I bought The Great Escape JUST b/c I'd seen Dress to Kill so often that I just had to see what he was talking bout! And I was cracking up through the whole movie, with his anecdotes running through my head. haha I love this man.
Love this! My uncle was one of the 26 who did not get shot. Spent the entire war (first Canadian captured) in prison camps except for two days hiding in snow. Great take on the american view of the war..motorcycle riding to Switz. etc. vs the reality of cold and death for the 50.
One thing is for certain: I'll never gonna feel the same about that movie ever again. I've watched it countless times when I was a kid and it had a certain magic for me. Thanx, Eddie, for ruining a childhood pleasure for me.And then again, he's about 95% right. Especially since the whole motocycle chase thing was McQueen's idea of spicing up (early action Hollywood style) an otherwise actor's movie, almost theater-like. Izzard is clearly one of the best comedians when it comes to pop culture.
The Anerican general in the escape ended up at Fort Lewis, WA, and he was the most OUTRAGEOUS hilarious flirt. He never missed a WAC company tea party, (they were trying to keep army women feminine) and would give us rides in his staff car. When the guys in adjoining barracks kept calling in bomb threats to make us turn out in the dark, the general made ALL of the guys hit the street, too. He was a hoot.
@czechreck LMAO I love that a British comedian can even recognize that here in America, people in the South have a tendancy to name their kids things like Bobby Sue and Bobbi Jo and so on-- not all of them, naturally, it's a stereotype but still fricking hilarious.
Howdy good buddies. Self-absorbed American here. Never heard of Eddie Izzard till now. Now he's a right funny fellow, and clever as the day is long. It doesn't look like he prepares anything (except his wardrobe and makeup). Does he just do all this great comedy shootin' from the hip (oops, excuse my American - I mean, extemporaneously)? He seems to be sort of a Brittish Robin Williams.
Catch his joke about Goldfish and their 8 second memory.... "What if their bowl has a 9 second circumference? As they swim around they will be thinking 'Oh what a lovely view, hang on.... this bit looks familiar... oh what a lovely view', hang on.... ".
Well 50 escapees were executed by the Gestapo...and most of them were British...but it's true, only 3 Americans I think versus 70 British and a handful of people of other nationalities were involved.
I think I've seen this 30 times, but it's still hysterical! "... bits of tin can with a bit of jam ... clang." I love his geography! "... where the Nazi gold comes from." Brilliant. Just brilliant!
@adda141 No need to get all national-pride-defensive, he was talking about the time of the war...Eddie Izzard's more of an internationals than most/any other comedians!:)
I think a lot of people forget about the Canadians, Australian's, New Zealander's, the Gurka's who fought and died in world war 2. In films and in society in general, we tend to think only of the British and American's when it comes to WW2.
He's such an intelligent comedian with a surreal way of telling his monologues. Brilliant.

Just saying Hi 12 years later :)
....its incredible that they continue to put the great escape on tv EVERY Christmas holiday...

Terrific film! Starred a motorcycle, a tunnel. And some guys.
Nice little Monty Python reference there. Most people seemed to miss it.
Nooooobody expects the Monty Python reference!
3:00! Spanish Inquisition Joke?!?! Awesome!
I'm just getting over a bad cough that I've had for several days. I keep breaking into coughing fits from laughing so hard!
Eddie Izzard made a Monty Python reference...I can die happy now.
Instant like, because I know this will be hilarious.. And I wasn't wrong.
🤣
Eddie makes me glad I watched that movie. Haha!
I love how Eddie got away with devoting 7 minutes of his show to a run-through of a film from the 60s.
"Look, we are going too do the biggest excape in the history of people excaping from things they should'nt!"
no one expects the spanish tunnel king!!!!
@PickledCabages Actually... he made two Monty Python references. First the Spanish Inquisition... then the line he spoke in German. Eddie is great.
"No one expects the Spanish Tunnel King!"
Jimmi-sue, Bobby-will.... Fishy bob.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAA
@czechreck LMAO I love that a British comedian can even recognize that here in America, people in the South have a tendancy to name their kids things like Bobby Sue and Bobbi Jo and so on-- not all of them, naturally, it's a stereotype but still fricking hilarious.
Jesus, did you record the audio with a fucking toaster?!
I sure hope not, as the toaster was with me in the bathtub.
A toaster someone pissed in.

It's all the turny knob's fault.

It doesn't sound too good but it's nice.
'Passports,please?
They're a bit clangy and a bit jammy.'
Yes well I'm from the steel and jam area of Stuttgart.
I freakin lost it at 'fishy-bob'
Gotta love how about 2 people got the Monty Python reference.
Aww we love you guys!
That's great. I TRIED to watch Das Boot (b/c of his reference in Definite Article) but I just couldn't make it through it. Wayyyy long.

Well 50 escapees were executed by the Gestapo...and most of them were British...but it's true, only 3 Americans I think versus 70 British and a handful of people of other nationalities were involved.
love it
@Mad4john Monty Python: "Jawohl, mein Herr. So habe ich einige wenige Lacher bekommen". Yes sir, that's how I got some very few laughs.
I think I've seen this 30 times, but it's still hysterical! "... bits of tin can with a bit of jam ... clang." I love his geography! "... where the Nazi gold comes from." Brilliant. Just brilliant!

A number of the men were Canadian and unlike the movies were in their low twenties.
I think a lot of people forget about the Canadians, Australian's, New Zealander's, the Gurka's who fought and died in world war 2. In films and in society in general, we tend to think only of the British and American's when it comes to WW2.
