    Demogorgon is a lesser god in both ADnD and in 2nd edition and clearly the most powerful Demon in the game. In BECMI he was an immortal, basically a god. 5th edition Demogorgon is the weakest version yet. Not impressive at all, Orcus is probably more powerful.

    I feel the most egregious is the Githyanki and (Just most monsters from the Fiend Folio) because it’s multiple layers of people getting Screwed over. Games Workshop (The company that laters goes on to make Warhammer) had a Column in their Magazine called Fiend Factory, where readers can submit their own monsters. One of those readers is a then Teenager named Charles Stross, and Charles Stross is probably one of the most iconic monster creators in D&D History being responsible for the Death Knight, Slaad, and the Gith. Charles Stross needed a name for the race of space raiders he created and remembered a name of a minor alien race from a Book called “Dying of the Light” which was at the time the biggest work of an American Sci-Fi writer named George R.R. Martin (The man who would later go on to write Game of Thrones), Oops. Not trying to shit on Stross too much, as I said he was a Teenager at the time, he’s spoken about his regret, and it was a fairly minor bit of plagiarism. Plus Stross got screwed over too by Games Workshop since the compensation for submitting a monster for Fiend Factory was a Free Copy of White Dwarf Magazine and maybe a few pounds. And then Games Workshop and TSR would go on to come to an agreement to publish a bunch of iconic monsters from Fiend Factory in a book called the Fiend Folio. And the payment for all the creators who got their monsters in an official D&D Book? A free or discounted copy of the Fiend Folio!!! (Only available in certain regions. Also TSR and GW had a falling out and all mentions of White Dwarf was scrubbed from the Fiend Folio. And of course a lot of the monsters that were in the Fiend Folio would go onto be mainstays of D&D for decades to come, including the Githyanki who went on to heavily feature in the Story of Baldur’s Gate 3, one of the most successful Videos of all time. Also Micheal Moorcock was probably plagiarized several times during the course of that story too, because 70s/80s Fantasy (Especially British Fantasy) needs to plagiarize Micheal Moorcock or else the author is publicly executed and their souls are devoured by the Gods of Law and/or Chaos.

    I love your presentation on this, it's very good! 👍 I would like to point out that much of Neogi lore is focused around how most of them are pirates, very focused around their use of spelljamming ships, more so than most other races actually. It's true that there are some in the underdark, but the vast majority of Neogi are scattered throughout the astral sea on ships and on stuff like asteroids and small planets that other races don't want. Also, a big theme is that almost nobody will do business with them. Even races that will do business with fiends and Mindflayers won't deal with Neogi, because they will consistently double cross everyone they interact with whenever possible. I don't mean this as a complaint about the video, I just thought I would add what I know

    If available, the Ravenloft novels "King of the Dead", and "Lord of the Necropolis", are excellent reads. They detail Azalin's "adventures" in the Lands of Dread. In the first book, "King of the Dead", Irik is indeed brought to the Lands of Dread, with his father Firan/Azalin. At the end of that story, the Dark Powers release his spirit, to ascend, and replace it with a "fake Irik", complete with all the original's memories/behaviors, to torment Azalin. I won't ruin the whole story, since it a great story. But, at the end of "Lord of the Necropolis", Azalin is actually absorbed into the "gestalt" that makes up the Dark Powers. It's really fascinating! I also knew that after Azalin's disappearance, that Il Aluk became "Necropolis". But, I didn't know about him returning, after these events. I'll have to do some further research/reading. Thanks for renewing my interest! My favorite Ravenloft characters were Lord Soth, and Azalin, followed by Strahd in 3rd place.

  • @dominicjherr
    @dominicjherr หลายเดือนก่อน

    Great video, about a great character! I read, and absolutely loved, the old Ravenloft books. The demiplane of the Lands of Dread were a cool, dark, counterpart to the other cosmological DnD spheres. Also, just a slight correction. The mercenaries that were sent after Firan/Azalin did not attack him, by infiltrating his castle. Firan/Azalin was lured out with the promise of newly discovered magic (from a double agent), accompanied by only a small retinue of guards, and then ambushed by said mercenaries. edit: Also, just another quick note. There was no ruler of Darkon before Azalin, because the land was literally formed for him, by the Dark Powers. When Azalin left Barovia, and entered the Mists, the Dark Powers "separated" Azalin into two individual entities. One was the powerful mortal wizard, Firan, with no memories of being the lich Azalin, who wondered the mists for an indeterminate amount of time. The other was the lich Azalin (who named itself Darcalus), with no memory of it's former mortal life as Firan, who entered into the new land of Darkon, and ruled from Castle Avernus. When Firan finally exited the Mists (only entering Darkon after years of Azalin's rule, according to the memories of its inhabitants), and eventually confronted Darcalus, the two separate beings would merge into the "true" complete Azalin, replete with all memories, again. The whole setup was another cruel game orchestrated by the Dark Powers, for their amusement.

    You forgot to mention that in order to come back from the time of unparalleled darkness, he now uses the body of his dead son as his physical form since his lich essence needed a corpse to inhabit, so the dark powers played a nasty trick on him and made that one the closest. His sons ghost haunts him more frequently now because of this.

    My D&D group just foiled a plan by Azalin. Azalin was able to escape by hijacking the body of a Vistani child, possessing it with his spirit. This violation of a seeming rule of Ravenloft, an actual escape caused turmoil within the land of Mist. The mists began to materialize on, over time, all other planes, searching for the escaped prisoner, and, in their haste, leaving people in planes not their home one. They eventually found out his plot, travelled to Darkon with assistance, broke the Soul Jar containing the infant's soil, and sent him back to Darkon to remain forever. Glad to find a video on him! Thank you!
