Primus : The Story of D&Ds Perfect God

- DnD 5e Primus does not get a lot of love in the lore, only mentioned when discussing another deity or race. But this "Immortal" Ruler of Mechanus and Modeons sets in motion the law of all the planes, and keeps order where there is chaos. Throughout all 5 editions we get some great info and stories on this mysterious god, in this forgotten lore.

Orcus' time as The Prime didn't leave Mechanus completely unscathed. One of the Secundus absorbed some of his evil energies, causing them to view all good creatures as inherently chaotic. They now lead a contingent of Modrons somewhere on the Plane of Acharon, plotting to usurp the current Primus.
Ya I only briefly mentioned rogue Modrons. I believe in the original story Dead Gods or Great Modron March(or both) this didn’t happen, but they add it elsewhere. But yes Orcus did corrupt some of them, great point!

Honestly, I'm starting to think that Promise is less a being or even a concept, but is instead the will of Mechanus made into being. Seeing as how Primus seems almost rooted into place, always coming out of the energy that can only come from Nirvana. As well, if we think of Mechanus as a single machine, then it would make sense that the master of Nirvana, the supercomputer brain with control of the plane, would be a part of it.
It would also make sense why Primus' death doesn't cause the upheaval of say...Mystra's. Primus dying doesn't cause anything close the level of the Spellplague, or even have any adverse effects. This only really makes sense to me if Primus is the face of Mechanus, the focal point of a divine power held not by a being, but by the realm as a whole
Great theory, I think this is probably pretty true. Even though we see deities as a great unique power, Primus is really just another cog in the system of Mechanus, if he goes down he can always be replaced.

In my game world, Primus and the modrons ensure that the machines of Mechanus continue to function. Mechanus provides the stabilizing energy that keeps the soul energy flowing. Souls energy flows from the positive energy plane to the various primes to create life. Upon death the energy flows to the upper planes where over time it merges with the upper planes and is broken up into it's elemental components and flows to power the elemental planes. Once it has expended it's elemental properties it becomes negative energy and flows down thru the negative energy plane to be re-energized in the positive plane. Mechanus is the pump that keeps the soul flow moving. Without it all of creation would slowly stop. The end of the multiverse happens when Primus fails, the Modrons develop free will, abandon their duties and Mechanus grinds to a halt.
That's awesome! I love hearing what people develop the limited lore that we have into. I feel like that's one of the hardest world building things for some DM's in my opinion, taking this info and developing it into something unique and creative that still feels organic in their world especially if your players end up finding some way to get to Mechanus.
The idea of true lawful is really interesting like true chaos if no good or no evil exist meaning they don’t care about anything besides following and supporting law.

I would say all life itself wills Primus into existence. The need for order. For the desire to create balance within a chaotic universe. To apply rules where rules never existed is the the life blood of Primus. Even the abyss itself in its inherit random chaotic maelstrom nature has its own logic and balance to things.
I like to see the Saladi as being a weapon that Primus enginered and could use if the blood war goes south. Also the spawning stone nerfed the raw power of the saladi lords that came before the stone. Primus is the cats meow.
Ya I like to think part of his plans are no one knows what he is really up to, only he knows what something will lead to. And I agree!

I think all Modrons including Primus are the limbs of Mechanus. You can't kill a plain of existence.
Him creating the chaos race was not an accident, they bring balance to the modrons.

I couldn't help but think something like the flow of time was in the purview of Primus.. I actually don't know a whole lot about this as I haven't had a lot of interest in this particular lore. Cool stuff. If I were to guess Mechanus is basically the foundation of how the universe (the inner outer upper and lower planes of existence) are supposed to work.. but It feels like he should almost be true neutral rather than LN if he created the Slaad and delt with Chaos. Anyway just some random thoughts.
The one thing I remember about Primus is that no adventurer has a snowball's chance in hell against him. He the ultimate immortal questgiver.
I'm still convinced this is the Transformer's creator god who travelled to dnd.

I wish we knew more about the greater beings of the planes that aren’t actual gods and are one of a kind such as the tome archons I could see them being equivalent to greater gods or even greater gods but primus I feel like would be a decently strong god but not too strong.

To be fair, D&D has been around so long, has so many stories/characters, and is so prolific in the fantasy genre, it's really hard NOT to rip something off from existing materials.

What would happen if a god of true chaos became primus?
This is what happened to Orcus, not technically a god when it happened(although close). I honestly think the position itself is more impactful, it would drive the god to law more than the other way
I don't like this last word ability that orcas has it's to much power for him primus should be stronger than him.
Ya it definitely is not my favorite plot device ever, Orcus gets killed then he’s like I found a power that lets me kill anything in a word. Then he loses it soon after. They did Primus dirty, all hail the One and the Prime
