  • This video serves as a step by step how-to guide to building a professional style workbench for your woodshop or workshop. If you have any questions about the build, ask them in the comments section and I will answer them as soon as possible.
    I've had several people ask for a materials list, so here it is. This is for 1 - 7' x 37" workbench.
    3 - 4"x4"x8'
    7 - 2"x4"x8'
    6 - 2"x6"x8'
    and a box of 2 1/2" or 3" screws.
    I hope this list helps those of you planning to build this. I'd love to see your finished product, so send me pictures via DM on Instagram (WV_DIY). Let me know if you have any questions. Thanks for watching!

    I bought this for my friend for his birthday as we just moved into a new house and he finally has room for a workshop. The bench was very easy to set up th-cam.com/users/postUgkxyFZUPFEey-PuqsPMxqaykBhgA1LWxFHh They center support is a little difficult to snap in and out of place at first but at least then we know the bench is secure. It was a pleasant surprise when we saw it came with clamps. I apparently missed that in the description. My friend loves the versatility of the bench. Great starter bench for his workshop and easily transportable all over our property. I wish the bench was a little taller but the other features of the bench more than make up for that.

    I just completed building this bench today, took me 4 hours in total to build. Purchased all items at home depot, total cost was $120 usd. I chose to go 8' on mine, and 39" finished height, as that is the height of the deck on my table saw, Brilliant work Zack, you truly inspired me to build something GREAT today, which will last a lifetime. Solid build, HIGHLY recommended!

      That's awesome! I've had so many people comment or send pictures of their tables and tell me they built it, but noone ever told me how much they spent. I spent about $90 when I built it about 3 years ago. It's interesting to see how prices have changed. Thank you for the comments!

      I've been on the hunt for a work bench and have looked at ones that come in a box but this table looks so damn nice and more sturdier than the pre made ones. If I get home depot to cut the wood, ill just have to buy a bunch of clamps and screws.

    This is the absolutely best method I have seen to build a basic work bench. By building the short sides first and then attaching the long piece on top and bottom while the short sides are on edge, it makes it so easy to keep everything square. I see videos of people building the frame for the top and then laying it down on a flat surface and holding the legs up by hand and screwing in and hoping for the best....ugh....and hell, many of us don't even have a flat surface to lay stuff on. I would have never even thought to assemble it the way/order you did it and now that I see it, it's the way I'm going to go. Thank you so much!

    Built this workbench yesterday, with a couple of modifications. It came out amazing! Instead of using 6 2x6 boards on the top, I went with 5 so the bench would be a little more shallow in depth (we have a 2 car garage, and every inch counts). That means that instead of using 28 inch stringers that he mentions at 7:55, I used 22.5 inch ones, which allows for the same lip on the front. I did what others suggested and attached the middle support on the bottom frame from underneath, so the bottom shelf I installed would not have that brace sticking up in the middle. Following WV DIY Guy's instructions sure beats learning how to use SketchUp to figure out all the measurements, although learning SketchUp is on my bucket list of things to learn. Another advantage of following the instructions in this video are that no expensive equipment is needed like a jointer, planer, or table saw. I'm so happy with how this bench turned out - thanks WV DIY Guy!

    I made this in a couple hours this afternoon. I found this video very inspiring. Since watching this and deciding to build it, I first built a set of sawhorses. As for this build, I increased the height and depth enough to nest a rolling workbench under it eventually. (Next build) I omitted the front/lower brace for the same reason.
    Thank you for a very easy to follow video, that served as a great spot to start my woodworking, and a great base for future projects.

    • @WVDIYGUY
      @WVDIYGUY  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +LAUREN BEBEE that's great! You're welcome! My only concern would be that you may lose some rigidity without having the front brace. I'm sure you'd know if that was a problem tho. Good luck with your future projects! I'd love to see them!

    Over the last weekend, I used this video to build a workbench using your exact specs. It was my first ever woodworking project of this scale, so while my results aren't as polished as yours, it still came out marvelously! Thank you very much! The only changes I made were that I added some OSB board on the bottom to create a long shelf, I sanded everything (my wood from Home Depot was faaaaaar short of smooth!), and I'll be staining it. I might put a 1/4" layer of hardwood over top to protect it, and I might add a metal U bracket on the front, so that clamping doesn't damage the wood.

    Overall a very nice and sturdy workbench! Well done! Some thoughts: While it's nice and deep (I think you said something like 33") that makes it hard to reach across if you decide to hang something on the wall behind it and you're not over six feet tall. Also, on that bracket on the middle of the bottom you could turn it 90 degrees, lower it so that it's the same level as the other boards and that would give you a completely flat surface should you decide later on to put a piece of MDF or plywood on there to make a lower shelf.Your bench is good especially because it takes no expensive/complicated tools to build. All 90 degree cuts and simple measurements. Again, very well done! I'm sure it will give you many years of use.

    My friend, you just made my day. I'm going to make me a workbench and the one you made in this video is exactly what I had in mind. Brilliant to see that my vision of a workbench is made by someone! Just one question, the 21"piece that you placed in the middle (6:50), why didn't you place it underneat, but on top of the 2"4" ? Great video!

    • @WVDIYGUY

      It should have gone underneath. After I published the video I moved it and placed plywood on the bottom as a shelf. Good eye! You're exactly right! underneath!

    @weldonb5491 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    A couple of years back I designed and build my first bench, ironically almost the exact same bench in the video even most of the dimensions. The frame is eerily identical except I went ahead and used the lower braces to hold a light duty storage shelf and as for the top I just screwed and glued two 3/4" pieces of quality plywood together and then secured to the already level bench, and so far that thing has taken all I can throw at it, and I too used what Americans consider basic tools. I also like knowing If I ever move out of this house it's light enough to come with me. Good video!

    Thank you for sharing this video! A few weeks ago, we were burglarized and all my tools were stolen...since then I have replaced them, but NOW can build the work bench I had always wanted with the center for my sliding compound saw :) THANK YOU!!! Nice clean job!!! We laughed when we saw you pre-drill all the holes.... we do the same thing and always get so much trouble for it!!! Yet, we never spit boards and have nice countersunk surfaces! Keep up the good work!!

    Thanks for the video and the design. I just ordered the lumber and and a box of 2.5 and 3 inch screws. I got one extra 2 by 4 and 2 by 6 just in case one is not suitable. Delivered for 130.00 by good lumber company.
    I'm going with your plan but going to use the full 8 foot 2 by 6s for over hang to mount a shop vise, and will reenforce the underside with 2 by 8 or 12.
    Thanks again!!

      In the video I put a crossbar on top of the bottom braces. After the video was done I changed that and put it under the bottom braces. That way the bottom can be easily turned into a shelf with a sheet of plywood.

    • @deanhannon4624
      @deanhannon4624 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lynard Burt yes but even with it being on top can still cut the ply in half and place along the bottom.

    This design reminded me of my father's bench (thing was so tough it survived falling off a pickup truck) so I built it to the same specs last summer.
    I'm noticing the overhang on the top has curled up a little and that there are gaps in between the 2x6s on top now. Is this because wood has dried out more? Do you recommend a fix? I was thinking of bolting down a piece of hardwood ply on top but wasn't sure if I wanted to cover 2x6s. Overall, its an awesome sturdy as hell bench. Thanks for taking the time to show us!

    • @WVDIYGUY
      @WVDIYGUY  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, as the wood dries, it will shrink and create the gaps. If the curl in the over hang can't be screwed flat, you could flip that particular board over and it might help a little. Putting a plywood top on top of the 2x6 would make it even more sturdy and give you a flat surface, so that is a great option. Good luck!

    Thanks for this video, it helped me finally build a workbench! I did the top a bit different since I needed a smooth surface. I used 2x4s about every 9 inches vertically and flush with the frame of the top. Then laid a 1/4" piece of plywood, screwed it in to the frame avoiding the 4 vertical posts, then laid a piece of hardboard over that which can be glued on. The idea was to have the top removable so I can get it out of my basement when I move because this thing is heavy!

      I started this build without a workbench. No big deal. I'm just about ready to lay the top down but am short screws right now. The toughest part was just getting the 3 initial framing pieces made so I took the 4x4s and spread them apart on the ground, then took the 28 in 2x4s and put one across the top then put the 2nd one 5 inches from the bottom. If they lined up at the top and bottom it was ready to be screwed into place. I'm amazed at how great its looking so far

    I followed the directions and video and it looks wonderful. I am anything but 'handy' with building items but you made it very easy to follow along. Thank you very much for sharing. With retirement, I am learning things I probably should have learned before now. One thing that I am adding is another table that will be only for my Miter saw. Actually it will be a portable miter saw with wheels. If I do it correctly, I can utilize the Workbench with the portable miter saw. That being with the wheels and the miter saw, letting it equal to the height of the workbench. I should be able to use the sides of the work bench or put it on the end.
    Thanks
    Bob

    NIce bench...I have built several for my limited shop at the barn. The only difference is I used 2x6 for the top side frame and
    two 2x4 screwed together for each leg....I cut the front 2x4 5 1/2" shorter to place the 2x6 for a rabbet type support. This makes it same dimensions as the 4x4 post. I used 3/4 plywood for the top and while yours is stronger, the plywood is seamless and is as strong as I need. For those without the long clamps, this is simpler IMHO. I used one sheet of plywood for the top and bottom shelf and the width is thus 24 inches. Obviously this does not work if you want the bench depth more, but for my needs, 24" is good. A 12" compound sliding miter saw will just barely fit although some saws may need some custom front support. Enjoyed your well put together video!!

    Thanks for the AWESOME Video! Aside from a few adjustments (height, width, depth) I used your plans. I also added a bottom and middle shelf. End result is a SOLID Bench that will last for years! I'm not a carpenter by any means, I just wanted a DIY inexpensive bench for the occasional work in my garage. Had no material on-hand went to my local HD with my list and spent just under $100.00 (total). End result was a SOLID bench since built (2018) that suits my needs PERFECTLY along with the satisfaction that I did myself. This would be Co$tly if bought in a DIY KIT or Custom Made! This has been used more than anticipated. The wife was impressed with my newfound carpentry skills...

    Just built this over the weekend. The bottom running boards for the frame, 5 inches was a little too low for me so I put it at 7 inches from the bottom and I put a vice grip on the left front edge. I really like the bench. I couldn't find any 4x4s that were untreated at Lowe's so I used treated. The legs look a different color but I don't mind. Overall I love it and really pleased. Nice work man!
