever produce something called Rock Music. Improvisation, artistry, super tight, everything you needs in this.
Richard Ayala..... what on earth are ye talking about...... “ punk rock “ ???? Punk came 15 yrs later and was hopelessly idiotic imbeciles who could barely strung 3 chords together !
Communication Breakdown, according to Johnny Ramone himself, is indeed the original source for the Ramones down stroking, up-tempo style, and Bonham's propulsive drumming is part of that. Led Zeppelin had influence in all kinds of unexpected places ...
Are we trying to prove Zep’s credibility by talking about punk rock and the Ramones? Please don’t waste your time. The dinosaurs outlived the upstarts.
I saw them in 1971 at Dorton Arena in Raleigh NC..I got up near the stage with my camera and told the security guys I was with The News And Observer and they the me through..I stood right behind John Paul Jones and took pictures..He was playing "Your time is gonna Come" on the B3 and playing bass pedals..I was 15 and very humbled and impressed..JPJ very amazing musician..
Glad I have the “ear” to hear all of this. Has taken me years to develop it and here I am listening to the absolute best. Omg what can I say . Can’t spend your time doing much better than engaging this epic mind blowing phenomena.
When Jimmy said that "HE GAVE EVRYTHING HE HAD FOR LED ZEPPELIN" he wasn't joking, this vid is proof that no matter who, what where, when etc., Jimmy and the band are giving it all for what looks like a less than stellar arena/audience.
Imagine when a few years passed and they became an epic phenomenon ... how that audience must have had deep regret not to appreciate what they had seen unfold - up close and personal.
1969 been together about a year. Robert Plant being the definition of Rock God, Bonham being the definition of Rock drummer, Jimmy being the definition of Rock guitar wizard, and JPJ the definition of brilliantly gifted silent bass player in the background. Damn, these guys were good😍😍😍😍
Jimmy è un talento puro, incredibile veramente 👋👋👋 anche usare l arco di violino e non rovinare le corde della chitarra! Questo modo di suonare è assolutamente geniale, nessuno sarà mai come lui.
People say Robert in the early days of Led Zeppelin was the best, but that's debatable. I liked his change too. Yeah, he hit higher notes in the early days, but he always sounded good to me. I don't know man I just love the band!
There may have been a change. But there's room for both on the top shelf. 51 years old and I just got a new zeppelin shirt off eBay. Play them while driving the new truck all the time. Love sitting at the light next to younger soccer mom's, making them regret their life's decisions.
If all of their shows had been recorded and filmed, there'd be even MORE arguing about when Led Zeppelin was still "good." 🙄 Apparently, some people think they were good "only" until 1972. And then Robert's voice was unreliable. Or Jimmy's playing was sloppy, or.... Whatever. I've watched the videos of their shows from the mid 70s, and still think they're amazing! Yet the comments are all like "look how hard Jimmy is sweating, he's on smack!" and "Robert's voice cracked! It's because of the flu he had in 1972! His voice was never the same after that one time he sneezed!" 👍🤣 I'll take more Led Zeppelin videos, but I won't read the comments. Not worth it. These guys rocked hard no matter when. 👍
The audience has never seen, felt, touched, tasted, or heard anything remotely close to what actually is before them. They are dumbfounded in amazement. And to think how much more was to come . At this time the Mighty Led Zeppelin had it together. When they were still striving to be the greatest
Oh my God such absolute uninhibited genius.this is the best of the best forever.jimmy and Plant you know all of them are tapping their collective unconscious together tribally right in front of our eyes musically! I’m on fire listening to this gif!!!!

Gotta love the revolving door prop on the set! So avant garde and totally fits with the hard rock of Led zeppelin! Hahahaha j/k
Absolutely agree. Good one.
They sounded best live when JPJ was playing keys. No Quarter live is Zep at their best. He was, of course, among rock's best bassist, but in my opinion Page's propensity to layer so many guitar tracks left a listener, familiar with the studio track, wondering where the middle went.
Absolutely
"Jonesy" as they called him didn't even receive enough credit from his own bad. Treated him like the bastard half-sibling. I love L.Z. but it's the truth! On the other hand, "Jonsey' didn't have the big ego that needed the back patting so the dynamics of the band seemed to work, I suppose. Just a fan's humble opinion.
Yeah he actually wrote the more intricate riffs eg Good Times Bad Times
Thanks, James Barnes, for uploading this. It's such a treasure! I had never seen it before, only in photos.
Zeppelin is Jimmy Page

✌ ☮ out!
@@AnitaBarneycastle JPJ was also an equally in demand studio musician and arranger of music at the same time as JP.
But hey Anita, we're on the same page (excuse the pun lol) here. We both love LZ.
Whole lotta love 🕊
OUTSTANDING!!! THANK YOU!!!
The audience didn’t realize they were witnessing rock history being made. They were witnessing the future of rock-n-roll!
Boham is a beast on drums!
pmcllc you see how he could barely walk on stage 😂, then just smashes it from that point out.
of course he is !
That's awesome look at the brass orchestra watching Page saw through his guitar strings!
Bonham
Hes a rare drummer that puts on a show- I like Blondies drummer in this way.
Damn Robert’s voice in the early days was incredible
Mike Jim dude was 19-20 and sounded like he was 30
Robert's best vocal performance was, clearly, their first album. Although it was still great afterwards, man, I kinda wish the later songs had *this* voice.
@@jacobshirley3457 lo hubieran tenido si se hubiera cuidado su voz y su estilo de vida no fuese tan perdido.

Early Zeppelin..... much love for these guys!
I share this one so much,i can,t get enough of this great one i loveeeeee it.They were here incredible incredible great.Chapeau.
This was epic footage of Zeppelin!! One of the best live performances I seen by them!! 🤘🤘🤘🤘
I think the fact that four dudes with such energy and godly musical talents standing in front of a bunch of unpleasured people just makes it that much cooler of a video
They did give them a good applause though.
It’s a fucking dumpster fire honestly…but so great
Audiences weren't the same back then. The Beatles and Elvis were the only ones sending the chicks into conniption fits.
The Turtles stomped all over LZ
Even a ballpark peanut vendor yelling "Get yer hot nuts!!!" Couldn't get those zombies off their asses.
That was so fun to watch. I loved the interaction between the vocal and guitar.
This is HISTORY, people !!!!!!!!

The isolated camera shots of the people in the crowd was hilarious. Some of them looked like they're old enough to be my grandparents. Awesome!
True masterpiece of epic talent, raw and no filters, synthesizers, digital. I saw them in Philadelphia. Wonderful and truly sad that hungry, raw music talent seems less available.
Wow the outfits!!! I have been looking and looking for this clip and all I had to do was type in Led Zeppelin live 1969.. yeesh.
Or buy the Led Zep DVD
i love how the audience could not see what they were seeing. history in the making.
Nobody laid it down as HEAVY as Zeppelin...........EVER!
jerry suzuki this would be considered heavy in 2020, so one can only imagine what it was in 1969
It is heavy, but listen to Humble Pie Live Winterland 1973 album. You’ll like.
@@scottrgood- What a fantastic band! Marriot and Frampton in the same group? Phenomenal stuff
Did you hear Blue Cheer? 200 watt Marshalls... Wide open...
Fo Sho!
Glad I grew up in the 60's & 70's no one can ever experience such an awesome time.
What a video!! You guys hear John Paul Jones on this! Freaking awesome. You can hear his technique and Bass Kung Fu soooo very well. I don't know how you can watch this and not see how their the best band to ever produce something called Rock Music. Improvisation, artistry, super tight, everything you needs in this.

Well said!
Four Gods of Rock 🐉🎸🥁🎹🎤 ! What a perfection!
Awesome quality!
This is the most frickin bad ass version of Dased and confused I have seen, heard.
Truly epic!
Bonzo's punk rock drum beats! Absolutely stunning ahead of it's time for drummer's of all genre of rock.
Pink rock? They wish could be this good
Not to mention that he was a fucking metronome
Greatest band of all time
Better than The Beatles? LMAO
@Ascension Astrology With Raina Moon yes I have to say they were better than the beatles just heavier and more versatile.
Queen and the Who.
to see them around this time would have been absolutely incredible.
The whole show is like Marty McFly going haywire at the end of Johnny B Goode at the prom, right down to the audience reaction
Nailed it.
Your kids are going to love it
😝😝😝😝🤪
Just the way it was back then.
People sat and actually listened.
Corse now they just point there phone at the stage.
The best thing to come out of 2020 - This awesomeness of Zep popping up in my feed!
Thank you Thank you🌟
The best forevermore❣️
Glad I have the “ear” to hear all of this. Has taken me years to develop it and here I am listening to the absolute best. Omg what can I say . Can’t spend your time doing much better than engaging this epic mind blowing phenomena.
This is the original all imposters have tried to imitate for 50+ years now.
Amazing drums, unbelievable on that set. Amazing group!
When Jimmy said that "HE GAVE EVRYTHING HE HAD FOR LED ZEPPELIN" he wasn't joking, this vid is proof that no matter who, what where, when etc., Jimmy and the band are giving it all for what looks like a less than stellar arena/audience.
pretty boring sorry.

nao duram 1 show😅
Dazed and Confused gave me chills.
Robert Plant was only 21 years old here, truly impressive
I was just 10 years old lol. It's scary the passage of time.
you sure he wasn't 20?
John Bonham was also only 21. Raw talent.
Bonham spinning that drumstick like a boss. Best band ever.
That early lion's roar of Plant... ❤
Imagine when a few years passed and they became an epic phenomenon ... how that audience must have had deep regret not to appreciate what they had seen unfold - up close and personal.
This was incredible!! Just wish I'd been old enough to have been there! 🎸🎸🎸
The audience had no clue what was happening here, I would have been blown out of my seat.
1969 been together about a year. Robert Plant being the definition of Rock God, Bonham being the definition of Rock drummer, Jimmy being the definition of Rock guitar wizard, and JPJ the definition of brilliantly gifted silent bass player in the background. Damn, these guys were good😍😍😍😍
Class, style, extreme talent, and no tattoos.
You know the determining factor of a good band: No tattoos
No curse words either-not in lyrics or between song banter. Anyone else notice this about Led Zep throughout their career?
@@Johnny-lr5jt Oh wait you guys are serious. I was under the assumption that this was some ironic joke.
Johnny you’re young huh
@@Johnny-lr5jt LOL. Yup. "Fluck" was about as close to cursing he ever did
Jimmy è un talento puro, incredibile veramente 👋👋👋 anche usare l arco di violino e non rovinare le corde della chitarra! Questo modo di suonare è assolutamente geniale, nessuno sarà mai come lui.
Just WOW 😲 That raw sound and attack is incredible.
@@donavonrobbins1908 COOL MAN!

Cool
1975 got my first Zeppelin album, the 4th one, then made it my life's mission to get the rest, still listening and lovin them today in 2001.
More of their shows should had been filmed.
All of them
If all of their shows had been recorded and filmed, there'd be even MORE arguing about when Led Zeppelin was still "good." 🙄
Apparently, some people think they were good "only" until 1972.
His voice was never the same after that one time he sneezed!" 👍🤣
I'll take more Led Zeppelin videos, but I won't read the comments. Not worth it. These guys rocked hard no matter when. 👍
@@endokrin7897 But here you are, commenting on a comment you won't read....

Thanks for posting......it makes it seem like all of us are just past the curtain, watching history happen.
The big heavy rolling combos in Dazed an CONFUSED Bonzo's sound is uniquely his own!!
Never getting a chance to catch Zepplin live , I can handle listening to these jams day and night. God bless John Bohnham
That's so nice of that audience to politely applaud like that.
They weren't moving their hands. Canned applause?
