Taikichiro Mori, Tokyo Developer was the wealthiest man in the 1980s, as ranked by Forbes Magazine. The son of a rice farmer, he taught Economics until age 55, when he decided to quit his day job, and focus entirely on his side hustle, which was to slowly and with the consent and cooperation of locals, build Toyko into the gleaming modern metropolis it is today. He had seen, twice, the city destroyed by the 1923 Earthquake, and bombed in WW2. He would go on to architected the skyline of the Imperial City, changing small narrow streets where children would play hide, and seek, and spin tops as games, into neighborhood buildings unto themselves filled with apartments, offices, theaters, TV stations, shops and markets. Living modestly, he worked in a traditional kimono, and abstained from drink and tobacco. He is survived by several children, and a wife, when he died at age 88, a year after the Toyko real estate market, and its extraordinary prices, corrected itself.

the problem with the wealth of each person is that it is not real money they have on their bank accounts but (in most cases) just speculative numbers based on the value of stakes they hold in their companies. that is why elon musk suddenly reaches 300 billion dollars and right after falls back to 100 billion dollars. that doesn't mean he spent 200 billion dollars. it is just because tesla's stock value dropped.
