    I'm dealing with this same problem with my wife's 2012 Buick Enclave. I found a mechanic's write up explaining that it was a mixture of poor engineering, greed, and possible stupidity that lead GM to produce a PCV "valve" that wasn't a valve at all. They produced that part to appear like a valve, but there's no apparatus inside to control the pressure flow either way. It began causing so many downstream problems because it was susceptible to getting coated with oil (poor fuel economy, oil leaks, oil coated spark plugs, plugged cats, blow by, gunked up oil that wouldn't lubricate then get hot and ruin timing chains etc.) that GM made service bulletins for these issues.
    They didn't actually change the known problem which was simply making a true PCV valve that did the job. I feel much more clear about the watershed of events leading to this whole host of problems now and instead of chasing what seems like half a dozen unrelated issues I can see how they all come back to a crummy design that they left in for years. Of course they then redesigned it to make it a true valve in 2013, but you can't order that part at all nonetheless for older vehicle years. GM wants you to buy the same steel straw, but drill bigger holes in it and replace the valve cover gasket. They covered up that valve redesign with a facelift in 2013 as well because I guess a pretty car distracts from shafting people over an easy to fix problem.
    Between selling umpteen different parts that didn't fix the issue and complete engine replacements for people's expensive cars I'm sure GM made a mint on this when the problem would have been halfway solved with a proper valve that would cost the owner maybe $20.

    Thanks for the video. I just replaced the valve cover gaskets. I modified the PS reservoir bracket by using the Dremmel tool with metal saw wheel to cut two holes on the side downward. So, the next time I don't have to unscrew these bolts all the way out. Just unscrew enough to pull up the bracket out. It also make it easy to put it back in too. For one of bolts laid underneath of lower manifold, remove it with an offset 10mm wrench. I did not remove the fuse box. I only removed the PS reservoir front hose. I was unable to remove the back hose, so I left the PS there while changing the gasket. The job is easier if the PS reservoir is completely removed.

    Paul, I did not have to remove the motor mount. I remember having to remove the 10mm bolts with an open end wrench then use my fingers to work them out.

    Hello yes it did fix the oil consumption. The intake duct is still completely dry. I believe the new design valve cover gaskets is what fixed the problem.

    Thanks for the post Great Job! For those like myself trying to fix this and save some money. Try cleaning all that gunk out and blow the tube clear with compressed air or air hose. The gaskets shown here can be replaced for around $30. Good luck to anyone who takes this on.

      How long did it take you to complete this job? I have seen people talked about a hardest bolt to get it out from the low intake manifold. Based on your experience, any advice to tackle this bolt and removing the steering reservoir bolts that you can give. Thanks.

    Was contemplating replacing the head gaskets, but seems like just replacing both covers would be a better choice.

    I tightened them all down clockwise starting from the center, the bolts should bottom out and snug hand tight. I used an electric 1/4 impact.

    There is one bolt on the LH valve cover that touches the lower intake but I was able to turn it all the way out and remove it with it in the valve cover, I already mentioned the two 10mm bolts on the side of head for the power steering bracket that are a pain to get to

    That’s not actually a PCV “Valve” it’s a stem that controls the pressure differential much like a PCV would do. Nonetheless, I had a brand new engine replaced under warranty on my 2015 Traverse (same DT as the Acadia) and the stem was faulty in the sense that rather the small holes on the bottom and one on top it was blown clean through like it had been sheered off and essentially no pressure differential and acting just like a straw. I figured this out to which the GM dealership couldn’t, they had put my vehicle on an oil monitoring program given it was sucking oil into the intake and they couldn’t figure out why? It was a $20 part at NAPA here in Western Canada and I changed it out myself. Looks like my oil consumption issue is now gone. If you’re in an oil consumptions situation it’s a quick and easy check; small vice grips and gingerly work the stem out, and there’s lots of videos on how to bore out the holes on the net to a proper spec to ensure they don’t plug. And albeit we’ve always drove Chevy’s this one has caused me my fair share of aggravation! I’m really liking my new Honda.

    GetDEAN, I am attempting to replace both the left and right valve cover gaskets on my 2010 GMC Acadia because there is oil inside the back plugs; however, I don't know how to move the power steering bracket and hard line so that I may lift the actual valve cover gasket off. Do you have any advice on how to do this? Your video helps, but doesn't show that step.

    did you happen to have your dic panel throw warnings like service stablitrak, awd off, service abs, fuel gauge not working, and other problems after. this all happened to me after I put everything together also had codes p0452, and p0462. everything was ok before hand. also for the viewers that do not want to replace the valve cover the gasket set at oreily's is the updated gasket.

      larry whiteman, did you figure out the cause of all of your codes?

    • @PaulysAuto
      @PaulysAuto 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      P0452, you have a fuel tank pressure sensor code-unlikely it's related. You need to seal the EVAP system with a scan tool and open the purge valve to pull vacuum on the EVAP system, then close the purge valve and monitor fuel tank pressure sensor pid to determine if it's reporting accurately. Mind you once you pull a vacuum on EVAP system with Vent solenoid closed and purge valve commanded to 0% duty cycle or completely in an off state...you should be holding vacuum without decay and the fuel tank pressure sensor should be changing voltage and showing that the system is in a vacuum...if not check it's voltage on scan tool with it unplugged, if it reads 5V, check its ground with test light hooked to battery positive, if it lights then the sensor ground is ok and the sensor is bad. If you're losing vacuum with sealed system then you have a leak.
      As for DTC P0462, that is likely a faulty fuel level sensor integral to the fuel pump assy, that's why your fuel gauge is inop...likely need a new fuel pump to fix properly-GET OEM PUMP!!!
      Without TESTING electrically you're just guessing, but these are common problems with these vehicles.
      I realize I am late to the game, but if anyone else is wondering it may be helpful...good luck.

      +Jon - Hand Tight! It's only keeping the Oil from " Splashing " all over the place. Plus you don't want to " Kill " your Gasket! NOTE: Check after a Week or so to see if " ANY " Oil around there. If YES, than tight it about " Half " turn so it be a bit tighter.

    I meant you could have as well solved the problem by Drilling larger Holes on the
    PCV valve so it won’t be stoked by oil ? But buying the newly modified Valve cover
    Is as well a good solution , but drilling the PCV with larger holes can it solve this issue
    as well ?
    Thanks .

      Is what I did in my 2007 outlook, no mo oil in the tb or snorkel, I’m planning in replace the valve covers because they are leaking oil

    • @jjtransman6353
      @jjtransman6353 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oil was being sucked up into the PCV orifice and deposited blocking it off causing high oil consumption. To solve this, the new valve cover gasket blocks off the back of the valve cover acting like a baffle but leaving three hole for flow. That solves excess oil Vapor depositing in the PCV.. But if you didn't clean out the PCV orifice which really it's not a PCV valve but rather an orifice, you won't get the benefit of that valve cover gasket update.

    Did this fix your oil consumption problem? My 2010 Acadia is consuming 2.5 quarts between 3000 mile oil changes. It has nearly 100k miles now and the dealer just wants to "monitor" it because they seem to think consuming 2.5 quarts is acceptable.
