Yup. Right on the money. I enjoyed it sort of, but was lost as to what the hell was underlying all the parts. Had to see what the Fish Jelly guys made of it with all their spoilers. And I don't think I am a particularly stupid moviegoer. I just didn't catch on. Your temperate review was what I experienced. You're the best. Thanks.
Definitely a movie that thrives on a second watch. At first glance it didn’t seem fully realized to me either but on repeat viewings i love it more and more and it becomes more coherent and interesting. The connection between animal preservation and controlling women’s bodies made for really unique commentary on how women can be seen as just childbearing vessels. I think this movie works best if you just embrace the bizarreness and fun of it all without worrying about getting everything answered. Great review!
This definitely feels like a multiple watch type of movie! I enjoyed Longlegs much more the second time around and I'm a fan of Tilman's first film, Luz, so I'm excited to see Cuckoo again.
personally i loved it, i got very strong ‘phenomena’ vibes from the film which is great. also thank you for recognizing the influences at play, i see a lot of people who (to no fault of theirs) are coming into the film expecting a traditional american horror experience and that’s not the case. cuckoo is so deeply engrained in the fundamentals of euro horror from the 80’s (and so is singers first film ‘luz’) that if you’re not accustomed to that style or aware of the influence that it has on singer, the movie will of course seem kinda kooky and all over the place and gimmicky…but that’s just his bag! and he’s deep in it! the way it’s reconstructed to feel familiar but also not like a cheap nostalgia piece (I.E. maxxxine) is really amazing. he certainly has his niche, it’s just up to the viewer if they are not only aware but down with that. as always great review, i love the way you analyze and speak about film :)
When you said that even when you had checked out from the convoluted story you still wanted to hang out in the world… I felt that. And that alone was enough to cement it as my favorite horror from this year so far.👏🏼
I hate to put films against each other but I’ve been hyped for this one much more than Longlegs tbh. I found the director’s first film 'Luz' to have lots of interesting moments and I just admire Hunter Schafer; she has such screen presence. Will be watching it tomorrow
Liked it better than Longlegs, hopefully alien Romelus is even better and then Nosferatu tops it off with the best horror of 2024 or even The Substance which I’m excited since it’s a body horror film and loved the female directors last film (Revenge 2017)
Dug it a lot more than Longlegs. Wasn’t perfect but it cleansed the bitter taste of way too many A24 style “Demon” films that are getting way too common nowadays
Me and my twin brother are obsessed with your reviews. One of the main reasons you’re the only reviewer I watch now (I used to love Stuckman before he lost credibility and impartiality) is because your reviews are almost very stream of consciousness. Full of nuance. You praise each movies strengths while also giving valid critiques. Your reviews aren’t black and white. You never speak in absolutes and just say “this movie sucked.” You are very open about the strengths and weaknesses of each movie. It is clear you are a critical thinker and very intelligent. I ALWAYS agree with you even if I ultimately like a movie that you don’t.
I agree that the everything-plus-the-kitchen-sink approach was ultimately a weakness for the movie 🤣 I am curious, though, what the experience will be like watching it again and knowing the story's lore and trajectory. Tilman's first movie, Luz, was fantastic and creatively utilized its low budget.
Oddball sci fi in a good way. Gave me strong 70's vibes from its weird concept. So many strong monents and held together by a fantastic lead actress. Yes, the end is a puzzle that doesn't really add up to much but I enjoyed the world so thoroughly that I didn't mind.
I really want to see this. I think I'm going next week. I'm going to see Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In today. It's a Hong Kong action movie about the Kowloon Walled City.
I loved it. It wasn’t perfect, but I loved it. New favorite horror film of the year. I think it should be seen in theaters because of certain cinematic techniques, specifically sound that made the whole theater feel like we were caught in an earthquake. I think it did the Longlegs concept better, particularly when it comes to makeup and fear of the creature, Longlegs feels similar to this creature but I found Longlegs to be silly not scary, as did my theater which was cracking up every time Cage was on screen. No laughs from my theater at this one, and I think it’s bc the technical execution was better, it felt grounded and didn’t rely upon the tropiest trope of satanic worship. This felt real enough to believe and I appreciated the explanation wasn’t just the devil. It felt fresh, sinister and unexpected, unlike Longlegs where I saw the ending coming from minute 5. Longlegs felt like Mrs. Doubtfire w a mental disorder and a penchant for Satan. I think it also tackled family trauma in a much more visceral and deep way. The family dynamic and their treatment of Hunter’s character felt true to life and just as horrifying as the actual horror. This is the only movie of the year that managed to actually scare me, I think there are plenty of scares and this is unambiguously a horror thriller. Hunter and Dan were great, so were the supporting characters. The creature was complex as a character, even sympathetic, and as a metaphor for femininity under patriarchy. The way the father favors the new child and wife, who very much fit the heteronormative cis feminine ideal, even when it’s clear Hunter is in physical danger, really struck a chord for me and the director doesn’t shy away from the emotional brutality of abandonment and loss. Hunter’s performances in these scenes are Oscar-worthy. I think it was close to a perfect film from act 1-2 but it failed to stick the landing. They don’t explain (or at least my partner and I both missed this) what happens to several key characters which creates some logic issues. It also does feel like a bit too much exposition right at the end, I wish they threaded in more of the explanation in pieces instead of just dumping it. There is also one scene in particular involving a sort of shoot off that did feel slightly too campy - I think there are a couple of moments like this where the tone goes a bit too campy and while I love camp, 95% of the movie feels serious and grounded, so the camp elements feel accidental or perhaps lacking in the right execution. I also want to applaud the cinematography for giving us fresh aesthetics- somehow it makes white and beige interiors with fluorescent lighting look beautiful and evil. The visual style felt restrained yet dreamy and luxurious, and the camera techniques are also novel and really additive to the horror. Overall, I can forgive the sins of the ending bc this was my most satisfying horror film of the year, and unlike Longlegs, I felt this film had a lot more to say. I’d give it a 4/5 only because the ending didn’t deliver on all the greatness leading up to it. WATCH ITTTT!
great review! i’m interested in hearing your thoughts on the upcoming alien: romulus too! looks like it has potential to be maybe one of the better films in the franchise in a WHILE, maybe even the best horror flick of the summer, possible that I may be confusing my expectations with reality as I haven’t even seen it yet, though. eager to watch it!
This film is still on my mind. Not that I knew what was really on, but who cares, it's brilliantly entertaining. Some super performances especially from the lead and the creepy guy. Yes, its bit of a mess but if you go with it you'll also enjoy it
Cuckoo is really good, but Singer's debut feature, Luz, is really great and less conventional. Judging from your review you expected straight storytelling?
good review, felt similar about this one. you should check out LUZ from Singer, think it's on shudder. 70 minute low budget debut film with really good images and a strange atmosphere.
I usually share a similar opinion to hers but this movie along with Oddity and Longlegs are among the best of the year. It’s the summer of horror. Incredible filmmaking all around. This idea that the plot is the issue and or story isn’t really the point. Argento films are absolutely nonsensical but that doesn’t matter. Same here I feel. It’s a nightmare. Pure cinema. The director even said it doesn’t depend on story coherence. It’s a film to be experience. Visceral. As a pure experience it works fully. The main monster is terrifying.
Worth seeing for Dan Stevens alone. Since his breakout role in The Guest, I’ve seen him in quite a few indie gems, I’m Your Man etc. This one precedes Abigail, assuming it’s only now reaching US audiences.
this is a spot on review of this film. i feel like maybe it would have hit stronger for me if i hadn't already seen a cuckoo species heavy plot in vivarium.
By chance I saw Gina Gershon in Criterion closet and she held up "Bound" as it brought back good memories. Decided to check it out and thought it was great, if youve not seen it or reviewed would be worth it. Wachowski brother's in 1996, you can see many Matrix touches.
I just saw this movie today. I felt like certain things weren’t explained regarding the experiments. And then I felt like the plot had some holes, even it was pretty fun to watch. Kind of turned into a quasi “Die Hard” movie at the end too. I’m glad it’s not just me that leaves me a bit confused about this one.

Definitely going to see this in the theater.
I loved the cinematography and the overall vibe of Cuckoo, but the half-explanation for the events was mostly just silly.
Please consider reviewing the 1999 cannibal-western "Ravenous".
Ravenous is great and has a GREAT cast.
That one’s awkard at times; would’ve been better as a horror-thriller than a black comedy.
A far better film by Antonia Bird (1951-2013) is Priest.
Hell yeah, it’s got one of the greatest scores of all time!

Thoughts on Divinity? Streaming on Shudder, produced by Steven Soderbergh directed by Eddie Alcazar, first time full length project
Also the director of Cuckoo also has their debut full length flick called Luz on Shudder as well. Gives an idea of their style of film
Have you seen Late Night with the Devil yet? Would love to know your thoughts about that!
completely agree, i think there are good moments and Hunter's acting is great, but ultimately it was a total mess. Almost incomprehensible by the end
The plot sounds vaguely similar to A Cure for Wellness, which I didn't care for. I still want to see this one, though.
Cuckoo is *WAY* better than A Cure For Wellness. Difference is the villain's motive in this movie is bit more half-baked.
Some of the worst writing I’ve seen this year and Hunter fought for her life to make this movie good.
