    Pretty cool development to see, I like the simplicity of the QSB, made be ask "That's it?" when I saw it installed in. Although indeed it would probably be nice if it was a bit thinner for ease of install, like you touched up on.

    • @mancloud19
      @mancloud19 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      I considered making it thinner but then the KunaiGC itself interferes with the pins of the SP1, as you loose height in your overall setup. That's why I decided (for now) to stick with this height. I tested 0.8mm board (actual is 1.2mm) and it resulted in the KunaiGC board being slightly angled and having contact to the underlying pins

      I think similarly because of the size of the ViperGC. This is a much more viable solution than the picoboot and other IPL solutions. Love it.

      It looks like the QSB replaces, what, 6 solder points, with no other electronics on board? Wouldn't it be just as easy to solder 6 wires from the Game Cube motherboard to the mod chip? Is the QSB even needed?

  • @bnr32jason
    @bnr32jason ปีที่แล้ว +242

    I'm curious about the price, but I'm just not seeing the reason why this would be better than a $4 PicoBoot setup. Yeah it's got Swiss onboard, but we're going to be using an SD card anyway that can have Swiss on it. I like that there's no wires, but with the more difficult soldering that seems to be a wash. Is there some kind of functionality that the KunaiGC can offer that the PicoBoot cannot?

    • @ArcanineluvsU
      @ArcanineluvsU ปีที่แล้ว +46

      My first thought…
      It already doesn’t offer much that Picoboot can’t do, so the price really has to be competitive. The lack of wires is great, as that seems to be the main struggle for a lot of picoboot installs. However, the board is thick and I feel like more people may struggle with bridging the pins accidentally. Just my thought though.
      It’s great that we are getting more options. I just hope this is competitively priced.

    • @donoteatmikezila
      @donoteatmikezila ปีที่แล้ว +26

      Same. I don't really see the big deal about having onboard memory. It doesn't make it look any cleaner because the SD adapter is already hidden in the bottom expansion port. The end result is the same. Push power button, end up on at Swiss. The trick of changing the boot-up logo is neat, but I mean you won't even see that if you're holding start to end up at Swiss. So what's the point?

    • @Keillan5480
      @Keillan5480 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Removing that QSB for repairs or reversing the mod also looks like a pain compared to a flex ribbon or plain wires. I feel like you’d need to use a hot air station to get it off, which most people don’t have and even less people have experience with. Picoboot seems much easier in that aspect

    • @mohawkmikeandfriends2257
      @mohawkmikeandfriends2257 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agreed! There's no way it will be cheaper than a pi pico and at least as of right now it doesn't have any advantage over picoboot as far as features. If saves can be stored to it in the future that would be cool but then again i wont be able to use my saves elsewhere if i use a different console at someone else's house for example. Memory cards are not that hard to find and the quality of 3rd party ones has come up a lot. If this would have come out before picoboot it would have been a hit but picoboot is just too strong at the moment and readily available now. If maybe pico's stock starts to dwindle and they get harder or hyper-inflated by scalpers... ok this would be the easy choice but just because something COULD happen, doesn't really justify it being usefull right now.
      The other thing that bothers me is availability for the kunaiGC. Sounds like it's exclusively being sold on consoles4you at least at launch (whenever that'll be). They are based out of Switzerland so for us on this side of the ocean in North America, that's going to mean longer delivery times, customs fees, brokerage fees... again, not ideal. It's great to see another player in the mod chip game for our beloved GC's but I'm like most of the comments on here where I'll be passing unless there's some game-changer feature or killer app that is only available on the kunaiGC. Props to @ManCloud for an alternative. I'm sure europeans will snap them up once released but until you at the very least get a NA distributor, stock levels that don't require a waiting list and a features list that are compelling enough I'm sorry to say me and many many other GC modders will be sticking with our picoboots. Looking forward to be proved wrong in the future however.

    I love being early to these videos.
    I might be missing something here, but I don't see the benefit of this chip over Pico Boot . As of now Pico is cost efficient, easy to instal with just 5 wires and super customizable. This feels like the same but tackier and with a few extra bells and whistles that ultimately won't ever be used more than once or twice (and we don't even know the final price yet) and the internal memory card is already a thing with the latest versions of Swiss with "Memory Card Emulation".
    Pretty neat, but unnecesary imo. They came to the game a little too late with the PicoBoot being an option now.

    It seems to be a neat simple-to-install modchip. Nice to have options!

    • @davidcameron648
      @davidcameron648 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Not redundant at all. Swiss' memory card emulation cannot use a storage device that's being used to load games (and the last time I checked, there couldn't even be any game ISOs stored on it). So, to use Swiss to load games from an SD card adapter and utilize the memory card emulation, you would need two SD cards and the adapters to use them. Not terrible, or even all that expensive, but having a device with basically a built in memory card is great.

    having swiss directly on it is a nice idea but could present a problem when it comes to updating swiss until an option is added for that, using something like iplboot where it runs swiss from micro sd makes it so much easier to update swiss given how often it's updated.
    i would also love to see an option where you can set the startup so it's the opposite, as in you hold start to get to the gamecube bios and if you don't hold start it boots to swiss because 99% of the time i would want the console to boot into swiss and i would very rarely want to get to the gamecube bios and wouldn't want to have to hold start each time.

I want to see what this chip allows in the future, before I would consider installing it, especially sense I already have a nice set up for one of mine at the moment. I don't personally think the thickness of the QSB is an issue. It leaves some room for error. Flex cables would be far less forgiving and are easier to damage with the soldering iron during installation. My negative is that this doesn't have to be two separate boards. It can be done with just one eliminating the need for two separate parts.
    All that being said, this easily one of the simplest mods I've observed. It can be accomplished with amateur-level soldering skill -- mainly because of the QSB's thickness.
    Only thing left is price. If it comes in under $100USD, this will be a nearly perfect mod.
    Great vid with pros/cons review.

    There's nothing that convinces me this is better or even as good as picoboot. I'm going to have an SD card installed anyway because my games have to live somewhere, so it really doesn't matter that this has onboard memory. Picoboot is cheap and easy and the end result is still that you turn on the gamecube and end up in Swiss.

    The "built-in Swiss" feature is actually not that great of a "pro" for the modchip. In fact, Swiss gets updated regularly enough that you would want a new version on your SD card, which you have to set up anyway since the on-board memory is obviously not anywhere large enough to hold even a single game. It's literally saving us from a drag-and-drop action from the Swiss release zip file onto the SD card, (possibly) followed by renaming it. Picoboot (PB) does all that KunaiGC (KGC) does already. If one uses PB and does not want Swiss to auto-load like KGC, just assign it to a button. PB also supports custom boot logos via flippyboot (basically chainloading bootloaders). Does KGC require Swiss to be installed onto the onboard memory (huge "con" if so)? Or will KGC auto-load newer versions of Swiss on the SD card? (PB just requires Swiss to be named IPL.DOL or some other relevant "button-name" DOL file). The only "pro" I see for now is that the QSB is nicely made (but I do worry about bridging neighboring connections due to the copper edges that you pointed out). Hopefully the onboard memory capabilities will be a big surprise with future updates.

    I literally just put two picoboots in my basket from Aliexpress when I tabbed out to youtube and saw this! It seems great, but I cant really imagine that its going to cost anything near the picoboot which makes it a hard sale. I have two picoboots in my basket totalling only £8. It is perhaps good for those who really want to keep the intro, but I could really see that being something solvable in the future on the picoboot. I don't see the 16mb of non removable storage being that beneficial for that many people, especially when we have sd2sp2 to free up both slots, as well as SD Gecko allowing for ridiculous capacitiies.
    Im excited to see what the future will bring for the Gamecube!

    The picoboot is a tricky install. This is a better solution if priced ~$20. I had to buy $15 26 AWG which you don't need for this install. Picoboot took me 2 attempts to get right. It may have worked on my 1st attempt using single core 22awg but my sd2sp2 was likely the issue and 22 gauge wire is way too thick. I had to add some solder to my sd2sp2 contacts to get my GC to recognize it in swiss and it's a nice n snug fit
