  • Hello, everyone🌻
Recently, I've gotten an opportunity getting to spend a week to study in Singapore!
I realized that from many countries I've visited, none of them make me feel like Singapore and here is my explanation why... as I've thought about it
By the way, this is not a part of my university project. hahaha
Just in case y'all are wondering if this is related to school work or not, the answer is no.
    Enjoy
This is the link to the Cultural Article I mentioned

I'm glad that you enjoyed your time in Singapore! I am Malay but I was raised in an english-speaking environment, which means that my Malay language skills are enough to get by but not enough to hold an educated/proper (?) conversation. This led to a lot of ridicule from my relatives and even some strangers. But eventually, I realised and decided that regardless of my second language skills, I am Malay enough for myself and try my best to keep my identity the way that I see fit.

Exactly! at the end of the day what matters most is whether or not you know who you are!! I love how you said that you're Malay enough for yourself; it's such a powerful phrase especially for the situation where we're sometimes being excluded from certain group of people just because we're a bit different, it sucks isn't it. I can totally relate. But you're doing great! Thank you so much for sharing your experience!! have a good day :))

Answering your last question:As a person who lived there for a year + traveled several times as well, i feel warmth and welcome every time my feet touched the ground. Not only because I have my family there, but because “SINGAPORE is a part of me”. I would not be USARA if I was not there. Thank you so much for making such a good video(s). As a girl who studies language and linguistics, I am more than happy listening to your video and listen when you analyzed the cultures and the country. Looking forward for your up coming videos. ❤

I believe that Singapore is definitely one of the best parts of what has amazingly formed who you are today!! cheers to Usara! cheers to SG!

I am very proud to be a Singaporean. I could relate with you in some ways regarding about identity especially when I was at an exchange and I have to deal with people asking about my identity and citizenship just because my ethnic group is Chinese and looked Chinese. I am very glad to see this video coming out which shows beyond the surface of Singapore and you touched on the stuff that people often don't mention or forgot to even consider e.g., the population stats of Singapore, the comfort of being yourself (language used in everyday life, the living culture and food). I am glad that you found yourself comfortable in Singapore!

I know right, I get asked all the time as well about my citizenship/ race/ ethnicity/ identity etc. Also, thank you so so so much for noticing my hard work in every single detail and aspect I want to share as well as appreciating what I created. I truly appreciate you sharing your experience with me, have a blessed day! 💌

I would say that I enjoyed a recent Singapore vlog. It was quite a new style of vlog (at least in my opinion) especially with your reflection on your trip. Btw, I really appreciated when talking about three reasons why you love Singapore. It makes me think over it too when I have been there.
    Keep going!💖

Hi, just saw your vlog. Yes, Singapore has a very diverse and largely very accepting population. Glad you found your “home” here among our people. By the way, do you know you look like the younger version of the main character in Netflix’s 3 Body Problem. By coincidence, the actress’ name is Jess HONG!

I enjoyed your vlog, and Singapore looks like a nice place to be. I get some of your dilemmas about your identity. It sounds like you are figuring things out, and hopefully you are able to build on that. 🙏

Your "quest" to find your "cultural identity" will be a lifelong quest. I hope at every stage of your quest, you find contentment with yourself, and acceptance of who you are. No one can tell you what or who you should be. And who you are today, may well change tomorrow, and your identity may adapt to your situation and your objectives. So be satisfied with whatever answers you find or discover, and be willing to adjust. Understand that any answers you settle on, is ultimately transient. (That is the lesson of Singapore.) I am an English-speaking ethnically Chinese Singaporean, and I have realised that knowing more than one language is an advantage. Take the English-based question: "What happens when an Irresistible Force meets an Immovable Object?" The question in English seems doomed to inconclusive argument, or contentious assumptions or concessions. But there is a Chinese analogue - "Mou Tun", where a spear and shield vendor in selling his wares, extolled the quality of his shields. The shields were so well made that it could stop any weapon. Nothing can penetrate his shield. Then he moved on to his spears. Again he extolled the quality of his spear - so sharp, so strong, so powerful. Nothing could resist the power of his spear. Of course, the assembled crowd ask him, "what happens if your spear is blocked by your shield?" Or in English, what happens if an irresistible force meets an immovable object?
If you knew the "Mou Tun" parable, you would realise the answer to the question.
    For a longer discussion: plag2gether.wordpress.com/2019/12/01/the-importance-of-knowing-more-than-one-language/
Don't be too impatient to find your identity. Understand that it is evolving, as you are. Enjoy the change!
