- Timeline history of the science fiction movies popularity starting 1968 to 2019. Numbers represent worldwide gross revenue with a long-term ticket price adjustment for inflation. I used traditional classification where the Sci-Fi category includes sub-genres like space opera, superheroes fiction etc. Have fun!

George Lucas initially claimed that Star Wars would be one big failure. That's why he went to Hawaii before premiere to cut himself off from any opinions about this movie.

I can't believe that The Matrix (1999), one of the best, most groundbreaking and pop-culture phenomenon of the last 25 years, didn't even make the list!!
I noticed that as well, the other movie that surprised me wasn't on the list was the original Ghostbusters.
Matrix found its audience on DVD. In theater it wasnt the hit it would become.
The 2nd film briefly did make the list and thats because after watching the matrix at home everyone wanted more.
The 3rd film didnt make the list and that tells you all you need to know about the 2nd film.
I look for at least some realism in sci-fi movies. Jurassic Park gave this best. That's why I think it should be Jurassic Park 1. The only masterpiece that is both real and unreal. But because people are stupid, this movie never made it to #1.

Absolutely agree. While they obviously share elements with sci-fi, they are a distinct and separate genre.
They're fantasy, not sci-fi.

There's a line in the Spielberg Vs Hitchcock Epic Rap Battle where Hitchcock says to Spielberg "half your billions should go to John Williams".

I mean soundtrack is maybe the most importent part of a movie when it comes to stimulating the senses... Even more so than the visuals.

My mom was a statistician/data mgr. for a large healthcare company, and she would've rocked at creating these or just loved looking at them.
Several of these movies seem like they should be in the Action movie category instead of Sci-Fi

The cinema manager in our town refused to show star wars because he said "it's a kids film, and he didn't want his cinema full of kids". Which is why we didn't get to see it until it came on TV years later.

Long story short: In the 70s and 80s space travel movies dominated the sci-fi genre and since the 2000s superhero movies except Star Wars took their place.

Very interesting. It’s mind-blowing how Star Wars IV shot to the top instantly (far surpassing all others) and stayed there for 33 years. It’s also mind-blowing how Avatar rose to the top and superseded Star Wars IV (i.e., 33 years worth of sales) in just 7 months.

The fact that Star Wars owned this graphic for more than 30 years is really impressive.
I disagree.
Once you're the first in a successful business, it is very hard to get overtaken.
Just look at SpaceX and re-usability - no other company is anywhere close to what they are doing.
The same goes for Lucas Arts. They were the first to develop the tech needed for sci-fi film and it is still used today by many film makers.
Don't you think it is impressive that they made a movie franchise so good that it took 30 years of technological advancement for a movie to surpass them?
