The real lesson to be learned here is that dad is spending time with his kids and teaching them how to build stuff with their own hands. Good job dad!
Absolutely great...unfortunately I don't have a workshop with thousands of dollars in equipment like you have.
That's my issue with many of these woodworking TH-camrs. I feel like telling them, "Guys, 95% of your viewers don't have that stuff and have neither the money nor the space for it."
I'm a teacher. Your kids were just standing around. It looked like they wanted to help. Next time, get them more involved! Great video and bench!!!😊👍
I built a work bench similar to this 30 years ago. Had a bunch of junk 2x4 used lumber that I used. One suggestion would be to put 1/4" plywood on top of the 2x4 top. That way when it gets in bad shape just remove the top 1/4" and put a new piece on and you have a new top!!

I know someone already mentioned this but can't help but to comment on it as well. I really appreciate that your kids are able to get involved with what you were building and helping Dad. They obviously enjoy being with you and helping instead of playing video games. Hats off to you for including your kids and teaching them how to work with their hands and building things. We need a lot more of that!
I really enjoyed watching this video and seeing this sturdy workbench come together. Hell of a lot cheaper than anything you can buy from a manufacturer, probably stronger too! And it’s literally the exact size that you wanted. The perks of doing it yourself!!

pretty good see your family work together and help you. I have 2 kids (3 and 8 years old) and is impossible to work without them.

Not so easy without a professional wood shop.
You do the whole thing with a hand saw, chisels, and a hand plane as well, it will just take a lot longer.

@@RevereOverland definitely. I believe Wranglerstar built one like that a couple of years ago on his channel. It was around 18" deep and had angled braces supporting it from the wall
I just finished making your workbench & it looks great. I watched your video about 10-20 times, bought Planer, pipe clamps, Armor Auto Jig, etc. I'm very happy with the table & excited to get my garage wood shop up & running. I just need to attach the top to the legs (& I paused the video at 7:40 to see the Armor Auto Jig holes on the long end of the side stretchers). Thanks again for the video. VERY helpful. And fun project to do.

Great build, I loved that your kids watched on in total awe of their dad😊 As for the smart arses that are jealous of your workshop, if they can’t think of an alternative means of achieving the desired outcome they probably shouldn’t be left alone with tools. I have some tools but not a thicknesser, however, I know I can come up with an alternative method that will yield the desired result. A great project and one I will be considering for my secondary layout bench as it isn’t too expensive and will be fun to build.

For those of us not as well equipped, do you think it would work to:
1) use a hand planer AFTER gluing the surface together?
2) use tiedown straps to hold it together
@@shaweehillsworkshop4226 Actually, he does have a good point. I went into this video with great interest, wanting to know how to build such a sturdy workbench as cheaply as you said.
Then I saw the planer. "Oh.... well, guess I'll have to try something else since I don't have a planer."
Someone else mentioned using two pieces of 3/4" plywood. That's how I'd do it till I can invest in a planer :-)
@@toddz8579 100% right. If you have all that equipment and a dedicated shop, you dont need to watch a youtube video on how to build a bench. This was targeted towards your everyday DIY guy, going by the click bait title..
Maybe you could use a sander and sand down the table smooth instead but IDK.

Having these videos to look back on is one of the only things that keeps me posting videos on youtube.
Love that the kids were included in the video as well. Having said that, I think it would’ve been nice to let them help a little as they appeared DESPERATE to do 😂, I actually was feeling sorry for them when I watched!!! Lol.
But even more practically, I think allowing them to help would send a message to viewers that there are phases to this build that are easy enough for kids.

Nice bench! I'll have to keep this one in mind. Regarding the vice (note: this was on a steel bench) someone modified a trailer hitch and mounted the vice to the part of the hitch that would have the ball. This made the vice more versatile and gave him the ability to move it off the bench so it wasn't always in the way. Can't remember the name of the channel but the video had to do with garage organization.

This is a superb wood working book I`ve ever read, *TopFineWoodworking. Com* . Both novice and some skilled woodworker can gain a lot of general info using this reading material. I`ve been very amazed how frequently I use this to look up woods at places like to restore and salvage spots.?

What's the point of these silly comments? If you don't have a shop space and tools to do projects what do you even need the work bench for? You can build this with much less tools than he uses, it just won't be as nice.

Great video, how did you attach the top to the legs? Angle brackets, or pocket holes/screws?
This bench is perfect for my needs. I bought the wood and just started building it! Only thing I don't have is a dado stack for my cheapo table saw. I'm also going to add workbench casters so I can move it. Thanks for sharing this build!
Although the title says $100 and 4 hours to build, I could not match that cost and timing. The materials cost me $190 (NJ) and I have 14 hours of time so far. I had to glue the top in 3 sections to fit through my small planar, so that added xtra time. And, I'm a newbie woodworker so added time for my inexperience. It's coming out fantastic and the base is almost finished and I'm ready to glue up the 3-sections of the top! Regardless of time and cost, I'm enjoying the build and very happy with the bench so far!

Just made my first workbench. I did things slightly different than you did. I brad nailed the shelf to the bottom stretchers and had to make 4x4's since the local box store had only 2x4's. Limber right now is crazy priced... it was almost 6$ per 2x4 (8').
Work bench turned out great. Next is a miter saw table then a rolling tool cart/bench for my router.

There are ways to build this bench without all of these tools, even then it is still a basic bench. As long as you have a circular saw, drill and basic hand tools you can build this bench.

Thanks for the video! One suggestion not really wood related, and maybe you already do this, but saw your kid in there during the glue up, it's always a good idea to involve kids in things they could help to engage their learning, and as further bonding experience. You probably already do this, but if not, think about it next time and let your kid help apply glue or hold things. I had this experience with my dad, and it helped me learn a lot, now I do a lot more diy than he does :)
JC E for sure, my kids are heavily involved and are in a lot of my videos helping. But sometimes that footage doesn’t make it into the video. They actually helped on this project but lots of times the footage is unusable because they are blocking the camera or it’s out of focus because I’m paying more attention to showing them as opposed to watching the camera. I'm only 19 years old, but seeing your kids being interested in your work is something I don't see a lot of these days and something I'd sure appreciate out of my children in the future. Makes me feel like my 10 y.o. brother needs to get off Fortnite once in a while and learn something!!
If your bro gets really good at games there are pro competitions with big cash prizes. Top gamers do OK for themselves. There probably are not that many spots for doing that sort of thing though.

Nice Job , Most of us do not have a planer or jointer I have Made similar with 2x6 for table top and 2x4 legs , without the glue 2x6 lay flat not on edge my legs are made up of 2x4 One 36 inch and 2 at 16-1/4 so the bottom shelf can rest on the 2x4 stringer 3 inch x 3-1/2 legs no cutting a slot in a 4x4 The two front legs, screw the first 16-1/4 to the 36 inch add the 8 foot stinger , screw the next 16-1/4 over the stringer , Same for the Back legs , On the inside top of the legs , under the table top flush I add a stinger to fasten the top to . I also use cross members every 16 inch between the stingers . all done with a skill saw and drill . I do more Auto repair so a clean finish is not important I know it will get deep scratch and dents . Thanks for the video im always looking at new idea for improvements

I completely understand, I have had those days. I will say that things like this have got much easier for me as years go by. A big part of it has just been having a bigger workshop set up well.
