    Could "mothers" be figurative, and actually represent the nine realms?🤔 (nine mothers, who were also sisters)

    • @GrimmShadowsII
      @GrimmShadowsII 3 ปีที่แล้ว +155

      That's a good theory. Norse mythology is written as poems, and I believe are thought to have been sung, so it would be more poetic the way it's written rather then "seer of the 9 realms" or something like that. It isn't that uncommon even today to believe there's a connection between mother and child so that connection could be refering to his ability to see into all 9 realms.

    Can you imagine that when Heimdall gets introduced whenever he enters the Valhalla court and the dude who has to introduce him ends with "And Enemy of Loki!" And everyone just claps, b/c everyone hates Loki.

    • @mrmegalovania
      @mrmegalovania 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No one in myth "Hated" Loki just tolerated him or were somewhat close to him if you notice Thor in particular does go to Loki if he couldn't solve a problem by beating it with Mjölnir lol Heimdall maybe the only one that did not like Loki because of their feud however that came about but he too tolerated him for the most part due to Odin. But after Ragnarök is started sure they hated him then for obvious reasons of pointing out their flaws and well starting the literal end of all things is understandable. But of course I'm one for Loki he was necessary to push them or save the day then ultimately be their undoing.

    Man these videos just gives me all kind of nostalgia. In Denmark where I live Norse mythology is a pretty big thing, at least it was in my old school, so you get a lot of different stories from the mythology. In danish the word giant is translates to jætte and the word Jormungandr is usually translated to midgårdsormen and we usually call fenrir fenrisulven. I also remember going on a school trip to jelling-museet which is a museum in Jelling where the jelling stone is placed, which is a stone carved by Harald Blåtand (Bluetooth) and is also called Denmarks baptism certificate since Harald Blåtand is essentially the person that switched Denmark from believing in Norse mythology to believing in Christianity. I even remember a person coming over to our school and doing a PowerPoint presentation of the basics of Norse mythology and afterwards drawing a giant. Fantastic video and extra points for putting me back in like 2. or 3. grade😂

    The Rigsthula myth reminds me of the Grimms Fairytale called Eve’s Various Children. The story is more of an explanation on why rich people are pretty and poor people are ugly, and it replaces the random couples with Adam and Eve, but I bet it’s a variant of the same myth.

    This was excellent - one of your best.
    One thing that you might be interested in is the etymological origins of black and white in Nordic languages. You need a conceptual shift in the idea of colour, first, though. Black and white were perceived as the same philosophical concept - an absence of colour (the idea of black and bleach - the withdrawal of colour - are the exact same). What we regard as 'colours' were regarded as shades of 'grey' between an absence of colour. So the cinematic portrayal of Heimdall as a brown-eyed, brown-skinned man is exactly as accurate as a portrayal of him as a blue-eyed, pink-skinned man.
    Once you work from the basis that there was day and night and everything between was variations between absences in being able to see things with your eyes, that human evolutionary leap between experiencing things in nature that we call colour and being able to control the colour (through dying and painting and staining) of things we see becomes enormous.
    Oh well, just an idea.

    • @GrimmShadowsII
      @GrimmShadowsII 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Never heard the term 9 seas it's usually 7 but I guess the vikings could have had a different definition of seas. They probably only knew 2 of the oceans; the Atlantic and I think a wreck or 2 has been found in the Arctic ocean, unless I'm thinking of a movie or show, but I don't think they ever mad it to the Pacific and while they traveled alot it was mostly by boat so I don't think they found all the places we refer to as seas today.

    can't say I grew up reading the Pros Edda, but I do fondly remember a comic book series named Valhalla that did tell /make a small spin on each of these myths you told about the Norse gods.
    I remember one of these comic books about Heimdall, where he was getting together with Freyja and Loki came and screwed it up by stealing the necklace of love. Heimdall almost killed the poor bastard, as you can't hide from someone who can hear the grass grow and see the four corners of the world. but Loki got him to back off by telling the half-truth that he made a bet with Odin about stealing the necklace. it was a very interesting read, but I am unsure if those comic books ever got published outside my country.

    Something occurs to me: Could you go over the origins of "That's a 4-letter word"? Obviously, that's meant to signify a bad word like "f*ck", "sh*t", or even "damn", but it can also extend to certain economic terms, certain car brands, and other things depending on who you talk to.
    And there are so many other 4-letter words that aren't bad: like "like", "hike", "thin", "that", etc. Heck, "four", is a 4-letter word, and the only number the same amount of letters as its number.
    So, where did the expression come from?

    Hey Jon, being that Christians very often incorporated or adopted/reimagined many myths/legends of other cultures/religions into the Christian mythos, perhaps more of Heimdall's story can be found or, at least, speculated upon if researching through Christian mythos that is either known to have evolved from Norse mythology or has very similar/coincidental aspects. Just a thought. You're the research expert so I'll leave that for you to ponder.

    • @SesshouFan22

    • @SrZyrkon
      @SrZyrkon 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      You can see the effects of Christianity in what remains tho (cough cough Snori cough cough), but like you said yhe reverse is true too. Most major Christian holidays and practices were Pagan and were preserved by having a Christian coat of paint added. Folk stories and wives tales have carried a lot of the old practices and traditions forward too, although a lot of the original meanings are probably lost. Honestly tho, it would be an interesting endeavor to pour through the Christian mythos to see what clues and breadcrumbs are still there.

      Which is the problem with Norse Mythology as they rarely wrote about their religion, they only really got establish after the Christianzation of Scandinavia which is surprisingly less bloody than how Lithuania got Christianized. (in Short Northern Crusades happened mostly failed so Lithuanians had enough and basically converted to Christianity and then later created Poland-Lithuania and the Teutonic order still hated them and then later became Prussia.)

    My take on Heimdall being "white" ... it makes the most sense if he's something like a warrior who's survived to middle age, not quite as strong as in his youth, but more experienced and seasoned. So while Thor is well-suited to roaming around and getting peed on by giants, Heimdall's talents dispose him towards a role that's a little less active but also beyond the capabilities of a young warrior. His cunning - such as recommending that Thor disguise himself - would also be appropriate to an older warrior. His age would also make sense if he was around at the beginning of human society, cultivating the classes of mankind as well as the sickest burns.

    Another great video, though I thought I'd mention that although there are numerous theories regarding the identity of Heimdall's mothers, the fact of them being Jotunn is not something that is backed by evidence. The most concrete theory that I am familiar with, is that they are the daughters of the sea goddess Ran and the Jotunn Aegir, and were more or less the Norse version of sea nymphs. Although the names of these daughters are different than those attested for, for Heimdall's mothers, many scholars say this is the strongest theory.
