  • Kitty Hawk’s final day at sea, 31 May 2022. Filmed from South Padre Island, Tx as she is being towed to her final resting place in Brownsville, Tx. Got some great drone footage and was even able to land on the flight deck. Thanks to Luis C for the flashback to flight ops shots.

I had the honor of serving onboard this beast 2007 and 2008 (prep for Decommission). Sailed her from Yokosuka, Japan to Bremerton Washington. Combat Systems Dept. Radio room. It was sad to see her go. I worked with a very good crew that will have life long memories. Life on this ship was a challenge, but one that was well worth it in the end. Sayounara. Kitty Hawk. May your memories live forever!!!!

My dad’s pride and joy during his 30 years of Navy service from WWII, Korea and Viet Nam. I just conditioned his VF 213 Black Lions bomber jacket. He cherished it until he passed at 94 years of age. This carrier and those on board served our country well and deserve a peaceful rest.

My cousin's last flight was from the deck of this ship. 22 March 1972. About 70 miles over Cambodia his Cosair A7 developed a sudden violent vibration in the engine and he punched out. Despite his wingman's locking his coordinates into his in flight computer, no trace of Dennis or his A7 were ever found. His A7 was the third one to develop this problem. All A7s were grounded following his incident pending investigation, which revealed that a ceramic bearing in the LTV fan jet engine was responsible when it shattered and failed. (RIP 🙏🏼 Lt. Dennis S. Pike)

OMG that is so sad! I’m really sorry for you and your family. What a horrible nightmare you and your family went through and all the worry and distress knowing he was out there waiting. Pure trauma for his wife and kids. I cant even begin to think of everything your cousin went through. All over a bearing, my God. Why did he have to be the flight that caused the grounding when the second flight should have grounded the A7s. Why did it take your cousin losing his life? Im looking at footage of Kitty Hawk and imagining his last flight taking off but not coming back. I imagine it is hard to watch his old ship be dismantled knowing he walked all over that flight deck and halls. God Bless you.

I did 2 commands, 98-2002 (Plane Captain), 2007-2008. Was there when we left Japan for decommission and I was at the bottom of the S in "Sayonara" that was spelt out above deck during our departure from Yoko, Japan heading towards San Diego. Even have the aerial photo. Memories that will last a lifetime. I remember standing at the bow every week during a slow night after Flight Ops and watching the ocean glimmer with the moon light. Thinking to myself, how lucky I am to be here in the moment and having this once in a lifetime experience. Was even on deck when we still had the F14 Tomcats... what a site to behold (especially at night).

I was CR/ Comms in the very early 90s starboard bow catwalk just in front of AM wisker 2 was my stare at the sea and contemplate position on the Hawk. She was a great ship and it's a damn shame what's happening to her really wish she was becoming a museum instead. But your right there is nothing like seeing a Tomcat on deck whether it is parked wings folded back with a setting south China sea sun directly behind it or crouched on cat one shredding the air at full A/B shaking just waiting to be released and leap into the air. Or a pair of them roaring by the ship wings back just as gracefully as you please making speed and power look easy. Port calls in Subic Bay, Hong Kong, Yokosuka, Sasebo, Pusan, and many others even sitting for over a decade she still looks better than most of the Nimitz's My oldest is on the Nimitz I went to visit him about 8 Months ago what a shit show I was allowed aboard the Hawk her P ways are still polished the murals still clear the interior paint was still good all she need was an exterior paint job and her equipment and she would have been 5x5 the Nimitz on the other hand looked like a floating scrap yard rust inside and out and not just a little we are talking soft deck plates that were cordoned off none of here reefers working they had to take the hawks ovens cause they didn't work either not a one of them. All 4 cats trashed even the arresting engines looked like crap what an embarrassment the Kitty Hawks Crew knew it was most likely the end for her and the left her in good order clean heads fresh wax and paint Nimitz is a working fleet carrier and is a junk pile in a way that would never have been excepable in the Navy prior to 2015 going all the way backto pre WWI

I was a plane captain on her sister ship (CV64) in the 1980s, and I loved going forward on the flight deck. I worked the night shift, and I would sometimes go up early in the morning hours and lean into the wind. No one around. It was a powerful feeling, that also made me feel very very small. Good, but small.

They are remarkable ships. My father tried so hard to join the Army in 1941 but was 4F. He ended up working in the Brooklyn Navy yard as a ship fitter until its close. Although he never served he was always proud of fact that he helped build the Saratoga, the Constellation & the Independence all Aircraft Carriers built at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. I remember one day on visit ship aboard one of these carriers I got lost because I went a couple of decks down on one of those huge lifts all by myself. I think I was 5 or 6 years old at the most. I was really scared because the ship was the biggest thing I was ever on & alone. It took about two hours before my parents reunited with me. I had two older brothers who never served, but I served on a WW2 SUB from 70 to 72. It was the most remarkable experience of my life. Life changing actually. I still till today draw on some of the knowledge I acquired in the Navy. Sorry to say the camaraderie I experienced on my SUB was never duplicated any where else in my life.

Those years I was in awe every time I stepped on board and was never more proud to be in the Navy while I served on her. She took me to Hawaii where I eventually fell in love with an Australian gal. Great memories when video recording and CD, s were new. We had a fax in port and no internet and took pride in our safety. Played basketball for the Kitty and you could find the court on the hanger deck at almost at any time. Great diversity in the crew with an abundance new and old traditions coming and going. My dad was a plank owner on the Kitty, and served 11 years on her altogether. He was aboard during the boiler room fire in '73 that killed 6 sailors. He was also burned. He died 14 years later from mesothelioma, and always believed he was exposed to asbestos in the boiler room during that fire. But who knows. Still, that ship was his pride and joy, and he loved telling anyone who would listen. Sad to see her get scrapped. I was hoping she could be used as a museum or even an artificial reef, like the Oriskany, but I guess thats what happens to most ships.

You'd love to get a tour of the engine rooms. That's where the shit really starts out. Makin steam. 1200psi super heated steam. 1100 degrees. 800psi is what gets those birds airborne. I ran the #4 screw. That was such a great job. Lots of responsibility and prestige. We will never see anything like it again. Kitty Hawk was it. Last one of her kind.

Such a famn shame. So much money was organized for this to become a museum ship. They should have sold/donated the USS Kitty Hawk *or* the USS John F. Kennedy to a worthy organization. MILLIONS was raised. I just don't understand. Both of them are going to be future Gillette razor blades. Personally, I feel the Kitty Hawk has such a rich history.. more so than the Kennedy. Would have made a PERFECT museum ship. I guess we should just be thankful we have the USS Midway in California.

My home 1996-1998 - did the WestPac and left just before she went to Japan. My ONLY tour as "ship's company" rather than as a squadron aircrewman - good memories, bypassed Hawaii, on to Hong Kong, Singapore, Bahrain, several stops in the UAE, Perth, Hobart, Hawaii and Home to San Diego... first cruise with females aboard

I have a lot of US servicemen when i was working as waiter. I've been luckily walked around and had escorted by my friend inside US ships like USS constellation, USS enterprise, USS grayback and other destroyer and escort ships. It's a great experienced. I wish that time to become one of the US navy in any of those ships but unluckily did'nt pass the exam.
