    Media Literacy Check: The point of my IG/Cara video isn't that Cara is immune from financial troubles, or that it'll definitely become culturally dominant. It's that small-account growth is non-existent on the big, indestructible social media platforms, and larger creators are either misguidedly or maliciously suggesting we (the small accounts) all stay on them, laboring endlessly to no results despite that.
    I think we shouldn't be discouraged from trying out sites where we have a better chance of growing and being seen, no matter how long they last. (If you watch the video, you'll have a good understanding of how to migrate a following if that happens.) Better than me sending art post after art post to insta only to have my content thrown in the trash by the algorithm because I didn't get a big enough account on the platform before a certain point in time, or, because I didn't pull in a large enough audience from off-site.

      First off lovely art and subbed. Secondly anyone lying about platforms to their fan base does not care about them and should be forgotten. I got hit hard as I am a photographer and artist. Adobe got me good. I still have insta but run everything through nightshade first just to mess with them. I lost my mojo for a bit but I am getting it back and leaning into traditional art again.

    I think the main problem I have with popular artists’ talking about Cara is that they misrepresent WHY people, especially smaller artists find the site appealing. The AI issue is only one part of the problem with Instagram. Another issue is the lack of artistic community. Cara is first and foremost an app built with artists in mind, so the dynamic between the people viewing the art and making the art is very different than Instagram. In my mind, Instagram is a marketing platform, and because of this, many of the people viewing your art will engage with it as a product rather than as art. This is advantageous to established artists looking to make money off of their work, but to hobbyists, managing a successful Instagram is probably going to feel like a second job. Cara, on the other hand, because it is an art platform, is opposite in its pros and cons. It is easier to develop actual community in Cara, but less easy to advertise your work as a product. That being said, I don’t fault these artists for wanting to stay at Instagram, but the misinformation and fearmongering is frustrating because you get the feeling that these artists want to be on the winning side of an argument they made up in their heads.

      So basically,
      Instagram = If you want to profit off of art
      (cons: your art is being fed into Meta's AI)
      Cara = Purely for art, no shady AIs, close-knitted art community
      (cons: marketing your art would be a lot harder)

    I am switching to Cara personally because A. Every time I've posted on insta my art has been spammed with comments I've had to delete asking to 'post my art' for exposure. B. I have tried posting frequently multiple times and it just has not worked out for me at all. C. Already when I posted my art to Cara I not only got comments actually appreciating my art and the time I took to make it, But the community seems way friendlier to smaller accounts starting out.
    I am not going to recommend jumping ship to Cara because that should be a personal choice for everyone to make, It's a small community as is and they aren't a big company like Meta.
    Honestly I find the insta artists being afraid of loosing their followings aren't realizing that Moving/ moved posts exist for this reason. Yes not all of your followers will follow you to a new platform, But if people really wanted to see your art they'd see the moving posts and follow you there.

    • @HikaTamika

      Thank you for your comment!! Omg, exactly, like, IG doesn't work out for every account, and continuing to pour effort on places where the app doesn't reward your-specific-account back is really draining. 🫠 So it's best for every individual to assess how things are going for them and balance their efforts to the sites that work our for them.
      And I agree, the people who really, *really* want to see your work will seek out your moving posts and make sure they're following you!

      Cool. I have never liked using Instagram for posting my art. Very rarely do I actually get someone saying "hey cool art!". Using IG was never good for my mental health either, as someone who already has history with mental illness it just kept feeding into my fear of not being good enough, because I felt like I got almost zero interaction or anyone even seeing my art. Even when I use maximum amount of tags, even when I've tried the "advice" people say how to use Instagram. None of the advice works... And yes I do think it's because Instagram only promotes the paying customers, and people who already have a big following. I don't think anyone should have to pay to even get any sliver of interaction. That to me feels very wrong... It's so anti-community it just makes me feel depressed. I want people of all skill levels and ages to come together and encourage each other, but I feel like IG does not allow for that to happen naturally. You have to pay or your art is thrown into a void where almost nobody will see it. I don't even care about becoming famous for my art either, but the lack of community and interaction thing is what's the most depressing IMO. It's like omg I worked on this piece for 30 hours and I feel like my art has developed to the next level. I want to show people and see what they think. Instagram: F*ck you, here's 3 bot accounts spamming to showcase your art at their page. If you're lucky you get 1 REAL PERSON commenting.

      I'm considering on adding more content and appeal to my portfolio website as I network with anyone i know from Discord
      Secondly, if i feel ready, I would post my art on different social media platforms made for artist before planning on what to do with Instagram, Twitter and TIktok.
      I wanted to focus on my personal projects as i feel like I wanted to get started on Inktober.
      Whatever it might be, I just wanted to network with people on Discord right now or at least accordingly as I'm trying to find a way that I feel content with.

    I agree that people are hyping and shitting on Cara at the same time. However, most big artist telling people not to delete their instagram accounts are just letting others know it’s too early in Cara’s career to completely abandon Instagram.
    Also the only people who are talking about Cara are artist(not all of them) if your using Instagram to potentially pay your bills then jumping ship this early might not be a good idea.
    Cara is made for artist mainly and networking but a lot of people assumed it was gonna be the next instagram at the time and jumped ship.

      Yeah, outside of connecting with other artists and art directors, I feel like only diehard (non-drawing) art enjoyers'll sign up on there. It's definitely an ArtStation or a DeviantArt alternative, but not something that'll be able to fill in for a general site like IG. Potentially something else could fill in, along the road, but, it wouldn't be a bad idea to hold onto one's IG for now, whether they remain active, or change their strategy while they smell out the Meta AI thing.

    "Don't let one app stay your master" -- even though I've scaled back my entire presence online for reasons*, this is SO TRUE AND CHEF'S KISS OF A LINE. For *years* we've known being on at least three platforms at the same time was a-okay! Then idk pandemic brain suddenly went haywire and now suddenly you just have to choose one. Like, w h y. I've seen a good chunk of the comics community just decide to only use Bsky and post jobs on there without even so much as an email as a main or alternative line of communication, and it's like...cool? Thanks for cutting out anyone else not on there, weeee. (Similar thing happened on Twitter and I thought we'd learn but I guess not.)
    And it's maybe hypocritical of me to really enjoy this video because someone finally said what I and others have been pointing out at times, when I haven't made an account on Cara...but my excuse is that I'm old and tired, haha. (Here's where that * goes.) I already tried the "hustle" once, and I rather would not have the aftermath happen again. I also agree, I could dislike a platform because example, it's VC-funded or something--but misinformation about that platform serves no one either. All it does nowadays is give you engagement for all the wrong reasons.
    The entire "leave slowly" section is great advice too o/

      Naw, I think it's okay to like this video's message even without a Cara account!! Because the way that (overly, harmfully,) bag-protecting IG artists diss Cara is the same way they dissuade/discourage people from trying out other platforms.
      As a BSky-head, it'd be nicer for people on there to leave contact emails w/ job offers, especially with how well Bridgy is working. Let everyone have a chance to respond.

They've already been caught multiple times using people's personal photos in advertising! It's not artists who should be worried, EVERYONE should be worried. The amount of deep fake porn getting made with AI and people's personal Instagram photos is horrific. They REALLY need to rethink their policies on the platform. It's why many left twitter for Blue sky too, it's super fishy what's going on over on Twitter these days.

You can live off your art without depending on the number of followers, hence with artist-centered websites and apps have the potential to thrive.

    finally! im sick and tired of artists i look up to calling cara an instagram alternative, then when people say that it isnt they are all like well it is just my opinion and i can say and do whatever i want, and is like okay but thats not very responsible is it, its not responsible to spread misinformation just cos you didnt want to do your research. alot of them speak without doing research and it annoys the hell outta me for real. I have been following zemotion for a really long time, the creator and i love what they are doing. I am probably going to fully move over to cara due to my small following on ig i have nothing to loose, big artists can stay on ig but no one will be there anymore when all the smaller artists move somewhere else

      I agree!! I think a lot of the problem comes from art-tubers all wanting to be the first person to make a video on the topic, to get a lot of views, abandoning researching entirely 😭. And if they use rumors/misinformation that sound scary, it generates a lot of attention. But they owe it to their audience to tell the truth. 🥺

    I don't think bigger artists are 'lying' per se. I think it's just less worth it for them to move. Some people are confused what Cara is supposed to be. It's not a direct clone / competitor to Instagram. Cara is more influenced by ArtStation and art Twitter than IG, in my opinion. Also, there are huge artists on Cara. They might not have the highest follower account, but they are famous in the industry for their work.

    The last half year I've been seeing nothing from Instagram in terms of growth or even actual eyes from my followers. my best performing post was my announcement I was leaving where it got 30 instead of 12 likes. I do believe there's a lot of overhyping and slandering of Cara on both sides. Artists big and small are making rash decisions, abandoning their platforms to hopefully find success in another. Meanwhile some people are making false accusations and slanderous statements for their own benefit. Both are bad imo.
    I'm a smaller artist who started on Cara, but I'm keeping Instagram as my main platform for now. I'm mainly seeing it as an opportunity to broaden my reach. It's a valid concern. The way things are looking, the accounts that were big elsewhere are having an easier start, but small accounts are liking and commenting on each others' stuff and using the share function to push each-others' art to new people.
      I think if us smaller people share our followers with each other in that way, it can have an exponential effect and we can grow well too.

    • @meikahidenori
      @meikahidenori 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It depends. My issue is people will take twitter, Instagram & Blue Sky's lack of reposting & sharing attitudes across with them. It's why Deviant died for me years ago - despite them adding more ways for people to engage, many didn't like feedback and attacked any attempt at it outright turning artists into snobs who only shared their work and not help others on the platform (I am an EX DA senior member & Senior mentor and saw all that first hand - it was awful).
      Now I'm not expecting big artists to do this, however Cara does this WONDERFUL thing where your Timeline is separate from your folio allowing you to not only post your work where you can show it off and people can veiw it anytime they like, it allows you to SHARE other's work and spread it through the app. If people remember this and use that timeline to share work they find that's cool, interesting, needs love we could have the start of a nice community!
      Now, I've been around a LONG time, had MANY accounts on various platforms, had art stolen, traced ect... but I've never been a big name artist - more like a very very niche one but many a time I find the issue when jumping ship to anywhere if you're small is when you can't constantly keep using the ones user handle/pen-name. If people loose you, as long as you don't change your user ID moniker people will eventually find you again, wherever you may end up. Those who are your truest fans are the ones who will actively find/seek you out again. Sure they might not be the greatest in number, but numbers shouldn't matter because they cannot tell you who your real fans are. The real ones are ones who comment, or if they're shy, share your work onto thier timeline for more to see. I've had several people I know follow me from DA back in the day over say... 4 platforms? 5 for one very tenacious and wonderful fan. It may not be the thousands people wish their art could reach but those few people who do track me down again are some I treasure deeply and have gotten to know too. Heck I've even done the same with several artists who I've watched grow so much bigger and more spectacular than I could ever be and it fills me with incredible joy watching them grow into amazing creatives.
      That's what true fans & a true community is like.

    I think the argument that "Cara is made only for artists" isn't the horrible thing it's made out to be. "A site made for artists" is what DeviantArt was, and it had a thriving community until it too screwed over its userbase. I would have stayed on DA regardless, but so many people left that interaction there is now just as abysmal as Instagram.
    I've been pretty happy with Cara. It took some time for me to start getting interactions, but (as few as it is) I'm already getting more interaction than anywhere else. There's no algorithms (cross fingers "Yet") and organic growth is finally a possibility again there.

    What kind of "artists" are you following on IG? Most of the artist I follow do have Cara and respect it, having them 10k o 15k followers themselves. But what some had said, and I share the concept, is to not take a complete switch. Cara work for some things IG don't, and IG works for some things that, currently, Cara don't. Therefore, they recommend not ditching one for the other. And most of them agree that, regardless of what SM you choose to engage with, open your own site.
    This video sounds way more about the so called artist you're following and less about the apps.

      The IG artists that said the things that inspired this video, used TH-cam as their platform for saying the things I talked about. Not IG text-on-a-square posts or their stories. On top of that, I didn't even really follow them. It was more of a TH-cam Recommended Bar situation.
      And yeah, this is a rebuttal video specifically to their *points*.
      All that said, I fear internet drama and inciting stuff so I don't want to go out and say "[ArtTuber A, ArtTuber B, and ArtTuber C] (by name) were dogging on Cara!!" online, cause doing that anywhere where you garner attention is more or less telling people "sic' em, boys!!" and I don't wanna do that.

    I'm not on Cara to sell art, or indeed to sell anything, so this doesn't bother me one bit. I actually LIKE to have one place where I hang out, and another place where I sell things. I have to say that I see Cara as having a good future, in one hand because it is what artists have wanted for a long time, on the other I see it, in the future and with more updates, as an app for "truly" creative minds (music , voice actors, animetion, sculptors, photographers, maybe models too, I say this because of the portfolio option) and maybe it will open the doors for more "indirect" collaboration options. Ex: If they would allow us to add a voice or music to a post , that it is created and published by someone from the app itself, and that credits and a link to the profile appear in our post (also if the person don't want this, I would add an option in the configuration that activates or deactivates this).
    In my case I have not made a profile yet, although I am interested, but I want to wait a while and see how the app goes.
    Since I want to upload various comics from different fandoms and I don't know if the app would do that well, in addition to how to organize it, I know that there are hagstags (PD: Love that they are well funtional

      @@HikaTamikaFirst, you're welcome! and it's nothing, be kind, I think it's important to express your ideas and opinions respectfully.
      TRUE!! I admit that I forget about communities, but I remember, I think, that a week ago Tumbler made a post about giving more people the opportunity to have one!! That's how users seem to like it.
      But this makes me think of something, which makes me see Cara = Tumbler (not 100%, but more like Cara is, perhaps, going on the right path) and is that the attention of the developers or programmers? (those who maintain the app) On Tumbler they have an account where they sometimes post about updates and BUG FIXES (big and small), and things that come up, and on Cara they listen very well to people's opinions to make applications better or more focused on their audience, the reason why they both feel closer and warmer? the thing they have and fell the human care for the joy of the users, make them really cool
      Another thing that I also think about is the opportunity for the art community; I mean a NEW space for interaction, which allows users to be able to give precisely those opinions or constructive advice as a bases, which seems wonderful to me and I feel (maybe this beging too much, but important) that as users we need to "protect" or rather maintain, remember the why?, because in this way we can create A mutual learning space;
      And if you don't like advice (especially kinds and respecfully ones), don't respond reluctantly. It's an advice, you can either read it and take it in mind or not and leave it.

    Comment for the Algorithm: Gouache is a water-soluble, opaque paint that's made from pigments, gum arabic, and water. The term originated in France in the 18th century. Gouache is similar to watercolor, but it contains more binder and white pigment to make it opaque and prevent the paper's white surface from showing through. The paint's heavy pigment load and reduced binder content leave behind almost pure pigment when dry, held together by just enough binder.

    I havent been watching much videos on Cara but i watched one where an artist said that Cara is run by a small team and itd be difficult for the team that are freelancers to try and keep the site up and keep up with the bugs and updates. These big artist could be trying to gatekeep but also we cant keep pushing a lot of traffic to that website its a small team

    Awesome video with a lot of really good points, especially for smaller creators. I'm loving Cara so far - it really feels a lot more community minded. And I think being for artists first and foremost helps with that because we're all kind of there for the same stuff; appreciating one another's works. There's so much great stuff on there.

    Thank you for talking about this, I feel like a lot of artists are hopping on the bandwagon that “cara will end up like all the others” because it’s easier to not move platforms and not get your hopes up than it is to just put a speck of faith into a growing art community that actually cares about its users.
    It’s really sad to hear people dismissing Cara when they havent even tried it

    I've never really downloaded Instagram. I'm a younger artist as well. Is it recommended that I download Cara and post there, even if it's not the greatest in the world? The community seems nice 4 the most part! :)

      I'd recommend it! Post in, and search for hashtags relevant to you so you can find other artists in your niche, and engage w/ em! Some might become future friends.

    I disagree that the reason big artists are saying Cara won't work is to manipulate the public for their own gain at the expense of smaller artists, because they already have their followers and don't want to lose them. I think people in general are just tired of hearing everyone saying "jump ship" and nothing ever sticks. And they're voicing their own cynical opinions.
    Big artists are just people, and they are susceptible to misinformation the same as anyone else. This is also an age where people can't bother to fact check and just accept any rumor they hear.
    Still, this video is extremely important and I'm so glad you made it, and so glad the algorithm seems to be pushing it out. Artists really need to diversify, and Cara sounds like a great place made for artists by artists, and smaller artists might have a better chance too if they don't have to fight the algorithm every step, that is a really good thing to point out. Sure, it's small, it looks a bit vulnerable, but every site has to start somewhere, and this one is starting strong actually!
    Also thank you for clearing up the misinformation about Cara, Nightshade and Glaze, and encouraging people to use them. And great note at the end about how migrating to a new website can absolutely be a slow process, and you don't have to abandon everything you had 100%.
    Very important video, thank you!

      Thank *you*! For your insightful comment and for watching! It means a lot.
      I don't want small artists to miss out on new connections they can forge without having to battle small-artist-unfriendly algorithms. 🙏💜

    Thanks for the video. I also have a small account but I have become more uncomfortable with both IG and Twitter. Unfortunately, much of the discourse has seem to conclude that there is nowhere else for artist to go, but I like the ideas you mentioned in the video. Definitely might try out Cara and even Tumblr again just see what works for me. Also your character is super cute!!!

    This was a great vid! I’m glad someone’s calling out the bigger creators on instagram/youtube. I think it’s telling that a lot of creators in the IG art community engage in trends that ask for more followers (“lets be art moots/follow and I’ll follow back” or the dreaded “reduce your expectations to 0” when they already have thousands of followers 💀💀) only to not support smaller artists and then they pretend that Cara is somehow going to sabotage everyone. Make no mistake these large creators benefit from you staying on IG, and they’re not actually looking out for the art community as a whole.

    • @HikaTamika
      @HikaTamika  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      😂🤝 Omg the "reduce your expectations to 0" plague, lol… One of the worst trends on there.
      Thank you for your comment! I wish larger creators would think more about the wellbeing of the whole community compared to what's working best for them. Especially when the opportunities and algorithms aren't the same anymore.

    Thank you for talking about this, I don’t mind being a smaller creator atm but seeing how the current social media landscapes treats artists is incredibly disheartening and discouraging and I’d like to see bigger artists AT LEAST give Cara a chance before dismissing it altogether

  • @bigdadbeefsticks
    @bigdadbeefsticks 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    What? I'm surprised by both this video and the comments. All the big (or otherwise) artists i follow are mega into Cara. The only thing they ever really say against it is more like "I understand that a lot of people won't make the switch because they've already built a following that they rely on on Instagram" that and if you're trying to reach non-artists then platforms like Twitter and instagram are seemingly more appealing even if they aren't artist-friendly platforms. Had no idea there was anti-Cara corporate shilling going on. Idk how i missed it 😂

  • @davidriki959
    @davidriki959 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Well if people do followed you for your arts then it's not too difficult to restart in Cara. Me personally, nobody give a damn about my art the last 10 years so when I go to Cara, I barely have any one to bat an eye at my works. But at the same time I also... don't care?
    I still post on IG and Cara at the same time, I'm at the point of not really care about what going to happen anymore. I accepted my failure as an artist, and just vibing. So I do think it's good to just using both at the same time and over time, slowly decide to drop IG if Cara is working out for you!

    Thank you for this video. Like the amount of random Cara hate is getting ridiculous. When I first saw it, I always thought that it was suppose to be similar to art station not instagram. But people keep trying to compare the two. I’m not posting on there yet because my art isn’t that polish but I’m going to give Artfol and Bluesky another try and also will start glazing.
