I don't know why, but when Grechen took off the wig and stared at cuckoo mama's eyes I thought cuckoo mama is her real mother and she kid of recognized her. I think that would be a great twist!
Nobody is mentioning the absorbed twin? The doctor notes Alma looks a lot like Beth. Alma absorbed her twin. What is she is only part-creature? My theory is that Alma is not really the Bird Lady’s daughter. She absorbed her twin amd so took part of her powers amd she is attracting her twin’s mother…
Saw this movie w/ my daughter last nite.. LOL.. “something is not right” is an understatement. We both left trying to put the disjointed puzzle pieces together. We liked the cinematic effects, the music was right up my alley, the sound effects were perfectly creepy, and there was some humor mixed in with the scary moments. I felt that too much stuff didn’t make sense. Like what’s up with all of the throwing up, even Gretchen threw up. Too many unanswered questions. Probably because of the editing. I left mentally exhausted trying to keep up with everything that was being thrown at us. Favorite scary scene.. the bike ride on the bike thru the woods… yikes! Nothing like a creepy hooded blond woman in a trench coat & sunglasses running after you in the dark woods 😳 All in all, I liked this film. I hit subscribe because I like your review & explanations. I’ll check back in with you guys often moving forward.
there's no direct explanation, but it's sort of like morning sickness that happens right after the Cuckoo impregnates the women ... and also maybe a call to how bird adults regurgitate food for Cuckoo chicks -- did that should have gone to their own chicks? idk, maybe that's a stretch
I love that Dan Steven is so handsome and has still been able to play many oddball rolls. So many handsome men get pigeon held into the leading man type
"Who are these simple people? And why are they gaslighting us? I'm tired of this shit." Nick I always enjoy your blunt viewpoint. Most definitely I will check this movie out. Especially since Marton Csokas, one of my favs, is acting in this film.
the flute thing is a reference to Pied Piper, because Stevens lures children away from their "parents" I think. Solid analysis, I missed the big picture, the movie is just so confusing.
I had never come across your channel and was expecting two dude-bros talking about this movie, so I was trying to brace myself anyway because I want to watch reviews of this movie. I guess I've been tarnished by one too many Quentin Tarantino movie reviewers. What a pleasant surprise to see I was wrong!
@nightangel3578 Not a direct reference unless the two auteurs are friends and being cheeky. Longlegs calls CUCKOO CUCKOO to 8-going-on-9 year old Lee at the beginning of the film.
This is the one movie that I want to watch before I continue your spoiler review. So..... I'll be back after I see it tonight! It looks like it's better than LongLegs and kind of right up my alley.
Lmaooo the French lesbian to the rescue 😂 I loved it. It wasn’t perfect, but I loved it. New favorite horror film of the year. I think it should be seen in theaters because of certain cinematic techniques, specifically sound that made the whole theater feel like we were caught in an earthquake. I think it did the Longlegs concept better, particularly when it comes to makeup and fear of the creature, Longlegs feels similar to this creature but I found Longlegs to be silly not scary, as did my theater which was cracking up every time Cage was on screen. No laughs from my theater at this one, and I think it’s bc the technical execution was better, it felt grounded and didn’t rely upon the tropiest trope of satanic worship. This felt real enough to believe and I appreciated the explanation wasn’t just the devil. It felt fresh, sinister and unexpected, unlike Longlegs where I saw the ending coming from minute 5. Longlegs felt like Mrs. Doubtfire w a mental disorder and a penchant for Satan. I think it also tackled family trauma in a much more visceral and deep way. The family dynamic and their treatment of Hunter’s character felt true to life and just as horrifying as the actual horror. This is the only movie of the year that managed to actually scare me, I think there are plenty of scares and this is unambiguously a horror thriller. Hunter and Dan were great, so were the supporting characters. The creature was complex as a character, even sympathetic, and as a metaphor for femininity under patriarchy. The way the father favors the new child and wife, who very much fit the heteronormative cis feminine ideal, even when it’s clear Hunter is in physical danger, really struck a chord for me and the director doesn’t shy away from the emotional brutality of abandonment and loss. Hunter’s performances in these scenes are Oscar-worthy. I think it was close to a perfect film from act 1-2 but it failed to stick the landing. They don’t explain (or at least my partner and I both missed this) what happens to several key characters which creates some logic issues. It also does feel like a bit too much exposition right at the end, I wish they threaded in more of the explanation in pieces instead of just dumping it. There is also one scene in particular involving a sort of shoot off that did feel slightly too campy - I think there are a couple of moments like this where the tone goes a bit too campy and while I love camp, 95% of the movie feels serious and grounded, so the camp elements feel accidental or perhaps lacking in the right execution. I also want to applaud the cinematography for giving us fresh aesthetics- somehow it makes white and beige interiors with fluorescent lighting look beautiful and evil. The visual style felt restrained yet dreamy and luxurious, and the camera techniques are also novel and really additive to the horror. Overall, I can forgive the sins of the ending bc this was my most satisfying horror film of the year, and unlike Longlegs, I felt this film had a lot more to say. I’d give it a 4/5 only because the ending didn’t deliver on all the greatness leading up to it. WATCH ITTTT!
LOL!! “Who are these simple people, and why are they gaslighting us? I’m so tired of that shit… My god…” (Rolls eyes & shakes head…) LOVE ITTTTT! 11:00
I think my new favorite horror subgenre is resort horror. I have to check and see if you have an Infinity Pool review. Both of these movies are set amongst beautiful scenery, meanwhile the experimentation and horrification of domestic roles lurks beneath. I love the last scene with the men holding guns at each other on the opposite side of the aisle (literally and figuratively) while the girls hug each other to safely. I've seen Tilman Singer's LUZ (which I can appreciate in hindsight as a thesis film) but am grateful for the relatively solid narrative this time around.
I don’t think theres any actual repetition, that’s just how it’s represented to the audience. I’m interpreting it as just some type of hypnosis or trance, since we never actually see or hear anything about time.
This director likes to use alternative editing styles (like in his LUZ where people are re-enacting a car accident and they occupy the present police station and past taxi cab). More narratively speaking...I don't know, but I like it. I like how some of the characters realize it but cannot escape the cuckoo siren song, like a bad dream loop that traps them. I'm guessing Resort Alpschatten isn't as technologically advanced as to have invented time travel.
when you are under that trance, you form the will to do something like run away or get a weapon and your mind sees you doing that, but your body doesn't move ... and then you snap back and realize you haven't moved?

Ok this sounds great! I’ll def check it out! As usual beautiful humans thanks for the hard work y’all put into this! This sounds like it’s creepy not scary I’m like y’all this is not terrifying
Okay, you two loony birds had me cracking up with all the bird puns in this video. It was a hoot! It's like you're birds of a feather, or something! If I had a nickel for every time I heard "mama bird" or "cuckoo bird lady" in this video! You even referred to someone " swooping in" to save someone 😂. This one was for the birds! BTW, I'm seeing the movie this Friday, so...I'll be in the front..PERCH, I guess? 😂😂😂
This is a movie I would need to watch again. It was much more entertaining than Longlegs, for sure. I was confused midway, but the performances in this film were outstanding; I didn't care to understand the plot.
I felt the over metaphor for Cuckoo was weak. Yes the brood parasite is a metaphor for the title but what was the overall message for the movie? Fuck your father and his new wife? The parents aren’t all that terrible of people? Fuck the biological mother who wants to see her biological daughter? Or is it fuck the rules I just want to runaway and be a bit of a Brat… and abduct my half sister??? I don’t think any of that was the metaphor and not all horror movies need to have a metaphor but there’s nothing in “Cuckoo” that is a hook either, the mother isn’t going to stalk Gretchen to the ends of the earth to get her child back for obvious reason. They explained way too much of the plot to not have a hook or a metaphor for the movie. And then people claim the movie goes bonkers in the 3rd act with a shootout and everything… well then “Maxxxine” beat you to it because “Maxxxine” really goes bonkers in the 3rd act even referencing the ending of Beverly Hills Cop with the mansion raid. Like I don’t hate Cuckoo but I get the mediocre reviews. It doesn’t have a satisfying ending, it doesn’t hook me in with a possibility of the story continuing and it has a pretty flat message/metaphor infact even with the interesting concept, the movie was just flat.
I honestly expected this movie to be bloody/gory and more disturbing, so I left a little disappointed! Same thing with Long Legs, but maybe I should stop watching trailers so much and just go into movies without expectations so I’m not so disappointed haha. Still loved y’all’s review and energy, subscribed! 😊😊🤍
@@Bighuss83 fair enough haha I think Long Legs was definitely more iconic and memorable (both the character and movie) I just went in with different expectations than what I got but that’s my fault lol 🤗
I think if you see an indie horror movie going for a big box office, it's usually going to be a trailer that tries it's best to portray it as a mainstream horror movie when it is actually an artsy slow burn
@@theamaeve8175 Yessir. This is an example of a very valuable insight that people should listen to and understand. However you came to this conclusion yourself, it is in other people’s best interest to take what you said seriously and try to understand it/digest why it is this way. It can save a lot of time for anybody reading this comment to learn this reality now instead of realizing it years or even decades in the future. This is just the way it is and there is a reason for it. It’s not just senseless greed or anything to take personal. It’s just what you need to do to appeal to the public and sell your work (and there are people above you who will have control of the way your movie is marketed too). After you have successfully done this and established yourself, then you have more freedom to explore your art as something unique from the mainstream without it being shutdown or smothered in the crib. There is a lot I could continue going on about regarding this but I just felt the need to point this out as one of only a few random comments I occasionally come across that is actually important and not just the usual chatter, because however small this idea might seem, earnestly listening and considering its implications can give a person genuinely valuable insight into life and how the world around them actually functions and why. It’s a small thought that packs a punch and it ripples far beyond just trailers for upcoming films.
The movie was pretty nice. The main character development into caring about the sister by the end was nice. Finally get some character work in a film. Dont get why she stole from her own job tho, that's kinda crazy 😂.
I just left the theater seeing this. I couldn’t wait to see it actually and was very pleased with the film. I had no idea it would be that twist. I am not sure, but I was under the impression that the momma bird was Gretchen’s mom. I don’t know why I assumed that. Perhaps the long stare. Anyhow, I enjoyed it.
It was hard to find a woman in a trench coat, a house dress and a head scarf scary. I wish she had looked more like creature or something. I felt like this had allot of potential with a little pay off.
This sounds amazing, I like Hunter Schafer but boy, she does not look like a 17 year old at all. Why not just get a younger actress or make the character older?? There are plenty of 20 somethings who still live at home, ha.
I think her being 17 was because she was still under control of her parents. If she was 18+, she would have done her own thing. Also it's implied (and im not sure if I'm remembering right) when the father sells the house that he's acting as custodian for her and put it in an investment account for her. If she was of age, he would no longer be custodian and she would have full control of her inheritance
The trailer looked great, fun casting, but it's getting so many mixed reviews I don't know what to think. Neon is killing it this year regardless, so good for them.
Neon is doing really great with the trailers compared to many other horror movies I thought both Cuckoo and Longlegs had great trailers. So many horror movie trailers have been showing too much this year.
I do agree… here is a lot of questions about the story…. He sags do not know or hey only know part of the plan? Did Konig want want Gretchen to be impregnated too or not. At first, he wanted to protect her, but after she found out, he did? And Tricia, hey wanted to? The boyfriend was in on the plan? If they want o repopulate, why do they invite more women? And I would seem strange to let the Cuckoo women on the loose. Have to see this movie again. But this and Longlegs, I like the effort for doing something different, but not sure if the stories worked.
From the trailer, I thought it was somehow gonna tie back to some kind of nazi experiments way back when, since it takes place in the alps, and there was gonna be some leftovers from experiments back then or something lol. They did a good enough job with trailer though to invite speculation.
THUMBS Up, but whoaaa guys I’m still a little confused about this movie. It seems like this movie is very busy! Hmmmm I’m glad that you mentioned the women vomiting (I can’t stand it), so I will NOT be watching this one. THANKS so much guys you are very much appreciated here. ❤
Wow! First time I don’t agree with Fish Jelly 😳 I have to say I left disappointed. I wanted it to be an insane asylum movie, never expected any creatures. It all started out so promising- the scene on the bike with the runner in the distance by moonlight was great. As soon as the creature aspect entered, the film went down hill from there for me. I couldn’t figure out what decade it was until I saw the white iPhone cord. I also generally tune out at the last quarter of all films when the “battle” scenes begin. The library shootout went on for way too long, wish I had counted bullets. Done complaining lol
I enjoyed it, but also thought it was going to be more of an abduction plot or maybe she is put into an asylum due to what she is seeing/experiencing at the resort?! I was also annoyed by the silly gunplay by the 2 male leads who had no aim!! 😅🎉 I am hovering between a 2.5 and 3 rating. Thanks gentlemen for another fun and colorful review! 😍
This seems creepy like the movie a cure for Wellness. I Wonder if you guys seen that? That movie was weird and trippy in a good way and not what you expect
A parasitic creature humanoid that you find is moderately low in horror terms 😅Looks like the movie gets a range of opinions and emotions on its offering - including some "gaslighting" that Nick chided them for too😉😀
Was late to the game and just finished watching it! I think it was ok just a lot of moving parts and only some of them hit. The story was definitely unique but as a viewer I didn’t feel like I was figuring out the plot fast enough before they threw in something else that left me even more confused 😂by the end of it I just didn’t really care and nothing made me root for the characters enough so the “happy “ending was just kinda meh for me lol
I didn't even finish the movie. The trailer made it seem like a wacky suspence film with a sense of humor. Instead it was a meh , by the books creature feature.
...idk if its on my end but the review for this movie and "The Instigators" would crash my phone whenever i tried to watch for the first couple hours after i see the upload. I would hope it's not affecting you guys views.
This movie is so bad. I think this movie would’ve worked better as a X-Files episode and not a feature length film. I’m still confused as to why this is considered a horror movie because it’s not scary at all. Also it really doesn’t make sense. If Gretchen’s step mother was impregnated by one of the creatures on her Honeymoon why did they let her travel back to the US? How did they know she would return with the creature’s offspring? Or if she would live at all? Also the creatures are not threatening at all. They actually seem to be pretty controlled and seem to listen to the human “researchers”. Now that I’m thinking about it why are the scientists so fascinated with these creatures? Unless I missed something all they do is make shrieking noises that cause humans to become disoriented for a short time but that’s it. How is this special? You can literally disorientate humans with just regular loud noises or idk one of the many drugs available to scientists and doctors. You really don’t need some supernatural creature to do whatever this is. Also that’s not what Cuckoo birds do!!! Yes they lay their eggs in other bird’s nest BUT they don’t come back for them!!! Cuckoos do this in hopes that their offspring will be favored by the “host” and that the host will neglect their own offspring, causing them to die, thus eliminating competition for resources for the Cuckoo birds.
She said to the German guy “mom’s dead” then threw the wig during the standoff. It would make sense that the father had resentment to Gretchen because she didn’t turn out the way he expected as one of the creatures. I think he had to lie that her mother was “dead” because it was time for another mating season for the creatures and now her mother was the mother bird to pass it along. If the father had his honeymoon with Alma’s mom there, I can see how he would’ve had his honeymoon with Gretchen’s mom and it not working bc their experiments weren’t strong enough yet. I think that the message that Gretchen told to the sister was also closure for herself in a way with knowing that her mom is actually passed but able to look towards having an improved relationship with her sister. The nurse was also explaining that this bird was coming back for its offspring. I’m not sure if this was unprecedented, but I was wondering why she was so focused on Gretchen and not Alma as far as chasing her down. Also when the runaway humanoid was about to put Gretchen in a transsexual she paused and the German guy had to put her back in focus. I wonder if they had a connection bc Gretchen is a “failed” bird or something.
“Who are these simple people and why are they gaslighting us?”
Made me laugh out loud. That’s a great line, I have to use it in regular life.
I don't know why, but when Grechen took off the wig and stared at cuckoo mama's eyes I thought cuckoo mama is her real mother and she kid of recognized her. I think that would be a great twist!
I thought it was a male character that I had missed and/or forgotten about!!
😮🎉
I thought the same thing, I think it would have made this movie better cuz it wasn't it for me. Seriously disappointing
I think so too! I think there’s a lot of things in the movie i interpreted to support this theory!!!
I still question that possibility. Gretchen’s mothers death is shrouded in mystery and both girls are asking her to come visit or get Gretchen.
I assumed so
I really like you guys a lot. I come here after every movie I watch and love watching you guys talk about them. Thank you.

Stepmom. I feel sorry for her. Fuck the dad.

I enjoyed long legs, but this was horrible and very boring
LOVE Hunter, glad she's finally getting more interesting leading roles
The movie was pretty nice. The main character development into caring about the sister by the end was nice. Finally get some character work in a film. Dont get why she stole from her own job tho, that's kinda crazy 😂.
What’s not to get?
Where is the soundtrack. The music was great!
Momma bird was the mother of the young woman who escaped at the start of the movie.
I just watched it,can someone explain it to me, as I had trouble working out what was going on lol 😮
They rent out the rooms cuz they need the money😅
Really wanted to like this one but left disappointed. Did not enjoy this at all
Unrelated ; I just saw this movie called “something in the water” 🦈I believe it came out recently! PLEASE REVIEW
Oh boy. The faces aren’t giving me hope 😂
Strangely enough, I didn't know her age and I thought she played it off well. How old is she in the real world?
Tbf she was like 21 during the filming of the film
I think her being 17 was because she was still under control of her parents. If she was 18+, she would have done her own thing. Also it's implied (and im not sure if I'm remembering right) when the father sells the house that he's acting as custodian for her and put it in an investment account for her. If she was of age, he would no longer be custodian and she would have full control of her inheritance
@@theamaeve8175 she is so talented
I'm excited for this
I’m tired of them gaslighting us too.
Thanks for another great review, guys.
I think the movie is somehow in between elevated horror and action horror. The sentiments are strong but so are the action scenes at the end.
The trailer looked great, fun casting, but it's getting so many mixed reviews I don't know what to think. Neon is killing it this year regardless, so good for them.
I will never understand why people base what they watch or don't watch entirely on what strangers online say.
Neon is doing really great with the trailers compared to many other horror movies I thought both Cuckoo and Longlegs had great trailers. So many horror movie trailers have been showing too much this year.
@brbaic9364 if the industry is getting my money I don't want to feel like I've wasted my time.
@@brbaic9364 do you know how expensive movie theaters are now??? I ain't trynna waste money on a crappy movie 😂
You’re saying “good for them”. Why do You care about millionaire’s company?
💕Thank You!!!💕
I do agree… here is a lot of questions about the story….
Dan Steven's is in I'm Your Man, and he speaks fluent German in the film. He can handle a German persona pretty well. It's pretty good movie.
just got back from watching CUCKOO and you lads cleared up a lot! Thanks.
Yassss I just came out the theater seeing this I live being able to see movies the day before release
This was quite thrilling
I feel like it’s going to have the same vibe as “Infinity Pool”
I found it pretty straightforward. Dan Stevens is always a treat.
I didn't find this movie to be particularly good. A lot of people like it though, so maybe I'm missing something.
I liked this movie a good bit, just creepy enough but I agree that it left a few questions unanswered
Hmmmm
I’m glad that you mentioned the women vomiting (I can’t stand it), so I will NOT be watching this one.
THANKS so much guys you are very much appreciated here. ❤
Birds feed their babies by regurgitation. Hence the vomiting.
@@jay-dubb.dubb.68 agree on your rating, and yes I expected more of an involuntary patient plot
💕Alma Means Soul.💕
💕Just Saying.💕
I haven’t seen this answered, but what happened to the dog? Like…I definitely have lots of questions but that’s number 1
This seems creepy like the movie a cure for Wellness. I Wonder if you guys seen that? That movie was weird and trippy in a good way and not what you expect
Love that movie
2/5 only because the mad scientist was fine 😍 them blue eyes 😮💨 other than that movie was trash
Trash is right
Yea I didn’t like it :(
Oh good! I see positive comments here so I’ll be back for the spoilers after I see the movie! Marked safe 😂
You guys should review Kneecap!
Saw this at the Sydney Film Festival. Lobed it
*loved
Same! Looks like we’re the only ones.
@incognitoyo8606 the short film they played before cuckoo was brilliant too
I didn't even finish the movie.
I am CUCKOO for good hair" both facial and head!! Also cuckoo for you Fellas Reviews!✨❤️✨🧡✨💛✨💚✨💙✨💜💖✨💓😽😻
Guys, please review the comedy "Babes" which I watched by mistake. It has one of the most outrageous openings i bave ever seen.
The Omen scene, too 😂
♥️
I gave it a 6.5/10. Was objectively good (good acting & cinematography) but not my type of movie
🖤🖤🖤
Just saw it
The trailer was better than the movie
I like how that character’s name was Trixie and you all keep calling her Beatrix 🤣 something with an X… One of those…
😂
This movie was lame and a drag. Could’ve faired well as a Supernatural episode. Nothing more.
Agreed
🥸🃏⚡
