You seem to have a major misunderstanding of what is good and evil - his children were just his children, and not specifically “evil”. Same with Loke - he isn´t “evil” he just does what he does for the fun of it, since the other gods refer to him plenty of times for help.
This is great. I took multiple college level courses in mythology and hardly anything was mentioned of Baldur beyond “Ppl loved him and Loki got him killed.”
I love that you don't give your fans what they SAY they want, you give them what they ACTUALLY want. No one knows what they want until they have it! Great work my dude! :D
Not going to lie I only ever had a passing knowledge of him until playing God of War and then I started to look into him and he's pretty cool I love these Norse videos can't wait for the next one
His story is rarely told but his name is everywhere. There's a lot of characters in ancient war movies, but really featured as a warrior/leader of warriors.
Hi, can you cover the messed up origins of the Swan Princess, a 1994 animated film that is an adaptation of the classic ballet, Swan Lake, which tells the story of Odette, a princess turned into a swan by an evil sorcerer's curse?
There’s this mystery game I used to play called Dark Parables The swan Princess and the dire tree it’s a whole different version where she’s considered to be evil and the black swan is the hero.
I too love how they made Baldur in God of War psychotic due to his invulnerability driving him insane. Not being able to feel even life's smallest pleasures can drive someone crazy
In one version I read, while Frigg was extracting promises from 'every plant that grows from the earth' she accidentally missed the parasitic vine since it grows from other plants...
Baldur was also a caricature in the Thor comics He also had a limited series Baldur the Brave. He also married Karmila The Norne Queen. He was often referred to as the God of light
A little bit of comparative mythology here: The story of Baldur's death by Loki is similar to the deaths of the Greek Achilles, the Welsh sun god Lleu Llaw Gyffes, Bran the Blessed from Welsh mythology, the Norse hero Sigurd, and Samson from Jewish mythology. Just as Baldur was almost invincible apart from a mistletoe dart or spear, Achilles was invincible apart from his right heel which was hit by an arrow, Lleu Llaw Gyffes could only be killed by a spear, Bran the Blessed was invincible apart from a poison-tipped spear, and Sigurd's German mythology equivalent Siegfried was invincible apart from a spear. Sigurd became invincible in the first place by bathing in dragon's blood (blood is liquid), Lleu is killed when taking a bath (water is liquid), and Achilles became invincible because his mother dipped him into the river styx, which is connected to the underworld (rivers are water which is liquid, and the underworld here can be compared to Sigurd's dragon blood because dragons are similar to serpents which are creatures of the underworld). Also, just as Baldur is said to return after his death, Lleu Llaw Gyffes was resurrected after he was killed. Samson was invincible apart from his lover Delilah getting him to reveal the secret of his strength, which was his long hair. So Delilah plotted with the Philistines who cut off Samson's hair while he was sleeping. This is similar to the story of Lleu Llaw Gyffes whose unfaithful cheating wife Blodeuedd plotted with her new lover Gronw Pebyr to kill Lleu. It is also similar to how Loki had to attain the secret of Baldur's weakness from Frigg.
@@marybaldwin5944 Some of these stories, such as Samson and Llew Llaw Gyffes, deal with femme fatales, so your point about women in these stories is probably true.
Lots of mythologies are similar in a lot of cases. Especially when you compare greek/roman to the norse. Even when looking further away you will see creation myths sounding awfully similar, or what the world revolves around. But wether that it due to word of mouth from people travelling, or different cultures just ending up with the same conclusion (or something third) is hard to tell.
I'm so happy! Loki is my favorite but Baldur has a special place in my heart. I voted for him and seen the results and got sad but I'm so glad you're doing his story!!!!
This videos intro alone... I've watched a few of your Messed up Origins videos.. but so far. The intro takes the cake! 🤣 Ppl voted for Loki. But you give them something a bit more important to the mythos of the Norse in Baulder. And quite frankly. I don't know that I knew of him as anything other than a part of the overall Mythos. I knew he "existed," but not much else. One tends to hyper focus on what's popular. ie:Thor, Odin, Loki..
I actually had the pleasure of learning about Baldur in my ancient world literature class, but it was nice to see the story again after the years! I guess my professor knew a gem of a story when she saw one.
I dug into Norse mythology about 20 years ago, and again more recently. A lot more resources are available now. It's actually great. I think you have a point not enough people know about Baldur. But I think Heimdall is more interesting, though just as much underrepresented. Tyr is another who can join this crowd.
I’m very interested in going down the rabbit-hole that is the disparate origins of the Aesir and Vanir, respectively. That is to say, their origins on earth more than their origins in the mythology. I have heard it hypothesized that they were possibly originally different pantheons belonging to different tribes or even cultural groups and were joined at some distant point as Germanic tribes began to form and spread. Very interesting stuff, the origins of such ancient religions.
I don´t know if any one has commented about it yet, but here in Iceland when we talk about condensation (when cold stuff gets wet in warm rooms), we tend to say "everything cries for Baldur", "allir hlutir gráta Baldur" like it is the reason for the condensation. (sry about my english)
I'm from denmark and here some(all?) schools teach the students about the mythos and when you tell a bunch of 8-10 year olds that Thor kicked a dwarf unto a burning boat you get a riot of laughing kids.
Man poor Baldr, and poor Loki’s family. Like I don’t feel bad for Loki, but his family didn’t do anything to deserve what happened to them, humanoid and non humanoid respectively.
This makes me so happy. I'ma history major who loves mythology. I study any and every mythology I can. Hearing you do the lesser known gods makes me happy!!!
I voted for Baldur, specifically because you NEVER hear anything about him in the media, glad he got the episode even though only a few of us voted for him.
Baldur was in an old episode of "The Adventures of Hercules" with Kevin Serbo as the main star. Which he ensures Serbo's character he is indestructible and is killed off by an arrow with the blood of a god.

To the mistletoe part (we learn this in school as it is our history) we are told that everything in the world agreed never to hurt Baldr, but they forgot to ask the mistletoe either because Loke hid it from the world or because forgetfulness (Loke is ever only hinted in some variants of the story to be behind the mistletoe)

You seem to have a major misunderstanding of what is good and evil - his children were just his children, and not specifically “evil”. Same with Loke - he isn´t “evil” he just does what he does for the fun of it, since the other gods refer to him plenty of times for help.
Jon: do you want Thor, Loki, buldar or Heimdall
Community: Loki
Jon: did I hear buldar
Man, Loki's gonna be pissed about this. He may invade earth again 😂
maybe lol
Let him come
@@kentuckywildcatgobigblue7190 I'll be so happy
Well He did kill Baldur so I guess invading earth won't be necessary
If he comes in the former of Tom hiddleston then I'm cool with it

You are one of the best TH-camr's at incorporating a commercial into your content. It's pretty brilliant.
Bless you for front running him over the two "obvious" choices. Love his mythology, and definitely agree, about his death.
Baldur in myths: “oh I’m sorry did I accidentally bump into you here I’ll help.”
God Of War Baldur: “bish you wanna throw hands?”
This is great. I took multiple college level courses in mythology and hardly anything was mentioned of Baldur beyond “Ppl loved him and Loki got him killed.”

Well that and Simonson's Thor run as well as some other Thor storylines such as Rune King.
True
Hey Jon. I think another lesser known Norse god to cover would be Tyr. Since the main thing he is known for is also being mentioned in God of War
I can agree with this... And the story about his hand... 🤯
I'm eager to cover Tyr but I'm tryna hold off until the next God of War game comes out in case we learn more about his story in that universe
That's understandable
@@brandonhey7797 And the way he lost it from a agreement with Fenrir was bad ass as well.
@@JonSolo what a prophet
I love that you don't give your fans what they SAY they want, you give them what they ACTUALLY want. No one knows what they want until they have it! Great work my dude! :D
Not going to lie I only ever had a passing knowledge of him until playing God of War and then I started to look into him and he's pretty cool I love these Norse videos can't wait for the next one
His story is rarely told but his name is everywhere. There's a lot of characters in ancient war movies, but really featured as a warrior/leader of warriors.
...or an evil war entity.
There’s actually a anime that has as side/male leads Gods like hades, Apollo, Loki, Baldur ecc...
Kamigami No Asobi?
Name?
It sounds like it would be an interesting watch!
Hi, can you cover the messed up origins of the Swan Princess, a 1994 animated film that is an adaptation of the classic ballet, Swan Lake, which tells the story of Odette, a princess turned into a swan by an evil sorcerer's curse?
I Really Hope He See's This! Odette was my favorite Princess! (After that it was Bell)
Odette😍
@@Bisexualdragon4042 Love The Swan Princess ^_^
There’s this mystery game I used to play called Dark Parables The swan Princess and the dire tree it’s a whole different version where she’s considered to be evil and the black swan is the hero.
I too love how they made Baldur in God of War psychotic due to his invulnerability driving him insane. Not being able to feel even life's smallest pleasures can drive someone crazy
In one version I read, while Frigg was extracting promises from 'every plant that grows from the earth' she accidentally missed the parasitic vine since it grows from other plants...
My daughter and and I watch these as an intro to mythology. She’s 3 and loves these.
My mans went from:
jon "boobies and movies" solo
To the jon-gasm
And finally jon not-so solo
All in like 10 years. Mad respect, keep up the grind bro💪
What?
His first video was boobies and movies
Didn’t finish watching it as I’m at work but I already know that I will be subbing for the other takes.
Ooh, I'm so glad that you covered Baldur. I was sad when I realized he probably wouldn't win because Baldur's story is so interesting to me
Love you Gunther! Great work on researching this. My mind would be so lost😵
Baldur was also a caricature in the Thor comics He also had a limited series Baldur the Brave. He also married Karmila The Norne Queen. He was often referred to as the God of light
Did he resurrect like in the myths or stay in the world of the dead?
@@hackman669 After the Ragnarok, he comes back to life and be the new ruler.
I appreciate a guy who runs polls the way you do. Very mindful.
Love how you twisted your poll!! Genius!
I love you for choosing this! 😍😍😍
A little bit of comparative mythology here:
The story of Baldur's death by Loki is similar to the deaths of the Greek Achilles, the Welsh sun god Lleu Llaw Gyffes, Bran the Blessed from Welsh mythology, the Norse hero Sigurd, and Samson from Jewish mythology.
Loki's punishment is also similar to that of Prometheus.
So...the message here is that if a man can avoid bathing, grooming and women, he can stay strong and pure?
@@marybaldwin5944 Some of these stories, such as Samson and Llew Llaw Gyffes, deal with femme fatales, so your point about women in these stories is probably true.
Lots of mythologies are similar in a lot of cases. Especially when you compare greek/roman to the norse. Even when looking further away you will see creation myths sounding awfully similar, or what the world revolves around. But wether that it due to word of mouth from people travelling, or different cultures just ending up with the same conclusion (or something third) is hard to tell.
@@marybaldwin5944 yes
I'm so happy! Loki is my favorite but Baldur has a special place in my heart. I voted for him and seen the results and got sad but I'm so glad you're doing his story!!!!
All I knew about Baldur was that he had a gate. Thanks for filling in the vast gaps in my knowledge.
That.... That was actually a really good use of the pole system. 👏👏👏
That was really good thanks Jon Baldur is the man for me. Everytime I hear about Loki im filled with rage.
lightning actually struck my house at the same time as his trick.
I don´t know if any one has commented about it yet, but here in Iceland when we talk about condensation (when cold stuff gets wet in warm rooms), we tend to say "everything cries for Baldur", "allir hlutir gráta Baldur" like it is the reason for the condensation. (sry about my english)
Yea! One of my favourite gods. He even makes an appearance in Hercules, starring Kevin Sorbo.
I'm from denmark and here some(all?) schools teach the students about the mythos and when you tell a bunch of 8-10 year olds that Thor kicked a dwarf unto a burning boat you get a riot of laughing kids.
Baldur is underrated and probably the strongest brother
Man poor Baldr, and poor Loki’s family. Like I don’t feel bad for Loki, but his family didn’t do anything to deserve what happened to them, humanoid and non humanoid respectively.
The best timing for a messed up solo 😍

I'm a mythology geek too!
Thanks!
I need an episode of his mom. And the valkires*

Baldur also pops up in Kamigami no Asorbi, so I looked it up years ago back when I first watched the anime to see how accurate they represented his character, that and Throth (Eyptian god) since those were the only two I hadn't heard of
In Denmark his name is spelled “Balder” so I was first a little confused when I didnt know who “Baldur” was 😅 Balder is my favorit norse mythology god, so im excited that you chose to talk about him 😊

I really enjoy Jon's presentation and appreciate the work he goes into to tell tales in the way he does. He is a fantastic story teller. My Mother and Father were older and as an only child their main gift was entertainment. They used to enjoy storytelling so much. I've listened to him for a few years now and noticed how much he's grown and I appreciate his humility as well as his craft. After a hard day or when I'm feeling too much emotion I find his stories very soothing! Thank you very much Jon for your art! I hate to make it about gender, but it makes me very happy to see a male embrace storytelling as I think they have a unique knack for it. I love that you decided to do this episode on Baldur even though he got the least amount of votes, I might be a little biased seeing as he’s who I voted for 😏
this dude lowkey getting better with this whole youtube thing
The "real" version of Baldur I like to believe in is the one from The Almighty Johnsons, the only reason I know about Norse mythology 😂
So I suppose Balder(the Father of Bayonetta) is named after the Shining God, I guess?
That lagertha clip was enough for this to be my fav vid of yours ijs
Hell yeah, I voted on this one! Thanks Jon!

9:22 Theory: Mistletoe is associated with Christmas and, by extension, Christians. So... Were the Norse at war with the Chritians?
That was a smooth transition John
There might be a lost origin myth about mistletoe associated with Baldr's death.
Surely there is. But unless someone invents the time machine we'll never know it.

Well, there is the tradition of kissing under the mistletoe. The plant fruits in winter, so maybe it has something to do with fertility.
