I look for at least some realism in sci-fi movies. Jurassic Park gave this best. That's why I think it should be Jurassic Park 1. The only masterpiece that is both real and unreal. But because people are stupid, this movie never made it to #1.

I disagree. Once you're the first in a successful business, it is very hard to get overtaken. Just look at SpaceX and re-usability - no other company is anywhere close to what they are doing. The same goes for Lucas Arts. They were the first to develop the tech needed for sci-fi film and it is still used today by many film makers.
Don't you think it is impressive that they made a movie franchise so good that it took 30 years of technological advancement for a movie to surpass them?
Why? I consider Avatar one of the best sci-fi ever made its world building is perhaps the most beautiful of all time and its message to today's Humanity is deep.

Lastly, the sole reason the first Avatar was successful was because it was the first movie released in 3D. The upcoming sequels don't have that advantage
I find it funny that the movies that overranked or was up there with Star Wars with no struggle was mostly Steven Spielberg movies. George and Steven always do find a way with each other.
I was 9 when it came out. How that movie changed everything is hard to describe. You never seen anything like it in movies before. For the younger generations I tell them it's like seeing the JP Dinos for the first time x1000. That's probably before your time though, and I don't know what to say. Also if it means anything I remember being blown away by the PS1 graphics.

It's ironic that Avatar took the lead and I remember being hyped about the movie and watching it. But looking at it's overall impact on our culture it seems like a blip. I never see or hear people have merch, quote lines or references the movie compared to other movies. Other movies seem to become part of our collective culture. I also recall Cameron say in an interview that he was surprised how quick an forgettable Avatar became after a few years. Its like it had nothing of substance to offer us to cling on.
Nah, treks did rule the 90s and early 00s. There were some very good movies in 95, 97 and other years as well. And anime. Things got worse after treks ended though.

Superhero comic book movies are most definitely pushing it when it comes to classifying as 'sci-fi'. Some of the action and comedy movies included are, too. When you consider some omissions (Logan's Run at the very least), this list is a bit shaky.
No disrespect to Avatar, which is an amazing movie from many aspects, but a movie from 1977 keeping up so close to a modern one... Specially if you consider inflation ... SW is still the winner.

Lastly, the sole reason the first Avatar was successful was because it was the first movie released in 3D. The upcoming sequels don't have that advantage

I was 9 when it came out. How that movie changed everything is hard to describe. You never seen anything like it in movies before. For the younger generations I tell them it's like seeing the JP Dinos for the first time x1000. That's probably before your time though, and I don't know what to say.
Also if it means anything I remember being blown away by the PS1 graphics.

It's ironic that Avatar took the lead and I remember being hyped about the movie and watching it. But looking at it's overall impact on our culture it seems like a blip. I never see or hear people have merch, quote lines or references the movie compared to other movies. Other movies seem to become part of our collective culture. I also recall Cameron say in an interview that he was surprised how quick an forgettable Avatar became after a few years. Its like it had nothing of substance to offer us to cling on.
I remember more about Cartman's take on it on South Park than the actual movie.

1977 to 1993 were definitely the best years for science fiction and fantasy. It was a real Golden Age for sci~fi movies
Nah, treks did rule the 90s and early 00s. There were some very good movies in 95, 97 and other years as well. And anime. Things got worse after treks ended though.

Superhero comic book movies are most definitely pushing it when it comes to classifying as 'sci-fi'. Some of the action and comedy movies included are, too. When you consider some omissions (Logan's Run at the very least), this list is a bit shaky.
