@@BreakfastAllDayYour review was spot on. They shouldn’t have either given us more details or withheld more information. Definitely left the film perplexed. I still enjoyed the film. The highlight was definitely Dan Stevens and his pronunciation of “Gretchen” 😂
One of the reasons I love listening to you both (and value your opinions even when I disagree) is that you have the humility as professional film critics to flat out just say I DIDN'T GET IT IT CONFUSED ME, instead of trying to imbibe some pseudo-intellectual hubbub jargon just to save face. That adds a huge level of credibility that so many film critics I follow, or once followed, do not have :)
After seeing it I’m on the “I didn’t get it” side, not that stuff wasn’t explained, it was just communicated poorly and the overal reveals we’re messy and not very engaging. Kind of felt like I was waiting for it to end
Spoilers: This movie lost me at the mid way point. I was unsure if this was supposed to be camp because Dan Stevens character is acting overtly sinister and the parents are either cartoonishly dumb or evil? The cop subplot was weird and adding more lore than was needed. Dan Stevens exposition dumps do not solve that this film is convoluted. The creature, it’s origins, and purpose in relation to Gretchen were confusing. Dan Stevens purpose about pro creation in a honey moon suite were confusing. Beautiful film with some tense moments but I feel like so many film makers are leaning on horror because it’ll get green lit when they shouldn’t be making these movies. This probably should have been a psychological drama without a sci element.
The mythology is convoluted but by being so obtuse it actually creates a great environment for the ending themes. The two competing forces twisting Gretchen into this nightmare wind up facing only eachother while Gretchen brushes the whole thing off to save her sister. In the end I don’t think it matters much what crazy junk is going on, just that it drives change in the protagonist.
Cuckoo was good but still way more conventional than Singer's debut Luz which played at the Berlinale in 2018. i actually asked the director a question about the style at the press conference.
Hi guys. Talking about brutalism.... I am currently doing a PhD in the use of brutalism in sci-fi (as an architect, not a film major). Would either of you be willing to answer some questions I have as part of my research? Please and thank you!
@@BreakfastAllDay I finally saw it a couple of days ago. I understand your issues with the film. I found it a little too off-kilter and unclear for its own good, at points, but there is real quality to much of the film-making and some genuine scares, plus you have to give credit for the originality. I didn't like it as much as I hoped I would, but it's still a refreshing watch.
What confused me was alonzo on the right and Christie on the left. All your other videos are the other way around and this melted my brain for a good 45 seconds.
The movie treats it like a reveal, which shocked me because it's sooo obvious. These guys still shouldn't have said that in the review, though. They're notoriously awful at avoiding spoilers, which is baffling, it's really not that hard
I really don’t like when art house films become so much experimental that they really just aren’t enjoyable and actually belong as an installation at a museum or something.
Saw this at sxsw and its like i had a blast watching it and found it overall well made, entertaining, good performances. But i can agree at a point i was like I'm just lost on what this is going for
Pretty unnecessary to mention in the review the off-screen death of one character, since that is not fully revealed until late in the movie (even though we all assumed, I'm sure). It wasn't even necessary for the review.
For your news show you should try to find out why Honest Trailers has done recent films but never did Argylle, a film that Alonso really, really hated.
Stylistically transgressive sophomore offering that channels the best of the 80’s Central European Arthouse-horror tradition. Tilman Singer deliciously seeks to exorcise the historical sins of the Fatherland, subverting “traditional” takes on patriarchal nationalism, eugenics, and Nazi family values. Queer, stylish, and unapologetically fun- the third act feels like the surrogate child of Cronenberg and Michael Mann by way of Andrzej Żuławski. Hunter Schafer is FUCKING TRANSCENDENT…welcome to the genre, Jules.
I enjoyed the part where Dan Stevens literally turned to the camera to tell us how lucky we are to be experiencing this movie. Less a fan of Schafer whose line delivery sounded like it was being delivered phonetically by someone who doesn’t actually speak English. On the whole, this really lost me by the third act and just wouldn’t end.
Honestly even if a movie really takes me through the wringer to the point where I don’t know what happened by the end, I don’t mind! I’m not so obsessed with that, myself as an audience member I hate when movies spoon feed us what’s happening and it drives me nuts when people nowadays don’t like *any* movies if they’re not spoon fed answers. Take me for a ride and leave me befuddled but amazed at the end!
Well my friend, this movie is for you. I watched this Thursday night and I think get it but again I don't think I did.😂 It's definitely worth watching for the conversations alone.
I had a lot of fun with it. Lots of style and tension and plain old weirdness. The cast was very good. I didn't really have a problem with the plot, but maybe that's because I was forewarned and was probably paying closer attention. The guy who plays the Dad always plays a bad guy or someone untrustworthy. It's at the point where I'm not sure I'd believe hin in a nice guy role. In certain shots Hunter Schafer reminded me of Mila Jovovich, especially aroung the eyes.
What was not to get in the movie? I though it was great! The only thing that I don't think was mentioned in the movie was where the organization was getting money from aaaand I disliked that shooting stops in one scene to deliver a dramatic dialogue, but other than that I loved it.
From the first time I saw the trailer, I knew I'd be going to see this one. I'm in. Dan Stevens is usually making really eclectic and sometimes very odd choices, AND he's always working. An interesting combination. I'm a fan! I don't know Hunter Schafer, but I liked what I saw of her in the trailer. L:ooking forward to seeing this movie.
I'm glad I wasn't the only confused one! I also enjoyed the nod to 70's horrors, the set design, the De Palma-esq costumes, etc. Was a very fun movie! 😎
This movie is like a beautiful train, that wrecks. And then we time loop and see the wreck, again and again, each time worse than the last. I totally agree about the screaming noise.
Let Dan Stevens Be Weird! If you try to hang a movie on his looks alone, it’s a dull slog. If you let him be an oddball, or even better let his looks be partially menacing you’re going to at least get something interesting
Most A24 movies do a better job than this movie than explaining what's happening without beating you over the head. This movie can't figure out if it's a Cronenbergian body horror movie or an opaque Lynchian surrealist nightmare and it suffers badly for it.
@@BreakfastAllDay !!! SPOILER!! As much as an evil scientist that’s trying to protect an ancient species that has the ability to scream and disorient its prey in order to impregnate them with their offspring makes sense. 😂🤣😂🤣
I was very disappointed with this film🥲 I was sooo looking forward to it. I loved Singer's LUZ in 2019 and the trailer intrigued me but this let me down so bad (but not as much as Trap this month 😒)
Sounds like it had enough interesting elements to give it a shot. I’ve already booked tickets for Friday - excited!

yeah, i agree.

Steven’s is great in these roles. I caught up to Legion just after it was over, and that series really shows more of his range.
He can do it all! We loved him in Eurovision, too.

Me too, but FishJelly offers a good explanation, full of spoilers.
No spoilers, but then the first thing she says is that the main character's mom died, which is an important reveal in the movie.🤦♂️

Trust me… this is not a “museum installation” type of experimental.
Cinema should be experimeental otherwise it dies. There are far too many films that rely on storytelling instead of using the form.
I might or might not see this one based on this review 😬
lol, this is a campy paranormal thriller
Saw this and same. Wasn’t sure exactly what was going on but Dan Stevens. Cool needle drop too.
Saw cast listing show Gemma Chan and John Malkovich but they don’t appear.
Oh that's strange! Yes, they're nowhere in this.
@@BreakfastAllDayNPR said John Malkovich was supposed to play Dan Stevens’ role. I guess Gemma Chan was slated to play Jessica Henwick’s role.
Despite the movie being confusing, I'm here for all the Dan Stevens love since he's my tie for my number 1 movie crush (next to David Harbour)

Hunter Schafer in Euphoria mode again. Twentysummat playing a teenager.
