hi all! 👋
today i wanted to chat about a couple different social media platforms from an artist's perspective, and my own experience posting art on each. ultimately, i think the decision of which platform to post your art on boils down to the needs and preferences of each individual artist. i also feel it's advantageous to post on a couple of sites, especially if you're aiming to broaden your reach for your work!

@@Ultrikadrawznah, it’s not just you, Cara is never going to be a good platform for artists to grow because there’s no one else on it BUT artists. Unless it goes mainstream and has a significant increase in NON-artist users, it’s never going to be a viable platform. It’s fine for conversing with other artists, but that’s about it.
I’m interested in Cara. Is it good for uploading comic pages by chance?
You're only likely going to grow on Cara is if you already have a large following on different platforms and said followers care enough to make an account on Cara to follow you (unlikely)
as someone whos on the art side of tiktok, i'd highly recommend NOT posting art there. tiktok is a veeeery slippery slope when it comes to the algorithm and it's a reason why most well known artists on tiktok are problematic, they add shock value to their content so their art is seen. i've only just recently came back to youtube and its such a refresher, this video was awesome keep it up!!! :)

TikTok really likes hitting artists like myself with content violations and shadowbanning people for tiny stuff that really makes no sense.
I'm a bit confused with the problematic part. Is it like how they treat other people or how they're creating their content, etc.?
@@adorableredfox it can be either one. there’s people who make rage bait content by saying things that are racist, homophobic, transphobic, ableist and much more. and then there’s things like “art lore” which is pretty much people making fun of beginner artists trying to learn. it’s a very toxic community

As someone who’s on Tumblr as a main, it’s the same for me- I can’t really post any oc art without it flopping HARD, but when I do post fanart it usually thrives. Which is what happened to me when I first posted there, (though it isn’t that big of a problem now as I’m now a multi-fandom artist) I personally think that it’s a platform that’s just mostly for fandom content, so it’s not as flexible, and you don’t get as much reach if you don’t draw much fanart in a lot of cases. But one thing that I like about Tumblr is how it doesn’t show the amount of followers you have, so there isn’t as much of a follower mentality there. It’s also easier to interact with your audience through like inboxes and all that. The people there are also mostly supportive with a few bad apples, but that’s most platforms. You can also filter through your post by using different tags which is pretty neat. But it also have a major bot and add problem, throughout my use I’ve seen a lot of nsfw adds that really shouldn’t be there, as well as bots sometimes invading people’s posts and what not. There’s also the fact that your following feed is usually flooded with reblogs and stuff, which some people might not like, though I personally don’t mind. But aside from that I think it can be a good site.
Sorry for this really long and messy comment, I just thought that I should give another perspective on it, as someone who mains Tumblr-
TLDR; Tumblr is fandom oriented, has a bot and add(nsfw) problem, but is also easy to interact with your audience.
And also loved the video, your art is so adorable!!
What some people do for the case of OC art not getting much attention, is combining OC art with Fanart. Draw your OCs next to characters from the fandoms you tend to draw, or make comics of what it would be if they knew each other. People usually tend to get curious like "Who is this? Is this a new character I'm not knowing of?" And they start to engage in your content a lot more just for curiosity, and may actually end up liking your OC after seeing so much of them.

As an artist, I reccomend for people Newgrounds. Why?
Here are why:
-You can do everything You want! (except some things, like racism, homophobia and ETC.) Like art, movies, songs, games and more
-Its highly interactive, it has forums, collabs, events, chat, so You can write with people.
-Its anti-AI. When moderation will see, that art is made with AI, it will be deleted.
-It has "Save and Blamed" system, so site isn't bin of awful drawings. Oh, and star system too!
The only con that I see, that is site is a bit edgy. So if You are young, don't sign in!
I don't know what to say more, but I'm happy, that I showed it. If someone wants to tell me something that I missed, I would be grateful. Bye!

i've been wanting to start posting on there, but honestly i'm kinda scared to. i'm sure the people on there are mostly chill but i'm just scared of getting a bunch of hate for drawing "cringe" things
From my own experiences on cara, the community is really kind and supportive! Which is really refreshing compared to Instagram. No toxicity, no ads, just support towards fellow artists and talented people sharing their creativity! Yeah for me it's a little hard to find a reach, but that could be because of the type of art I usually post which is more on the simple cartoony side. (Not to mention it's mostly furry/mlp art) but just seeing the other talented people who post there, just makes me happy ^^
Sooo just so everybody knows, Cara is still in beta. I think a lot of people forgot to mention this. So I'm guessing the developers didn't expect that much traffic. It's a bit much for them right now, and they're trying to get stuff handled. So I would say Unless you must post on cara I would wait to join. For the sake of the developers 😅

In beta means still working on features, Ao3 has been in beta for at least a decade. What matters is the original scope of what Cara's devs wanted and after it went viral during the fleeing off insta, the devs got hit with a nasty bill because of how much extra server space they needed to keep up with the demand. Safe to assume at the very least they expected more gradual growth than what happened

Cara is kinda the best place and also not
Pros: people there are positive and supportive
Cons: still less known site, it takes years for site to be known by everyone (outside ART niche)

I would definitely agreed with your point regarding to Tumblr beings seen as a sharing fandom site rather than an general art hub.
From my experiences with using the site dating back all the way to when I was 12 (mid 2016, wow I’m getting old), I’ve always judged it remotely to sharing and finding specifics fandom I was in at the time such as cartoons that were airing and video games gaining popularity ( Star vs the forces of evil, Trolls -2016-, Undertale, Steven Universe, and Miraculous Ladybug for prime things I was following at the time and between my teenhood.)
Even now, I think I’ll never separate myself from it’s originally intended to be used for and with my examples just emphasizing points of making yourself as a popular artist on Tumblr is focusing on fan content only, at least it’s not the worse thing in the world.
i agree! i feel like the culture of that site really favors fanart in particular, so artists who make a lot of fanart may have the most chance to get discovered. which yeah is not necessarily a bad thing it's just the way tumblr is xD

I was confused at first because I recognized the program. Then realized. ITS IN LIGHT MODE
my main has still been deviantart. well my main purpose with posting my art is for me personally lol i did that so i have a gallery i can look back on and just see all my works. me posting on other sites were because of needs. it started with school requirement, where we do commissions. i also wanted to have more reach, so decided to go with multiple sites. maybe i got too carried away lol i started creating accounts for several other platforms, including cara, my most recent account. so many, i decided to cut back and only posts on certain platforms depending on what i will post. like how i will only post in gamejolt if i made fanart from the gaming world (including gamers) or will only post in reddit when i made fanart from a certain fandom.
my main account will be deviantart, my gallery where all of my finished artworks will go. it is also my very first account, so i can't just separate myself from there, despite how bad it's gotten now. twitter will be my second, and will be where i could post my sketches and such. maybe i will make cara my third, where it will be both my art post and sketch post, cause like you said, i so far like the way you can direct if you want your post to be included in portfolio or not.
I agree with Tumblr about it being mainly fandom stuff. I feel like you gotta be pretty popular from other platforms already to get non-fandom art to be seen. I my most popular posts on there is fanart for a vtuber while my more personal/OC art doesn't get as much reach (then again I post once in a blue moon so that might play into it too lol)
I've never gotten into Deviantart, but from what I've been seeing and hearing, Deviantart used to be really fun. So I think I'll check out Sheezy and see how that goes :P

This is one reason i chose TH-cam to start posting my art in. I felt it vould be a little more personal to try and create videos and get to interact with an audience that way.
I still want to consider adding one more place to post my art, and this was great to give me some ideas of where to start looking.

Artfol is getting a big update soon, fixing a lot of the major bugs and quirks, and the devs are working super hard on it, so I hope it gets a boost of users soon! I’ve been an Artfol main recently due to the chill atmosphere and it’s wonderful! Everyone there is so sweet and positive!

i mean, pinterest is a feeding ground for stolen art, & more often than not others would assume that you’re just reposting and are not the artist without further research. not to mention it barely has a social fanbase other than memes and most fan art
oh yeah that is a solid point. i've heard of some artists having good experiences with it but the cons should definitely not be ignored ^^'

I use to post Art on Instagram but i stopped because I randomly lost confidence in my own art. I still draw but don't post anymore. I also use to post my Art onto ArtStation but that stopped to. Honestly didnt feel like there was a community there either. 😅 Id love to post again and this helped a lot. May check those places out
Thank you for posting this video. I appreciate how helpful and positive you are. I stopped posting for a while on instagram. When I came back it seemed completely different and doesn’t suit my needs or wants as an artist. After years of instagram being my main platform I think I’ll be transitioning more to tumblr and Cara. Your experience makes me hopeful for Cara. I’ve had a tumblr for a while now but only recently started posting. The interactions are sweet and it’s easier to get seen compared to Artfol and twitter (in my experience)

I havent finished watching this- but i wanted to point out that instagram also has a "trial" reel option. In which you post something and it doesn't appear to your followers, so you can be silly and goofy and no one you know will ever see it :D unless you add it to your normal feed later which is a toggle option

Hi I am a small artist and I am not new to posting on TH-cam and I am still trying to figure out what kind of videos I should post for my channels. The most that I did were speed paintings and it usually takes a month or more to produce one. depending on if and when I get an artwork done. But I am trying to expand my horizon with the platforms I am using and tried posting on each one. it's kind of tiring sometimes and can easily be demotivating to do so. Between balancing work and creating art is a struggle for me overall.

FB is not bad for building a community too. If you have a decent luck ur friends will react to what you created everytime. Or you could share it to groups
Mastodon is cool, with a decently sized community of artists. Most servers are very vigilant about moderating hate speech, and block the servers that let it run rampant, which is a refreshing change of pace.

Honestly, I'm at a bit of an impasse here; I dont have a large number of followers, but I'm slowly growing on Instagram. My biggest concern with Cara is that it is mainly used by artists, so the market would be very competitive compared to Instagram. But I really don't want my creative worls to fuel generative ai. I'm at a loss.
I see a lot of artist grow in like less than a year. I’ve been posting since march of this year but my channel seems to just not grow, I’m stuck with less than 400 subs😢
for me tumblr is amazing for fandom spaces and im someone who only draws fanart LMAO but its different for everyone :P
Hi! I have an art technique question, if you don't mind answering. Around 2:18 you make such an even outline of white around your character which not only looks great but I imagine helps with filling in the color faster later. Where you using a tool with the line art or doing it by hand? Either way how did you get it so even?
Some art programs have this thing called "bleeding" that will add an outline of the chosen color around whats on the selected layer maybe they used that?
i used the monoline brush in procreate with the settings changed a bit to make the overall brush a lot bigger and manually traced around the character trying to make the white outline around it as even as possible, then i just color drop-filled in the rest of the shape after with white! it's sort of the "hard" way, i think there are more technically advanced and efficient ways to do it but when using procreate that's the easiest way for me personally to achieve that effect xD

Definitely big help for me, after I get my iPad soon this year I'm planning on starting a art account (been thinking about it for decades lol) but this time I think I'm for real and ON it and can't wait! Also I'm thinking about using Snapchat as content art creator can that be suitable?

I actually hate instagram reels and the hashtags don’t work. The audience will be looking at the top posts instead of recent ones. For the reels, I heard from artists they get hate comments on it so I don’t want to use the reels and hate it. As a beginning artist, my art is not getting noticed 😢
Right now I’m trying not to give up because of the stupid reels and hashtags. It’s not gonna stop me from making art

As an artist on Instagram trying to post to other places, it is very hard to grow an audience, at least from my experience. I have been trying to post onto Cara but my art is never promoted. And since I am also a full-time student who has a part-time job, my infrequent ability to post really stunts my ability to grow in the algorithm, whether that be on Instagram or Cara. Honestly and in my opinion, as long as you are able to constantly feed the algorithm, you will get pushed out more. If you are unable to post anything then you might as well be buried.
Another thing about Cara is I wish you were able to post videos without needing to attach a link. Cara allows gifs but not videos from one’s camera roll and that bothers me a little bit.

I'm kinda late to this but honestly hashtags on twitter should be used sparingly. I mainly use them for specific trends where submissions r under hashtags, or for certain things like when I post K-pop fanart. Otherwise, the less hashtags the better. 1-2 is the sweet spot but even then I wouldn't use it on every post. Hashtags don't even work like insta ones so they don't actually improve ur reach one way or the other.

Is video editing absolutely necessary to promote art? It’s so much work on top of creating art in the first place. I miss the days when IG was for photos and a nice finished piece could get engagement without having to solo produce and direct and star in a mini behind the scenes documentary.

You could also try coding a platform with html, things like neocities or just doing it from scratch straight from the file can make you a nice website that isn’t controlled by other people and can make a nice way for you to share your work, that’s just a suggestion tho hehe.
I personally don’t like Cara that much cause no one sees my art there and it’s hard to get engagement
