I was shocked that Atari didn't do anything with their lead and fizzled out. They were the top player, and if they had played their cards right, innovated, and were financially prudent, they would easily be above Sony today...
@@JosephDalrymple That happens a lot in business. Blockbuster suffered the same fate when they couldn't see the writing on the wall regarding streaming taking over the home video market. AT&T also was on the verge of collapse at one point when digital cell service appeared and they waited too long to get on the train; they eventually recovered largely due to iPhone exclusivity when it first came out. Like many leading companies Atari got complacent and rather than spend to innovate they tried to cling to the status quo and they paid for it. Only reason they stuck around as long as they did was because of the Lynx and Jaguar and their effort to take over the handheld market but the affordability and versatility of the Game Boy killed their hopes there as well.
The Atari 2600 was ubiquitous. It's the system that started the video game craze and so many people had them. Atari's downfall was that they designed and started producing the 7800, but then left it sitting on warehouse shelves until the NES came out and took over. Plus Nintendo actually offered to pay Atari to put their brand on the NES but they refused, a mistake they would regret. Regardless, Atari was a totally different company by then compared to the one Alan Bushnell created in the 70s, and now it's nothing but a brand.

I got a silver slim one that I've had for at least 15 years, would occasionally hope on it every once in a while to play Jurassic Park Operation Genesis and the OG Monster Hunter. Swear to god it actually performs better the older it gets, the loading times seem to be way faster then I remember, and I mean it's actually impressive how fast it loads.
The big issue with counting PS2 sales as "console sales" is that in the first half of it's active life it also was the cheapest DVD player on the market. I can still remember the days when half the kids in my elementary school, and their grand parents, had a PS2 but most had not much more than a demo disk that came with the system to play.
Flamware The "Nintendo Playstation" aka Super Disc was originally a joint venture between Nintendo and Sony. It was supposed to be an add-on to the SNES but unfortunately Nintendo and Sony could not agree to terms involving licensing as Sony would have benefited heavily from software licensing and would be the sole benefactor from music and movie licensing since they would retain control over the Super Disc itself, something Nintendo was uncomfortable with as you could imagine. The prototype system was already being produced, along with software to support it before the deal finally collapsed. Going forward, Sony would focus on developing a competitor system for the next generation of consoles known as the Playstation (heavily inspired by the Super Disc). So at the end of the day, Nintendo essentially helped create the prototype of their biggest competitor.
It's not only the powerful hardware, but the affordablity (outside of PS3) and just massive game library + quality compared to the other producers. Which has given them a trustworthy name in gaming imo. Something Nintendo just recovered from after wii u and Microsoft has really yet to recover from

I would argue that, at least by the era of the 3DS, handhelds should be counted too. The 3DS could play enough of the same games as home consoles to make a sizable competitor for Xbox and PlayStation, and since then the distinction has only gotten blurrier
They weren’t rivals in the beginning. They were more like a divorced couple. PlayStation started as a child of Nintendo and Sony. Then Nintendo abandoned the Playstation and adopted Philips instead(worst business move ever). Sony then decided to adopt and raise the PlayStation all by themselves. Several years later, that kid became the greatest console in history.

How cool would it be to have a fully functional wireless PS5 controller, but it looks and feels like a Dreamcast or N64 controller? I was shocked that Atari didn't do anything with their lead and fizzled out. They were the top player, and if they had played their cards right, innovated, and were financially prudent, they would easily be above Sony today...
@@JosephDalrymple they were also the reason people stopped playing video games entirely
Look up the video game crash of 83
@@JosephDalrymple That happens a lot in business.

What a ride it’s been seeing those early days of graphics etc compared to the graphics of today. I’m looking to seeing what the future brings.
Same brother. I’m 53. Been playing since pong. Seen and played every generation. What this video doesn’t reflect is pc gaming. Commodore 64 then a 386 pc and so on. I’m sure you were there too.
Same here, i'm 52 and have been playing since the Atari 2600.

Everyone remembers when the PS2 legitimately shattered records in its wake when it first came out. The PS2 was so influential to Sony's success in the Video game market. I still have mine proudly and it still works like a damn charm.
growing up we had to buy a couple more because they died but the one i have now has lasted a long time it died at one point and then came back to life some how and has no bad side effects from dying
Idk what happened to my ps2 I might still have it but playing games on that and the original ps was the best.
They were built like tanks if got a good one.
Nintendo will forever regret making the beta version of the Playstation......
What d y mean?

I just recovered my old Sega Master System II from my parent’s garage. Cleaned it and managed to plug it to a modern flat screen, channel 36 and played Alex Kid and Sonic after 25 years. It was like traveling back in time.
💯💯💯
I loved Alex Kidd. I only played a bit of it at friends' houses but it hooked me. Some games do that - I remember wandering into a Virgin Megastore, and they had a PS1 with Tomb Raider as a demo machine. I wasn't that interested, I had an N64 at that point I think, but I started playing and time just seemed to stop. My mum came and found me an hour later and I don't think I'd looked away from the screen in all that time.
Why is it always channel 36 😂
He's gonna take you back to the past.
@XSAVIER busy it worked just fine on my flat screen… Not gonna play everyday either. But thanks for the tip 👌🏻
Nintendo: Beats the first PlayStation
Also Nintendo: wait why is there another health bar?
Lol
Sony clearly took over this market. But if we add both consoles and handhelds, it's a way closer match
@@williamhuynh869 Yes, very true. Just trying to make a joke.
Lmao, it's like a boss with 2nd phase
I would argue that, at least by the era of the 3DS, handhelds should be counted too. The 3DS could play enough of the same games as home consoles to make a sizable competitor for Xbox and PlayStation, and since then the distinction has only gotten blurrier
Me: Nintendo was Sony’s true rival all this time?
Nintendo: Always have been
J C lol
Riyadh Uddin because they are targeted at different people typically
They weren’t rivals in the beginning. They were more like a divorced couple. PlayStation started as a child of Nintendo and Sony. Then Nintendo abandoned the Playstation and adopted Philips instead(worst business move ever). Sony then decided to adopt and raise the PlayStation all by themselves. Several years later, that kid became the greatest console in history.
James PlayStation is the greatest console in history. Even Guinness World Record says so.
PlayStation gamer i’m twenty years old and i own both a switch and a ps4. If you think nintendo its for kid you don’t even know what gaming is, Nintendo games has and still do history of gaming.
People: Wii is amazing!
Nintendo some years later: adds it a U
People:

I’m the guy that has a Wii and a xBox360 XD

The big went N went "oh shit we pissed Sony off"
I really like the pop-up style of update to your videos. Great extra information.
One thing was missed though: the sudden surge in Atari sales in 1980, that was down to Space Invaders
Pop up video from vh1 style
With the exception of the PS2, we got an xbox for that gen, we were and still are a Sony house, but my cousins had the 64/GameCube/and Dreamcast, I don’t remember much about the Dreamcast, except that the controller felt absolutely perfect in my hands, the weight, the hand position, everything about it felt more natural then all the other controllers, and always wished you could get controllers for modern consoles, but in the fit and form of retro controllers, with the couple extra buttons we have today.
How cool would it be to have a fully functional wireless PS5 controller, but it looks and feels like a Dreamcast or N64 controller? I’m surprised there isn’t a market for that already, with all the weird avenues console accessories have gone down over the years.
You mean gamepads.
I remember in the early 2000 getting an Playstation 2 for a christmas present
Consoles never get old
I’d rather have a ps2 than a ps3 I have a ps2 slim
But books always get old (:
Wait a minute how'd u get a Christmas present in the early 2000 like Christmas is in the end of the year or am I stupid
Abraham Chavez I think he meant the late 2000s
Stadia has joined the game 8:16
Stadia has left the game 8:16
Stadia tried to join the game but lagged out.
I mean. I think it sold like 50k total? Something so small it would be impossible to even sit beside the companies who haven't made consoles in forever
😂😂🤣🤣
Yeah he should update this
It seems Stadia is going down along side other horrible gaming systems, such as Lazer Active, CDI and 3D0.
Idk what's more impressive, Nintendo staying in the top 3 for so long or Sony rising to number 1 in such a short time.
As a Sony and Nintendo fan ( grew up with both) it's not surprising at all. I really wanna see this with the handhelds included too! Both consoles have such good ip's and memories for me.
The surprise is Nintendo is truly the only really committed video game company. Microsoft and Sony don’t do anything except make copies of copies of copies of old systems a little faster each generation. Nintendo is the only one pushing innovation. Without them, we wouldn’t have the thumbs sticks or gyro aiming.
@@Creshex8 Innovation ? You mean the Wii that was bought by millions of people just to play some bowling for a week and than put away in the closet next to the monopoly ? Or the 3ds where Nintendo stopped using the 3d because nobody was using it because of headache and than made the 2ds ? The WiiU a useless tablet that nobody understood it's utility ? You call it innovation, I call it a scam, a marketing strategy to impress people and hook them. The Switch was a great idea poorly executed : joycon drift , not confy at all , poor hardware.
Even games wise they port old Wii and WiiU games to the Switch . They are recyling old ip's over and over , Mario Kart, Smash, Super Mario, Mario Bros. rarely dev something new, in my opinion Nintendo was a pioneer in the gaming industry and made revolutionnary choices 30 years ago but now they are just outdated and out of touch . They are the boomers of the gaming industry.
From Ocarina of Time to Skyward Sword it was always the same formula .It took them litteraly 20 years to change the formula and made Link finaly jump when ever we wanted to in BOTW. Pokémon is the slowest evolving game in the gaming industry , so ironic coming from a game that is talking about evolution lmao. I know that Game Freak is behind that game but still , can't Nintendo just help them out do better ? The times of Nintendo's "Seal of Quality" are far behind.
And now in 2021 Nintendo recycles old Mario Party maps and mini-games and sell it full price and fans are happy. Their Nintendo Online service is so bad and unstable but now for a couple of extra cash you can play 9 N64 games and 9 Megadrive games on your Switch. Isn't that revolutionnary ?
@@liquidbruce9787 idk what u did with ur Wii... But I definitely played way more with that than any other console at the time... Still use my DS/3ds on occasion, switch is awesome (not super comfy I'll give u that, but easily remedied with a simple case or pro controller). Xbox/PS console wise are essentially just reskins with slight updates in power, performance, etc. They only stay alive because of the 3rd party game designers putting out the games. (Ik Nintendo gate keeps what games are available which is dumb on their part but I digress).
@@liquidbruce9787 sorry, but your response is really stupid. Ever hear of a game called Resident Evil 4? The game that showed the Wii pointer turning game’s handgun into a sniper rifle? That was just the beginning of Nintendo showing off the power of its new innovations. I had two generations of DS’s and they were my favorite portables of all time, with plenty of library to choose from… once again, the stylus system was absolutely amazing, and greatly sped up the interface. And now what do I do if I want to play Overwatch with gyro aiming on a console? Oh, make that practically any FPS shooter for that matter? Doom, Metro, etc? Can I go over to the PlayStation 4, which has had gyro on the controllers for a LOOOOOONG time and play some of those FPS games with it? How about the new PS5? Can’t go to Xbox, no gyro..:. So where do I go?????? Oh that’s right! The slower hybrid system, the Nintendo Switch!
So what’s the eta for gyro aiming on the PlayStation? Another 10 years? What an embarrassment. I rest my case.
Come back Sega. We need you.
