My Dad left as soon as he knew my mom was pregnant.
I never knew who he was or anything really. Since my mom never wanted to talk about him
But once I was 11, they told me he was suddenly waiting for me at home?
He turned out to be some rich corporate guy. Not what I was expecting either. But guess what? Things got rough and once I was 15 he left me again to start a new life in China.
Starlord has always been my favourite. He is like the only super hero that I actually felt connected with. Also his entire personality and way of approaching or dealing with things kinda remind me of myself.

yeah this is the first thing I thought of when looking at this video. And it seems even worse with Ego, because while I thankfully don't have personal experience in this myself, but it seems like plenty of times that part of that absent parent's frame of mind is a real feeling of worthlessness and failure (which I don't at all mean to just be an "excuse" for the act), and their WHOLE thing about coming back at the child's peak, especially if there's money involved, is how can I also benefit from this. Whereas with the Ego character, that's absolutely a part of it, he wants to then use Peter to help further what he wants to do and be in the universe, but also... well, his name IS "Ego" lol He's ALWAYS regarded himself as something above any other living thing, he didn't leave because of feelings of personal inadequacy, but that if the given offspring doesn't immediately show to be biologically superior as well he has not a single care it even exists.

Infinity War was all about the heroes failing because of their flaws, not just because of that scene Star Lord.
1.) Tony could've called Cap immediately after Bruce told him about Thanos but he didn't.
    2. Thor could've just killed Thanos outright instead of inching slowly through his chest, but he didn't.
    3. Cap and Wanda could've fulfilled Vision's request to destroy the mind stone way before Wakanda, but they decided that trading lives was too much.
All these failures including Star Lord's affected the movies outcome heavily and they humanize these beloved characters even more. The decisions they made aren't out-of-character or just a reason to make another film. These decisions actually make sense for those specific characters to make.

    • @vincentmagius

Also sacrificial choices. Echoing "the hardest choices requires the greatest will" and the Soul Stone. Each stone came with a hard choice and sacrifice from the heroes.
      - Power, we don't know
      - Space, Loki saved Thor
      - Reality, Quill tried to kill Gamora
      - Soul, Gamora saved Nebula
      - Time, Strange saved Tony
      - Mind, Wanda killed Vision
Every other choice was an easy one. They had options where they didn't need to sacrifice anything.

Tony refused to return to Earth and fight alongside the rest of the squad (make up with Steve, etc.). He thought he, Strange, and Parker could take Thanos on (seriously?).
Gamora gave up Vormir to save Nebula.
Strange gave the Time Stone to Thanos in order to spare Tony's life.
Scarlet Witch refused to destroy the Mind Stone waaaaay before Thanos was ever on the playing field because she couldn't face killing Vision.
The Nova Corps couldn't keep the Power Stone safe.
The Collector was no match for Thanos in keeping the Reality Stone safe (given to him by Sif/Asgard in Thor 2).
Hulk refused to come out and fight after getting his ass whooped once.
Thor refused to go for the killing blow against Thanos because he regressed into hubris and arrogance in what would've been Thanos' final moments in order to get the last word in ("I told you you'd pay for that" - type speech).
Yet, the ONLY character in Infinity War who *_WAS WILLING_* to sacrifice something supremely important to them was Quill, when he *PULLED THE TRIGGER TO KILL GAMORA*. That obviously failed, but it wasn't his fault.
AND he had previously sacrificed a huge part of himself in Guardians 2 by killing Ego, and therefore his half-Demi God status, in order to save his FRIENDS.
There's LITERALLY nothing of merit when I hear someone saying that "it was all Quill's fault", because, if they paid attention, it wasn't.

I'm really not one who comments on videos often unless I have something important to say. I did grow up with both parents, and I DID feel that Peter's reaction was genuine. I knew kids without a certain parent (mother or father) and while as children you could tell they wanted to meet them, as they grew older my friends stopped caring. It became a hard apathy. If anything, he was a little too open; however, Ego IS manipulative and provided Peter with exactly what he wanted to hear. This was a good movie with good writing. Thanks for reading, I know it was long.

    • @tomc6217
      @tomc6217 5 ปีที่แล้ว +23

I'm not gonna lie, if I was Peter I would have been seduced by Ego's promises. Usually that apathy is just there to cover the wound. There is plenty of emotion still under there, waiting to be ripped open. Especially when so much has been left unresolved. Here comes Ego offering answers, security, power, and fatherly pride and affection. If he had just stuck with "that darn cancer took your mom away" he would have won, which is why his ego forced him to reveal the truth and push the plot forward. So, agreed that it was brilliant writing.

    • @ljmsevern

Ego's planet and promises were PERFECTLY designed to appeal to a small boy - the small boy who was abducted by Yondu. Even decades later, Peter is almost fully taken in (until he finds out Ego is the reason his mother died).

24:27 I feel the need to point out something that everyone seems to have missed. Peter is a master Strategist and thief. While Tony is simply a good tactician.
When it comes to planning a fight he prefers to use a fist to hammer in a nail. For example - In the Avengers Infinity war - Tony uses everyone else's plans to overcome his foes. Cull Obsidian has his hand chopped off and teleported away by Wong and Peter Parker shares his strategy of defeating Ebony Maw by sucking him out of his own ship. His plans usually boil down to "here's what we should aim for, this is what we need to avoid", rather than give orders to each teammate that Peter Quill or Captain America would. Meanwhile Quill is somewhat resourceful but strategic - A thief, able to delegate jobs and create distractions and plan ahead of his opponents moves.
Tony's ability to wage war is perfectly encapsulated in this quote from the Original Avengers.
"Tony we need a plan of attack"
    "I have a plan... ATTACK"

Which, when you think about it, might be a window into Stark as CEO. As the big boss, he knows what his objectives are, but he's always had somebody there to worry about the more minor details, whether it be Pepper at Stark Industries or Captain America in the Avengers. Even in the first two Avengers movies, he just sort of sets broad objectives (close that portal, get the scepter). It's Cap who handles the "how" portion.

    • @seraphcross85
      @seraphcross85 5 ปีที่แล้ว +36

I think that's a better way of putting it than "Stark couldn't do it." Stark is a reactive tactician. The fight happens, and Stark finds a way to complete the goal, probably using one of a million resources that are already there 'just in case', but not with a definite plan. It's more like a flowchart with a lot of arrows. The reason that MCU Stark has trouble leading a team is that it's difficult to give other people timely instructions based on the reactions he's seeing. By the time he can make them get it, the moment's passed, the flowchart has changed. He might have had a slightly better chance with other highly intelligent solo fighters (like Spidey and Strange), who can think and react to things on a similar level, but that wouldn't have worked for everyone there. The Guardians are a team (one which he was fighting just a little while beforehand), and Quill is their quarterback.
Plus, if you watch the whole scene, as soon as he says he has the beginnings of a plan, Drax is yawning, Quill is immediately bucking any semblance of authority (easy, because Stark is one of those folks that walks into a room and assumes he's in charge), Mantis is... being Mantis, and Stark seems to see it all as either disrespectful or unprofessional or both. He never actually got to a plan. At that point, it'd be entirely plausibe that he wouldn't even try to call a real play there because the trust and knowledge of ability wasn't present, and just chilling out long enough to try to gain any part of that, or just not a sense resentment and distrust, didn't look to be in the cards. Better to just give them a general goal and let them do what comes naturally. Or fall into their plan and try to make the flowchart work.

    • @harktheheral
      @harktheheral 5 ปีที่แล้ว +55

Other way around: Stark has an endgame (strategy) versus a tactic (accomplishment of that strategy). Strategy defines objectives, tactics accomplishes them.
So Stark's "plan" - "draw [Thanos] in, pin him down, get the gauntlet, we do not want to dance with this guy" - is 100% true. It's even what they ATTEMPTED to do. The details, i.e. the tactics, were fleshed out by Quill, but Stark had the understanding of the situation and ultimate goal that informed how to implement step-by-step, concrete actions.

And yet, after all the individual failures, it *_HAD_* to be this way. Only 1 in 14,000,605 possible futures in which they defeat Thanos.

The line when Thanos says " I had too" while being mind-melded by mantiz Then Star Lord responding "no you didn't" he isn't talking to Thanos. Before, when Star lord pulled the trigger even though bubbles came out of his blaster, in his mind he was willing to kill the love of his life for the sake of the galaxy this was probably a shock and surprise even to him. He may have made a promise but seriously who expects themselves to be in that position. After learning that Gamora is really dead, he doesn't blame himself for failing to stop Thanos. He blames himself for being no better than Thanos. Thanos had to sacrifice the one thing he loved the most for the soul stone which was Gamora. Try to imagine in that moment being face to face with the man that killed the most important person in you life and realizing you tried and were willing to do the same. You are no better than the thing you hate. He may be swinging at Thanos but Peter is trying wildly to destroy himself in that moment and he succeeds.

Years later during middle school I end up meeting the guy for about a week when i learn that he feels he wants nothing to do with me. This is the first time I'm even made aware that my dad isn't biologically related to me.
Everyone I knew, from friends and siblings to parents or school counselors kept greeting me like I was some fragile kid about to break from his disinterest.
In reality, I didn't know the guy
And I had my dad, my stepfather
A guy who married my mom after he knew I was there and chose to assume a responsibility for me that he has no need to take on.
It baffles me how anyone could assume I'd be emotionally devastated over this person i dont know. It would be like falling to my knees in anguish if some random person cut in front of me in a line or something. It was that kind of level. Annoying at best.
If anything, the only strong emotion I really felt was a confusion as to how I fit into my family
I only truly had a blood connection to my mother. My Dad was now just a guy i knew and my full-blood siblings were now revealed to be only half related. I think if there was a shock, it came from a loss of the connection I felt couldn't be taken from me. Not from some sudden understanding of "You dont have this thing that you never needed".

Great video. All the main characters lost due to not their flaws per se, but their virtues. Everything they hold dear.
Cap's refusal to kill Vision - though definitely heroic - was a flaw that led to defeat.
Strange swore to protect the time stone when he could have destroyed it, and did not.
Thor - here a vice - could have killed Thanos but decided to gloat.
Only Iron Man didn't lose by any flaws. Though the effect of defear was still devastating after spending all those years and mistakes (Ultron) to prepare for it. His intelligence wasn't enough.
And Starlord, as the video said: his grounded emotional human quality. He let his emotions get in the way when it usually helps, and he failed as a leader twice, the one thing he was good at.

And there were so many variations that its possible that there are time lines or realities where peter could have kept his cool. Dr. Strange would have also seen events where he did, but yet they didn't work in the end of it. Hence, he allowed the mishap to happen and the snap to occur. Great video, but you forgot something very important; the Guardians' dialogues (including Quill) were all written by James Gunn in Infinity War.
And it shows, the way he acts in this movie is completely in tone with the way he acted in the Guardians movies, he is short-tempered, he always was (like almost getting his friends and himself killed over his walkman), it was that surprising that he ruined the whole plan when he learned about Gamora? if anything, Nebula is to blame, she KNOWS Quill, she KNEW how he was going to react, and she was the one confirming Gamora was dead knowing full well how Quill was going to react...heck, TONY knew how Quill was going to react, that is why he takes his helmet off and begs him to cool down and not "do it" (Tony does this because he knows he would have done the same if it was Pepper instead of Gamora).
And I agree that he is the biggest underdog in the MCU...reason why I hated that they made him half-celestial, and I think Gunn himself hated that too, so that is why by the end of the movie it all goes back to the status quo (or "worse", with EGO's death, Quill is literally 100% human, he most likely couldnt hold an infinity stone now).
Lastly, Infinity War has two of the best Quill moments in the entire MCU, the "what master do I serve? what am I suppoused to say, Jesus?", which was an inside joke because of how a devoted christian Chris Pratt is, and then when Tony calls him "Flash Gordon" to insult him, and Quill replies "that's a compliment"

GoTG 2 is one of the very few MCU movies or even films in general that got me to cry. I don't really know what Gunn's relationship with his own father is like, but based on Vol 2 I'm willing to bet it's not ideal, he just gets it in a way that hard to emulate if you haven't experienced it yourself and carry that emotional baggage with you.
It's a damn shame how Gunn's time at Marvel ended, they truly lost out on a great next level storyteller.

Every time I hear someone say that Starlord is the guilty of Thanos victory, I always tell them, "of course he is guilty, guilty of being a character with a human reaction", because the only thing he loved was taken from him. There are four characters with those characteristics on Infinity War and all four are given the same choice, kill one for the good of the universe, StarLord, Thor, Scarlet Witch and Thanos.

@@vibez2806 A human reaction is an understandable one. Was Hus actions stupid. Yep. But it is totally inline with his established character. Quill is absolutely the type of guy to get tunnel vision in a moment of anger and forget what's going on around him.
The thing many people think, is that obviously he couldn't gave forgotten what's at stake. But I would argue that many people would do that in his shoes. Gamora was one of the very few good things in his screwed up life, her, and to a lesser extent the guardians are the last good thing he has.
I could easily imagine, a moment, were my Mom was killed by a man, everyone else is gone, the man was being held down in front of me. My family is the only thing that matter to me, my Mom most of all
This person, this piece of shit, took from we the last good thing I had left. The reason for me to care. In that moment, I'm sure I'd finally snap. My vision would turn red. I don't care about the consequences, I need to kill this man.
Why should I care? Everyone I love is dead, my reason for living, so I don't care about the consequences, about the potential hurt others might go through. I can absolutely see myself in Peters place, and refuse to hate on him, because I'm not a hypocrite.
Its hard to put yourself in other shoes, especially when you can't relate to there problems, but I can. I can absolutely see myself doing what Peter did, and unlike he is likely to be, I wouldn't feel bad.
I would care if half the universe died, because everyone I care about is already dead, so why should I care. Call it selfish, but I don't care.
I once said that if it was between my family, and 100,000,000 or so random people, I would choose my family overtime without remorse. But I also stated that if it was everyone else or then, I would chose everyone else.
Why? Its not because I value humanity more, I just wouldn't want them to live in world were we would have to survive in the wild, as no one can manage anything, meaning we would have to just survive. I'm not willing to put them through that.
So yeah, I would do what Peter did, I don't care if its selfish,I would do the exact same thing. I man care for people, try to be nice, understanding, but my love for my family outdoes my care for the entirety of humanity combined, millions of time over.

Spoiler for endgame filled counter argument:
If he HADN'T punched Thanos, the snap would have occurred either too early, or too late. Remember, the turning point in the beginning of endgame is that Scott lang escapes the quantum realm thanks to rodent ex machina five years later.
Without that 5 year gap, Iron man wouldn't have had time to build his own gauntlet, banner wouldn't have been able to tame his Hulk form, and likely more small differences that wouldn't have led to the most optimal outcome. After all if they HAD managed to get the gauntlet off thanos, none of the people on titan could have used it without dying to kill thanos, and it's not likely they'd be able to get the drop on Thanos to kill him, even if he was completely mantis-tranced. Strange may have been able to take the gauntlet elsewhere, but Thanos and his minions wouldn't have stopped.

    • @lulub517
      @lulub517 5 ปีที่แล้ว +21

Exactly! Also in endgame when Scarlet witch was giving it her all, Thanos wouldn’t stop even when he was about to be crushed into tiny fragments. This bastard’s determination to get the stones outways his enemies brainpower to try and take the gauntlet. He was so focused on getting the stones that in the end he fucked up actually having them in his gauntlet, letting iron man take the last snap. There is no way in hell they would’ve been able to get the gauntlet off of him without an entire army.

His attacking Ego after the revelation of what he did to his mother felt so emotionally satisfying, and I connected with that. I feel like most people would react that way to finding out someone killed their mother. Its a human moment, one that is grounded but good. Yet its that same impulsive reaction to emotion that hurts him so much in Infinity War. And that is so true to real life as well. This video completely describes why Peter Quill is one of my favorite characters in the MCU. His positive and upbeat optimism is breathtaking. Also, the line about dealing with his shitty childhood causing him to jump head first into whimsy hit home with me. More than anything, after watching a few of your videos tonight, I've subscribed and not just because you produce fantastic videos but because there is a warmth and kindness that radiates from you guys!

Finally someone who isn't stomping on this character. Quill has proven himself to be one of the most relatable characters in the MCU. After seeing his reaction in Volume 2. learning how his mother got sick, I wasn't surprised how he reacted and I honestly felt with him. I myself grew up without my father who left my younger than Quil was, and I honestly might have loved to reunite with him and catch up on the things I never had as a kid. I was the only child and was often isolated from the others. Sometimes I would try to be funny and just end up awkward, much like how Quill is most of the time. But i often learn from my mistakes, even if it means failing from them again and again. Honestly, it was Tony's fault for having separated the Avengers before Infinity War, and never even called Steve when the attack happen, he let his ego in the way. When learning Gamor died, he completely lost his shit because he was tired of people around him who he has cared for keep slipping away from his fingers. I probably will 100% react the same way, I let my anger get the best of me sometimes. But like Peter, I want to show people the best version of myself, and that is why I still love Star-Lord. Comment what you guys think.

imho…what i liked about the psychology of quill costing them the fight…is that earlier while they were planning…he dropped this line "…Don’t forget, I’m half human. So that 50% of me that’s stupid, that’s 100% you." …yet it was his humanity that was over came by emotion and rage that blinded the task at hand and made a "stupid" move (THE 50 PERCENT OF HIS HUMANITY ESSENTIALLY LEAD TO DECIMATING 50 PERCENT OF THE UNIVERSE LIFE FORMS)…another great display from the writers by getting the audience to invest into these characters…this relates to our lives when making a "stupid" decision during pressure situations…so we fully understand and feel for this scene

I couldn’t believe the backlash against Quill after Infinity War with everyone complaining about his “failure “. I’m not in anyway a violent person but a few years ago after a guy blew through a stop sign and almost struck my daughter in a crosswalk and then stopped his car to yell at her I attacked him despite her pleading with me not to. I have a Ph.D in chemistry and yet in the heat of an anger fueled rage was about to do something that could ruin my life. If the guy hadn’t gotten back into his car and fled I probably would have. I’m in no way proud of my reaction. My daughter was terrified seeing me out of control. My point is never judge someone unless you’ve ever been in a similar circumstance.

This is an amazing video. Peter Quill is an amazing and well written character, definitely one of the best in the MCU. His and Gamora's relationship is the MCUs best (in my opinion), and the Guardians as a team feel much more like a caring yet realistically mildly disnfuntional family than any other. GOTG 1 and GOTG 2 were both amazing masterpieces. James Gunn knows what he's doing.

I think the problem with Peter's failure in Infinity War is that he isn't redeemed or explicitly qualified in Endgame. If Strange just came out and said that the only version of the future that would work is a direct result of Peter effing up, then I would be satisfied. This is basically implied, of course, but an explicit reference to clear him would have gone a long way for audiences, I think.

    • @dannypalin9583

I can understand why the people who were mad at him in Infinity War complained about how unfairly he was treated in Endgame.
He's treated like a bumbling, incompetent fool who gets punched by War Machine, kicked in the balls by 2014 Gamora and replaced as the leader of the Guardians by Thor.
