Outstanding shipmates. Press on. USS Kitty Hawk CV-63 Jan 1980 to July 1983. I was standing over there with the other vets who served on her.

My Dad served on kitty during late 60's. Dean Ebbeson, ordinanceman (red shirts). His heart is still with her. Thank you to all who served on her!

My late step dad was a second class petty officer in V1 division crash and rescue his name was Gary Kirkland. Spent a couple of dependent cruises and many duty days on board her with him. There was a little shack right behind the crane at the very bottom corner of the island. Fair winds and following seas old girl you are beautiful lady then and your beautiful lady now.

As a USCS engineering technician, I worked modernization engineering on USS Kitty Hawk for the last several years that she was forward-deployed at SRF-JRMC Yokosuka. Many fond memories of working with her crew and improving her systems.
I hate to see this happen to her, but as one who had crawled over a substantial part of this vessel, she was a tired lady when they called her home. There's only so much money, and it must be split between repair, maintenance, and modernization, so none of those gets top-notch attention. And ships just wear out over time.

      What is USCS?

@@powerfulstrong5673 "United States Civil Service." It's not as commonly used here in the US, but it was quite useful when I was working with the Japanese nationals during my tours there. Either way, it differentiates actual USN employees (like I was), who have cognizance over engineering decisions, from contractors, who don't.

I was stationed aboard the Kitty Hawk from '71 to '73, #4MMR (4 main machinery room) and ran the #4 screw. Those are the screws on the aft flight deck, (Propellers) which are 5 blade, 21ft in diameter and made of manganese bronze.

Watched my old ship the Saratoga take the same journey a few years ago. I know it's not viable but wish we could keep all of them.

The Kitty Hawk would have made a good European based carrier for NATO operations with a multinational NATO crew and air wing (similar to the NATO E-3s)
It would have been interesting to see her fixed up and upgraded and operating in European waters with 17+ countries contributing to her Naval operations in terms of crew and escorts with F/A-18s, F-35s, the proposed Naval Gripens, and Rafales operating from her flight deck…

The US has the understanding that an aircraft carrier is vital to US Freedom and has created several generations of GLOBAL IMPACT PLATFORMS that the world DOES RESPECT !!

Spent many an hour on those aft sponsons and fantail smokin' cigs or just watching the waves roll by.
    RIP old girl.
