Thing is, as I understand it, the Svartalfr (dark/swarthy elves) were nothing like the drow we think of today, or any of the dark elves in modern fantasy. In fact, I've heard a lot of speculation that this was another name for dwarves. Yeah, in Norse mythology it's been argued that dwarves are actually dark elves.
Norse mythology has provided with so much to fantasy. Even more than what’s mentioned here that’s less known.. the Santa Claus’ elfs are called “Nisse” (Nisser in plural). The Mare (Gave people bad dreams… hence nightmare), Nökken, and as it was mentioned in the video dark elves but also light elves, Fossegrimen, Huldra, Vordr, Draugr (ofc), Ratatoskr, Norns, Valkyries and ofc. plentiful magical animals. And contrary to Tolkien’s interpretation and DnD by extension; the color of the dwarves skin is not what we normally depict them, but they’re “blacker than ink and dwell inside stones and mountains, in a place called Svartalfheim”.

They are just similar in height to humans of Midgard some shorter, some taller and normal Alf (roughly equivalent Tolkien Elves) of Maybe with better night vision and better smithing/technology/magic (2 Svartalfr smith brothers, having made the God weapons - Mjolnir, Gungnir and the Magical chain/ribbon for the binding of Fenrir) and are generally physically strong, somewhere between Humans and Jotnar.. Also Svartalheim is either a realm of darkness or a realm all underground, so some myths put them as Super pale white skinned or Ink black skinned.
@@taco9061 Having read most books on Norse mythology, I can confirm. Like the rings and spear(Gungnir) of Odin was not conceived by dwarves but dark elves(svartalv, they also live underground) . That's how it's always described in Norwegian at least. And I really understand the confusion since the archetype of the dwarf and dark elf is exactly the same. One could imagine delf sounding like dwarf with some imagination and and linguistic issues when the mythology was conceived, and we're there. Long post, hopefully someone finds it interesting. =)
"These guys invented fantasy" You're not far off! A lot of modern fantasy comes from a mix of Norse mythology and Celtic folklore. Epic fantasy as a modern genre was popularized by Tolkien, who openly admired and very clearly drew from Norse mythology when he was writing the early drafts of the Silmarillion, which became the background for the Lord of the Rings. Since the rest of the genre pulled from LOTR, it also took a lot of those Norse elements. If you're interested in learning more about mythology and writing tropes, I'd recommend checking out Overly Sarcastic Productions. They've got some really great videos on the subject.
I wouldn't exactly credit Tolkein with the influence of Norse mythology on modern fantasy. The fact is these myths on their own have inspired fantasy writers from before and after Tolkein. The war-hungry vikings described in this video resemble a lot more Robert E. Howard's Conan mythos for example. Actually, much of everything Barbarian and sword and sorcery adjacent comes in large part from Howard. Acererak was likely inspired by Thulsa Doom. Tolkein's impact can't be understated, but LOTR being the basis of all modern western fantasy? Nah.

@@piketheknight2581 There was a theory based on a few texts where the idea for 'Dark elves' might have just resulted from the mistranslation of the word of 'dwarf', so some guy(s) may have just mistranslated something, which is no surprise considering for houndreds of years norse stories were only passed on vocally, which if you've ever played a game of telephone, ends terribly. As a matter of fact, past few decades we've realized a ton of terms from norse mythology have been mistranslations, or misunderstandings, especially since many things were translated through multiple languages. But not so much that it's mattered all that much.
Its also the perfect opportunity to have your kobold party member make a howdah and the goblin to snipe from it. Finally get to be that true walking fortress.

A natural warrior whose main calling was fighting would go to Valhalla regardless of gender. There's nothing in the RL Norse lore I'm aware of that precludes women from ending up in Valhalla, and there are examples of renown warriors among women and the Gods (see, for example, Skadhi). Destinations aren't certain, but it's more likely than not that there are women in Valhalla.

My last/first pc, a devout follower of thor, ended up in ysgard after about 4 years of play shortly after he hit lvl 20, a lot cooler after having listened to this video, great job!
I've always wondered what the CR and stats of a Valkyrie would be, and how they'd stack up against other celestials if converted to 5e. I've seen homebrew that puts them at CR9, CR11 and CR30, but none of those are an actual conversion of older edition stats(presumably they'd be over CR 11 if their freaking horses are CR12)
@@agentchaos9332 Book of nine sword version is CR9. The deities and demigods version is a bit trickier, as they have no CR assigned, but they are lvl20 paladin quasi-deities, which basically means they are level 0 gods with matching superpowers.
The nature of their conflicts are the polar opposite where asgard conflict is all about "you", your challenges and journey. Archeron conflict is meaningless attrition that deprives the fighters of "you", your just another combatant and there is no glory only the desperate fight for spiteful survival.
There is a pattern here, like how Elysium and Hades (described as literally the goodest and the evilest planes of the multiverse) both has the ability to entrap their visitors.

There are both petitioners and planars, I assume Ysgardian dwarves are a separate race of dwarves, but I assume they would welcome any dwarven petitioners

Hmm...so your description is directly in conflict with AJ pickets, as far as the lower layers of Musphelheim and Nidavilir. My understanding has always been that the top " layer" of Ysgard/Gladheim consisted of land burgs and floating islands, but they were all suspended over one massive solid land below( musphelheim) and that Nidavilir consisted of the underground caverns beneath Musphelheim. Also idk about using floating landmasses or lack of gravity to denote chaotic plains, considering Acheron is lawful and functions the same way
Also “Heroic Death” is very specific and DOES NOT INCLUDE BACKSTABBING. Loki killing everyone from behind (in the Marvel Movies) basically means he sends them automatically to Helheim, no questions or objections allowed.
@@PetroBeherha Probably not. Dying facing your opponent was the most honorable part of combat in Norse culture. Turning your back on an opponent is a bit of a bad idea anyway, at least if your opponent is still capable of attacking.
I don't think 5e does, and I've never played 4e, so Idk there, but I have like 10 years of experience in 3.5 and never seen anything there either, but that doesn't mean there wasn't, so maybe?

Is there death beyond death in D&D? I'm aware that there are scenarios where if a person or(?) their spirit is slain in an outer plane they will cease to exist and not be able to be resurrected. That makes sense, but is there anything within D&D that has detailed something in the nothingness? I'm aware I could always make stuff up for my own content, but I'm curious.
A afterlife to the afterlife would kind of defeat the purpose of a true death. If I remember right in 4th edition. It was hinted that everything eventually makes its way to the negative plane which is true oblivion.
Nobody knows what happens with spirits after perma-death. Dustmen and Believers of the Source believe that you are reincarnated, but most just think it's an eternal oblivion

Would it be lore friendly if Odin gives a mortal a 2nd chance to prove themselves within the DnD realm. I lean both ways myself. Reasoning fighter in party is a devote to Odin, but dies at early level. End game goal was to have the character die valiantly and be accepted into Ysgard for a bit of a shock and awe for the whole party. Especially if the death is not an epic death for whatever reason at a lower level. Say Rouge assassin or random poison kills them off early.

I'm trying to find more info on a lesser God of the Dwarves Hanseath, and specifically one of the ritual's of his followers. It is called "the Ritual of the Cleft Shield" mentioned in the Races of Stone addition and described as being "heartbreakingly solemn. Any idea what this would look like, what the effects of this would be. Seeing that Hanseath is a Dwarven Deity, who is CG, and has the War and Trickery Domain, I assumed he would be located in Ysgard. Drinking, Carousing, and Fighting all fit very well. Add to it that his allies are Death and Green Slaad's, just one realm over, and it really fits. Any info you can share on this would be greatly appreciated.

Tome of Battle: The Book of Nine Swords, a 3.5 sourcebook also has statistics for a valkyrie and they have an affinity for the swordsage class. How does this relate?
I believe the North culture a woman dying during childbirth was considered a noble death. And that is probably what they mean by a woman dying a noble death during childbirth would go to that hall.
3rd edition is where the d&d ruleset finally eliminated the limits set on female characters on strength. DEITIES & Demigods wS a 2nd edition product. Reprintedfor 3rd edition so as happens tge gender divide was misse However theNorse did train the noble women in war skills in real life. But this was so the women could defend their homes while the men were off trading or Vik8nging. Hence the mentality of warrior women in Norse Culture was bot the berserk chaos of the men. Hence they went to a afterlife where they continue to defend home hearth and family.

There is the maneuver-using ones of Tome of Battle‚ the quasi-deities who resurrect Einherjars from Deities & Demigods. Who are the third?

To be fair though Odin and Freyja both use Magic A LOT. They're both noted for their incredibly potent sorcery.

I find it somewhat funny that Ysgard abd Acheron, 2 planes that are litteraly opposite of the great wheel, both are a plane of constans conflict
The nature of their conflicts are the polar opposite where asgard conflict is all about "you", your challenges and journey.
Archeron conflict is meaningless attrition that deprives the fighters of "you", your just another combatant and there is no glory only the desperate fight for spiteful survival.
There is a pattern here, like how Elysium and Hades (described as literally the goodest and the evilest planes of the multiverse) both has the ability to entrap their visitors.

Actually in lore Thor stops it so your fine...on edit taiki and the previous guy did a good allusion to this in pretty much all the Marvel movies. I was impressed.(Norse dork here 2nd edition encyclopedia heh).

There are both petitioners and planars, I assume
Ysgardian dwarves are a separate race of dwarves, but I assume they would welcome any dwarven petitioners

Hmm...so your description is directly in conflict with AJ pickets, as far as the lower layers of Musphelheim and Nidavilir. My understanding has always been that the top " layer" of Ysgard/Gladheim consisted of land burgs and floating islands, but they were all suspended over one massive solid land below( musphelheim) and that Nidavilir consisted of the underground caverns beneath Musphelheim. Also idk about using floating landmasses or lack of gravity to denote chaotic plains, considering Acheron is lawful and functions the same way

Also “Heroic Death” is very specific and DOES NOT INCLUDE BACKSTABBING. Loki killing everyone from behind (in the Marvel Movies) basically means he sends them automatically to Helheim, no questions or objections allowed.

@@PetroBeherha Probably not. Dying facing your opponent was the most honorable part of combat in Norse culture. Turning your back on an opponent is a bit of a bad idea anyway, at least if your opponent is still capable of attacking.
@@PetroBeherha well, a rogue can still fulfil the "noble fighter" archetype. For example, a fencer can be a rogue that fights in honorable duels

I don't think 5e does, and I've never played 4e, so Idk there, but I have like 10 years of experience in 3.5 and never seen anything there either, but that doesn't mean there wasn't, so maybe?
Asgard got dropped along with a few other planes in 4th edition. You have to go back to 2nd edition planescape to get the real juicy goods.

Is there death beyond death in D&D? I'm aware that there are scenarios where if a person or(?) their spirit is slain in an outer plane they will cease to exist and not be able to be resurrected. That makes sense, but is there anything within D&D that has detailed something in the nothingness? I'm aware I could always make stuff up for my own content, but I'm curious.
A afterlife to the afterlife would kind of defeat the purpose of a true death. If I remember right in 4th edition. It was hinted that everything eventually makes its way to the negative plane which is true oblivion.
Nobody knows what happens with spirits after perma-death. Dustmen and Believers of the Source believe that you are reincarnated, but most just think it's an eternal oblivion

Would it be lore friendly if Odin gives a mortal a 2nd chance to prove themselves within the DnD realm. I lean both ways myself.
Reasoning fighter in party is a devote to Odin, but dies at early level. End game goal was to have the character die valiantly and be accepted into Ysgard for a bit of a shock and awe for the whole party. Especially if the death is not an epic death for whatever reason at a lower level. Say Rouge assassin or random poison kills them off early.
2nd edition legends and lore book would give you a thumbs up. Believe that was the last true supplement with "our" pantheons

I'm trying to find more info on a lesser God of the Dwarves Hanseath, and specifically one of the ritual's of his followers. It is called "the Ritual of the Cleft Shield" mentioned in the Races of Stone addition and described as being "heartbreakingly solemn. Any idea what this would look like, what the effects of this would be. Seeing that Hanseath is a Dwarven Deity, who is CG, and has the War and Trickery Domain, I assumed he would be located in Ysgard. Drinking, Carousing, and Fighting all fit very well. Add to it that his allies are Death and Green Slaad's, just one realm over, and it really fits. Any info you can share on this would be greatly appreciated.

I believe the North culture a woman dying during childbirth was considered a noble death. And that is probably what they mean by a woman dying a noble death during childbirth would go to that hall.
Do the giants of Ysgard have any relation to the giants of Torril and their god?
3rd edition is where the d&d ruleset finally eliminated the limits set on female characters on strength. DEITIES & Demigods wS a 2nd edition product. Reprintedfor 3rd edition so as happens tge gender divide was misse However theNorse did train the noble women in war skills in real life. But this was so the women could defend their homes while the men were off trading or Vik8nging. Hence the mentality of warrior women in Norse Culture was bot the berserk chaos of the men. Hence they went to a afterlife where they continue to defend home hearth and family.
