@@reichtanglevictor1694 And Sega officially stopped making consoles in 2001. It took the Xbox almost 10 years in a very hot console market to overtake a company who put up most of their sales in the 80s and 90s, a time when console ownership was significantly less common than it is today (as evidenced by how much more quickly the sales figures grow in the post-2000 portion of this video). That's not a slight against the Xbox or the 360, though, it's just a result of Microsoft's inability to break into Asian markets in their early days on the console market. If you're not viewed as a competitor to the likes of Sony & Nintendo in the large Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, etc. gaming markets, then of course you're going to struggle to catch up to those two
My first console was back around 1977, give or take. I was a gamer before gaming was a thing. Still to this day I love gaming and I’m now 52. What a ride it’s been seeing those early days of graphics etc compared to the graphics of today. I’m looking to seeing what the future brings.
Same brother. I’m 53. Been playing since pong. Seen and played every generation. What this video doesn’t reflect is pc gaming. Commodore 64 then a 386 pc and so on. I’m sure you were there too.
Yeah but in the 90s, it was big numbers for video games. It was not as known at that time. Sega & Nintendo contributed to that success. The Nes and the Snes are considered huge success. But if it was in our time, it would be a flop. Things have changed now
Don’t care how old or how unpopular the others are. They’ve all done their best to make the childhood of many great, and I would try every single one of them if I could.
It’s still Microsoft and Sony. This graph shows total consoles sold in the companies history. Nintendo has had consoles since the 70’s, so they look bigger at the end than they actually are. Lots of those sales are for older models.
Everyone remembers when the PS2 legitimately shattered records in its wake when it first came out. The PS2 was so influential to Sony's success in the Video game market. I still have mine proudly and it still works like a damn charm.
growing up we had to buy a couple more because they died but the one i have now has lasted a long time it died at one point and then came back to life some how and has no bad side effects from dying
I got a silver slim one that I've had for at least 15 years, would occasionally hope on it every once in a while to play Jurassic Park Operation Genesis and the OG Monster Hunter. Swear to god it actually performs better the older it gets, the loading times seem to be way faster then I remember, and I mean it's actually impressive how fast it loads.
The big issue with counting PS2 sales as "console sales" is that in the first half of it's active life it also was the cheapest DVD player on the market. I can still remember the days when half the kids in my elementary school, and their grand parents, had a PS2 but most had not much more than a demo disk that came with the system to play.
Video games today just aren’t as fun like they were back in the day so many game companies with lazy ideas and just focus on graphics its sad because I was a huuuggeee gamer but even today’s games I think ps2, ps3, GameCube, Xbox and Xbox 360 era will always be the best era ever. I still haven’t seen one game for PS5 that’s interesting at all
@@Vagorim I agree and another issue that I think doesn't get brought up as much is games are stale because there's only so many things you can do for a certain type of game with the same type of controller layout every generation.. it's not like when we went from Nintendo to Super Nintendo to PlayStation..I would say the last time it felt fresh was PlayStation 2 Xbox 360 days now you know okay this shooting game for PlayStation 5 is going to be the same button layout as it was for PlayStation 4 ps3 and ps2 and so on and so on for every game genre..only the graphics improve besides that we are getting the same things for the last 20 years basically..
You also got to remember. When the PS2 came out, it was the cheapest DVD player you could buy at that time. So a games station that also could play DVDs was a plus

Flamware The "Nintendo Playstation" aka Super Disc was originally a joint venture between Nintendo and Sony. It was supposed to be an add-on to the SNES but unfortunately Nintendo and Sony could not agree to terms involving licensing as Sony would have benefited heavily from software licensing and would be the sole benefactor from music and movie licensing since they would retain control over the Super Disc itself, something Nintendo was uncomfortable with as you could imagine. The prototype system was already being produced, along with software to support it before the deal finally collapsed. Going forward, Sony would focus on developing a competitor system for the next generation of consoles known as the Playstation (heavily inspired by the Super Disc). So at the end of the day, Nintendo essentially helped create the prototype of their biggest competitor.
Nintendo must of had an executive change at that time because they decided not to adapt to the current generation like Sony and xbox. They gave the current generation what they wanted and Nintendo fell behind.
I was born in 1993 and started off with a SNES and then I got a Sega Genesis and I've owned every Playstation to date. I'm a Playstation guy but I'm grateful for SNES and Sega for pulling me into the gaming world. A lot of great games on SNES and Sega for that time. My favorite was Megaman X on SNES and all the Sonic games on Sega. I played them for hours as a child
I'm glad Nintendo is still here fighting in the console business after more than 30 years and after the failure of Wiiu i'm happy they've found success again with the Switch. What a great time to be alive for Nintendo fans.
The Atari 2600 was the very first game console I played on in the 1980s! I still remember playing pac man on it! That was a major part of my childhood.
I was shocked that Atari didn't do anything with their lead and fizzled out. They were the top player, and if they had played their cards right, innovated, and were financially prudent, they would easily be above Sony today...
@@JosephDalrymple That happens a lot in business. Blockbuster suffered the same fate when they couldn't see the writing on the wall regarding streaming taking over the home video market. AT&T also was on the verge of collapse at one point when digital cell service appeared and they waited too long to get on the train; they eventually recovered largely due to iPhone exclusivity when it first came out. Like many leading companies Atari got complacent and rather than spend to innovate they tried to cling to the status quo and they paid for it. Only reason they stuck around as long as they did was because of the Lynx and Jaguar and their effort to take over the handheld market but the affordability and versatility of the Game Boy killed their hopes there as well.
The Atari 2600 was ubiquitous. It's the system that started the video game craze and so many people had them. Atari's downfall was that they designed and started producing the 7800, but then left it sitting on warehouse shelves until the NES came out and took over. Plus Nintendo actually offered to pay Atari to put their brand on the NES but they refused, a mistake they would regret. Regardless, Atari was a totally different company by then compared to the one Alan Bushnell created in the 70s, and now it's nothing but a brand.
I mean. I think it sold like 50k total? Something so small it would be impossible to even sit beside the companies who haven't made consoles in forever
It's not only the powerful hardware, but the affordablity (outside of PS3) and just massive game library + quality compared to the other producers. Which has given them a trustworthy name in gaming imo. Something Nintendo just recovered from after wii u and Microsoft has really yet to recover from
The PS4 Slim has been an amazing console for me since 2017. I love it's trimmed down size, yet it is able to run exactly the same as the original PS4. Sure, it can't run 4K graphics, but it can still play all of the games that I enjoy. Bigger specs doesn't always mean better console. This also reminds me of the Nintendo Switch, which I also have. Sure, it may not have the leading specs in the world, but it delivers a memorable experience just as any top of the line console will. My first console ever was actually the Wii, though, and I still have it today! My little mind was blown when I could play Super Mario Galaxy, Wii Sports, Lego Star Wars, you name it! I still have that same exact Wii today.
The ps4 and ps5 are just a ps3 2.0 and ps3 3.0. All visuals and performance to run the visuals but no gameplay evolution. Everything we have today can be rendered down and run fine on the ps3 with all the same gameplay

Yep and it was all Nintendo's fault. After the SNES CD was canned thanks to Nintendo's greed. Sony went to Sega who was looking to release any console that WASN'T the Saturn with Sega USA approaching everyone from Silicon Graphics(Later made the N64 chipset) to even Lockheed Martin the military contractor who makes fighter jets and Sony. Sega of Japan is at fault for this with them having a dislike for the American branch of the company and said no to all of them with the Saturn going in with almost zero 3D capabilities. The PlayStation was cheaper and had better 3D capabilities than the Saturn and made the N64 look like a baby console every 3rd party dev almost immediately jumped ship to Sony and also staying with Sega because Nintendo is the worst people to work for
@@niko1600 It was not Nintendo's greed. There were several factors behind their break up. The most circulated story is that Sony demanded 100% of the revenue, so from Nintendo's perspective, there was no point in spending money in a machine that would give them exactly ZERO profit. So it would actually be SONY's greed. However that doesn't mean it was all Sony's fault, as it is said that the deal was already sealed, in which case, then someone in Nintendo's legal team screwed up big time when they didn't read the fine print and put their signature in a document that was leaving them out of profit land. So, all in all, it was a very gray area (a sit usually is in real life) and both parties were responsible for what happened, but in the end, it was good for the medium - Sony's PlayStation brought mature games to the spotlight (beyond novelty games such as Cluster's Revenge or Mortal Kombat), which in turn allowed people to take games seriously and stop being considered toys for freaks. Also, the PlayStation brand saved Sony from the ruin, and Sony is a company that doesn't deserve to die. As for Nintendo, the split allowed them to diversify their activities and become the innovators they are now known as; and while they are not the best-selling company anymore, they are still successful. In any case, the one company who paid for that was SEGA. But they did have their share of blame as well. Just like PlayStation could have been a Nintendo brand, Xbox could have been a SEGA brand...

Same brother. I’m 53. Been playing since pong. Seen and played every generation. What this video doesn’t reflect is pc gaming. Commodore 64 then a 386 pc and so on. I’m sure you were there too.
Same here, i'm 52 and have been playing since the Atari 2600.

When you realize the first PlayStation alone sold more than Sega's whole career....
Yeah but in the 90s, it was big numbers for video games. It was not as known at that time. Sega & Nintendo contributed to that success. The Nes and the Snes are considered huge success. But if it was in our time, it would be a flop. Things have changed now

Idk what happened to my ps2 I might still have it but playing games on that and the original ps was the best.
They were built like tanks if got a good one.
PS2 PS3, Wii, DS, 360 days were golden. Take me back.
Video games today just aren’t as fun like they were back in the day so many game companies with lazy ideas and just focus on graphics its sad because I was a huuuggeee gamer but even today’s games I think ps2, ps3, GameCube, Xbox and Xbox 360 era will always be the best era ever. I still haven’t seen one game for PS5 that’s interesting at all
Can't forget the original PSP
ps boy is amazing too
Yeah those days was golden
Shenmue, Virtua Tennis and the Sega Dreamcast generally were so under appreciated.
Crazy Taxi too
You also got to remember. When the PS2 came out, it was the cheapest DVD player you could buy at that time.
So a games station that also could play DVDs was a plus
They did the same thing on the PS3 with a Blu-ray.

Nintendo will forever regret making the beta version of the Playstation......
What d y mean?
PlayStation is the king of games !!

I was shocked how long Atari stayed in the fight.
I was shocked that Atari didn't do anything with their lead and fizzled out. They were the top player, and if they had played their cards right, innovated, and were financially prudent, they would easily be above Sony today...
@@JosephDalrymple they were also the reason people stopped playing video games entirely
Look up the video game crash of 83
@@JosephDalrymple That happens a lot in business.
That caught my eye too. I didn’t even know they were still selling by 1988!

I had it too. Could play nes games on there too.
The ps4 and ps5 are just a ps3 2.0 and ps3 3.0. All visuals and performance to run the visuals but no gameplay evolution. Everything we have today can be rendered down and run fine on the ps3 with all the same gameplay
I mean you can play all the same games on the next gen version AND then get all the additional benefits but go off.

They are recyling old ip's over and over , Mario Kart, Smash, Super Mario, Mario Bros. rarely dev something new, in my opinion Nintendo was a pioneer in the gaming industry and made revolutionnary choices 30 years ago but now they are just outdated and out of touch . They are the boomers of the gaming industry.
From Ocarina of Time to Skyward Sword it was always the same formula .It took them litteraly 20 years to change the formula and made Link finaly jump when ever we wanted to in BOTW. Pokémon is the slowest evolving game in the gaming industry , so ironic coming from a game that is talking about evolution lmao. I know that Game Freak is behind that game but still , can't Nintendo just help them out do better ? The times of Nintendo's "Seal of Quality" are far behind.
And now in 2021 Nintendo recycles old Mario Party maps and mini-games and sell it full price and fans are happy. Their Nintendo Online service is so bad and unstable but now for a couple of extra cash you can play 9 N64 games and 9 Megadrive games on your Switch. Isn't that revolutionnary ?
@@liquidbruce9787 idk what u did with ur Wii... But I definitely played way more with that than any other console at the time... Still use my DS/3ds on occasion, switch is awesome (not super comfy I'll give u that, but easily remedied with a simple case or pro controller). Xbox/PS console wise are essentially just reskins with slight updates in power, performance, etc. They only stay alive because of the 3rd party game designers putting out the games. (Ik Nintendo gate keeps what games are available which is dumb on their part but I digress).
@@liquidbruce9787 sorry, but your response is really stupid. Ever hear of a game called Resident Evil 4? The game that showed the Wii pointer turning game’s handgun into a sniper rifle? That was just the beginning of Nintendo showing off the power of its new innovations. I had two generations of DS’s and they were my favorite portables of all time, with plenty of library to choose from… once again, the stylus system was absolutely amazing, and greatly sped up the interface. And now what do I do if I want to play Overwatch with gyro aiming on a console? Oh, make that practically any FPS shooter for that matter? Doom, Metro, etc? Can I go over to the PlayStation 4, which has had gyro on the controllers for a LOOOOOONG time and play some of those FPS games with it? How about the new PS5? Can’t go to Xbox, no gyro..:. So where do I go?????? Oh that’s right! The slower hybrid system, the Nintendo Switch!
So what’s the eta for gyro aiming on the PlayStation? Another 10 years? What an embarrassment. I rest my case.

Everything was fine, until the Playstation attacked
Greatest part is Nintendo made them do it, they could have ruled the world together.
Yeeeeeeee (I’m a PS4 player)
@@VeggiePopper Yeah Sega made one too many mistakes so when the Dreamcast came around which was better than the PlayStation no one cared. I wish Sega won over Nintendo as I like all the consoles from the time(PC Engine and Neo Geo included) but not Nintendo but I know why they sadly lost

I think cartridge in this sense implies a more complex device that can interact with the console, which is why some cartridges could add features that didn't exist in consoles. eg saving in Zelda. Modern cartridges are exclusively storage.
@@ThePyrosirys it also doesn't help that modern "cartridge" are also chip shaped,. i call them cartridges still just because i grew up with the old stuff but they do look and act more like a chip of some kind. (i suppose hypothetically it can be called a chip cartridge but whatever)

Ok sure
With the exception of the PS2, we got an xbox for that gen, we were and still are a Sony house, but my cousins had the 64/GameCube/and Dreamcast, I don’t remember much about the Dreamcast, except that the controller felt absolutely perfect in my hands, the weight, the hand position, everything about it felt more natural then all the other controllers, and always wished you could get controllers for modern consoles, but in the fit and form of retro controllers, with the couple extra buttons we have today.
How cool would it be to have a fully functional wireless PS5 controller, but it looks and feels like a Dreamcast or N64 controller? I’m surprised there isn’t a market for that already, with all the weird avenues console accessories have gone down over the years.
You mean gamepads.
