  • Best Selling Cell Phone Brands 1978 - 2020
I remade this video because it didn't have enough info and I wanted to research the start of the cell phone era.
Cell phone technology was introduced to the US in 1976 by OKI Electric, a Japanese company. They were in a race with Motorola to finalize and unveil the technology. Although they won the race, Motorola managed to set up the first test markets in Chicago and Washington DC. These are the brands that produced cell phones from the beginning until now. Researching all this information took me days. It entailed going through old industry data and company financial reports, hopefully you’ll enjoy it.
1G networks could handle 100k callers vs 20 callers on radiotelephone networks.
One of the First portable cellphones was the Mobira Senator (Nokia) which weighed 22 lb.
Japanese and European cellphones dominated the 80s because of higher quality while American phones had 5x the defects.

I don't recall the model type but the first one I got in 2004 was an LG. Second cell was another LG due to all the texting I was doing in 2008 (could move the screen and number-pad aside revealing a keyboard). Late 2011 switched to an iPhone 4s. Currently have an iPhone 12.

I'm currently using a Motorola phone to watch this video. My favorite thing about it is the removable battery, a feature that has been eliminated by most brands. Instead of fiddling with fragile charging cords, I just let it run down and then swap to a fresh battery. I wish there was a phone with a small internal battery and a larger one that could be swapped, though. Then I wouldn't have to power it down every time.

For some reason, I feel like the HTC G1 and Evo phones started the touchscreen smartphone trend, not Apple. Because even though Apple was already a super popular company back then, not a lot of people were ready to go the iPhone route right away. It was HTC that pushed people and phone manufacturers in that direction. Samsung simply carried the torch from HTC. And Blackberry helped with the transition from flip phone/dumb phone to smartphone by giving people access to social media on a large screen. I know I rambled a bit on here, but it's just so interesting to me how fast we went from simple phones like flip phones that were mainly used to just talk to people to these mini-computer touchscreen phones in such a short period of time.

My first phone was a Siemens when cellphones came to South Africa in 1994 - I was one of the first to get one, and people thought I was pretty weird! I think it's because I prefer to text than to talk on a phone. I struggled with it, and swopped over to Nokia, which was simple to use and an absolute joy! I stayed with Nokia until my first smartphone, the Note 5 in 2015, and besides a brief foray into Huawei one year, have stuck to Samsung! I still have one of my old Nokia's puttering around in a drawer for nostalgia sake! imagine - a phone you only had to charge once a week compared to the twice a day with my S22+!

I remember I started out with a Siemens C25e probably around ’02? Maybe later than that, I don’t remember. From there I went to the Sagem My X-2 which was my first colour screen (and polyphonic ringtones). That one got stolen and was replaced with a hand-me-down Sony-Ericsson. Can’t remember the model but it was my first camera phone. From that I went to a Sanyo. Again can’t remember the model, but it was one of this flip out phones (not the clam shell flips the ones with the sliding keyboard cover). From that I went to an LG-KS360. First mobile phone to sport a full qwerty keyboard (first for me, I mean), from that, I went to a Blackberry Curve 8520. Both my first “smart” phone and my first on contract. From that I upgraded to the Samsung Galaxy Ace 2 (my first modern smartphone), after that I upgraded to the iPhone 6, then the iPhone 6S Plus, a brief stint back with Android and the Samsung Galaxy S20 (at least I think it was 20. I had also briefly toyed with the Nexus 6P). I then upgraded to the iPhone X. Qualified for an early upgrade after just a year so picked up the XS Max which served me faithfully until the end of last year when I picked up my current iPhone 13 Pro Max.
Also, technically the iPhone would have been the first modern smartphone. “Modern” would refer to the multitouch interface which has been at the core of smartphone navigation ever since.

samsung is the biggest phone brand now and motorola don't even know what is happening, their phone are garbage. Motorola was a big deal back then, but now as i said, there is no reason to buy their phones, they are garbage for a big price just because they are named motorola or they are still garbage but ideal for the people that want to spent maximum 150 dollars on phone
