I was just out of the Army when I started seeing his work...absolutely fascinated by it...wished I could do that. Then I found out he's a blues fanatic like me. I started collecting all his work...and I'm a better person for it all.
It seems to me that Crumb (and the underground comic genre) is popular mostly because he is honest. He illustrates all aspects of his personality. Fascinating.
what a great couple, he is so comfortable in her shade. not only on stage i guess. I imagine her endless talking and enthausiasm in daily life while he's mumbling his remarks too.
I love R. Crumb, he has managed to be a REAL artist, without selling out, and now he has REAL money, thanks to his financially astute wife! Also, they are ex-pats JUST in time? He told her "we must grow old gracefully", clearly she ignored him! But, they are my favorite couple on Earth! Great post!!
I grew up on Zap comix and kitchen sink, but now I think his best shit is the serious stuff, like the blues men series, or his stuff with bukowski- pure art
R. Crumb is a creative genius, no doubt. I'd love to know what Robert thinks of John Lennon's cartoon line drawings, especially the ones John did before his fame when he was in school... John's school time stuff fascinated me because nobody was doing stuff like that then but many did later on...
I prayed in church today for the salvation of Mr. Crumb. I have never seen anyone that is so lost. I know what he's talking about growing up Catholic. But Jesus isn't Catholic. His offer of salvation is open to all.
I like their interaction here, they prop each other up. Most couples who've been together for over 30 years can't stop sniping at each other. But these two make an effort to put each other in a positive light. In the 1994 movie she was great, but sounded exactly like him. They look great now and seem very comfortable with Aline in the more central role. wow sure is weird talking about people I don't even know lol!
@sangredelic heheh... but your right y'know. They come across as very supportive of each other. He stated in that 1994 Crumb film that he didn't love anybody except for his daughter. Well, if he doesn't love Aline he sure is fond of her. Another thing, I knew plenty of women in the 80's who were NOT offended by his explicit work. I remember the "Girls Clubhouse" one had them all laughing. Aline wasn't the only one who "got it".
He's still in France, and supposedly he tossed his fedora over a cliff because he didn't like it being connected with him after the Crumb movie or something like that.
@25:50 I think many men have elaborate, twisted, non standard, sexual fantasies. Things they would never share with their lovers. Thoughts that might disgust, or offend or scare them. Personally I believe strongly in internal freedom. I am willing to regulate my public behavior, with in reason, in the interest of public order but when it comes to my fantasy life the gloves are off. I am very resistant to people trying to tell me what to think or dream about.
Psychology shows that's why fantasies are fantasies and it's actually very common for many to have something that would make them an outcast humiliated etc. It's actually a fraction of a percent that act on them irl.
These guys are living proof of the common idea that the most interesting thing about most artists is their art. It's not that they're prohibitively boring, just pretty pedestrian. Aline is basically his Linda McCartney. Her story-telling is pretty mundane, not in the sense that harvey Pekar's is. Harvey's is somehow compelling - Aline's isn't in my opinion. Crumb obviously has lots of broad and deep insight, but also some cultural blind spots. His love of most ANY old music and NO new is lame.
aline is annoying. her work is a wash. obviously their relationship has been very good for him. the artist/muse relationship can be very dangerous for both. theyve made it work their own way, for quite a while now----more power to the both of them.
R I P ALINE CRUMB one in a billion
Being a cancer survivor, I was horrified and saddened to discover that she died of pancreatic cancer.
I was just out of the Army when I started seeing his work...absolutely fascinated by it...wished I could do that. Then I found out he's a blues fanatic like me. I started collecting all his work...and I'm a better person for it all.

I’m in love with these two. Warms my heart
Totally
RIP Aline
This is great! Such a wonderful couple, you can feel the love
what a great couple, he is so comfortable in her shade. not only on stage i guess. I imagine her endless talking and enthausiasm in daily life while he's mumbling his remarks too.
Love it!- R.C. is a great artist
They were/are an ultimate gift to one another.
Thanks a lot for posting this!
I just love Crumb...
Fascinating interview. Both of them are quite interesting and seem to be honest and unpretentious.
I've been reading Crumb since 1972, and Aline since right before they were married. So good to finally hear them talk at length .
I love R. Crumb, he has managed to be a REAL artist, without selling out, and now he has REAL money, thanks to his financially astute wife! Also, they are ex-pats JUST in time? I don't know how happy they are in France now, what with the nightmare that's unfolding there.
I hate when artists say well i had to pay the rent, when they do ads for funeral insurance !
Crumb is a lucky guy. I actually just fell in love with aline...
This is great! They both seem great. I always loved the way Robert talked and his description of things
I grew up on Zap comix and kitchen sink, but now I think his best shit is the serious stuff, like the blues men series, or his stuff with bukowski- pure art
Mystic funnies great too. And the pinup series.
They are so fun together!
Love 'em both. Were responsible for some of the best times of my life. They didn't know it though :-)
What is Aline famous for ? I'm certainly aware of Roberts famous work...anyone ?
She did underground comics from a female point of view. It was kind of a rare thing.
With Love :( :( RIP Aline :( :(
Thank you for posting this.
20:10 that is a great husband-wife exchange, "The art school didn't take…"
"-No, nothing." Good relationship.
Yes, let's make it so the cameras can't zoom in and display their artwork.
Blurry as hell, isn't it? What did they do...smear Vaseline on the lens??
I'm glad Crumb found Aline, a good mate for him. I still haven't met my Aline, but I hear he has an open marriage. J/k! R.
She's adorable.
Just like "Johnny Winter" the great ALBINO blues-rock guitarist, you couldn't imagine a more perfect archetype for the 60's generation R. "CRUMB"!
Lucky man.

When does Aline stop talking and when does Robert start talking?
So did Crumb come back to the States? When did he trade his fedora for a British cap?
He's still in France, and supposedly he tossed his fedora over a cliff because he didn't like it being connected with him after the Crumb movie or something like that.
LOVE IT ! ! ! ! ! :D
Robert Crumb, Urban Paranoia !
The Alines Talk
The interviewer has the exact same voice as Frank Oz.
Crumb really appreciate the 50's ..
"Honey-Bunch Kominski ? Yeah, that sounds like Robert Crumb ;-)
The hotel bolderado at the dark end of the hall. J. Prine.
I kind of see Bill Mauldin's Willie and Joe in Crumb's work.
robert crumb' invented his girlfreind ! !
I wrote a short story in which that actually happened - i.e. one of his fantasy women manifested into reality

her cosmetic surgeries look good. three face procedures... not too bad.
Pretty obvious that he's still smitten.
TIL don't call comedians 'comics' around Bob Crumb.

Wow, like 10-thousend gusy are not brain-dead ;-)
I prefer hentai
"We're like movie stars over here" - No Aline, Robert is the movie star, you're the hanger on. And you talk way too much.

She reminds me of Yoko Ono, always crowbarring her “art” into his work.
