The reason flashing isn't a thing, or as popular with Mercury, is because it requires other physical mods. The Yamaha 200-250hp SHO is truly a detuned 335hp motor, no mods required to get it there other than the flash itself.
NIZPRO flashed my Yamaha F300 on my 2021 Cobia 240 DC, did it for hole shot and mid-range cruise performance (heavier boat 6,000 lbs). Got exactly what I hoped for mid range performance through channel navigation at 25 - 30 MPH requires way less throttle adjustments and my cruise fuel economy went from 2.6 MPG to 3.4 MPG! Also gained about 300 RPM on top end which allowed me to add more cup to the prop🤩. MPG alone makes this worth it as my average trip into the Gulf is 55 miles. Ideally I would be happier with the new 4.3 F350 but my boat is rated for 300 so this $900 Flash is way cheaper than buying the same boat rated for 350 HP.
I called and asked yamaha warranty department about hydrotec and they said in no uncertain terms my warranty was void if I flashed the ecu, even if the rev limiter is left at factory spec. I was hoping to be able to flash mine but probably won't until the warranty is expired.
I used to feel that way too about a life vest, but then I realized it's not about my ability to control the boat as that it's about my ability to stay conscious, and awake to do so. I had a friend of the family have a heart attack while driving a bass boat and the only thing that saved his life was a vest and kill switch. I've heard of a few other instances of people passing out due to other health related issues from heat stroke/exhaustion, dehydration, etc. There has also been an instant where a guy couldn't see due to the evening sun shining directly in the eyes and got too close to some downed tree branches and is no longer here. Things happen way outside of one's control too much for me to always wear a life vest when in a moving boat.
I used Hydrotec when I flashed my new SHO 200. If you send the ECU to them, it's only $700. On a 2000 Stratos 20SS I gained about 10 mph over the 200 setup exactly the same. Now running 77-78 mph, and needing more setup time to hit 80
Where's the Suzuki info? I have a 115 that I would like to have flashed to at least a 140 since according to the speca they are the same engines, love your channel.
Also interested in this question for a DF90 which shares the same engine block as a DF70. Both can flash up to 100 hp max. Is a small flash for a DF90 a worthwhile upgrade? They appear to cost the same $$... Has anyone on this channel done this for a DF90?
I really want to hear about the Suzuki flashing. It doesn’t have to be a personal endorsement of the product. I’ll research and take my chances. Thanks!
I’ve been waiting for this talk! Excited to watch this one, I been watching lots of videos on the nizpo 332hp tunes for the svho. Cuz we know the 4.2 Yamaha 200/225/250/300 are the same engine.
Nizpro flash you can get installed for $650-750. The supercharger kit you can get installed for 11K. Yamaha does not void warranty for Nizpro flash. Unless you install the 7100 RPM tune. Keep up the great videos Andy!
I started watching this channel when i was looking at getting a new outboard. went with susuki df50. Wish he told us about the Suzuki tune company!....big fan.
I’ve got a DF50 too. Runs 36mph with just me in my 17’ duck hunting boat. With more setup I think it would hit 38-40. But I think with a flash to 60hp it would easily do 38 with 2-3 people in my boat. And should be an easy flash to 60, and I’ve heard a few people install the 60hp ECU and another part or two from the 60
Lundins Marin here in Sweden upgrades/flashes Mercury engines. Both old and new. They have been doing it for a very long time. The work on all the major brands
I would love to see some merch with Team Marine and Suzuki on it if that’s possible! I bought my first Suzuki outboard in 2021 and was unsure of it because I didn’t know much about them at the time and that’s when I found your videos and realized they are quality outboards from your videos which Reassured me I bought a good outboard. Keep up the good work Team Marine!
You can't flash a Merc because they threatened to sue any company who offers a flash. This information is publicly available, Simons and Whipple used to do it. Yamaha doesn't care, they have more things going on. On a 4 stroke, especially with variable cam timing and throttle by wire, flashing makes a lot of sense. This stuff is really common in the power sports market, there is a lot to get out of these motors. The company in the US that does ECU flashes for Yamaha outboards has a long history of success, not going to mention them here, do a search.
My sons race yamaha dirt bikes and they re-map their ecu with the yamaha power tuner and now the newest bikes are ble to be mapped via smartphone, very trick and one of the reasons we have been on yamaha bikes since they were just little guys racing in the mini class.
Hey there. Just wanna tell that Lundins marine in Sweden, just did a flash of my Mercury Optimax from 75-115 Hp. Also know he does other brands and other tunes. So here is a good resource to flash Mercury.
I love the honesty!!! Just found this video and am very interested in flashing a Suzuki. I have a 115 hp on Vexus AVX189. At some point, (when you can) give me some guidance on flashing this motor. Thanks for what you do!
I was shocked you picked the 200 merc, wondering why you didn't pick a yamaha. Then for the 225 you didn't pick a mercury which I thought was basically the same as the 200? I want a 818 but I wouldn't think a 150 would be enough if you had a full tank, livewell, 10ft power poles and co angler.
I want to flash the SHO 150 on my Vexus AVX1980. I swear that boat is severely underpowered with a 150. 52 mph top speed with a tournament load and two people.
Honestly good to hear theres no good way to flash a merc. my transom is only rated for 115 and ive sorta been itching to look into it. Nice to remove the temptation
What effect does flashing have on the stern of the boat itself? Meaning I have 2006 ranger that is rated for a 225 max engine size. If I flashed the engine to more horsepower will it cause cracking or damage to stern of boat. Not that I think I can flash a hpdi. If I can flash the engine what would be the difference if I went. And just put a new 250 on the boat. Can the bass boats handle it or is that rated for engine max size taken loosely. Great video keep up the great work you do.
You mentioned the Suzuki, I just bought a 200 and still haven't got the speed out of it my old HPDI did when it was new. The Yamaha 200 would push my Skeeter ZX202 around 67-68 and the Suzuki won't get me to 63. Do you think this "flashing will do the trick? I'd like to see that magic # of 70.
I've watched some nizpro videos and they are pretty crazy. I mean to put 4 or 500 horsepower on a bass boat is crazy. Man that's fast if u wanna go 110 plus lol I wonder what the record is for a bass boat. I think it's like 115-120 mph
hey from NZ, I'd be keen on one of those t shirts with a lifejacket printed on it. I'd buy for sure. Too funny. Our maritime law is life jacket is mandatory for boats under 6m. My boat is a 6.5m so i don't have to wear it anyway, but it'll be funny to wear the shirt on the boat.
I had my 75 hp Merc 4 stroke flashed by Simmons motor sports back when they could still do them. Mercury slapped their hands, and they no longer do it. Made a huge difference on my Crestliner VT17 tin boat. Turned a 38mph tin turd into a 50mph ride. Had to go up two inches of prop pitch.
It's not available on Mercury yet because no one has cracked the ECU yet. Just like the auto manufacturers, they lock their ECU's down. That doesn't stop people from cracking that encryption and tuning them. That being said, most people that own boats just want them to be reliable. And definitely don't want to go messing with things while they are under warranty. And the cost of going from a 250 Pro XS to a 300R isn't that much money. I imagine once there are a lot more of these newer Merc's out of warranty we might see more interest in tuning.
People that want to flash a Merc will end up with a product like in motorcycles called a Power Commander. It goes into the harness down stream of the ECM and can modify what is being sent to the engine.
Would love to know who to use for Suzuki I have a 60 hp boats rated for a 90. I need help getting out of the hole and on pad. Can’t find much on the used market for 90s
Can I just purchase a used 90hp Merc ECM and remove the restrictor plate in my 75hp and it’s that easy?? No immobilizer or code needed is that what I heard?
Now don't laugh, but would it be worth flashing a 2009 Yamaha 60 four stroke? Boat is rated at 90, but only have 60 on it. would love to possibly get to 90 horse on my tin rig for the 700 bucks everyone is saying it costs.
Hey Andy love your videos especially the shop videos and more technical videos I love to learn 👍. But I do have a question about 2 years ago I done the donate money on your website for you to answer a technical question I had on a mercury. And I never got a reply back to my emails I’m not mad about it I’m just curious if something happened and that’s the reason I never heard back from you or anyone on your team. Keep up the good work and let’s get some mercury modifying videos 😁
Nizpro flashed a 2018 Yamaha 250 SHO. Changed the prop to a Mercury Enertia 19. Night and day performance. Only issue is, it wiped out all of the previous ecm history. No technical data. So far so good on reliability.
Hydrotec are thieves. I rejected an additional rebuild. Went to pick up my boat and when I got home I discovered they kept all my internal motor parts. When I called to ask where it was. Their response was. “We didn’t think you wanted those”. Only one piston was bad out of 6. And the crank was in great condition. Buyer beware.
Yes and most transoms have enuffstress on them with jackplates and powerpoles and 700lb engines. Add the extra torque and you just ruined your hull in a few years. @@badbrad936 Yeah I found a source. If I don't sell my 625 I will be flashing it this winter. They said 15-25more hp which I think will get this thing running like it should.
So John, Clive and Andrew all have a 250 SHO and all have the same tune ? How can 1 tune work on all motors ? We always got told no 2 motors are the same ?
The same way all the ecus are programmed the same from factory. Mfrs don’t micro-tune individual engines. Will a flash get you the absolute best tune for your individual motor? Probably not. Will it change ignition timing and afr ranges and the conditions the ecu is looking for? Yes.
@@apdude100 see that being the question, The AFR will change, but how would one know if its 100% correct as a to lean motor or to rich motor is looking for trouble. Once to lean or to rich the ECU can only adapt so much. So yes idle is good, par throttle good but full taps running rich or lean ? And that being my worry with plug n play tunes.
The hatred of Evinrude is real and completely unnecessary. There is a guy who has who rebuilt Evinrude Etec 250 with velocity stacks and all new forged internals he also got someone to deconstruct the Etec codes and flash It. It now revs to 7000 RPM. I've seen video of the boat The motor is a short shaft with a sport-master gear case. 20ft boat goes 100 MPH + YAMAHA will come after Mercury with a vengence. Mercury has had the Hi-Po limelight for far too long and they are about to have their a$$ handed to them.
@@TrumpsEarBandage There are state and federal laws that you can't overpower your boats rating. I just don't know if flashing falls under that. The sheriff dept patrols on our lakes.
I flashed my Yamaha 2023 250 SHO and gained 4+ MPH, which also improved my MPG. Thank you, Hydro Tec!

@@badbrad936 Yeah I found a source. If I don't sell my 625 I will be flashing it this winter. They said 15-25more hp which I think will get this thing running like it should.
Flash an Evinrude? 😂😅😂😅 Evinrude's got enough EMM problems, lol. If it's running consider yourself a lottery winner already.
Your old and experienced.. at a certain age safety is second or 18th.. lol
Let's Go Andy
I would have you work on my boat
Honda needs a tune the most. Surely somebody can squeeze some power out of that block.
I want a Team Marine branded... "Dont wear your lifejacket or kill switch if your a badass like me" T Shirt!
Tshirt that says “i identify as a life jacket”
20ft boat goes 100 MPH +
YAMAHA will come after Mercury with a vengence. Mercury has had the Hi-Po limelight for far too long and they are about to have their a$$ handed to them.
At least wear a kill switch. I didn’t really hear a good reason not to.
Any flashing available for an older 2004johnson 140 4stroke? If so any idea what gains look like
👍
What about a tohatsu 50 any flash tunes for those ?
That's blazing for a 200 on a 20
So does that over power your boat hp rating and can you get pinched for it.?
Pinched by who?
@@TrumpsEarBandage There are state and federal laws that you can't overpower your boats rating. I just don't know if flashing falls under that. The sheriff dept patrols on our lakes.
