What's next for Nintendo Switch Online? (GameCube, DS, Pokémon Games, & MORE!)

  • In the more recent Nintendo Direct, Nintendo expanded the Nintendo Switch Online service with Gameboy & Gameboy Advance games! We can now all play Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga on our switches. NSO has changed so much since its original introduction back in 2018. From only starting with NES games. We now have NES, SNES, N64, Gameboy and even Mega Drive games!
    So what is next for Nintendo Switch Online? There is still a lot of games and console gaps for Nintendo's history such as Gamecube and the DS. Where are the Pokémon games?

    DS games on Wii U worked because the console had two screens and you where forced to always use the game pad, so you always had a touch screen, something you don't have while playing docked on switch. It isn't something impossible to get around. Using the right stick like a stylus and holding zl to click could work but it won't be as good as it was on Wii U

    • @jasonmartinez5116
      @jasonmartinez5116 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection took that same exact approach where it used the right analog stick to control the touch screen side, with the right trigger or the right thumb stick click for the touch screen press

    Links awakening is the other game available on NSO and also had its own remake, and it wasn't a simple update like Mario 64 just upscaled textures it was a full ground up remake and sold for 60$ so a remake/remaster clearly isn't a rule to exclude something right away.

  • @mattbelcher7135
    @mattbelcher7135 ปีที่แล้ว +79

    DS games would be very tricky to port on the switch. With the Wii U it worked because you can have 2 screens being the TV and the game pad and the game pad was a touch screen. On switch you take to dock out and it’s no longer on the tv. You would be limited and for a lot of the games you wouldn’t be able to just play on the TV. I can’t really see a way that they can make that work and not make it seem awkward.

      If Gameboy (and gba) ever gets Nso controllers like nes, snes, n64, and genesis did with working screens, then I would imagine a DS controller being an easy sell for a more accurate experience. If not, maybe some sort of strange download play stuff could be done with 3DS systems without using the eshop. Or maybe nothing at all will end up happening.

    • @diego_brando_4352
      @diego_brando_4352 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@Gold_Yoshi I doubt GB(a) would ever get their own controllers since they're handhelds with a screen built alongside the controls. There's no way Nintendo would make controllers for consoles with a screen on them, especially for DS since it would be difficult to get a peripheral with a screen to work with the switch plus it'd be too expensive just to play Ds games on the switch. I still think that Gamecube games and Wii games should be added to NSO, because 3D-Allstars can't be bought anymore. Sure it might be a huge middle finger to people who actually bought the collection to add the games to the online service, but people who couldn't buy the collection could still have the chance to play those games without committing piracy or having to spend more than they should on consoles that aren't being made anymore. Nintendo could also just not include the games that got remasters in the online service

    • @markharbath31X9

      Yeah and not only that they have a higher chance to get ported than the 3ds

    • @Adrienmon
      @Adrienmon ปีที่แล้ว

      Unless Nintendo stops caring about the right-out-of-the box accessibility, there will never ever be any GameCube NSO because of one issue :
      GC games are designed around its controller. But the GC controller have features that can't be reproduced by any Switch controller, mainly the analog triggers, and would force customers to pay for extra accessories in order play these games properly. And I don't think Nintendo wants that, on the top of the an already expensive NSO+Expension Pack

    • @markharbath31X9
      @markharbath31X9 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Adrienmon then just create a new playstyle like they did with sunshine, also this is Nintendo, they would have literally anything that could work for this

    • @Adrienmon
      @Adrienmon ปีที่แล้ว

      @@markharbath31X9 This creation of new playstyle is possible, but going over evey and each game to evaluate how to do it is a heavy task, that won't be solved on most of the games. It was possible to make a room for adaptation on Sunshine for 3D All Stars for both states of the R triggers, but not so many games could be that luky.
      Let's take another example, like F-Zero GX. It uses the triggers at their full capacity with real progression for drifting. It would be a nightmare if it's just dispatched on 2 buttons per trigger, like FLUDD is in Sunshine.
      But if you do, it also means that you'll have to put the attack initialy on the Z botton somewhere else. L-stick button is available, but would be a nightmare to use because you'll have to turn it while pressing it. R-stick clic is also available, but is even worse because accessible only if you move your right thumb from ABXY buttons, so it's impossible considering you have to constanly have your thumb pressing A.
      But even if also you somehow manage to do it, you'll still have to find a new room to make for the boost on the Y button. Because on GC, Y button is right on the top the A button. On a Switch controller, Y is on the opposite left of the A button.
      And in the end, if you managed to do something that surprisingly works, first I would owe you an apology, but now many things would not match on what's written on the screen due to all for these button modifications. They took this time for Sunshine, but I doubt they would take that time for NSO releases, and correcting every and each language textbox to edit the buttons displayed on screen.
      Now I let you imagine the nightmare it would be if they had to try to think about it for every and each game they want to be on the NSO. So if someday there is a GC NSO, it will maybe be on a future system, but definitly not on this current system with this kind of default controllers.

      Rather than a second screen, you could have it be more of a WiiU kind of deal. Keep the tablet form factor and have the dock act as a link to cast the second screen to the tv. Though I don't see a DS/3DS emulator being enough of a killer app to carry a whole console feature by itself.

    If anything M64 being on it and 3D all stars being a "limited" release would make sense since according to Nintendo they're not available anymore. I could see Sunshine either sold on its own or in a new emulator. Could possible be for the next Nintendo console though.

    I think the next viable option is Turbo, the Wii and Wii U both had Turbo VC so we know there is a standing relationship with Konami. Nintendo knows they can polish up Wii and GameCube games and sell them for near full retail, so I don't think they will be giving that to us on the service.

  • @LS-td4yf
    @LS-td4yf ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Also another reason why gamecube wouldn't work is because 1: each game is around 1 gb so the file size for it would be huge and 2: it would take a lot more work for gamecube games cause they would have to optimize the emulator for every game instead of just dragging and dropping a rom and calling it a day. If you look at gamecube emulation on a modded switch, the most fps you can get is like 25 and that's overclocked, if the cpu is stock it's only like 10 fps

    • @whyrwehere
      @whyrwehere ปีที่แล้ว

      Exactly. If they wanna add GameCube they would have to limit it to people with sd cards, and they'd probably also put it in an extra expansion pack.

    • @Adrienmon
      @Adrienmon ปีที่แล้ว +1

      And also controller problems. Like the ABXY button pattern is diffrent and allow diffrent combos on a GC controller (A+Y) that can't be reproduced without a cranky remapping. But the biggest issue would be L and R analog triggers on the GC, that have no equivalent that could be emulated on Switch controllers. Sometimes some tweaks thru remapping can be done, but it's very far to be that easy for every and each game.
      Even if it could technically be solved by saling NSO exclusive GC controller or producing once again GC controller adapters, we have to remind that the purpose of NSO is to be playable by any Switch right out of the box without any extra accessory. And having to pay extra bucks to properly play these games if you don't already have GC controller + an adapter on the top of the already exepensive NSO+Expension Pack, it would be a real pain in the ass.

      Technically we do have Mario Sunshine and Mario Galaxy on the Switch but that was part of Super Mario 3D All Stars and that game is no longer obtainable unless you already got the game before it got removed. Plus, those don't have save states or rewind features like the NES, SNES, N64, GB, GBC, GBA and the Sega Genesis games do so the Wii and GameCube getting added to NSO would be nice. I do wish that they would make a peripheral that makes all previous games from previous systems playable but I do understand why they isn't and won't be that coming anytime soon since NSO basically already does that. Plus, it might be USB which is going to be fine for some Switch consoles but not for others *cough cough* Switch Lite *cough cough*

    I don't think they'll do it though. Pokemon is a money printer for Nintendo. They ain't giving us that for $20 a year when in their eyes the online service is already a good value with its current library. They'd make a killing from a standalone Pokemon Classics Collection for $60 that includes Red/Blue/Yellow, Gold/Silver and Ruby/Sapphire. That's my prediction.

  • @RandomizationShow

    Neither of these are happening till next gen. DS emulates fine on switch, but emulating DS has always been bad on any device due to the consoles touch screen and form factor. In order for DS emulation to be worth it or even remotely functional, they would have to release some kind of peripheral or special controller, perhaps even one with a touch screen and pen. Nintendo simply won't do it unless it can have a polished form factor. As for GameCube, the switch emulates it pitifully, but if the "switch pro" is even half as powerful as the steam deck, gamecube emulation will be possible.

    • @RandomizationShow
      @RandomizationShow ปีที่แล้ว

      Also, for maybe $60 or $70, you can get a ds lite and a flashcard and instantly have more games than Nintendo would ever offer thru NSO. As for wii, get one with a busted disc drive for $20-$40 and hack it, it will function perfectly, and games can be stored on a USB drive. With both of those, you'll literally have thousands of games that will keep you occupied from now till retirement.

    My take on this...
    The BIG reason why we will not see GC games on NSO is this simple reason:
    1) The GC games are ~1GB each.
    2) Switch got only 32 GB eMMC storage (OLED got 64 GB).
    3) Not all Switch gamers got "that fast/good internet connection".
    4) customers should not need to buy a SD card to download games from NSO, period.
    The DS games are more comparable with the heavier N64 games when you look at the ROM sizes.
    The reason why it works with NES, SNES, N64, Genesis, GB and GBA is that the ROM sizes are not "that big".
    GameCube is out of the question. DS is much more likely.
    And the second reason is "your reason": it's much much better for Nintendo to release remasters for Switch. We've already seen at least Super Mario Sunshine and Metroid Prime 1.
    Metroid Prime 1 has sold already at least 1,09 million copies, a mix of physical and digital. That's 43,6 million dollar, if the physical copies also counts as 40 dollar each. That's pretty good money for almost 2 months. Maybe the physical copy is cheaper from Nintendo so the stores can make a profit as well. Let's say 30-40 million dollar. That's the revenue, not profit. But these copies makes probably some gamers buy a Switch console, which is a big win!
    The user experience will also be much better with a remaster (HD/900p/1080p) than an emulated low res version. For GameCube these "low res games" are actually good enough for many gamers, so it's not a good thing to offer these old verisons "almost for free" on NSO. It's a completely different thing for Link's Awakening 1993/98 (GB/GBC) compared to the remake/port for Switch.
    There is one problem with DS. There's too few really good games. There's some "okay" games. New Super Mario Bros DS is a great game. It might be interesting enough for Switch users to play DS games but since GB/GBA is so new to NSO, I don't expect DS anytime soon.
    DS on NSO - maybe fall 2024.
    GC on NSO - never or at least a couple of years in the future.
    Wii on NSO? The problem is growing! The games are ~4GB each so 4x as much as GC games. Plus that the Wii games are often using motion controls: Wii Remote PLUS that add-on "nunchuck".
    So before DS on NSO, there's 1-2 years when GB/GBA should be in the spotlight as the newest addition and that they will add more games.
    Other possible consoles on NSO in the future:
    Sega Master System (8 bit)
    TurboGraphx15
    Sega Game Gear
    Atari Lynx
    I'm more interested in Master System and TG16 than DS.
    With all these possibilities for consoles to get added on NSO at least 1-2 more consoles should pop up on NSO in the coming years, starting at 2024 (?).

I do think TurboGrafx-16 might appear on regular Nintendo Switch Online while Nintendo DS might appear on the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pass since GBA is on NSO + EP. I do think GameCube for Nintendo Switch Online might going to hold too much data storage since some GameCube games are about around 1 GB or above.

    To everyone who thinks gamecube/wii will happen; it won't. At least not in this format. With the NSO consoles ALL of the available roms are stored on your system/SD storage at once. It works with these 5 because the file sizes are all small enough. The jump to gamecube/wii made roms approx. 1 GB per game, so storage would run out fast within the first few games added. DS roms ARE small enough, but the switch does not have dual screen capability. If the successor gets that, then yeah DS games will come to that. For gamecube/wii we're looking at remasters for the foreseeable future.

    I don't think the Switch would have any issues running DS games, but the thing that makes me think it won't happen is the fact the Switch uses a totally different type of touch screen. You could use your finger or a compatible stylus if you wanted to on the Switch, but I'd argue it'd still be more awkward than playing like it was intended. Most games designed around the touch screen required precision (I know the Zelda games sure did). And, in my opinion, I think it would be a mess to control games on the Switch's touch screen. It worked well on the Wii U because both it and the DS used a similar type touch screens.
    Then there's the problem with it being in docked mode.
    Not to say Nintendo won't do it at all. They could maybe come up with something to make what I suggested a non-issue and still announce it, but as it stands I have doubts it would be ideal (at least for games designed around touch controls). 🤷

    When the wii released, the N64 was 10 years old, and being included on the wii shop channel. We're now in a landscape where the Gamecube was released 21 years ago and still has not had it's library available online for purchase/streaming. Nintendo's refusal to port anything but their oldest systems is starting to catch up to them in a detrimental way
