It's a shame that there aren't many stories about Thor and Sif's daughter, Thrud. The only one I know of is the one where a dwarf (?) wanted to marry her, but Thor made him wait outside until dawn where the sunlight turned him to stone
Haven't heard that story, but it might have been a troll and not a dwarf, since trolls are typically the ones that turn to stone in the sun. I've never heard of that being a thing for dwarfs. But pretty much every weirdly shaped mountain in Norway has some myth behind it where some troll got stuck out in the sun and froze that way or something.

@@franklinbonnefoy2295 it’s okay another part of that is because some people don’t realize that they’ve had past lives related to information like this which they become passionate about it & don’t realize they are or why. Greetings from Denmark, part of the origin of the lore. :) 11:40 These 3 contests actually had the bystanders pretty nervous during all 3 of them. JON! There’s a series on Netflix called ragnarok! I think it’s pretty cool and you should watch it , it really give a different view on the Norse mythology toooo!
Fun fact: In Iceland, Norse mythology is taught in schools, especially from the book "Snorra Edda". (I know this from personal experience). We are also taught to read and write in old Norse runes called FUÞARK.
I think that Thor was just having too much fun with the insults to care. He also probably went through Odin’s antics on a daily basis and decided to humor him. A sweet father-son dynamic.
I always loved Thor's appearance in Ragnarok (which was filmed in Norway). There are 2 seasons on Netflix, which I highly recommend. Odin is also against type when we first meet him, as is Freya. I am praying that there is a 3rd season because Season 2 left us with Loki's serpent and we're just waiting for Ragnarok to happen ! Also, seeing Norse festivity dress is a treat in and of itself. I'd like to see your take on Chaucer or The Green Knight. Maybe you could go into more myths of the States, like the Apallacians. I know there are other YT channels that have done this, but your interpretation would be just as fascinating.
Awesome video, you did it a good justice. I love the part where Oden basically tells thor ( 20:13 ) "If you go home now you might meet your wifes lover"... if you think about it if thor did... if thor went home, where would he be and who would he be with (his wife)... Thor is his wifes lover.

@@StarSeedAcademy8 I know. I have a hard time remembering that. I tend to overanalyze things and get caught up like I have now.
@@franklinbonnefoy2295 it’s okay another part of that is because some people don’t realize that they’ve had past lives related to information like this which they become passionate about it & don’t realize they are or why.
A lot of the “mythology” is not myth but real things either exaggerated or cartoonified so to speak so that the stories can be properly passed down in full & then those who know how to decipher can then do that part compared to trusting a bunch of cultures to remember detailed in-depth information, events or etc.
Love this channel, really good info, but also love the delivery and humor!
hey thanks for saying so! :)
I'm only commenting for the algorithm because Jon's videos are great and more people should watch them.
17:58 this story has a lot of plotholes when you realise Thor can just fly across the river with his hammer 🤦♂
lol or even just throw it at Graybeard!
Doesn't Thor need his chariot to fly? From my understanding, his hammer does not give him the ability to fly in the original myths.
Thor is half giant.
You forgot about two of Thor and Sif's other children!
Uller the archer, and their daughter Thrud, whose name implies "strength" or "might" . . . .
I am just going to preemptively hit that like button!!! This is a long awaited episode
Greetings from Denmark, part of the origin of the lore. :)
11:40 These 3 contests actually had the bystanders pretty nervous during all 3 of them. At the drinking contest, even though Thor didn't seem to make any progress on the drinking horn, the bystanders started to notice the water level drop in the ocean. The old woman (Ælde / Age) was down on one knee, and the cat (Midgårdsormen / Midgardsworm) actually lifted one paw from the ground. This tale is also part of the danish cartoon movie "Valhalla" from 1986, which actually has Tjalfe and Røskva as lead characters.
...
Odin trolling his son is the best thing I've learned in a long time
Always thorough and informative. Very interesting. Thanks
I could've sworn they had planned to have Thor fight Jormungandr in Infinity war and that's how Thor would've gotten Storm breaker.
Every time I watch your channel I do-do-do with the intro.
Now that you've finished the western horoscope you might enjoy a dive into the Chinese horoscope. It has two elements for each year, an animal(this year is the tiger) and and element. The elements can be wood, metal, earth, fire, and water.
There are also horoscopes of other people. But I'm not in very good shape for recalling them right now.
I can't wait to face Thor in the next GoW game. I hope we get his hammer because that would be great
I was thinking the same thing! Considering that Keaton can wield the axe despite it being made for his wife it seems like a real possibility.
@@JonSolo keaton
@@LarsTonguesInAspix don't be that guy
@@donkeysauce1507 i'm already that guy, now what?
Since Kratos already has the blades and the axe, I hope Atreus gets the hammer. It would also just be funnier if Loki was the new owner of Thor's hammer
I think the movie immortal has captured Thor in the best way of film adaptation to date.
I love how Gunther's eyes widened when you said "eat"
Excellent work and highly entertaining. I want to try translating Mjölnir but it's a bit hard but here is my best shot, "The grind down-er" presumably because it grinds down anything it hits 🤔, it probably has more meanings but this is what it sounds/feels/looks like in modern Icelandic😅
I think that some versions even translate to “lightning” or “mountain”, but I am not certain.
@@generaljesus9825 hmm, weird, Mjölnir is already pretty descriptive in Icelandic (old norse) and I can't see any connection with lightning or mountain so I don't know why someone would translate it that way.
@@tobbi11 First, Icelandic is NOT Old Norse. It is, however, the closest modern language to Old Norse. Second, you really cannot see a connection between the hammer and lightning? It creates lightning, and is as heavy as a mountain
@@generaljesus9825 I know it's not old Norse but I can read both because I am Icelandic, and translating the name has nothing to do with it's characteristics almost every name in Icelandic is already descriptive. It would be like me calling your cross a tree. "you cant see how a cross is a tree it is made of wood"
@@generaljesus9825 And I am not trying to translate it cause I don't know what it means, but that it's very hard to put into English, I already know what it means, and it isn't lightning or mountain.
The roast of Thor was just funny for no reason “Hey man come here so we can settle this.” “No your mom dead.” Where and why would even Odin say that
It's interesting that Gunther's name ends in -ther which is a lot like Thor proving that he was Thor's dog in a past life. 🤔
Thank you Jon! You never disappoint with your Videos!
Great video Jon, keep it up!
Born and raised in Sweden and I remember in 4th grade when we did a play of the story about Thor’s hammer being stolen, good times
😂👏🏾👏🏾 I love your reference to the destruction of Alderaan in Star Wars by quoting Obi Wan. God of War and Star Wars in one place, who would've thought? Nice touch sir.
Finally, been waiting on this one 😎
I didn't know the story of thor's first duel. Thank you!!! I haven't heard a new norse story in ages!!!! I was beginning to think I knew them all. :) Love your videos, btw.
Thank you for this!!! The video was absolutely amazing! 🍻
Goddamn I can’t believe I’ve almost been watching you for 2 years I haven’t watched in a little while but now you’re at a million subs! That’s crazy
Finally I've been waiting for this!
I'm glad you covered my favorite norse story which is bridezilla Thor 😂
Hey I know your views are less than before but keep pushing your content always lift my spirit
Lift’s
In the comics Thor's mother is Gaia, the earth goddess.
Kinda weird how they combine Norse and Greek mythology, but alas, it is the comics after all.
@@ilikeswords5877 Gaia is a elder god in marvel she used different identity( jord Thors mom for example) to give birth and or creat new gods in marvel comics elder gods have no variants in the multiverse so she gave birth to all the thors in the multiverse.
Ohhhh I’ve been waiting for you to cover Thor!!!!
Love these. Thank you as always for this
Have you ever thought of doing a comparison series? A lot of these Gods also have similar & almost the same stories as other Gods who have same attributes.
It stops sounding so mythical when you see different cultures from completely different time periods & locations all telling the same tales.
This even plays into biblical stories going back to Egyptian & Sumerian one’s or Greek gods to Hindu ancient texts.
Thats cause they were all made around similar time periods and with so much traveling from the Vikings amd colonization and cultures learning from each other thats the results
@@James-ov5kg no that is not true, cuneiform for example predates Christianity by Hundreds if not thousands of years, which already tells a flood story down to releasing a bird after the flood and sacrificing to God(s).
my guess for the similarity would be that those stories are less recounting of past events and more educational stories, and people back then had similar values. i could be wrong of course but at least for the european panheons and myths it is plausible
You are so amazing and you do such great research! It's very impressive tbh...
In German Thursday is called Donnerstag which translates to Thunders Day and also relates to Thor.
Keep it up I love these videos
Would love to hear you cover on origins of Yokai, and their stories, and of course, more Fae stories please.
Odin and Loki have so much in common I swear 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I like the GOW rendition. I work at a railroad, and a lot of the tough, strong dudes look like just like that. Don’t diss the gut, just a product of beer. I think it was probably the most accurate.
My husband's father follows the old Norse religion. So he grew up hearing about these stories and more. My husband does not practice it, though. He's Agnostic. He loved listening to this while I watching it.
5:34 all i can think of when you were talking about the belt is that small scene from Spiderman Homecoming where Happy is loading up the plane going off a list, while having trouble saying the belts name
Thank you for confirming what a Google search didn't: Thors mythical appearance! I was right about his red beard, his iron gloves; and the chariot pulled by goats! No matter how carefully I worded my inquiry, Google told me about the Thor from the MCU.😒
Ouch! What a snub to the original mythology
I can't wait to see him and Kratos knocking chunks out of each other in Ragnorock.
the thors wedding segment reminded me of how SAO used it i hadnt heard the story before but its good
he is just mentioned in the movie where he talks about how loki transformed into a tiny snake and nearly squishes him to death.
Great video, my husband enjoyed it very much. He's listened to a podcast that butchered some of the lore. He's big on Norse Mythology like I am on Greek and Egyptian.
We all read Rick Riordan, don’t we?
The roast of Thor reminds me of that one video. The one where they're yelling at each other from across the water just insulting each other lol.
i imagine Thor is the himbo of the Norse pantheon
Yay!!!! Back to Norse Mythology.
Hey!!! I really really enjoy your videos! Greetings from México
I really enjoy your videos thank for the hard work that you put into them you are much appreciated
Kratos is going to have a hell of a fight against Thor. I hope they have a fight to see who is physically stronger.
Wow amazing I can't believe I'm this soon to get the notification!! I know this is going to be a great video.
Jon, you should dissect the origins of Chinese Dragons and the origins of Canada’s Wendingo
That is the coolest fucking thing I have ever heard. Wish I went to school in Iceland, damn.
For the fact you brought real gospel vs marvel I’m impressed ty
I think that Thor was just having too much fun with the insults to care. He also probably went through Odin’s antics on a daily basis and decided to humor him. A sweet father-son dynamic.
The Messed Up Origins ™️ of Jon Solo’s Goatee is the next video we need.
Absolutely loving the scruffy look ! Appreciate the video💪🥳
Awesome video, you did it a good justice. I love the part where Oden basically tells thor ( 20:13 ) "If you go home now you might meet your wifes lover"... if you think about it if thor did... if thor went home, where would he be and who would he be with (his wife)... Thor is his wifes lover.
We appreciate everything you do 🙏
Thank You for the content. Now I Know the Magnus Chase books are more accurate than the MCU. 😊
If you haven't already, you should consider contacting the Welsh Viking for a collab. Would be a super interesting episode, I am certain.
Hi. I love your videos. And I was wondering if you could do please do videos of Native American mythology explained, I am half Native on my mom's side. It truly fascinating and interesting. Just like Scottish mythology or Irish. All of it is deeply fascinating.
Thank you for your videos. I love to learn, especially mythology, and I mean any kind of mythology I can get my hands on. Hehehe.
Anyway. Thank you for your videos.
