Bill Maher and Harvey Levin randomly riff on the Alec Baldwin case, Harvey’s 9-11 documentary (there was an extra plane), the generational differences at TMZ, when Harvey’s staff realized that he’s older than chips, the concept from Real Time of the national divorce, and Harvey’s heartbreaking, never-before-told story about why Cher is his favorite celebrity.

My brother was diagnosed in 1983. He refused to take AZT. 90% of his community in West Hollywood died. He’s alive and well and his HIV thanks to other meds is undetectable. ❤

Me I was in grad school at the time NYC. Lived in a huge 5BR apt. owned
by the University (Columbia). Two of those I was placed with were Gay --
so many of their friends visited. A few years later almost no one was left.
It changed the partying/bar behavior in NYC. I know it changed mine.
      (no more hookups I decreed)

He brought back that time. My partner and I lived with this terrible plague all around us in Dallas. Friends, even best friends, were struck like bolts of lightening, and it just took their energy. Young men were wasting away with ashen looks, many spotted with marks that made it a certainty. If they even maneuvered out, it was with the help of friends. Families rejected their sons and brothers, while others were sure this was all deserved. My partner and I had forty years together before he passed away. We did not have the disease, but we lived with it. The story shared by Harvey is so personal. It’s also too real. I’m so sorry he lost his partner so young.

Thanks for sharing, that was lovely. I often wonder if I would be loving and accepting like Cher or cold and judgemental, coming from a place of fear in those early days. I was in graduate school when this broke. It was preceded by an
Upper West Side HERPES scare - i.e. Herpes allegedly being in ALL
of the nyc bars. It made you THINK TWICE about having sex. Okay

I once interviewed a couple who catered celebrity parties at concert and theatre venues. They identified Cher as their favorite celebrity client--always kind and down to earth, cooking in the kitchen beside them. And when one local theater venue insisted that she use another caterer to oversee a post show dinner, she threw a special party afterward to round out the evening--just so her preferred caterer could serve the food at that event and make some money.

I am a 56 yr old lefty punk rocker, she has been there my whole life and I am pretty sure I will happily die without ever hearing that story because apparently she is nice....and that...unlike a lot of her music...rocks.

I remember when AIDS was first diagnosed and talked about and how it was a death sentence and how horrible people with AIDS were “treated” because as a new nurse I saw how other nurses and doctors didn’t even want to go in the room. I always treated all my patients like I wanted to be treated with dignity, compassion and above all RESPECT.

I had a family member contract aids from her husband around
the time period Harvey is speaking about. It was horrid to say the least
for anyone with the disease at that time !!!!! When my family member
was hospitalized there were doctors, nurses, other hospital employees
who refused to get near the patients. Except for a few angels disgusted
as doctors and nurses! They were overwhelmed. I seen very young men & women
In the hospital all alone suffering. They were abandoned by everyone they knew.
I can't & won't describe the terrible things I seen. It actually scarred me....
I am so happy there is a effective medication now! And no more stigma!!!!

I remember that time frame. Aids was a terrifying sickness then. If you were diagnosed it was a death sentence. And I remember gay or straight or whatever your preference was. If you had sex at all with more then one person in 40 years you were getting checked. I lived in a small farming community back in the eighties. We were about 6 years off the popular trends. I was 20 years old and sexually active a few years and legal drinking age was 19. A friend had a few lesions on her back, weakness in her joints and she just felt off and tired. In a town about 45 minutes away from us. They had a community health clinic. You could get tested for sexually transmitted diseases or actually anything you were concerned about. And get free Medical attention if you needed it. So that friend made appointments for our friends group to all get free tested for Aids. She was the first to go in. She showed them her lesions and told them EVERYTHING. They tested her for EVERYTHING. It turns out all of us were good. No Aids no other sexually transmitted diseases. Except our friend who set it up was diagnosed with M.S. If she hadn't gone in because she was concerned it was Aids she wouldn't of found out about Multiple Sclerosis. In that disease early diagnosis is the key to slowing the progression. And being able to treat the small things quickly before they become a huge thing that could hurt her and aggregate her health. She now walks with a cane. But she's doing great.

I didn’t know Harvey was gay either, he obviously is a very private person, even though he heads one of the “let me into your private life “ kind of firms lol . I can certainly empathize with him, everything he said is spot on. I lived through that horrific time and lost a great deal of friends and lovers .It is a horrible disease and you just watch your friends fade away into nothing. I can still see some of my friends who suffered so badly. you hear so many stories about the government and it’s so called involvement with AIDS that you don’t know what to believe anymore. All I know is that I truly miss my friends, I think about them so often a heart aches. 💔

The irony og Harvey Levin now making a living exposing people when in their most vulnerable state is not lost on me.
I remember his coverage of Britney Spears in her darkest hour.
