Hi everyone! Just a friendly reminder, using his notch method, DONT WEAR GLOVES AROUND POWER TOOLS! Lol!
First, I want to say this is an AWESOME build and one I was excited to start! I went out, got the supplies, unloaded the wood, and got right to work. I unfortunately forgot one very important thing, which was to take off my gloves! The first board I cut into on my table saw rolled forward, flung itself behind me, rolled my gripper, and the saw blade grabbed my glove and almost amputated my pinky and ring finger.
I ended up with about 20 to 30 stitches. That being said, it took me about a month longer to build the work bench, but it still came out awesome!
Now that I am done, I am going to make a sign for my ripped up glove. Any ideas? I was thinking something along the lines of "no gloves, no nubs." Im open to better suggestions. Lol
A huge thank you to the gentleman who took the time to make this video!

I built this in about 5 hours (and I am extremely meticulous and slow). I bought all the materials at Home Depot for $180. I also made a wood purchase mistake though. Instead of 2x8's for the top, I accidentally bought 2x6's. This was rectified by buying an additional 2x8 and so on the top I have 4 2x6's and 1 2x8 (on the front edge). This gets about 3 3/4 inches overlap on the front edge with a perfectly even backside! Perfect! Thanks for this video!

I used this vid to build a workbench. The only thing I changed was the dimensions and the bench surface. I made my bench 6 feet long and 32” wide, and used 3/4” sanded plywood for the top. I’m applying polyurethane to the sanded plywood. I’m on coat #6 now and it’s building up to a wonderfully smooth, wipeable surface. Otherwise, I built it exactly to this plan. I’m very happy with how it turned out. If you follow this method and use these materials you’re building a bench that will outlast this century, and someone, 100 years from now, will cherish the workbench YOU built. Thank you very much for making this video.

I built a workbench very similar to that in 1982, and I still have it. The main difference is instead of lag-bolts into the legs (4x4 red wood), I used bolts and nuts so the top layer and middle layer could be removed for easy transportation if needed. I used heavy duty plywood instead of wood strips for the top and middle shelf. I later installed 4 metal drawers by cutting out space in the front facia board just below the top.

It’s super sturdy and feels like it could support the weight of my truck! Took me maybe 12 hours total and if I were to do it again I could probably do it in 6. I like the idea of using lag bolts to hold the frame together and leave the bottom shelf boards free floating, means if I need to move the bench (as in a new home) I can just disassemble the whole thing into the two frames, and I would only have to unscrew the top boards, unless you went an extra step to flush fit them on top like you did the bottom boards. Would make moving it a smaller more compact job in a trailer.

To me, the best way is what you can afford to do and however suits you. My first workbench I made with used lumber and I made it 48" high because I'm 6'8" and I hate bending down all the time, lol. The top was made of 2x6's and the legs, framework and bracing were all 2x4's, some with notches out of them where wiring had originally run through them when they had been part of an old house. I still have it and still use it though I have built heavier duty ones since as time and money permitted. It was built with a corded skilsaw and a 40 year old corded black & Decker drill with worn out motor brushes, but it still managed to drive in the deck screws I used to assemble it with.

Thanks for posting this! I just finished mine - using just a circular saw, cordless drill, and a ratchet. I’ve got arms like Popeye after driving all those lag screws by hand ; ) but the bench is solid as a rock. Turned out great!

Built it last week. Notching it out was a pain in the ass! Plus for some reason lowes had 4in lag screws where the 5in ones should have been. So i screwed 4 in already before realizing. Stupid of me to trust lowes labels. Thanks for the design. Bench is sturdy!

Watched so many workbench videos and decided to go with this since it has the 4x4 legs. Debating using plywood over the deckboards for the bottom shelf. Total cost Sept 2021 in Philly area is ~$240 as is. Thanks for the great build

Thanks for this awesome video, my buddy and I got all but the tabletop done in one night! Your video was super helpful and now I have a super sturdy workbench. We decided to sink our lags into the 2x4's to get some extra length into the 4x4's (plus I like how it looks). Keep up the great work!

I have been wondering what I should coat the workbench I'm going to build with and I think this is a great idea. Did it darken the wood a lot? Any particular brand or way on putting it on you found easiest? Thanks

@@texasbtc I used Solvable brand boiled linseed oil. Very minor coloration. Brushed on, rag to remove excess. Has a catalyst to speed up drying. Looks and works great.

Nice. Did it! Outstanding video! I modded by make it 4 ft, used all construction screws not lag scews, and the 2x4s. Also note the 4x4s like all dimensional lumber today, are really 3 1/2". I only could fine PT wood in a good length for the 4x4s.

Thanks very much for the great design. As stated, it was easy to build and completed in one day. The joints make for a rock solid, sturdy bench. The only modification I made was to replace the 2 x 8s for the bench top with 1 1/2" MDF. It made for a smoother, more level surface. Thanks again!

I just built your model over about 3 days and love it! I neglected to put the deck board stringers on before I assembled it (got excited and ahead of myself), so had to make my 68-yr old knees suffer while I crawled around awkwardly getting them fitted. I expect that I will add drawers to hold some stuff, but that's for later. Thanks for the great project!

Great for novices to create an incredibly useful bench - only a couple of missing points: use cinch straps to hold the cross pieces while tacking them in; need to take the safety guards off the table saw to make the notches in the 4X4s (and I notched the lower shelf planks as well); using construction lumber makes a much less attractive but just as sturdy bench. two favorite aspects: the sturdiness, the fact that it comes completely apart so you can move it anywhere (my current house is on a ledge with about a million stairs to get up to the house, anything coming in or out has to be dissassembly-able!)

The legs out of 2X4, and leave spaces for the stringers, instead of cutting “notches”, aka Mortices, in the leg. The 10-ft @x4s, that were too short were probably “stud” length, which is 3-inches short to accommodate the top and bottom plates of the wall.

Great stuff! Made this last weekend and followed right along. Ended up using a circular saw to notch out the 4x4's. I also had to use 2 ratchet straps from my pickup to hold the supports in place while putting in the lag bolts. Still pretty easy to do. Thank you so much!

Hey guy... I want to learn basic woodworking so I recently purchased an Amish shed to use as a woodworking workshop. I've been going through the process of purchasing the necessary tools and I'm starting to teach myself a few woodworking skills. Anyway, I knew I needed a workbench to get started and proceeded to look at the purchase options available. After considering the cost to purchase, I decided to try and build one myself. I found your video and proceeded to follow it and build the bench. Your instructions were clear and concise and the video was a great help. The final product is attractive, sturdy and useful. Thanks much for sharing your bench plans on the internet! I built it last week and have been using it ever since.
