  • DnD lore is a treasure trove of lost stories in all five editions, but some of the consistent characters and monsters have changed a lot over time. In this episode of Forgotten Lore we take a look at the unfairly treated Gruumsh One-Eye, deity of all orcs, and how he has overcome the impossible odds he was dealt...

That thing about peaceful Orcs isn't from One DnD, but older editions (4th or 5th?).
There is a tribe of Orcs that popped up in Faerun after the Spellplague that were more peaceful, and they came from a world where the Orcs had won and were the dominant species so they didn't need to fight anymore.

Hmm I didn’t see this, it was mostly a joke since this was the only blurb in the new play test content. But thanks for the correction!

@@The_NaturalOnes Okay, so...I appear to have mixed up a couple of things.
I was thinking of Gray Orcs, who appear in 3rd edition, but while they are more civilised and did come through a portal from a world dominated by Orcs, they are still typically ruthless and serve Gruumsh and other Orc deities fanatically. They are still less impulsively violent than the average Forgotten Realms Orc.
There is, though, the Kingdom of Many-Arrows, which is a peaceful(ish) Orc kingdom in the North of Faerun, that sometimes engages in trade with it's non-Orc neighbours.

There also are the ondonati from 2e. They were pacifists who didn't worship Old One Eye and ended up enslaved by the Zhentarim who took advantage of their naivete. They think they originated as a group of orc orphans who were taught be devotees of Eldath. The Zhentarim were happy to use them as manual labor and tried to also turn them into killers with mixed results as they never were as violent as orcs.
In 1360, the Tuigan Horde invaded and the Zhentarim were paid to field a force of 1000 orcs. After the Horde was defeated, the orcs peacefully settled near where the last battle was fought. Its speculated that these orcs were ondonati.

The origin story of Grumsh is word by word the story of Eshu from yoruba mythology except for the severely dumbed down ending of it. In the original story after all the gods drew their lots they laughed at Eshu - asking where he will go and he answered "wherever I will" and he became a messenger to the gods who cannot be denied from any place and this role made him one of the most important god as noone would get their offerings if he wouldn't allow it - if anyone wanted to hold a ritual for a god, he would have to invoke Eshu first to bring the message. This pretty much translated into voodoo later.

He's like a guy with a repo man taking his above ground swimming pool away.
"You can take the pool, but it has holes all over it and can't hold water."
"It's full of water right now. There aren't any holes."
"Really? *hefts pitchfork* I'll point them out for you? *stabs pool* See those? And look! *stabs pool* there are a few more. Let me check the other sides... *stab* *stab* *stab* Yeah, actually I've been meaning to return it."

With a lot of lore in dnd it depends on edition and even then different artists have different interpretations. Currently 5e, the lore is that he has an eyepatch and the eye was taken by Corellon. A lot of orcs might assert that he was always had one eye though, like a cyclops

Thank you for reminding me that he was Lawful Evil in the beginning. In my setting, Grummsh supplanted the Norse pantheon and replaced the norse deities with his orcs. I am still putting it together in my setting, but that is my idea for a first step towards his revenge.

It wasn't a fair fight. Lolth, before she became the Spider Queen, helped Corellan so she could succor Gruumsh and take him as an ally to take out Correllan so she could take control of the Elvish Pantheon. Coralpon Larethion eventually caught wind and stopped her. Thus began the story of the Spider Queen

Personally, I don't at all ascribe to 4th or 5th Edition lore unless it fits into my headcanon. That's just me tho. My headcanon of The Forgotten Realms stops at The Time of Troubles. Either play before, during, or after the events recorded in the Time of Troubles 2nd Ed. AD&D Lore.
