  • ▶️Losing Oil GM 3.6 How To FIX🔧.This common problem is pretty much inevitable with GM 3.6L engines. When the PCV system has restriction, the system fails to evacuate the pressure in the engine crank case causing extreme pressure. This will eventually lead to blown out valve cover gaskets, leaking cam seals, rear main seal, front main seal and will eventually leak past your valve stem seals causing your engine to burn oil in the combustion chamber.

      @Nthefastlane hello is this problem the same in the 2011 Cadillac CTS Luxury?

    • @Nthefastlane
      @Nthefastlane  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Spell Breaker I would say it possibly is. The 2011 CTS uses the 3.6 LLT engines. The 2006 STS in this video uses the LY7 but they are very similar 3.6"s.

    I did this on a transverse mounted 2012 Impala 3.6. Thanks for the tip on the clip I would have never figured it out. To get to the PCV was a tight access. The PCV was in there pretty tight. I started by using a curved pry tool like a mini crowbar and tapped it minimally as a wedge using a hammer between the PCV and the plastic. This dislodged the PCV enough to insert a trim remover tool and with more minimal hammer tapping on the butt handle of the trim remover tool, lifted the PVC out. To reinsert, I used two socket extenders with a swivel on the part I placed over the nipple top of the PVC to tap it down into the seat.

    Mane this was a great video, it’s hard to find videos on repairs on the STS and this right here may help me. As I’m definitely having this exact issue with mines as of today. Recently changed my oil and filter, 3 days later I heard a slight knock and a little bit of white smoke out my exhaust …fast forward, it breaks down after 10m of driving and I seen oil actually coming from my intake manifold/Throttle body and my seals once all removed! Never seen before but overall PCV Was my first thought but not 100% because I never had to deal with one lol I’ll see you tomorrow PCV …oh yea metal shavings somewhat only coming from driver side intake location) I should be scared 😱 thanks mane great detail on this

    Thanks ! Our 2012 Equinox with 3.0L V6 has been leaking oil somewhere at the front of the engine. Checked the PCV and found it almost plugged shut. And the PCV holes where still small like you showed on the 3.6L. Drilled and cleaned out like you showed. We'll see if this helps. Sure makes sense to me. Fact there was a TSB is reassuring.

    • @bigfella6629
      @bigfella6629 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hey mate, I had a 07 RA Rodeo with same 3.6L engine and had same problem with the oil sludge, you need to use a full synthetic oil and change it every 7500ks or earlier, not what the book says. I used Nulon 5w30 full synthetic. If you let the oil sludge up it leads to all sorts of problems with the oil pressure and in turn the fine oil passages throughout the engine block up and then it goodbye engine because various parts are not getting enough lubrication.

    Great video I got a 2011 cts I notices there was big blob of slimy oil in the air intake hose when I was changing my air filter, the oil built up in the hose directly below the pcv vacuum line connected to the top of hose just before it clamps to the intake manifold which also had this grime which was getting sucked into the intake. That pcv line was connected to that same connector on the passenger side. I was glad I caught this when the car had about 60,000miles(about 95,000km). I found the same information you layout and bought a new valve piece and drilled it out and also added a catch can. i got one that has a brass filter and is easy to drain but it came with cheap tubing lines which couldnt handle high temps and ended up kinking and blocking airflow which almost caused the the engine to stall when i was out on a drive. I went to a local hose and tubing supplier and really didnt know what class or grade I needed that could handle the pressure and temperature. The owner came out and asked me to show him and I showed him my kinking lines and explained that I needed something to handle the temps and pressure. Now this was a place that sold and supplied all kinds of hoses and tubes by the spool but the owner just pulled off one of the lines that was kinked and checked the size of the hose, then said ok how long of piece do you need. I said 10ft just so I had some extra just incase. 5 mins later he came out with a nice thick hose and hands it to me, I ask him what the cost is and he said 10 bucks which was perfect cause I only has $10 bill in my wallet. I dont know what the hose I got was made of but it hasnt kinked in years and I still have about 4 feet of it in my tool box. But ya I would say get a catch can if you do this mod. Mine gets about half full of oil every oil change and thats all oil which would be getting in your air intake

    My 18 yo son bought an 06 CTS 2.8 with 80k miles a month ago--grandpa car--figured it was well cared for. Started hearing a rattle noise from the front of the engine when going up our steep driveway. Checked oil and it was not even on the stick--so that was the timing chain being starved when at an angle. I immediately changed the oil and put in 6 qts of AMSOIL. Researched these CTS's and heard about oil consumption issues. One week later (about 300 miles) and we're a quart low already. Plan to inspect the pcv (and probably valve cover design next). Hoping this will fix it.

    I'd argue that all of the hfv6 line should have catch cans. The lf4 should have a dry sump much like they've done with the c8 vetts

    Oil in intake tube ended after doing this to it, but still uses some oil still. Throttle plate stays clean as a whistle too. Hope this reduces intake valve deposits also from less oil in intake tube. 👍✌️

    So I rebuilt the top half of my 3.6. And installed new valve cover gaskets and noticed on the right bank valve cover gasket it’s sealed off with 3 little holes so that it protects oil from splashing up onto the pcv valve, my question is could this be even more of a problem? Right now I’m burning a quart every 150 miles which is crazy and it’s definitely going out the exhaust, do you have any ideas for this? I appreciate any info I can get

  • @davek6630

    GM has a revised valve cover gasket, with a built in oil baffle for the PCV passageway. I would still drill out the pcv valve like you did.

    I drilled my pcv out, cleaned carbon out of intake, throttle body, tube from valve cover to intake...I reset my mileage trip odometer and I went from 21.5 mpg to 24.7mpg. This was just the first 25 miles, so will have a better idea in 1000 miles. Engine is definitely running smoother. Thanks for the info. I was consuming 1 quart every 500-750 miles. Hopefully this eleviates this issue, 221,000 miles 2007 Cadillac CTS 3.6L

      My 07 is still using/ leaking oil. It stopped leaking oil at the breather tube on driverside valve cover that goes to the intake though... So I think I am going to just keep adding oil every week like I have been. I don't feel like installing a catch can. My mileage went down a little by the way, now getting around 23.0 mpg. But I think I have a coil misfiring intermittently. So I am sure that is killing the mpg a little. Good luck Josh.

    What is the tube coming from left aft side of the engine and connects to the intake tube near MAF sensor? I have cold air intake and oil near MAF sensor

    • @ProudDad1976
      @ProudDad1976 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unless I am not understanding your question that line is a recycle tube and it is normal to have oil in a factory air box or in yours right next to the MAF sensor. Now I say normal but if you are getting a lot of oil then no and you should check your PCV valve to see if you need to replace it. I have a 2011 CTS4 3.6l and I will be drilling the holes in the PCV valve tomorrow

    you should post a video on how to install a catch can on this particular engine. Because of the multiple lines going into the intake manifold, it seems harder to me than most engines are.

    I have a 2006 Cadillac SRX with the 3.6. Been having to add oil every week and a half or two weeks now for a long time! Couldn’t find a leak anywhere, so this is definitely something to check out and see if it fixes my problem. Great video and thanks for the content. If you can help me figure out why I’m having problems with it cranking, (battery is good, alternator is good and the starter also) I would love the feedback. Thanks again!

      It's actually called a ccv(crankcase ventilation valve) on these engines, as it is not a pcv in the traditional sense since there is no ball valve inside of them...that being said; it's all about finding the happy medium w/ these ccv systems...GM found out that the older gasket designs were allowing TOO much oil to be sucked up into the valve at high engine vacuum and because the holes were too small it would cause them to get clogged up which in turn created too much pressure in the crankcase & then it's only a matter of time until it starts developing all of the associated symptoms w/ that...the new gasket design prevents too much oil from the crankcase from being sucked into the ccv system. Add drilling the holes out larger on the ccv on top of that & it will never get clogged, it won't suck in too much oil & you will have a pretty darn reliable hfv6 that should give you many more trouble-free miles! If u have a gdi version, though, I would still recommend running a spray intake cleaner w/ PEA through it every 25,000 miles to clean up the carbon build-up off of the intake valves & pistons that accumulates on those...

    Dude...I've been looking for 2 weeks trying to find a video that showed how to do this from pulling it out of the engine to putting it back in. THANK YOU! Do you also have a video showing how to install the PCV Vent Hoses for the same Car/Engine? These are the hoses that connect to the pcv valvee and up to the sides of the intake manifold ( AC Delco PN 12616910 ) and a separate hose that runs somewhere from the back of the engine to the front of the engine. ( AC Delco PN 12603990 ) I don't see a line that looks like it on my car so I don't know where it exactly.
